Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

I'm watching this mess on Hulu. Has anyone on here seen it? Heads up, it's not a sequel. They tell you that in the opening credits.

by Anonymousreply 31October 6, 2020 3:03 PM

It's really bad. You can tell it was made a straight man, unlike VOTD.

by Anonymousreply 1September 27, 2020 6:11 PM

Wasn't the screenplay by Roger Ebert

by Anonymousreply 2September 27, 2020 6:13 PM

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 3September 27, 2020 6:15 PM

I've never seen it but I heard that the screenplay was written by Roger Ebert.

by Anonymousreply 4September 27, 2020 6:16 PM

Thank you R3 . R2 got in before I did.

My favorite things about this movie:

1) The name Petronella

2) The downward spiral of the Greg Brady wannabe who tries to kill himself after the porn star calls him a fag and he rapes a chick

3) The boxer who never wears a shirt

4) The mean lesbian

5) The insane scene at the abortion doctor's office

by Anonymousreply 6September 27, 2020 6:22 PM

R5 I was gonna say you heard it from me. lol

by Anonymousreply 7September 27, 2020 6:24 PM

It’s my happening and it freaks me out!

by Anonymousreply 8October 5, 2020 4:51 AM

I loved it as a teenager.

by Anonymousreply 9October 5, 2020 4:57 AM

I love how the abortion scene SMASH CUTS to a closeup of an egg sizzling in a frying pan.

Also Princess Livingston, the montage of the cross-country drive where they sing "Come With the Gentle People," Edy Williams as Ashley St. Ives and so much more.

Jaqueline Sussan sued the studio because they used her title when the story was not a sequel.

Her estate won in court after she died.

by Anonymousreply 12October 5, 2020 5:13 AM

Jacqueline Sussan was a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 13October 5, 2020 5:14 AM

For years Edy Williams would parade around outside at the Oscar ceremonies wearing next to nothing and making a spectacle of herself. She's 79 now.

It’s a shame that “Immediately to the Left of the Valley of the Dolls” is stuck in Development Hell.

by Anonymousreply 17October 5, 2020 5:42 AM

The voice over at the end is special:

Z-Man: He forgot that life has many levels... ...and by choosing to live on only one, lost sight of reality.

Ashley: Men were toys for her amusement. Her total disregard for their feelings made love a stranger to her.

Lance Rocke: He never gave of himself. Those who only take must be prepared to pay the highest price of all.

Porter Hall used his profession to mask selfish interests... ...to betray the trust that should have been sacred.

Susan Lake: Perhaps too pure. Excessive goodness can often blind us... ...to the human failings of those less perfect.

Emerson found that something as precious as love... ...brings with it a demand for greater understanding.

Casey and Roxanne: Light and shadow. Theirs was not an evil relationship. But evil did come because of it.

Otto: An end to Martin Bormann?

Harris: He forgot that yesterday is only for remembering. Those who choose to live there lose sight of tomorrow.

Pet's mistake: A fleeting thing, born of emotion... ...yet it almost ruined the lives of two others.

Randy's body: A cage for an animal. It lifted him to the top of his field... ...but in the end, the beast almost killed him.

And Kelly? Her selfish involvement... ...so ready to turn her back on friendship. The road back is painful. But by her pain, she will never again forget. You must each decide what your life will be. You must always know that a hand extended to your fellow man... ...is a gesture of love. Love that asks nothing, expects nothing. It is simply there. And if love is in you, then gentle will be all your steps... ...as you walk beyond this valley.

Too bad Ebert died before he did a commentary. That would have been unreal.

by Anonymousreply 19October 5, 2020 8:07 AM

I really wanted to like this, but the treatment of the gay characters was pretty bad.

It may have been par for the course at the time it was made, but I expected better from Roger Ebert

by Anonymousreply 20October 5, 2020 8:12 AM

I like the party scene with the montage of cutaways and ‘Incense and Peppermints’ playing in the background.

by Anonymousreply 21October 5, 2020 8:25 AM

I have to admit that I was surprised to see the two women kiss on screen. I didn't realize movies were that progressive in 1970. That scene with Z Man in bed with Lance Rocke was funny.

by Anonymousreply 22October 5, 2020 2:34 PM

Z man was hot af

"You've been a broad all along, right, Barzell? A GODDAMN UGLY BROAD!"

by Anonymousreply 24October 5, 2020 3:33 PM

The film is a camp classic.

by Anonymousreply 25October 5, 2020 3:35 PM

R10 Is that Lucy's deleted scene that Gary talked the producers into cutting?

Well, you know how bitchy fags can be.

Tell me about it.

I like the song "In the Long Run" that plays as the group is driving across the country. Lynn Carey daughter of MacDonald Carey sings for Dolly read.

Ebert did do a commentary on the DVD.

by Anonymousreply 29October 5, 2020 4:38 PM

At least two costumes from the original worked their way into the movie. Neely's white coat and Jennifer's jumpsuit.

by Anonymousreply 30October 5, 2020 5:03 PM

Yes, and if memory serves he talked about how much fun he had writing the script.
