Duran Duran was as popular with straight guys as they were with straight girls in the 80s.
I always thought Roger Taylor was the hottest.

I knew a straight guy who was obsessed with them and wore a little bit of eyeliner.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 30, 2020 7:14 PM |
I always thought they were fágs.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 30, 2020 7:18 PM |
Yes, they've had a lot of great music.

I remember seeing a picture of a drummer from that band nude, and he was amazing. Don't remember his name, but my 16 year old world was rocked for years.

I miss the Good Ol' Days and "Hungry Like the Wolf" is fun to put on your Halloween playlist.

Someone on here posted one of the weirdest things a few years back - that you could rent Andy Taylor, their guitarist, for the weekend. I don’t get a gay vibe off him, but I do with Nick Rhodes.
Roger Taylor aged the best. Poor Nick has a Trumpian swirl hairstyle to cover his baldness.
I read John Taylor’s autobiography, The Pleasure Groove. Like most autobiographies written these days, there isn’t anything juicy. Two stories stood out as kind of funny/strange. First, he dated Bebe Buell, the famous model/rock star girlfriend but broke up with her when he read in British media that she had dated a lot of musicians! I guess he didn’t know and when he found out, didn’t like her anymore because of it?!
The second was that he was approach by a young woman in a nightclub who asked him to come over and say hi to her friend, who had a crush on her. He rudely declined but found out the next day that she was a model who had recently been on the cover of Vogue so THEN he wanted to bang her. He had to call and apologize first. So he wasn’t attracted to her until he found out she was a model lol.
Bananarama have a book coming out but I’m not gonna bother reading it since it will be likewise whitewashed.

by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 30, 2020 7:58 PM |
I liked their music but some of their videos are really fucking sexist.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 30, 2020 8:07 PM |
I preferred them before they Anglicized their name. Durand Durand is more regal sounding.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 30, 2020 8:58 PM |
OmG, Johns bio is boring as all fuck.
Nothing interesting.
How did they feel about making the videos? He said some were more hated than others, but it offered no perspective on being part of the biggest band in the entire world for a good stretch of time.
He says he had drinks with Freddie Mercury and others but what the fuck did they talk about? Did they do drugs, did Freddie come on to him? What?!?
I was very disappointed 😞

OMG R9 - yep that was him. I feel 16 again.

Some time ago Funko said they would make Duran Duran dolls but they haven’t yet.

I remember the world premiere of the video for "Is There Something I Should Know" on MTV
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 1, 2020 2:52 AM |
Nick Rhodes seemed so fuckable, and John Taylor like the guy next door you'd want to marry.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 1, 2020 2:53 AM |
NO str8 guys liked DD.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 1, 2020 2:55 AM |
If straight guys didn't like them, their videos wouldn't have been playing twenty-four hours a day
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 1, 2020 2:59 AM |
My parents had the x-rated Girls on Film on VHS. It was awesome and even though it was a lot of naked women, it felt like a really gay video. Also there was a muscular black dude in a thong thrashing around that was captivating.

Linky. Yeah, the scissoring, sliding on the pole, the horse rub down, the life guard.

Umm....a lot of gay men liked their music too, you know?🙄

by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 1, 2020 3:52 AM |
That was just Simon.
Idiot nearly died.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 1, 2020 3:55 AM |
R24 Yes! That part with the “horse” being sponged down was so hot. The lifeguard was also hot.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 1, 2020 4:08 AM |
I played 'Hungry Like the Wolf' while I was killing some of my children!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 1, 2020 4:13 AM |
I would have sucked Simon's dick right off him in the middle of main street at high noon. (Drummer Roger can be porkin' me from behind.)
My favorite video...

