Which Millennial still In is the most ridiculous, decades on?

I an going to have nightmares from that picture. Curse you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1September 23, 2020 1:19 PM

You wouldn’t hesitate to drop to your knees for him, R1.

by Anonymousreply 2September 23, 2020 1:27 PM

none of them are attractive enough for me to want to pretend they're gay, OP.

Tommy Kirk

by Anonymousreply 4September 23, 2020 2:15 PM

R3 there are definitively more than a couple of gay guys among the poll options.

And the question was ‘which one is the biggest laughing stock?’, not ‘which one do you want to nail?’

by Anonymousreply 5September 25, 2020 12:38 AM

Disney is mecca for fatsos.

by Anonymousreply 6September 25, 2020 1:13 AM

R6 no argument there.

by Anonymousreply 7September 25, 2020 12:20 PM

Don Bluth is still alive, though he's been reduced to online begging for whatever projects he has going.

Wasn't there rumors alleging that Cole is a closet bisexual?

These are the not the hottest Disney guys at all. If you were a Millennial you also would not forget the hotties of the late 90s and early 2000s era Disney Channel as well.

For example: Raviv "Ricky" Ullman, Eric Lively, Zac Efron, Jesse McCartney, AJ Trauth, Lee Thomas Young, Erik Von Detten, Ben Foster, Ryan Merriman, Adam Lamberg, Michael Seater, Patrick Levis, Chez Starbuck, Kyle Schmid and Corbin Bleu.

R11 Erik von Detten is the forgotten Prince of the Disney Channel. Always hoped and suspected he could be bi, but maybe that’s just because he was so gorgeous.

Sadly, he’s no longer working as an actor, and he’s lost to the world of the heteros.

They replaced Erik's role after he left 'So Weird' to do 'Odd Man Out' with Eric Lively who plays his brother in the show. Eric is the brother of Robin and Blake Lively in real life. He inherited the Lively beauty but he isn't acting anymore.

Brad Renfro was only in one Disney film Tom & Huck with JTT. I don't think he should be considered in this list. He was the male Brooke Shields or Natalie Portman, as a child actor he played roles that were very adult, sophisticated and edgy for his age.

If you include Disney films and Disney TV productions then you have JTT, Taran Noah Smith, Zach Ty Bryan, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, Matthew Lawrence, Joey Lawrence, Andy Lawrence, Haley Joel Osment, Tahj Mowry, Jordan Brower, Nick Robinson, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Jacob Zachar, Hutch Dano, Kelly Blatz, Logan Miller etc.

by Anonymousreply 18September 26, 2020 6:41 PM

Also Ethan Peck and Chris Zylka from ABC Family's TV version of 10 Things I Hate About You.

I voted Kevin out of nostalgia. I am one of the youngest posters here (27) and watching Disney Channel as a minor and seeing Kevin I always sensed he was “like me”. This is before going on the internet and seeing a ton of people thought the same thing as me lol.

But Lucas Grabeel is an odd one pretending to be straight still.

Oh and Kenton Duty lol

[quote]Which Millennial still In is the most ridiculous, decades on?

[italic]What?[/italic]

by Anonymousreply 23September 26, 2020 7:11 PM

Technically they are all Millennials in the list but Shia, Lucas and Brad are older Millennials.

I'm 27 also but because I was a guy, I stopped caring about Disney Channel once it became all teen girl sitcoms. Once they took off Raven, Corey in the House, American Dragon, Kim Possible, Proud Family Even Stevens, Sister Sister, Lizzie and Boy Meets World in reruns I stopped watching. I didn't really care about Hannah Montana, Suite Life on Deck or Wizards of Waverly Place. I did enjoy Phineas and Ferb though and watched it when it was on. When I babysat in my later teens, I definitely grew out of it because I hated Jessie and Austin & Ally with a burning passion but my younger relatives would love to watch them.

I didn't care about The Jonas Brothers at all but I did think Joe was good-looking. That one song they had "Burning Up" was decent and catchy. I only watched High School Musical for Zac Efron and Corbin Bleu.

I did still watch some Nick sitcoms in my high school years though like iCarly, Victorious and Big Time Rush. I think it helped they were written with a lot of adult viewers in mind and the humor was more dark and adult.

I feel most people stop watching Disney Channel once they reach their high school years. A lot of teen idols are really marketed to tweens while teens themselves lust after older stars.

by Anonymousreply 24September 26, 2020 7:22 PM

I voted Michael Musto.

by Anonymousreply 25September 26, 2020 7:23 PM

I forgot to mention Life with Derek. I enjoyed that a lot too. I liked it was the only Disney (yes I know it's from some Canadian channel) show that didn't have a laugh track and it reminded me of older Disney sitcoms I liked like Even Stevens and Phil of the Future. Plus Michael Seater is hot.

by Anonymousreply 26September 26, 2020 7:24 PM

I couldn't decide between Kevin and Lucas. Eventually , I went with Lucas because Kevin bearded up.

by Anonymousreply 27September 26, 2020 7:31 PM

Lucas is the obvious answer. The only attractive person in this list is Brad but he died a long time ago.

by Anonymousreply 28September 26, 2020 7:33 PM

[quote] I did still watch some Nick sitcoms in my high school years though like iCarly, Victorious and Big Time Rush. I think it helped they were written with a lot of adult viewers in mind and the humor was more dark and adult.

