Glasses up or down on your kitchen shelves?

I’m kind of grossed out when I see drinking glasses stored upside down on shelves. How often do people empty out their cabinets and scrub the interiors? Not terribly often, I’m guessing.

Please stop doing this.

But do people put them upside down on the bare shelves, i.e. no wipeable shelf paper. When I see glasses turned up anything airborne or critter that happens to get in like ants will be crawling right into and out of the glasses leaving whatever behind. Sure you can rinse them again, before use, but if they're down it's a closed seal.

Yes, I have thought way too much about this.

by Anonymousreply 1September 28, 2020 6:35 AM

Down. Except for wine glasses.

by Anonymousreply 2September 28, 2020 6:44 AM

What kind of a gay-ass motherfucking retard puts glasses in a cupboard open side up? Do you like drinking dust (i.e. sloughed-off epidermis)?

(I say this as a gay-ass motherfucking retard who was at least brought up properly)

by Anonymousreply 3September 28, 2020 6:58 AM

Dumbfuck OP, you’re picking those glasses up with your nasty-ass hands. Do you want to put your lips where those fingers have been? You specifically are a booger roller and we both know and accept that.

Store your fucking glasses mouth down. We don’t make threats. They’re limiting. You shit head. Do it and do it right.

by Anonymousreply 4September 28, 2020 7:02 AM

Down on a clean paper towel that gets changed regularly.

by Anonymousreply 5September 28, 2020 8:31 AM

Few seem ready to disclose this secret about themselves.

Makes you wonder.

Who wants to be cunted at for how you store your glassware on your shelves? I stopped inviting gay people to my house about a year after joining DL. I'm not nearly perfect enough for you vaginatrices.

by Anonymousreply 9September 28, 2020 6:54 PM

R4 you’re picking those glasses up with your nasty-ass hands. Do you want to put your lips where those fingers have been?

You pick them up from the middle, the same as if you were drinking from them.

Unless you use a grabber?

[quote]R3 Do you like drinking dust (i.e. sloughed-off epidermis)?

The point of cabinet doors is to offer a barrier to this, aside from about 5% of the time.

by Anonymousreply 11September 28, 2020 7:13 PM

I was always told glasses go right side up because you can chip the edge of the glasses if placed upside-down.

by Anonymousreply 12September 28, 2020 7:17 PM

Thank you. The voice of reason!

Maybe we need to research how Carol Brady and Alice did this - -

by Anonymousreply 13September 28, 2020 7:19 PM

I'm more disturbed—"grossed out" overstates it—by how close the glasses are to each other in the OPic.

It is a hoarder’s cabinet, with too much stuff crammed in it... utilizing every trick in the book.

by Anonymousreply 15September 28, 2020 7:35 PM

I store mine up side up. No shelf liner. I drink water, etc., out of pub-style glasses b/c they hold a lot and they're easy to clean. I, too, dislike that photo at R14. The "glassware" is depressing to look at and it does look like a hoarder-type storage solution.

by Anonymousreply 16September 28, 2020 7:46 PM

Down,on no slip mats that get changed every few months. Even the tightest cabinet lets dust seep in ,not to mention critters. I rinse my glass ware before using anyway ,always have . I think I was traumatized as a child by a relatives house that had a hideous roach infestation . I refused to eat or drink over there ,causing some resentments in the family.

by Anonymousreply 17September 28, 2020 7:54 PM

You're all philistines. I drink right out of the hose/bottle/16 oz can.

There, there. I started this thread because I’m not a very devoted housekeeper myself. I only scrub out the inside of my cabinets every few years....which is why I don’t love the idea of glasses being stored upside down on the shelves.

Dishes, bowls and everything else get stored right side up... so I feel glasses are no different.

[quote]gay-ass motherfucking retard

In a forum of mostly gay men, I think the phrase would be "gay-ass faterfucking retard."

by Anonymousreply 20September 28, 2020 8:55 PM

Glasses down, asses up!

by Anonymousreply 21September 28, 2020 9:00 PM

When the insides of cups or mugs crack or craze, do you throw them away? I have some I really like, but they're 40+ years old and some have developed cracks. They're no longer made, or I'd buy new ones. I don't use them anymore, but I keep them on the mug shelf.

by Anonymousreply 22September 28, 2020 9:12 PM

Can you post of photo of what you're talking about, R22?

by Anonymousreply 23September 28, 2020 9:18 PM

Is this clear enough, r23? It's lots of black lines at the bottom of the mug.

by Anonymousreply 24September 28, 2020 9:26 PM

I'm not R22, but this is an example of 'crazing' in the ceramic glaze of a mug, R23 (look at the bottom of the mug).

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 25September 28, 2020 9:27 PM

Yes, r25, that's what I'm talking about. Mine are mostly longer cracks in the surface of the glaze, but it's the same effect: the coffee gets into the material beneath the glaze.

by Anonymousreply 26September 28, 2020 9:29 PM

R26, here's the site from which I posted the pic, which discusses crazing, its causes, etc.

by Anonymousreply 27September 28, 2020 9:31 PM

Lol I place them open up because that’s how my mother used to do it. Of course, if anyone placed them open down and I was drying dishes over their house, I respected their precedent. I’ll take an action to think about laying down a rubber mat and going bottom up.

by Anonymousreply 28September 28, 2020 9:33 PM

You are all crazing.

by Anonymousreply 29September 28, 2020 9:36 PM

Thanks, guys for posting photos of what mugs crazing looks like.

