Zendaya Is in Talks to Play Ronnie Spector in Biopic
UPDATED: I’ve learned that A24 will team on the Ronnie Spector film with New Regency. The two partnered previously on the Robert Eggers-directed The Lighthouse, and they are part of the Malcolm & Marie film.
EXCLUSIVE: A24 is putting together a film package that will have Emmy-winning Euphoria star Zendaya attached to play singer Ronnie Spector in a film about her life. Deals have just closed for Spector’s life rights and for Be My Baby, the memoir she wrote with Vince Waldron. I’m hearing that early conversations are happening with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury to write the script.
The film will be produced by Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, Tom Shelly and Zendaya. Jonathan Greenfield and Spector will be the exec producers.
Much the way that Aretha Franklin personally endorsed Jennifer Hudson to play her in the upcoming MGM biopic Respect, Spector chose Zendaya as the actress she wished to portray her in her early years. The singer grew up in Spanish Harlem and started girl group the Ronettes with her older sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. They were signed by famously volatile record producer Phil Spector to his Philles Records label and there they had their 1963 breakthrough hit “Be My Baby.” She married Spector and, as she writes in the book, it was clear she had made a big mistake when she woke up one morning to the sound of bars being installed on the windows of their mansion. She smartly fought for the rights to her music in the subsequent divorce and eventually was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She had a second wind when she reprised her most famous hit in singing a duet with Eddie Money on “Take Me Home Tonight” in 1986.
It looked like the movie would take root at Fox last year, but the sale of that studio to Disney stopped its momentum. A24 is a good fit, as it produces Euphoria for HBO. Zendaya just became the youngest actress to win Lead Actress in a Drama Series — she is 24 — and the second Black woman to win that category after Viola Davis in 2015. She is about as hot a young actress as you’ll find. To go with her work in Spider-Man: Homecoming and its sequels, she co-stars in the upcoming Denise Villenueve-directed Dune, and also Malcolm & Marie. On that one, she asked Euphoria EP Sam Levinson to write a movie that could be shot during the pandemic. They got Tenet’s John David Washington to co-star, and the resulting small-budget black-and-white film created a heated auction at the Toronto Film Festival Market before Netflix bought it for $30 million.
The life rights and book deals were made together by Ronnie’s manager Jon Greenfield and Hotchkiss Daily & Associates. Zendaya is repped by CAA, Monster Talent Management and her lawyers at Skrzyniarz & Mallean.

Interesting casting. I'm into this!
Who will play Phil?

I'll be very surprised if she manages to pull off Ronnie Spector's way of speaking. Ronnie is tiny and cute (though she's said to swear like a longshoreman). Zendaya is certainly pretty enough but she's chill and West coast.

I can see Shia LaBoeuf as Phil. He's apparently 5'7", which probably means 5'5".

Michael Cera for Phil.

I like Janelle Monae, but playing Ronnie Spector would have been weird, like Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone weird. Ronnie personally approved Zendaya, so it makes sense they are going in this direction.

What I dread is that Zendaya will probably insist on pulling a Zelwegger and do her own singing. Like her or not, Ronnie Spector's voice is unmistakable. Not so Zendaya's.

Janelle Monae could play Darlene Love. If she's in the story......

No, Janelle could play LaLa Brooks of the Crystals.

R34: La La Brooks was even younger than Ronnie. She was like 13 doing Da do ron ron

LaLa was about 16 in 1963. She wasn't the first lead singer in The Crystals.

LaLa (second from left) doesn't even look the youngest here. Far right is Barbara Alston, the lead on "Uptown" etc.

Was that Darlene Love, r36?
I know it's the Ronnie Spector biopic, and we also have "Baby, I Love You," "Walking in the Rain," and "The Best Part of Breaking Up" to get to, but do you think they'd at least give us excerpts from "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Then He Kissed Me" (which I like even more than "Be My Baby")?

[Quote] Was that Darlene Love, [R36]?
Darlene Love was the lead singer of the Blossoms. Spector used them on two Crystals hits, "He's a Rebel" and "He's Sure the Boy I Love." LaLa, who was a member of the Crystals, sang lead on "Then He Kissed Me," "Da Do Ron Ron" etc.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 1, 2020 1:36 AM

Darlene also sang on Be My Baby. So was Cher. Ronnie was the only Ronette that sang on the records.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 1, 2020 1:38 AM

Not quite true. Nedra sang lead on some album tracks, that came out under The Crystals name.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 1, 2020 1:40 AM
|
Once Spector moved his operations to Los Angeles, Darlene, Fanita James and a third member, often Jack Nitzsche's wife, Grazia (who was white), would sing background. Cher was Sonny's girlfriend/child bride. She wasn't a Spector mainstay.

I agree with R11 who said Michael Cera should play Phil Spector. He looks a lot like him and he's a great actor.

Timmy, Zac, Jesse, Michael, Paul: who is closest to Phil Spector's height (stated as 5'8"; by now, 5'5"?)
Timmy's 5"11" IIRC. How about the others? Should Tammy Cruise play current-day Phil (not that they look anything alike)?

R71, such a brilliant idea! It would be cool to have an LA/Laurel Canyon Universe, NY universe, Detroit Universe, Memphis Universe and London Universe. It still surprises me there hasn’t been a deep dive into 50/60’s girl groups/women singers.
As an aside, if a biopic was made about Tami Terrell, Janelle Monae would be a good choice to play her.

I remember how she was bashed for not being black enough to play Aaliyah, till the bullies made her lose the job (which was a good thing because that biopic was a disaster).
And now she is doing great