Uh, *nervous side glance* you can thank Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider for that.

by Anonymousreply 29September 26, 2020 7:36 PM

R29 Yes unfortunately. I noticed he stopped all his restraint with Victorious and went all out in sexualizing teenage girls. It was more subtle in Zoey 101 and iCarly. To be far, none of his shows are watchable now to me at all except maybe Drake and Josh and further back All That and The Amanda Show. Schneider is the pedo version of Tarantino.

I think Ned's Declassified was the only legitimately well-written live-action Nickelodeon show besides Pete & Pete in my opinion. No laugh track and good surreal humor.

Gabreel's every hole has been well-used by Disney producers.

r45 Simon Rex who was a model, an MTV VJ in the mid-90s and appeared in a few shows like What I Like About You? was in porn prior to being cast. I guess since it was the 90s, it was easier to hide it. He did solo videos for Club 1821.

As a Xennial, Boy Meets World was the last of the teen shows I ever watched to the end. Hardly familiar with the stuff produced on Disney channel. Nickelodeon jumped the shark in 1997. Before that, it was the best.

I should say Boy Meets World was one of the earliest shows I would watch religiously and when it went off the air, I'd had already outgrown the rest of Disney and Nick's output. Also was into The Wonder Years and Saved by the Bell (and it's various clones). Nick at Nite was also hugely popular in my household (60's nostalgia was riding high up until the mid nineties). Most Xennials look at shows like Hannah Montana and Even Stevens with disdain. And looking at the clips today all seem to confirm my suspicions that the 2000s sucked.

by Anonymousreply 52September 26, 2020 8:53 PM

R52 Not wrong definitely took a turn for the manufactured and artificial. Even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire look very quant compared to Hannah Montana and Shake It Up. But Saved By The Bell was the original Disney Channel-type tweencom.

He's all tatted up now. Supposedly, he was photographed taking a piss on a Hollywood street, but I've never been able to find such a picture online.

by Anonymousreply 59September 26, 2020 9:15 PM

I’m 24 and grew up in the golden era of Disney Channel! A few my friends (girls) had JONAS lunchboxes in middle school and several actually got purity rings because the Jonas Brothers wore them. The Jonas Brothers were huge. Then Justin Bieber took the crown, and then One Direction.

I still remember when High School Musical premiered. I was 9 years old and I thought it was the greatest movie I had ever seen. It’s all anyone could talk about in school

My favorite Disney Channel shows were Even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire. Lizzie McGuire was very real and grounded when dealing with topics preteens faced. Now everything is to ott quirky and perfect. Even Stevens was just hilarious. Everyone in that cast was firing on all cylinders. Shia was a Star.

I did watch Suite Life of Zack and Cody and I had a big crush on Dylan. He seems like a much, much more pleasant than Cole

by Anonymousreply 60September 26, 2020 9:16 PM

Kenton Duty was let go from “Shake It Up” because he tried to fuck Adam Irigoyen, who was uncomfortable on set with him.

by Anonymousreply 61September 26, 2020 9:17 PM

And yes, Nickelodeon had great shows as well. As Told By Ginger to me is/was a perfect show. Dan Schenider’s early shows like Kenan and Kel, The Amanda Show, and Drake and Josh were great too

by Anonymousreply 62September 26, 2020 9:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 64September 26, 2020 9:25 PM

I thought I was one of the cool kids because I was one of the few who hated Power Rangers. And yet decades later I went to see the reboot in theaters and enjoyed it.

by Anonymousreply 65September 26, 2020 9:26 PM

I think the golden era of Disney Channel was 1997 to 2006. When it still aired Disney cartoons like Chip n Dale, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck but mixed it with original content like the Bug Juice, So Weird, Even Stevens, Flash Forward, Jett Jackson and The Jersey. They also aired syndicated reruns of Brotherly Love, Boy Meets World, Growing Pains, Dinosaurs, Smart Guy and Sister, Sister. I remember they used to also air reruns of Adventures in Wonderland, Mickey Mouse Club and classic Disney shorts and movies at night and called that block "Vault Disney". I think Lizzie McGuire was the tipping point when they began investing in developing sitcoms surrounding teen pop idols due to Hilary's music career being a surprise success. The also had Alexz Johnson, Dream Street and Myra but they didn't make hits like Hilary. Then The Cheetah Girls, That's So Raven, Jesse McCartney, Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers they started getting formulaic with it.

by Anonymousreply 66September 26, 2020 9:31 PM

Hello Zoogsters!

by Anonymousreply 67September 26, 2020 9:32 PM

Zoog Disney captured the Y2K era and aesthetic perfectly well. When the internet was taking over and every kid was intrigued by it. I remember they had Britney Spears, NSYNC, Backstreet and Aaron Carter concert specials too. I first saw the music video for NSYNC's Pop on Disney.

