BREAKING: California has just become the first state to approve the creation of a tax force focused on figuring out how to pay reparations for slavery, including details on what form of compensation should be awarded as well as its recipients.
California Governor Gavin Newsom Signs Bill Opening Door To Paying Slavery Reparations

Terrible timing
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 1, 2020 12:10 AM |
This is why Trump will win again in November.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 1, 2020 12:16 AM |
This is truly scary.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 1, 2020 12:16 AM |
About fucking time. And has nothing to do with trump losing.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 1, 2020 12:17 AM |
I'm all for the Silicon Valley zillionaires paying the reparations bill themselves but we all know that won't happen.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 1, 2020 12:18 AM |
JFC, timing please.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 1, 2020 12:20 AM |
I hate Newsom almost as much as I hate Trump, and for exactly the same reason: I do NOT like extremist politicians of any political persuasion. I can't wait until the Orange Turd is gone, so I can devote my energy to getting Newsom out of office.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 1, 2020 12:21 AM |
I didn't even realize California was a southern slave state. Everyone better update their maps (and history books).
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 1, 2020 12:27 AM |
R8, that map states just the opposite.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 1, 2020 12:30 AM |
He must be running for the Democratic nomination in 2024.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 1, 2020 12:33 AM |
It was sarcasm, R9.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 1, 2020 12:35 AM |
Really? And where, exactly, are the reparations for the Native Americans that we stole the country from, introduced disease-causing booze and illness to?
Fuck Gavin Newsome. Fuck snowflakes that chase trends.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 1, 2020 12:38 AM |
California had slavery? When?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 1, 2020 1:06 AM |
Will Kamala be subject to a reparations tax, as she is a direct descendant of slave owners and traffickers?

This dude is a few sandwiches short of a picnic. He's lucky he has good hair.

This is one of the most unworkable, nuttiest ideas in the world.

when it became part of the U.S. government. Do keep up.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 1, 2020 4:45 AM |
Between this and the tranny pandering my opinion of Newsom is going down. With everything going on in the country, he chooses to focus on reparations for slave descendants (whatever the EFF that entails) and making sure trannies can scam the law and decide which prison they want to go to. Good god.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 1, 2020 4:46 AM |
California never had slavery! The gold from the California gold rush actually financed the Union Army, and free black miners dug it up along with everyone else! No Jim Crow either, the worst racially biased laws in the state's history were actually enacted against th HD Chinese, not black people.
This is idiotic, Newsome is just pandering to the idiot far left.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 1, 2020 6:44 AM |
R22 Exactly. Stunts everywhere these days. Keep your eyes on the finish line people.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 1, 2020 6:52 AM |
If there are federal reparations, does that mean black Californians get to double-dip?
Enacting reparations on the state level is completely moronic given that most U.S. states were never slaveholding, and many descendants of slaves don't even live in Deep South states. A lot of consultants are about to make bank off that "task force" though.
R21
California was also a big player in interning the Japanese.

will reparations be distributed on EBT cards?

R4 - Are you living on Jupiter? Huge swaths of the state are on fire, with billions in homes and savings burning up before the residents' eyes - COVID has deprived the state of billions, just as in New York City, in revenue from the residential and commercial taxes, and from the entertainment and hospitality industry - and he picks now to talk about a forced tax on residents to pay for reparations for something that the huge Latino and Asian population had nothing to do with?
Not to mention the fact that it was the Spanish who enslaved the Native populations to a far greater extent? Where are they in this "reparations" bill? Where are the Chinese labourers who built the railroads?
Where does all the money come from in the next three years? Let me guess: taxes on the rich?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 1, 2020 2:05 PM |
California’s black population is only 6.5%, yet 40% Latino and 15% Asian.
Way to piss off Latino and Asian voters, Gav.

I'm with you, R20. I live in California and started questioning his leadership during COVID. I know many here will disagree with me but I the restrictions were excessive for too long. Anyway, after the T issue and now this, I can't vote for him again.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 1, 2020 3:15 PM |
R26, I suspect the Task Force is going to get paid for a while, and then announce that sorry, there's no money for reparations right now because of the fires and pandemic but we tried, right?
That's how you pander, for low cost.

