Wallace couldn't really control it. Granted, Trump is always going to pose problems in any debate since he talks constantly. Could the answer be as easy as giving the moderator mic cutting ability?
Who would be the best debate moderator for Trump and Biden?

The second Presidential debate will be a town hall type debate, moderator will be Steve Scully of C-SPAN.
The next debate will be between Harris and Pence. Trump will be upset with Pence for not talking over Harris and making himself a huge ass like Trump did but the number of lies Pence will tell might be the same.

Electrodes that will shock them when they speak during a rebuttal.
But it is pointless at this point. Biden should put out a statement saying that as Trump will never allow him to speak without constant interruptions it will no longer be in anyone's interest to continue these debates. Trump's base will support him no matter what ridiculous thing he says or does and the undecideds will continue to be decided because God knows why.

Nancy Pelosi was right. What's the point when one person is there ready to debate and the other is there to shout insults and lies?
Politics wasn't served: understanding the issues and their positions barely happened. If they refuse the moderator control of the mic, they should have no debate. If the network broadcasting one can't get them to agree - and operate under rules of engagement unlike those last night, why bother? Let Trump walk off or not show up. It then becomes a fully-paid primetime ad for Biden that Trump can't replace. If they agree to show up the next time, and do, let Trump storm off in a huff if he doesn't like the way he's forced to follow the rules.
Nothing serves us better than the contrast between Trump's drug-fuelled lunacy and Biden's calm demeanor.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 30, 2020 6:54 PM |
There probably won't be any more Biden/Trump debates. After last night's debacle, the Debate Commission has promised to enact unspecified changes to the format - which Biden will accept, and Trump will reject as "unfair" and "rigged." Thus giving him an excuse to pull out of the last 2 debates.

No, seriously. She's no fan of Trump, and she WILL NOT take shit from him. She'll scold him, then put him in his place & tear him a new asshole for bringing disgrace to the Party she loves. If he attacks HER, he'll lose whatever habitual-Republican support he had left, because Condoleeza is held in *very* high esteem by non-Trumpet Republicans.
And GOD HELP Trump if he questioned her patriotism, intelligence, or integrity on TV. She might or might not have drank a bit too much neocon Kool-Aid growing up, but even Democrats respect her beliefs as heartfelt & genuine. Trump disrespecting Condoleeza is the kind of thing that would get the BUSH family to go on TV to urge Republicans to vote for Biden.
It would be the perfect set-up & Trap, and Trump would walk directly into it thinking she had his back, instead of having a knife ready to jam INTO his back while calling him the Antichrist.

R51 I like Rogan. Dore on the other hand is genuinely ignorant. He genuinely has no idea how anything in government works. He has no idea how power operates. He is ignorant on political issues as well. And pop culture. He just has this wild leftist perspective which is ok with me but he's ignored mainstream media for past twenty years (if he ever read it to begin with). Not sure what the appeal is for Rogan there, other than it fits with his enjoyment of real outsider perspectives. There's a reason he had Tulsi and Yang on the podcast (but did virtually no preparation beforehand).

This really hurt Wallace a lot. He was way out of his league with this. He should be ashamed of himself the way he let this get out of hand. It didn't occur to him this would happen? Like the Donald team agrees to this before hand and they couldn't be laughing at these rules behind his back? He was completely unprepared. He had no idea of Trump's aggressive bullying tactics? He blamed them BOTH?!!!
They needed somebody like that black woman at that town hall meeting who told Trump in a civilized firm way to shut the fuck up until she was finished asking her question and he stayed quiet like an embarrassed chastened school boy.

Would it hurt Biden very much if he refused any further debates with Trump? Instead he could put out a very forceful well detailed explanation of why attempting to debate this man with his constant inaccuracies, pathological inability to tell the truth, his constant unending interruptions not allowing Biden to speak, and vicious personal attacks on his family preclude any possibility of civilized informed debate.
Even that fact that they might have to turn off Trump's mic because of his madness and make further(impossible) rules is such a scandal I am shocked they are even considering it.

The fact that Wallace got so flustered when he knew what Trump was all about was very unprofessional.
And 'Mr. President you're going to be happy with this question.' WHAT THE FUCK! He didn't feel the need to ask Biden any happy questions.

This guy. Trump's acting up would be inconceivable!

"I guess I didn't realize - and there was no way you could, hindsight being 20/20 - that this was going to be the president's strategy, not just for the beginning of the debate but the entire debate," he said.
Duh. Yes this was absolutely impossible to see despite covering Trump for years. It was a total shock!
Chris it was your job and your many advisors who helped you prepare as well to see that there was going to be a 99% possibility that this was going to be his strategy.

I came here to post Samuel Jackson's name. Tweeters were suggesting him as the debate wore on. But I also like the Judge Judy suggestion.
I cannot lay too much blame on Wallace. There's no way to control Trump without a kill switch for his microphone.

'There's no way to control Trump without a kill switch for his microphone.'
Shouldn't that be unacceptable for a presidential debate? Besides he would start yelling anyway. A taser every time he interrupts would be preferable and you know it wouldn't keep him quiet for more than two minutes. If that.