R71 I always thought her character was very annoying too. I was surprised she became the biggest pop star from Nickelodeon and they didn't even promote her. I mean non-singing Emma Roberts, Miranda Cosgrove and Victoria Justice weren't much competition though. Avan really was the only reason I watched Victorious but his character was barely there just sort of a walking prop but he was pretty.

by Anonymousreply 72September 26, 2020 10:06 PM

Lee Thompson Young was a beautiful young man and his career was going well. Shame he took his life. I hate how Disney finally acknowledged So Weird after pretending it didn't exist for almost 20 years but still refuses to acknowledge The Famous Jett Jackson and also The Jersey. Lee was an icon to young black Millennials.

Disney Channel also had a teen soap called In A Heartbeat which featured half the cast of Animorphs in it. Shawn Ashmore and Christoper Ralph are both hotties. Chris reminds me a lot of Keanu Reeves, he was gorgeous as Tobias in Animorphs

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 74September 26, 2020 10:20 PM

Animorphs from Nickelodeon. They aged the characters up from the books, so they were like 16 and 17 in the TV show rather than 10 and 11 like in the books.

I heard she spends most of her time yachting. And i saw that the actress who plays Jade got married to someone who used to work on the show and is twice her age. There's no way that show wasn't fucked up behind the scenes.

by Anonymousreply 77September 26, 2020 10:42 PM

R24/R71/R77 yes, Nickelodeon/Schneider have a lot to answer for and a lot of dues to pay regarding the girls & young women they have employed over the years. Such a shame, as their quality of childrens’ programming far outshone Disney Channel.

Drake & Josh were Love’s Young Dream but ten years ago. Couldn’t keep their eyes or hands off of each other. What happened?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 79September 26, 2020 10:52 PM

Drake and Josh had such chemistry with each other on The Amanda Show and outstaged Amanda that Schneider had to create a spin-off for them. I remember the Tony Pajamas sketches too. It's funny how Josh became way hotter than Drake midway through Drake and Josh. Drake was never that hot, he just had that pop punk twink look that was big at the time. Josh grew to be traditionally very handsome and the show could not pretend to still have him be the fat awkward guy and wrote in a few girlfriend plots for him.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 80September 26, 2020 11:07 PM

The kids from Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide also grew up to be well-adjusted. As did Big Time Rush. Those were few of the only shows from 2000s Nickelodeon that weren't Dan Schneider productions. Ryan Potter who is in Titans was in also in a Nick show called Supah Ninjas and he seems well. So it's really the Schneider shows that have the fucked up stuff.

by Anonymousreply 81September 26, 2020 11:10 PM

I agree Nickelodeon as a channel had far better quality programming in both animation and live-action. Most agree Nick went downhill by the late 90s but even then it was still pretty good until the late 2000s. Disney Channel in my opinion went downhill after High School Musical and Hannah Montana when they kicked off a lot of their animation and made all their shows single-camera sitcoms about aspiring pop stars combined with even piss-poor acting, played out stereotypes, extremely unfunny jokes and the obnoxious fake laugh track. Basically killing any appeal to anyone above the age of 12.

by Anonymousreply 82September 26, 2020 11:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 83September 26, 2020 11:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 85September 26, 2020 11:25 PM

I used to love many of Disney Channel’s cartoons growing up. Kim Possible, Proud Family, The Little Mermaid series, Lilo & Stitch series, Recess, Emperor’s New School, American Dragon. But I really couldn’t get into the newer cartoons.

by Anonymousreply 87September 26, 2020 11:29 PM

Josh should wait for Drake to give his side of the story and wait for this to go to court before making assumptions. Otherwise, it is just accusations. But I doubt Drake and Josh are really friends anymore. People age and drift apart. Childhood friendships don't always last forever. Being a kid actor in Hollywood and befriending another kid actor is no different than making friends in elementary school.

by Anonymousreply 88September 26, 2020 11:29 PM

20 year old dating a 16 year old is not what I would call predatory or pedophilia. It's inappropriate by our modern standards though.

by Anonymousreply 90September 26, 2020 11:32 PM

R88 being close working creative partners with a degree of success and fame from the age of 12 to 21 is a lot different from being friends in elementary school. D&J weren’t just kid actors who did one project; they literally became men together, and had a show with both their names on the marquee. It’s more like an Astaire/Rogers or Aykroyd/Belushi type of relationship.

by Anonymousreply 91September 26, 2020 11:33 PM

[quote] 20 year old dating a 16 year old is not what I would call predatory or pedophilia.

Sounds wonderful considering I was 14 and he was 26. AND being of royal blood and the richest female in the land at the time, I also had to turn my entire wealth over to him. Girls have it so fucking easy today.

by Anonymousreply 92September 26, 2020 11:37 PM

On this YouTube collaboration video Drake did on Josh’s channel last year, half of all the thousands of comments read something like ‘so was anyone going to tell me Drake & Josh were gay or did I just have to find out for myself?’ A lot of people have been questioning their honesty when it comes to sexual orientation, since the whole wedding drama they had. Makes me wonder if these recent allegations are some sort of similar manufactured stunt to suggest a rampant heterosexuality where there is none. Not sure whether it’s more disgusting as truth or as a lie.

by Anonymousreply 100September 27, 2020 1:11 AM

Josh Peck seems to want to distance himself from Drake and Josh and I wonder if it’s because he has bad memories regarding his size. He doesn’t seem happy being in the David Dobrik/VlogSquad universe so I hope he finds some success. Drake makes me sad because there was so much promise there.

by Anonymousreply 101September 27, 2020 1:12 AM

Would anyone be truly happy to be thrown in with the Vlog Squad? Those people seem awful narcissists and superficial talentless creeps to the last. Drake is more palatable company by comparison, and as we have learned that is a hell of a sliding curve.