[QUOTE] With everything going on in the country, he chooses to focus on reparations for slave descendants (whatever the EFF that entails) and making sure trannies can scam the law and decide which prison they want to go to.
I always hated this canard. The man signs hundreds of bills that you completely ignore and because these two headlines were able to grab your feeble-minded attention, suddenly it’s all he’s focused on.
I think your outrage is more reflective of YOUR obsession with these topics rather than Gavin Newsom’s.
Here’s another bill he just signed helping California small businesses, but nobody bothered to make a thread about it because it would get two posts and sink like a stone without the steady bumps from obsessives like you.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 1, 2020 6:18 PM |
Newsom's approval rating is among the highest of any governor the state has had in the past 50 years during the same point in their term.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 1, 2020 6:27 PM |
R50 - Only because of COVID. You could say the same about Andrew Cuomo, who was losing lots of support in NY until he became a hero through response to COVID.
One day, the vaccine will be here, things will quiet down in some corners, and the voters will change their minds.
Remember, the Brits threw Chuchill out in 1945 after he kept the country together and got it through WWII.
Time and tide and practical considerations rule in the end.
The timing of this may have looked good to him because his ratings are high due to COVID.
But it's a double-edged sword as people begin to wonder if the state is worth living in - you add this in, and it could have quite the opposite impact.
Especially amongst Asians and Latinos.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 1, 2020 7:14 PM |
Who is going to pay this tax? It better not be the citizens because if so, then FUCK YOU, Gavin. Make the corporate predator class pay the tax.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 1, 2020 7:17 PM |
R30 - absolutely agree with you. He makes me miss Gov. Jerry Brown because apparently Gavin learned nothing.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 1, 2020 9:28 PM |
Geez, there's a lot of stupid people on here. The U.S. took lives and labor from blacks over centuries and it's payback time. It will happen, so get used to it.
Will it be easy to figure it all out or will it make everyone happy? Probably not. It's a shame those greedy white folk who were profiting from this mess at the time had the foresight to see what a mess would be left to their progeny. Oh, well. I guess that's not very superior thinking, is it? We all agree it's a mess and the blame falls squarely on the government who allow the slaughter and oppression to take place. End of story.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 1, 2020 11:50 PM |
*** DIDN'T have the foresight to see the mess...

I have no idea what's up with Newsome and the legislation the past 10 days - these are all items that could wait until after the election.
Not that California has any real chance of going red - but it just feeds the right-wing fear machine.