Honestly, R22, if you're not using these mugs and since you're asking, I'd throw them away.

by Anonymousreply 30September 28, 2020 9:38 PM

Crazing does not harm your food and marks that china as well loved. Use them until you’re done.

by Anonymousreply 31September 29, 2020 2:43 AM

I use shelf liners that are thin foam with perforations. The glasses go upside down, the small perforations.allow air in. Glasses don't chip.

by Anonymousreply 32September 29, 2020 2:49 AM

Up. My glasses are in constant use and probably each glass is washed daily. There’s no time for them to get dusty!

by Anonymousreply 33September 29, 2020 2:53 AM

Storing them face down runs the risk of trapping moisture and growing mold and bacteria.

Storing them face up runs the risk of having dust and/or bacteria land on them.

Either way, you’re doomed.

by Anonymousreply 34September 29, 2020 2:59 AM

I feel like this is the spaghetti draining thing all over again.

by Anonymousreply 35September 29, 2020 3:03 AM

We rim, suck strange dick and licks balls and you all are worried about germs or dust from a glass that is cleaned but stored face up?

by Anonymousreply 36September 29, 2020 3:04 AM

Amen, R10 and R32.

by Anonymousreply 37September 29, 2020 3:10 AM

In order to continue to do so R36, we must preserve the cleanliness of our drinking glasses.

by Anonymousreply 38September 29, 2020 3:11 AM

Rims up. I wash my glasses much more frequently than I wipe down my cupboards, so there will always be more dust on the cupboard. That being said, my house is very bug free... If I had roaches or anything, I'd probably reconsider (although... the roaches are crawling on the cupboard base, so... Anyway, most of my cups stack, so the top ones are used and washed really often, and protect the insides of the bottom ones.

by Anonymousreply 39September 29, 2020 3:14 AM

A spider in my mug is my greatest fear. True story.

by Anonymousreply 40September 29, 2020 3:25 AM

Oh, you girls have given me so much think about! And worry about!!! I was feeling the lack.

by Anonymousreply 41September 29, 2020 3:29 AM

R36 must be new here. Honey , blood has been drawn over draining pasta .

by Anonymousreply 42September 29, 2020 3:45 AM

The problem was rinsing pasta, not draining pasta.

by Anonymousreply 43September 29, 2020 4:02 AM

Bitch, it was both.

When you drain the pasta, you’re not reserving any of the starchy water to use to thin the sauce, if needed.

by Anonymousreply 44September 29, 2020 4:30 AM

I treat glasses like ass to be rimmed - regardless of the situation they get a FRESH WASHING

by Anonymousreply 45September 29, 2020 4:51 AM

Buck would have crafted special slotted cubes to gently stack cups and glasses upside down.

Of course, he’s still dead.

by Anonymousreply 46September 29, 2020 7:19 AM

DL is so funny at times.

by Anonymousreply 47September 29, 2020 7:47 AM

This is a simple one. If you live anywhere east of the Great plains, glasses upside down. (Cockroaches are much more prevalent in the east). In the west, right side up - but leave your cupboards closed, it's dustier in the West. Bacteria need moisture to live, so a dry glass in a dry climate is not going to harbor bacteria. Again, east coasters, you're on your own, but a glass face down has the potential to store moisture within it, so the pickier among you might be creating your own problem there.

by Anonymousreply 48September 29, 2020 9:08 AM

Problem solved. Glasses upside down. Clean surface, air circulation.

I'm sorry OP. I will stop immediately as you request. Thank you for pointing out my terrible transgression. Is 50 lashes enough?

Typically up, but we stack some tumblers and stemless wine glasses BOTH bottom and up - stacking them on each other.

by Anonymousreply 51September 29, 2020 4:25 PM

Loved your question OP. It depends on my mood. And I often re-wash/rinse glasses anyway when I'm about to use them. Hell, I love doing the dishes.

by Anonymousreply 52September 29, 2020 4:26 PM

I'm afraid to put my dishes in the dishwasher--when they're dry, they may still have TELLTALE water spots....must I wash my dishes after they've been in the dishwasher, dry them by hand, and then face the agony of which way to put on the shelf?

I'm telling you, it's too much for one woman to bear.

by Anonymousreply 53September 29, 2020 4:35 PM

Water spots marks you as irredeemable white trash R53 . Theres no reason to worry further . It wont matter .

by Anonymousreply 54September 29, 2020 5:37 PM

OP, you should sue your mother for letting you gnaw lead paint off of the windowsill as a child.

by Anonymousreply 55September 29, 2020 5:45 PM

OP is right, I always put them in the cupboard right side up, next to the colander thing I use to drain and rinse my pasta

Upside down retains moisture inside the glass, and the rim comes in contact with the shelf.

This grinds my gears at work, people pull clean glasses and cups out of the dishwashers and put them away upside down, and they dont dry out inside. They all get used up every day so wouldnt get a chance to get dust in them stored right side up

by Anonymousreply 56September 29, 2020 8:08 PM

I always keep my glasses up so the cockroaches have places to sleep at night.