The only advantage of spending time collaborating with Dobrik et al. is making a shitload of money, which Josh has done. From a credibility and creativity standpoint, it’s a horrible choice.

As for Drake, his music is...ok, sometimes. He can put together a solid classic pop record, but he doesn’t exactly shake the tree or break the ground. Happily grant that he’s a fine comedic actor albeit a little old-fashioned in that respect, but I don’t think his acting abilities extend as far as that of Peck or Bynes. His charm is limited, and only still appealing to Latina teen girls.

by Anonymousreply 102September 27, 2020 1:24 AM

A friend of mine went to a Mitchell Musso concert in middle school (this was 2008 or 2009) and got to meet him/get a signed picture and said he was very nice. I thought it was kind of shitty that Disney let him go over a DUI considering he’d been with the network for a while

by Anonymousreply 105September 27, 2020 1:50 AM

The thing about Josh I feel is this. He was on Dan Schneider productions and Schneider being a disgusting self-hating fat nerd filled his jokes with jokes about ugly, fat and nerdy people dished out by pretty populars. Look at All That, Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly and Victorious, tons of bullying towards the nerdy and unattractive cast members written into the script. I imagine Josh felt hurt at times about the humor being thrown at his looks and weight just like I imagine the same for Lori Beth Denberg on All That who was a walking fat joke. Josh is like Jerry O'Connell was fat, awkward and a punching bag for jokes as a kid then blossomed into a tall, well-built handsome man. I imagine both have in their a sense of smug satisfaction that they peaked much later but still bitter about their childhoods.

R105 Disney is the most hypocritical company in existence. They get mad when their teen stars act like... well you know... teenagers. Mitchell Musso getting a DUI and Miley Cyrus making that "Can't Be Tamed" video. What teenager in existence doesn't do stupid things or rebel?

by Anonymousreply 107September 27, 2020 1:55 AM

I thought Joe Jonas was the gay one. But I guess because he was considered the hottest one before Nick grew up. That's why people said that. I always thought the Jonas Brothers were Latino and was happy that Disney got more diverse then I learned they are just white guys who look dark.

by Anonymousreply 110September 27, 2020 2:02 AM

90s shows geared toward younger audiences centered more on families. During the 2000s, the parents disappeared or became stupider than the kids. Kind of revealing when you think of it.

[quote] I learned they are just white guys who look dark.

Doesn’t the fact that they’re dark make them non white?

by Anonymousreply 112September 27, 2020 2:05 AM

R109 They are only a 1/4 Italian on their mother's side. Jonas can be an English, Scottish, German, Greek or Ashkenazi Jewish last name which is ambiguous. Their dad is from the South and could also have black blood, maybe Native American but also many Jews in the US converted to Christianity and hid their ancestry. They're mutts like most of white Americans.

Joe definitely cannot pass for white. He's darker than his brothers and he doesn't even look Sicilian or Irish.

by Anonymousreply 114September 27, 2020 2:11 AM

R111 Saved By The Bell was the originator of the tweencom. It was focused on the high schoolers rather than the family. Boy Meets World also, only first season focused on their family then it became mostly about Corey, Shawn, Eric and Topanga's antics. Clarissa and Blossom also focused on teen girl issues. Family Matters and Step by Step shifted from the family and focused on the teen and young adult cast. Lizzie, Even Stevens and Raven focused on the tweens but still family-oriented but then Hannah Montana came and it became about the high school pop star antics.

R111 Ugh, yes. Disney and Nick loved nothing more than incompetent loopy parents or a dead mom. I haven’t watched anything after 2011 so not sure if it’s the same now

by Anonymousreply 122September 27, 2020 2:25 AM

R117 They're from the same sect of Christianity as Kings of Leon too. Jonas's father is from North Carolina. The Appalachian region is fascinating because poor white farmers, black freedmen, Jewish farmers, Middle Eastern immigrants and small surviving tribes of Native Americans all mingled and interbred together for centuries. The Lumbee tribe and Melungeons are two tri-racial groups that survived today. The Jonas Brothers are good-looking young men who seem very ignorant of their ancestry. I really don't believe they even see themselves as white guys.

by Anonymousreply 123September 27, 2020 2:25 AM

The Jonas Brothers are like Hanson with Christianity. The Hanson brothers admited they had premarital sex, drank, smoked pot and partied. The Jonas Brothers admitted the same thing and they felt uncomfortable wearing purity rings but they did to acquiesce their minister father. Their parents should have known that teenage boys who tour all over and have tons of girls throwing themselves at them will not be pure lol.

by Anonymousreply 124September 27, 2020 2:31 AM

Disney knew what they were doing with The Jonas Brothers. They wanted to create a 21st Century equivalent to The Osmonds. Wholesome but attractive teenage boys with suggestive but very bland lyrics to sell to suburban girls. They already struck gold with Hilary Duff, Jesse McCartney and Hannah Montana. The purity ring thing was their parents idea to keep the boys virginal during touring. But I'm sure the JoeBros got their dicks sucked dry.