by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 2, 2020 3:33 AM |
Asian population in California is double that of Blacks. Should people of Asian descent pay for reparations seeing as they weren’t part of the slave-owning class in the US back in the 1800s? In California you could make more of a case, if you’re going down this rabbit hole, in reparations to descendants of Chinese laborers who built the railroads in the West. They were treated horribly and treated little better than disposable slaves, as cheap labor.
Cannot compare this to the pittance in reparations that Japanese Americans who were alive to receive them. Most of the interned American citizens had died when that happened. After the war in California there were still rampant discrimination in housing against Asian-Americans because of them being viewed as less American.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 2, 2020 4:38 AM |
Nobody gets paid for horrors that happened to their ancestors. It's hard enough to get paid for horrors that happen to yourself!
Slavery has been over 150+ years, even the Jim Crow laws ended over 50 years ago. And there's the sensible place for reparations BTW, people who were deprived of education or employment when they were young because of unjust racially biased state laws. They're the ones who deserve compensation, not every human with African ancestry.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 2, 2020 6:03 AM |
If a person is half black and half white, do they have ho pay themselves reparations?
Seriously, the idea of reparations is totally unworkable in a multi-racial society. Who pays and who receives? Do people of Asian ancestry whose families never had anything go do with slavery have to pay? Do recent African immigrants get paid even though nobody in their family was ever a slave? Do the rest of us have to chip into Will Smith's reparation payment, even though he's richer than the whole white population of my town put together?
No, the slaves are all dead, the slave owners are all dead, and the wealth generated by chattel slavery vanished in the collapse of the Confederate dollar, generations ago.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 2, 2020 6:09 AM |
What about us?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 2, 2020 7:25 AM |
My ancestors were in Europe til well into the 20th century. Maybe all of Europe should contribute to this.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 2, 2020 7:34 AM |
As has been explained every time one of these threads come around, reparations is mainly to interrupt the cycle of systemic poverty that affects every black person in this country (whether they’re descended from slaves or not) due to racism that stems directly and uninterrupted from slavery. If you live here and you’re black you are economically negatively affected by the legacy of slavery because of racism. What is so difficult to understand.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 2, 2020 8:40 AM |
I know, right, R50?!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 2, 2020 9:45 AM |
Yes, R50, and being female means you're going to earn less than your male cohorts, and be at greater risk for violence. Surely that deserves reparations, too?
Not to mention all the shit that comes with being GAY...
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 2, 2020 9:53 AM |
This is just a study not an actual reparation. Relax white gays nobody gonna take your caftan ( or klan robes ) anytime soon.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 2, 2020 11:44 AM |
R52 maybe it does. But that’s not the subject under discussion. Must everything the black community lobbies for or protests for be shut down because some other group haven’t protested for the same thing, but maybe also deserve a similar improvement in their lives.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 2, 2020 5:38 PM |
Idiotic, of course. I don't know anyone who owns slaves, or has been one.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 2, 2020 6:09 PM |
[quote] Nobody gets paid for horrors that happened to their ancestors.
Ahem.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 2, 2020 6:12 PM |
Also if we’re talking about inheritance as a concept, of course white people will kick up a huge fuss about inheritance taxes and will fight tooth and nail to maintain strong inheritance systems, and then will deny black people inheritance to reparations due to their ancestors.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 2, 2020 6:22 PM |
So, Chinese Americans should get reparations too because their ancestors' labor was exploited and they faced awful discrimination and even massacres.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 2, 2020 6:29 PM |
R59 I’m not so familiar with it but was there a major human rights violation event when you say ‘labor was exploited’? And are their descendants currently economically disenfranchised due to this event?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 2, 2020 6:52 PM |
Asians and Latinxs shouldn't have to pay. This is white people shit.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 2, 2020 7:36 PM |
R60 Are you fucking serious? You never heard or read about Chinese railroad workers who fucking built the railroads? Without their labor which was dangerous and yes, exploited, the economic and territorial expansion wouldn’t have happened. After all of that, Congress repaid Chinese immigrants by passing Chinese Exclusion Act. Rampant racism against Asians led to all Asians seen as foreign even though they were Americans. It led to so-called enlightenment Democratic administration and Supreme Court to justify mass internment of Japanese-Americans in WW2.
My old neighbors, an elderly Japanese-American couple who had been teenagers in WW2 and living in Sacramento with their respective families, were still so ashamed of being interned that they rarely talked about it. Before internment, their families had their own farms, purchased through white intermediaries/ friends because people wouldn’t sell them properties due to them being Asian. But the families eventually won their communities over because they adopted American culture readily.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 2, 2020 7:47 PM |
Another article on the Chinese railway workers which made up 90% of the workers building the railroads. Their descendants want history to acknowledge this contribution. In California there were instances of violence directed against Chinese immigrants, look up Chinese Massacre of 1871.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | October 2, 2020 7:53 PM |
R62 I’m not from the US I haven’t studied US history so no I know very little about the building of the US railroads and the exploitation of Chinese labour for such. You seem to know a lot about it why not start a movement for reparations? I’m not sure what your comment about your Japanese neighbours has to do with anything. Are we just listing atrocities now?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 2, 2020 8:10 PM |
Let me tell you something. We were slaves in Egypt for four hundred years and you know what? We fucking got over it.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | October 2, 2020 8:24 PM |
R64 Wow, you are dense. Mentioning my American neighbors of Japanese descent was to illustrate the point of anti-Asian discrimination and violence in California’s history. You know, now that California is thinking about reparations for Black people. The point is if the state wants to go down this rabbit hole then maybe it should study its own history, as Chinese and Japanese immigrants have been at the receiving end of discrimination and violence. The state now studying the logistics of reparations for slavery is another example of wanting to out-woke everybody.
As foe your “are we listing atrocities now?” comment, you asked for examples and I provided you with one. Sorry if it doesn’t fit into your narrative of only Blacks as victims of racism in the US.
No one who is sane wants to start a reparations movement for descendants of Chinese laborers here. All the descendants want is for history to be properly taught and acknowledged.

That happened in 1877. I don't think any of those horrible white people are still around today.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 2, 2020 8:41 PM |
How is CA going to pay for this? We don't even have the extra $100 to chip in to the LWA for people who have lost their jobs and small businesses due to the pandemic. It seems like very odd timing on the Governors part but then I guess nothing should be all that surprising.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | October 2, 2020 8:46 PM |
When will blacks apologize for slavery as 48% of free blacks owned slaves vs. 1% of free whites? When will blacks apologize for creating the slave trade thousands of years before whites did? When will blacks apologize for the enslaving of whites for thousands of years(if you know your history you would know about how Carthage was at war with Rome(Carthage was in what is now modern day Tunisia (North Africa) frequently due to them raiding and enslaving white Europeans. We get the word slave from Slav (Slavic) because the Slavs (white people) were enslaved so often there very name became synonymous with forced servitude, frequently from Persians as well as occasionally Asians (Mongols and Huns).
If you're saying that I am benefiting from this system I'd like to know how. I get told that I am racist because of my skin color(because people don't understand irony), is that my privilege? Is it my privilege to be accused of being racist despite the fact that blacks are 150% more likely to commit a hate crime then whites? Is it my privilege as a white person to be substantially more likely to be a victim of interracial violence compared to blacks(who commit 80% of all interracial violence)? Is it my privilege that if I am to be shot by a police officer it will be largerly ignored while a black person shot, regardless of whether or not the shooting was warranted (as the majority of the time it is), will get seven times the news coverage?
The only privilege I see is that whites are accountable for their actions and the actions of dead people and the actions of non white people and nonwhites are not accountable for anything ever. Hate to be the barer of bad news, but thats racism. Instead of claiming that our system is racist despite the fact that the US was the first nation in the world to start dismantling slavery (Mauritania, African nation) was the last (ended it officially in 1981. Vermont ended it in 1777, England wouldn't end it until 1840, China until 1930 etc.).
So blacks had slaves, whites had slaves but for less time, blacks continued slavery long after whites ended it, whites ended it first and encouraged nonwhites to end slavery and so the conclusion is that . . . white people as a whole are assholes and need to be punished for it? Seems a little racist and also stupid. Are you going to give up your privilege? I mean your demanding every one else live their life in perpetual shame, perpetual apology for crimes others committed, all because of the color of their skin, so are you going to give up what you have? Are you going to give up your high paying job to give it to a black person? Your nice house? Your car? Or is it just every one else that has to give up everything they have because racist people demand it?