I saw the in Hyde Park right before the London Olympics. They were awesome!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 1, 2020 4:29 AM |
I saw them at the Cosmopolitan in Vegas about a year ago now.
Fantastic!
Vegas was fun. A lot of shopping and a great Bellagio Champagne Brunch.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 1, 2020 6:13 AM |
It wasn't the straight guys who like Duran Duran in my high school.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 1, 2020 7:10 AM |
The old adage are they gay or british? I guess they were british.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 1, 2020 7:27 AM |
R13 That's Shocking!
They MUST be cancelled! Retrospectively! Immediately!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 1, 2020 7:34 AM |
Did gay men really listen to them? My era, but I didn't .Always thought they were naff as fuck like all those silly pop bands at the time who thought they were all so brilliant Spandau Ballet, Sting, et al. All they did was make young girls pussies wet for the first time and made a fortune doing it. Can't remember dancing/listening to any of that shit in gay clubs. As someone above said they listened to it in HIGH SCHOOL for fuck sake.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 1, 2020 9:07 AM |
OP I’m completely confused about what your thread is about. Is it a declarative statement we are to debate? Was it supposed to be a question we are to weigh in on? Are you trying to alienate us with straight topics?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 1, 2020 9:45 AM |
they liked girls on film and then rio, after no.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 1, 2020 8:35 PM |
Dang I wish I could rent John Taylor, still a hot daddy.

I think the videos for "Girls on Film" and "The Chauffeur" hold their own with the best video art of the 1980's, seriously. I think there is incredible sexual sophistication in those videos. They took it about as far as they could in the bizarre/coked-out "Wild Boys" video with John Taylor restrained BDSM-style on the overturned/burned-out car. I thought it was hot, but I can see how it came, like, "yea" close to jumping the shark.
According to John Taylor, when the video for "Rio" came out, they were all still living with their parents.
He's been sober in AA since the mid/late 1990's. Nick Rhodes has aged unbelievably well--I think he looks amazing. That mauve lipstick must have been the source of eternal youth. Simon LeBon became a grandfather a couple of years ago.
I grew up in Topeka, KS, which used to be home of the Menninger Foundation (mental hospital, where many celebs stayed over the decades, to get help away from the glare/stresses of fame), and there was a rumor that Roger Taylor had checked himself in there after he left Duran Duran.
I heard Andy Warhol had a huge crush on Nick. Duran Duran was big right around the time Andy died.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 2, 2020 1:23 AM |
Like their music.
But, I will never forgive them for the Nagel Prints and black lacquer furniture that become popular during the 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 2, 2020 1:29 AM |
No one would have guessed Andy Taylor would be the only member to have a solo hit single with "Take It Easy" from the American Anthem soundtrack.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 2, 2020 4:30 AM |
R47 John Taylor also had a hit single with this song.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 2, 2020 4:35 AM |
R50 Can you post any Simon nudes you have?
TIA!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 2, 2020 3:24 PM |
That was my experience too, R22. We got a jukebox in our little high school break room and the students complained about Duran/Duran and Pet Shop Boys until the admin removed the songs.
A friend of mine got revenge by playing the Beatles' "Lady Madonna" over and over again, saying "it's such a good Christian song!" Drove everyone out of the lounge after a week.

"Little girls" as you say were not into DD back then. Mostly teens to 20somethings but you knew that, dear.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 2, 2020 5:00 PM |
Straight guys might watch the videos if they came on MTV because of all the hot chicks, but they didn't buy the albums or go out of their way to listen to their songs.
Straight guys in high school in the 80s were clueless but they generally didn't care for the glam rock bands. They also didn't know who was gay and who wasn't. I remember in class one day these guys were talking about how hot the lady in the "Nikita" video was and one guy said, "That Elton John gets the hottest chicks for his videos, he must pull a ton of tang" and I about choked on my own tongue trying not to laugh out loud.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 2, 2020 5:58 PM |
The weird thing about the "Nikita" video is that Nikita is a male name in Eastern Europe, no? (Nikita Khrushchev, etc). And the Nikita in the video was, like, an East German border guard in very masculine military garb, as I remember. Funny. Trying to portray Elton as a heterosexual Cold War stalker is like...Soviet "disinformation" or something.
About Duran Duran...Robert Smith has claimed that Duran Duran were desperate Cure fans in the 80s, showing up to their shows etc., even though the Cure couldn't stand them. Kind of sad, because that first Duran Duran album could have led to something more Cure-like/New Wave, but they sold out completely.
Even to this day, Simon LeBon claims that The Cure are "the only band that Duran Duran can be compared to." Kind of a stretch, I think.

I remember fans of Duran Duran and fans of Culture Club hated one another

by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 7, 2020 3:07 AM |
Not all straight guys, but certainly some. Maybe some were exposed via girlfriends or sisters, but, yeah, straight guys liked Duran Duran, though some made fun of them.