If Kevin is gay, he should come out and become a media personality who profits off of pop culture nostalgia like Lance Bass and Jonathan Bennett. The Jonas Brothers are in general very lucky they have a devoted fanbase despite their very limited talent.

by Anonymousreply 127September 27, 2020 2:51 AM

R127 that would actually be a good move. I wish Kevin would find the courage and make a move, if that is indeed his truth. He could really find some peace and do something good with his life, that way. He owes it to himself more than anyone else. And he won’t be alone; in fact he’ll find he has a lot more support than he thought from some unexpected quarters.

Christians & Corporations can’t keep getting away with their campaign of erasure.

Joe Jonas's group DNCE has only one album and it's better than all of Jonas Brother's discography.

Nick only had one good album and that was that blues rock album he did with a band called Nick Jonas & The Administration. For some reason, Nick regressed and went to making boring pop music despite getting praise for that blues album. Nick could have been a Jonny Lang or Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

R115 Those shows were very different though. Most of those shows dealt with ordinary kids dealing with the rituals of growing up and were much more relatable. When they are about extraordinary kids like Alex Mack, it was about her struggle to be ordinary or fit in. It's true that there was a sea change happening in the late nineties and some of those shows had their share of wacky plots, but overall they felt more grounded in reality.

The Disney stuff was cartoony slapstick that dealt with kids chasing fame and fortune and using social media.

by Anonymousreply 134September 27, 2020 4:46 AM

R134 The Disney stuff before Hannah Montana was exactly like you described. Lizzie McGuire, Even Stevens, The Famous Jett Jackson, The Jersey, Flash Forward, Phil of the Future, The Suite Life and So Weird were exactly that.

by Anonymousreply 135September 27, 2020 4:47 AM

R134 I doubt Saved By The Bell was relatable. It was set in a rich Southern California high school with every dressed fashionable. It was cartoony slapstick too and all the problems were easily solved in each episode. Most people liked it because it was wish fulfillment and the campy goofy factor made it so bad it was good.

by Anonymousreply 136September 27, 2020 4:53 AM

Hannah Montana had the best guest stars: Vicki Lawrence as Miley’s Mamaw Ruthie, Dolly Parton as Miley’s Aunt Dolly, Brooke Shields as Miley’s dead mother, Jon Cryer and Heather Locklear as Lilly’s parents... they even had Larry David, Ray Romano, and Rob Reiner as guest stars!

R146: That's being extremely generous. I watched plenty of sitcoms when I was a kid but even then I found SBTB pretty weak sauce. It didn't help that [italic]The Simpsons[/italic] premiered around the same time and managed to be a more believable depiction of children than any TV show I had seen up to that point and certainly compared to what TGIF considered comedy.

by Anonymousreply 142September 27, 2020 5:41 AM

R136 I think Saved by the Bell found popularity through syndication and sort have became a meme. It's "so bad it's good" in writing and people are fascinated by how something so corny, bright and flashy that era of fashion was. It certainly helps the cast (except for Screech) were all pretty hot and it had tons of shirtless and bikini scenes. Same reason Beverly Hills 90210 and Power Rangers have a cult following among 90s pop culture fans.

I feel The Simpsons, Roseanne and Married with Children all pretty much did better representations of the American family than any other network sitcom. It depicted kids and teens as the little destructive ungrateful monsters they are and how parents are still people who have to struggle with their own problems along with supporting a family.

by Anonymousreply 145September 27, 2020 5:57 AM

I think most kid and teen-oriented shows are considered trash by people who are outside of the demographic. It's really hard to say this era of teen shows is better than this era of teen shows. Of course we are biased to what we watched when we were young because we were impressionable and conditioned to like certain things no matter what we try to convince ourselves. The Brady Bunch and Partridge Family were mocked in their days as fake and stupid. Same with the TNBC and TGIF lineup. Same with Nickelodeon and Disney today. People who grew up in the 90s may prefer 90210 or Dawson's Creek to someone who grew up in the 2000s with One Tree Hill and The OC and then the 2010s stuff like Riverdale and Vampire Diaries.

Oh c'mon! You can't be serious. They were as manufactured and fake as fuck and most people watch them to laugh at the terrible writing. They came out in the same period as MASH, All in the Family, Sanford & Son and The Jeffersons too which are the actual classics.

Norman Lear's primary contribution to TV history is Very Special Episodes.

by Anonymousreply 150September 27, 2020 6:02 AM

[quote]They were as manufactured and fake as fuck and most people watch them to laugh at the terrible writing.

The acting was better than the writing, but in SBTB the writing and the acting are both unwatchably bad.

by Anonymousreply 151September 27, 2020 6:05 AM

R151

The Brady Bunch's acting was not that good. It just seems more nuanced because it filmed in a single-camera setup with the laugh track added on later. The horrible script could not be fixed with any level of good acting. The Partridge Family had better writing though and more adult humor that made it watchable in my opinion.