Even their female counterparts couldn't vote and still get less pay. Ugh. I really need to do a deep dive into LGBT history over the last century to see just exactly what we endured through this time. Hell, black people don't even care about equal rights for gays.

Why doesn't Newsom just go the full hog and let Mexico take California back?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | October 2, 2020 9:40 PM |
R66 I actually don’t think I asked for examples sorry. But appreciate the history lesson even if it was a tad aggressive lol.
What it comes down to is that there is an historical precedence for these kinds of payments (see post-holocaust). Also there is a direct connection between current economic disenfranchisement of Black people in US stemming from the enslavement (repeat that in your head; enslavement) of their ancestors which is borne through history via racism.
And for every economic damage that is done to black citizens there’s an (wait for it) opposite economic benefit to the white citizens (that’s you yes you) so you (white Americans) could read it this way; you have more money in your bank account because of your whiteness, and it is there because it is balanced on the opposite side by money missing from your fellow citizens’ accounts because of their blackness.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 2, 2020 10:26 PM |
There are plenty of successful blacks these days. There are lots of poor whites. The argument doesn't make any sense.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 3, 2020 12:14 AM |
R77, you seem to think the US is made up entirely of white/guilty people, and black/wronged people. This is not true.
Both Califormia and the US are made up of all races and nationalities of people, many of whom are neither white nor black, many more are either recent immigrants whose families came to the US long after slavery had ended, many more are mixed race. I would say the majority of Americans dont fit into either side of your white/ guilty vs. black/innocent paradigm, as with most attempts to fit everyone into one if two given categories. Literally and figuratively, the world isnt black and white, it's all shades if gray, or all colors.
It really worries me that so many black people have this idea that reparations are the solution to their problems, because it's not an idea that can actually work in the real world. The sooner this reparations foolishness is dropped, the sooner real solutions can be found.

R80
I get the feeling this is as much a white SJW thing.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | October 3, 2020 12:43 AM |
R80 I didn’t say that you’re putting words in my mouth. There’s no denying the wage disparity between white and Black people that has continued to exist since slavery ended. It’s not really up for discussion. The mechanism of its continuing this long is racism and or white supremacy. This doesn’t require every white person in America to be racist or a white supremacist in order to continue. But it benefits every white American. Look at life expectancy. Look at access to medicine and healthcare. And these are systems. And its not a buzzword, any layman can look at employment rates of black versus white Americans, and then look at how most people’s healthcare is directly linked to their jobs and understand that black people are more at risk.
I’m not saying reparations is the solution and I don’t think many black Americans are naive enough to think so either but it’s a step in the right direction. Or do you want them to continue to suffer? Final question for you, would you rather live a life as an average Black American or an average white one? Bear in mind this means 3.5years shorter lifespan, around half of the earnings etc etc you can do the remainder of the research.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | October 3, 2020 1:09 AM |
Blacks are largely responsible for many of the problems that affect the black community.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | October 3, 2020 1:44 AM |
I'd rather be a rich bastard of any race than a regular white OR black American, because that's where the real disparity in income, life span, and access to health comes in. The US is full of white people who are dirt poor, homeless, who have little access to education or health care, being white hasn't done them any damn good.
You're just looking at the wrong issue. The real disparity in the USA isnt black vs. white, it's rich vs. Everyone else.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | October 3, 2020 1:49 AM |
If the black person is half white do they get half the reperations?
by Anonymous | reply 87 | October 3, 2020 1:49 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 88 | October 3, 2020 1:53 AM |
That doesnt make the average white person rich, R88, any more than it makes the average american 100% white.
You have such a simplistic view of racial issues, R88/84, far too simple to have any thing to do with real-world public policy.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | October 3, 2020 1:58 AM |
