TIA.

I’m laaaaazy. You expect me to look up the options? This thread would already be over 400 posts long and into its second iteration if OP had only made it a poll.

Oh.my.god. what a terrible song in any rendition. It's the musical equivalent to a circle in a spiral.

by Anonymousreply 4September 25, 2020 10:16 PM

I prefer instrumentals. But for sung versions - Dusty obviously with honorable mention to Jose Feliciano.

by Anonymousreply 5September 25, 2020 10:21 PM

Shircle in a shpiral.

by Anonymousreply 6September 25, 2020 10:22 PM

It's one of those horrible, stupid songs that could only be popular in the 1960s.

The best cover was Dusty's but it is still a wretchedly bad, silly song.

by Anonymousreply 7September 25, 2020 10:22 PM

Wow you cunts have no musicality. This is a Michel Legrand gem.

Pity Claudine Longet never recorded it.

Wow, John Davidson had a really bad rug in the '70s.

You can see the dividing line on his album cover at R10.

Swing Out Sister did a nice version

I absolutely hate this song and had successfully blocked it from memory until tonight. However, I recall thinking Noel Harrison was cute; I was a weird child.

by Anonymousreply 16September 26, 2020 5:01 AM

Alison Moyet sang a really nice cover of it.

Sting did a really great version, think it was used in "The Thomas Crown Affair" remake with Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo.

btw, R13, I don't think John Davidson ever wore a wig, I remember he had really thick hair. In fact, he still does! Some celebs have such thick hair, it looks like they're wearing a wig.

If Sinéad O'Connor had sung it, it would be the best version! Alas, she never...

by Anonymousreply 19September 26, 2020 5:58 AM

Who didn't cover this krap? Seems like it would be the shorter list...

Sandra Bernhard

"You've got splinters in the Windmills of Your Mind!"

I love Swing Out Sister, but ... isn't Corinne singing flat and sharp all over the place at R14?

Or am I just in a bad mood?

by Anonymousreply 23September 26, 2020 6:06 AM

Dusty!

by Anonymousreply 24September 26, 2020 6:10 AM

Love this song and Dusty’s version in particular!

by Anonymousreply 25September 26, 2020 6:22 AM

I think the orchestration sells the song. And Noel Harrison's rendition is my favorite.

From memory it's a recording of a live performance they did on a radio show in the UK and was added as an extra track on one of the Kaleidoscope World singles.

Here's a slightly shorter version performed live for TV.

This is one of the most unnecessarily difficult songs to sing ever.

The lyrics are so stupid.

Singing this successfully is like having to do three cartwheels and a backflip before you can take a shit.

by Anonymousreply 30September 26, 2020 7:45 AM

Was this song in Talented Mr. Ripley?

by Anonymousreply 31September 26, 2020 7:51 AM

I enjoy The Windmills of Your Mines.

by Anonymousreply 32September 26, 2020 7:56 AM

That's a lovely rendition, R29. They should have put that on the record; R14 was an off night.

I'd like to hear SOS do this today — they're still at it and Corinne sounds great.

by Anonymousreply 33September 26, 2020 8:04 AM

That was Lullaby for Cain by Sinead OConnor r31

by Anonymousreply 34September 26, 2020 9:43 AM

If a singer can actually and easily sing, it's not difficult. The progressions are all so natural and one can improvise in the opposite direction and it doesn't kill the tune.

by Anonymousreply 35September 26, 2020 9:51 AM

Thanks r34

by Anonymousreply 36September 26, 2020 2:55 PM

Thanks for the Allison Moyet recommendation

Unfortunately the ITunes Store doesn’t carry the full album, “Voice.” 😔 she covers some other great standards on it.

by Anonymousreply 37September 26, 2020 3:50 PM

You know instantly that Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the lyrics.

They over-rhyme everything.

[quote}Unfortunately the ITunes Store doesn’t carry the full album, “Voice.” 😔 she covers some other great standards on it.

Her take on Bacharach/Costello's God Give Me Strength is sublime. No one can beat Kristen Vigard/Illeana Douglas, but god she gives it a good go.

by Anonymousreply 39September 26, 2020 3:53 PM

Weirdly, Tina Arena did a very good bilingual version. I prefer it in French. Maybe because I can’t truly understand the lyrics and I can just focus on the melody or maybe because the central metaphor has a little more emotional impact: windmills in my heart, as opposed to mind.

by Anonymousreply 40September 26, 2020 3:57 PM

Dusty! Yes, it is the most known but still the best. Sting's version for the remake movie wasn't awful.
