TIA.
Who covered “Windmills of Your Mind” best?

I’m laaaaazy. You expect me to look up the options? This thread would already be over 400 posts long and into its second iteration if OP had only made it a poll.

Oh.my.god. what a terrible song in any rendition. It's the musical equivalent to a circle in a spiral.

I prefer instrumentals. But for sung versions - Dusty obviously with honorable mention to Jose Feliciano.

Shircle in a shpiral.

It's one of those horrible, stupid songs that could only be popular in the 1960s.
The best cover was Dusty's but it is still a wretchedly bad, silly song.

Wow you cunts have no musicality. This is a Michel Legrand gem.

Wow, John Davidson had a really bad rug in the '70s.
You can see the dividing line on his album cover at R10.

I absolutely hate this song and had successfully blocked it from memory until tonight. However, I recall thinking Noel Harrison was cute; I was a weird child.

Alison Moyet sang a really nice cover of it.

Sting did a really great version, think it was used in "The Thomas Crown Affair" remake with Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo.
btw, R13, I don't think John Davidson ever wore a wig, I remember he had really thick hair. In fact, he still does! Some celebs have such thick hair, it looks like they're wearing a wig.

If Sinéad O'Connor had sung it, it would be the best version! Alas, she never...

Who didn't cover this krap? Seems like it would be the shorter list...

Sandra Bernhard

"You've got splinters in the Windmills of Your Mind!"

I love Swing Out Sister, but ... isn't Corinne singing flat and sharp all over the place at R14?
Or am I just in a bad mood?

Dusty!

Love this song and Dusty’s version in particular!

I think the orchestration sells the song. And Noel Harrison's rendition is my favorite.

Babs.

From memory it's a recording of a live performance they did on a radio show in the UK and was added as an extra track on one of the Kaleidoscope World singles.
Here's a slightly shorter version performed live for TV.

This is one of the most unnecessarily difficult songs to sing ever.
The lyrics are so stupid.
Singing this successfully is like having to do three cartwheels and a backflip before you can take a shit.

Was this song in Talented Mr. Ripley?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 26, 2020 8:51 AM |
I enjoy The Windmills of Your Mines.

That's a lovely rendition, R29. They should have put that on the record; R14 was an off night.
I'd like to hear SOS do this today — they're still at it and Corinne sounds great.

That was Lullaby for Cain by Sinead OConnor r31

If a singer can actually and easily sing, it's not difficult. The progressions are all so natural and one can improvise in the opposite direction and it doesn't kill the tune.

Thanks r34

Thanks for the Allison Moyet recommendation
Unfortunately the ITunes Store doesn’t carry the full album, “Voice.” 😔 she covers some other great standards on it.

You know instantly that Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics.
They over-rhyme everything.

Her take on Bacharach/Costello's God Give Me Strength is sublime. No one can beat Kristen Vigard/Illeana Douglas, but god she gives it a good go.

Weirdly, Tina Arena did a very good bilingual version. I prefer it in French. Maybe because I can’t truly understand the lyrics and I can just focus on the melody or maybe because the central metaphor has a little more emotional impact: windmills in my heart, as opposed to mind.

Dusty! Yes, it is the most known but still the best. Sting's version for the remake movie wasn't awful.