But at the end of the day, we will always be biased to what we grew up watching. We are easily conditioned and programmed at a young age and we feel nostalgia for those days of childhood simplicity.

by Anonymousreply 152September 27, 2020 6:08 AM

[quote]They came out in the same period as MASH, All in the Family, Sanford & Son and The Jeffersons too which are the actual classics.

Alan Alda ruined the later episodes by turning them into diatribes about whatever was pissing him off. And Lear's company ended up making shows aimed at children. They were the ones who discovered Gary Coleman.

In real life, those spoiled brats would be shoving Samuel Powers (I refuse to use his voice-shaming nickname) in the locker every damn day.

by Anonymousreply 155September 27, 2020 6:16 AM

Every single show mentioned in this thread is ten times better than the reality crap that took hold in the early 2000s which isn't as bad as the current trend of teens growing up on social media while thinking its a reflection of reality.

by Anonymousreply 156September 27, 2020 6:17 AM

Most tween/teen shows are designed to be not relatable. They are designed to be aspirational or moralistic. The cast is mostly pretty and fashionable middle-class to upper-class characters who live in a nice area and there may be a token minority character or a token "poor" character though to give a lecture once in a while on racism or classism. They are set up to be wish fulfillment as in the younger audiences looks up to these characters and idolizes them. Hence the "very special episode" formula to make sure they are good role models. It's very much a market-driven process.

Some I did find more relatable was Malcolm in the Middle, Everybody Hates Chris and Moesha but those were written for a wider demographic than just teenagers.

by Anonymousreply 157September 27, 2020 6:19 AM

[italic]Malcolm in the Middle[/italic] was extremely overrated, especially considering it displaced [italic]Futurama[/italic], which was brilliant, on Sunday nights.

by Anonymousreply 158September 27, 2020 6:21 AM

R155 Screech made no sense in the show to me. I know every show has a punching bag character but he was unfunny and boring. Urkel in Family Matters was at least entertaining to watch and had cool gimmicks. Screech was just annoying and creepy especially towards Lisa. The main cast clearly didn't like him and he just tagged along anyway. He had a screechy voice because Dustin Diamond was like 12 years old when the show began and was still going through puberty.

by Anonymousreply 159September 27, 2020 6:22 AM

R159 Ironic that Dustin never changed his shtick because his character changed the most by far. He was portrayed as a smart nerd in the beginning and by the end was mentally challenged.

by Anonymousreply 160September 27, 2020 6:25 AM

The producers of that show were religious fundamentalists, R159. And they ruined a perfectly good Pointer Sisters song. At least with a Norman Lear show, the profits don't go to people who will deprive me of my civil rights as a gay man.

He was the prototype of Ross from [italic]Friends[/italic], the single worst TV show ever. But SBTB lowered the bar for NBC sitcoms after they had tried so hard to raise them.

by Anonymousreply 162September 27, 2020 6:27 AM

R160 They should have kept Screech's girlfriend Violet as she gave him some character development. His obsession with Lisa was so annoying. I know Tori Spelling was busy with 90210 but they could have recasted the role.

Lisa also didn't get the most development either, she never had a steady relationship. The one episode with her and Zack hooking up could have been a long story arc and they had good chemistry too (since Mark-Paul and Lark dated during the show's run).

R161

Funny if they are fundamentalists. They had no problems with sexualizing the teen cast. Having Mark-Paul, Mario and other guys-of-the-week strut around shirtless showing off their muscles or having Tiffani, Lark and Jessie wear skin-tight outfits or short skirts, bikinis and midriffs.

by Anonymousreply 163September 27, 2020 6:31 AM

Dawson should have been gay with a crush on Pacey. His obsession with Joey had to do with denial of his sexuality and the jealousy of losing his best girl friend to his other best friend who he was in love with. Dawson would have to learn to accept he is gay and that Pacey is straight. Then he finds Jack who is also gay and they fall in love. Of course, it would have killed the ratings and got the show cancelled due to the fact Dawson was sold as a teen idol for girls to crush on. But I would have respected Kevin Williamson more.

Erik von D was sinfully gorgeous and adorable in everything, really. His character in ABC’s terrible TV adaptation of DINOTOPIA was a major crush of mine.

Changed my life when I discovered Erik also voiced Sid Philips in TOY STORY...

R197 agree that Dawson seemed more like a late-blooming young gay man at times than totally straight. His infatution with Joey skewed so chaste and so childlike that it did seem more like he wanted her to be his life-Hag rather than his life-partner. When they had sex it was so damn uncomfortable, and not just in the sense of “oh no we’re childhood friends”. And Jen? Please. There’s a reason Dawson couldn’t handle her, and it wasn’t only because he was a colossal nerd and a Mama’s boy. Then there was Dawson’s strangely angsty and intense fixation on his few male friends, and his dad, and Spielberg. He should have crushed on and dated Pacey’s older cop brother instead of Jack (in that terrible rushed plot line in the last season).

However, I must protest that Pacey belongs with Andie, forever a hundred years. None of this nonsense with Joey, or Dawson, or whatever that character Busy Philips played was called. Pacey’s endgame love interest should have been Andie, and she should have stayed in the show. Their season two arc was near-perfect teen romance drama, and majorly influenced my view on love during my formative years.

R201 Wasn't Dawson based on Kevin Williamson? If so it makes sense Dawson would come across as gay.

by Anonymousreply 205September 28, 2020 2:49 PM

R205 yeah, it makes more sense when you know the background.

Gay boys who aren’t out to themselves can and often do idealise beautiful female friends, like Dawson did to Joey.

by Anonymousreply 206September 28, 2020 4:02 PM

R206 Kevin said as much and he was still very much in the closet when Dawson's Creek was on.

[quote] There's just no way they would have done that with the lead character. Although any storyline that takes the focus off Joey would be a good thing.

They already screwed with Dawson's character to the point where he became less important by the end. I stopped watching the show when it became more like a soap opera.

by Anonymousreply 207September 28, 2020 5:25 PM

Some self loathers believe that the true love of a woman cures them of their homosexual urges. That's why they put at least one woman on a pedestal as their savior. And that was also the basic premise of gay conversion therapy (you just didn't find the right woman yet).

by Anonymousreply 208September 28, 2020 5:33 PM

Dawson's Creek, Gilmore Girls and 7th Heaven all turned from "semi"-realistic shows into soap operas over the course of their runs.

by Anonymousreply 209September 28, 2020 5:42 PM

It's not that uncommon to pander to the fans that keep the ratings high.

by Anonymousreply 210September 28, 2020 5:45 PM

The WB and CW are both very small fan-driven networks. They pull in much smaller ratings than CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox. WB/CW survived heavily due to pandering to teens (e.g. 7th Heaven, Dawson, OTH, Gossip Girl), genre and niche fans (e.g. Supernatural, Smallville, Arrow, Flash) and both were very social media heavy. The WB and UPN were also the place for black sitcoms (Parent Hood, Wayan Bros, Jamie Foxx, Moesha, The Parkers, One on One). The WB had an interactive website with downloads, blogs, email and fan forums in fact in the late 90s and early 2000s. So what kept the WB/CW alive was pandering to teens and fandoms.

Fox was similar in pandering to youth (90210, 21 Jump Street, Melrose) and also had many black shows (In Living Color, Martin, Living Single) until they finally crossed over into the mainstream with acquiring major sports broadcasts and shows like The X-Files (got critical acclaim), Married with Children (after the 1989 boycott attempt made it big) and The Simpsons (ratings picked up heavily around 1991) bringing in an older demographic.

by Anonymousreply 211September 28, 2020 6:04 PM

Yes, part of it was fan reaction. The majority preferred Pacey to Dawson. I always preferred Dawson. Part of it was also Van Der Beek's fault. He was eager to break away from his most well known character in movies like Rules of Attraction while the show was still popular and getting peak ratings. He also filmed a sex scene for a Todd Solondz film which never saw the light of day. So either he was trying to capitalize on playing more edgy characters, but it looks like audiences never bought into it and it may have even cost him his teen fanbase.

by Anonymousreply 212September 28, 2020 6:12 PM

James Van Der Beek is the male Jessica Biel. Both thought they were too good for the shows that made them famous. Yet refused to look inward and realize that their acting chops were not that great and they lacked charisma to be Hollywood leading actors. Both were in Rules of Attraction.

by Anonymousreply 213September 28, 2020 6:20 PM

Packet was definitely hotter than Dawson to me, but I was always aware that he was “the sidekick”. I was just never fully invested in him. And Joey’s initial longing for Dawson was by far the storyline that I was most involved with. Joey’s sad rendition of “On My Own” was the first time I ever heard it. So many memories.

Also does anyone remember Popular or Everwood with the lovely Gregory Smith? Haha The WB used to be a mess, and I ate it up.

Not the thread topic, but I’m not even mad at it. Dawson’s was bomb.

by Anonymousreply 217September 28, 2020 8:11 PM

Kevin Williamson left Dawson's Creek as showrunner pretty early on. Pacey who started out as the sidekick became more of a focus and the show became known more for its frequent cast changes.

by Anonymousreply 218September 28, 2020 8:38 PM

Van Der Beek is now best known for that crying meme from the finale. Kind of a sad progression when you think about it and emblematic of what the show would become.

by Anonymousreply 219September 28, 2020 8:39 PM

R217 I'm guessing a lot of the people helping keep this thread alive voted for Brad Renfro. It's the same generation who graduated to the WB while younger millennials were just getting into Disney.

by Anonymousreply 220September 28, 2020 8:41 PM

R220 It's weird because The WB targeted actual teenagers and young adults. Disney Channel targeted older grade schoolers and middle-schoolers. Disney was a premium cable network in the 90s and most didn't people even have that channel until the later 90s or for some it didn't become available until the early 2000s. The WB was a broadcast network, so most people had it. Brad was a bizarre choice as he was only in one Disney movie Tom & Huck and most of his filmography was adult-oriented films. He was a teen idol but had a rugged "bad boy" image.

by Anonymousreply 221September 28, 2020 8:58 PM

R217 The WB shows while a bit corny and poorly-written in hindsight are still classics of the teen/YA genre and fondly remembered and generate more discussion. The guys on those shows were older, looked like men and thus hotter to us. The WB was a core Millennial network. Millennials were born between 1981 to 1997. Most of these late 2000s Disney stuff is just seen as overtly factory-manufactured, annoying and obnoxious in comparison. People do have fonder memories of early-mid 2000s Disney like Jett Jackson, Raven, Even Stevens, Phil of the Future, Suite Life, So Weird and Lizzie McGuire.

by Anonymousreply 222September 28, 2020 9:08 PM

R222 Right, the people who grew up on TGIF and the WB are millennials that have little in common with their gen x although there may be some overlap with 90210 and Saved by the Bell. Melrose Place was for adults but I'm sure there were teens with more mature tastes.

by Anonymousreply 223September 28, 2020 9:15 PM

R223 Melrose Place was softcore porn for the time just like Baywatch. You had hunks and babes for days on it. So horny teens ate it up too. Jake from Melrose appeared on 90210 for an arc and even had a fling with Kelly.

James Van Der Beek is sort of a cult icon now for his role in Kevin Smith movies, Varsity Blues, Rules of Attraction, Power/Rangers, the Funny of Die skits he did and Don't Trust the B*** in Apartment 23. He at least branched out to appeal to straight guys rather than the predominately teen girl fanbase that was for Dawson's Creek (though many guys also watched it).

by Anonymousreply 232September 28, 2020 11:01 PM

Josh Jackson is one of those rare former heartthrob C-list actors who have never had even the suggestion of a gay rumour.

Is that because he was never popping, because gay men don’t find him in the least. bit attractive, or because he just doesn’t have a single homosexual tendril? (I feel like Pacey talking like this lmao)

by Anonymousreply 237September 29, 2020 12:20 AM

R233 A lot of gay guys found him attractive. It's just that Van Der Beek seemed a million times more gay than Joshua and Kerr (who was supposed to be the gay guy). Most would agree that Kerr was the best looking and Joshua the second.

Not sure conventional models of sexuality can be applied to someone as traumatised as Aaron Carter. It’s no wonder he doesn’t know which way to swing; he probably barely knows what day of the week it is.

Since we’re talking about gay-interest former-twink Disney actors/singers with problems, J.C. Chasez has been dark for so long. How’s he holding up? Is he in a happy stable relationship? Is he Out to friends and family? Looking back, his character on ‘Emerald Cove’ seemed sort of gay. R233 a turn of the century teen here, and I don't ever remember any gay rumors about Joshua Jackson, but he does play the out femme queen sleeping with the closeted football quarterback in Cruel Intentions. I believe it's insinuated Jackson's character is *gasp* the top.

Growing up, I always found him cute but never hot in a conventional sense (even in Mighty Ducks, there's another hockey kid who's the real pretty boy), but do think he's aged rather nicely. He recently played Reese Witherspoon's husband in Little Fires Everywhere and has a scene in his dad bod tighty whities.

(And Dawson's Creek shoulda gone the Design for Living route and just got the three leads in bed together. Also, Team Jen)

by Anonymousreply 250September 29, 2020 7:07 PM

Katie was in The Kennedys miniseries playing Jackie. She did okay. Her accent was very iffy though. Michelle has done incredibly well and has a real Hollywood career. Joshua seems to be doing well with TV. Fringe gave his career a real revival. JVDB still works steadily which he has not choice to since he has so many kids to feed now.

by Anonymousreply 251September 29, 2020 10:04 PM

R248 good point. I forgot about the fact that Josh Jackson technically counts as a former Disney twink for his lead role in THE MIGHTY DUCKS.

In all three of those movies his character Charlie was in love with the prettyboy cakeeater Banksy, and no-one will ever convince me different. Charlie had a crunchy-granola activist girlfriend in the third movie but it seemed so forced. Also I think he had a Daddy-kink thing for Coach Bombay (check out the scene where Charlie breaks down and cries at Hans’ funeral in Part 3, then tell me he doesn’t want Bombay to fuck him).

Plus there was so totally something gay and beautiful going on between those two goon characters played by teen Aaron Lohr (Newsies!) and Elden Henson...

Thomas Dekker played the son in Honey I Shrunk The Kids: The Series that aired on Disney Channel. He is openly gay and married to man now. I thought he was really hot in Sarah Connor Chronicles and Kaboom. He played gay so many times that it's not surprising and he was effeminate as a child actor.

I still wish Thomas had stuck around for Heroes, even though it went downhill pretty quickly.

by Anonymousreply 272October 2, 2020 4:06 AM

I believe it was on Heroes where he threw a temper tantrum when he was told his character would be gay. Later he clarified that his temper tantrum was about not being told this earlier, so he could play the character accordingly from the start.

by Anonymousreply 273October 2, 2020 4:16 AM

In Thomas's defense. He had a shitty childhood and was struggling with his sexuality and felt pressured to keep up this image of heterosexuality. As a kid he didn't care since he played a gay child in Grosse Pointe and he played a bisexual in Kaboom. He said he was molested as a child and I bet he probably had stage parents too. He always looks depressed or angry in most pictures. But he is out now and he seems happy to have found his life partner
