Famous People Who are Animal Lovers

I’m reading a biography on Mark Twain and a fact that jumps out is how crazy he was about cats. To say that he was an OG Cat Lady wouldn’t be overstating it. I knew he loved cats but not to the extent that the details reveal. I guess there’s something about writers and their pets, particularly cats as Hemingway and T.S. Elliot comes to mind.

What other famous people are known for their love of animals beyond just owning pets? I guess owning a lot of pets or being devoted to them can count too.

Tom Hardy loves dogs. He would bring his to drama school, and always to sets. When his dog that he adopted with Jessica Chastain on the set of "Lawless" died a few years ago, he wrote this long eulogy and posted a nine-minute tribute video to him.

Hardy's thoughts on dogs to Vanity Fair: “They’re just so clean and straightforward, and they wear their heart on their chest,” said Hardy. “You know what you’re getting with a dog. I love that. Unfettered companionship and loyalty in the most boring of manners.”

“The life and the soul is right next to you, keeping the heart ticking over in the room. You know when a dog’s around, there’s good times. . . It’s like, why would it choose to be around us? What the hell does it see in us? We don’t deserve them! What does it see in us that it’s so like, ‘Well, I wanna be with you, you’re awesome?’ I’m not that awesome. You’re awesome.”

Linda Blair always loved animals and currently runs her own animal rescue.

by Anonymousreply 78September 23, 2020 2:34 PM

R77, how many dogs do Rourke and Rockwell have? Sandy Dennis had 37 cats and admitted she only worked so she could pay for their vet bills. But thanks for playing.

by Anonymousreply 79September 23, 2020 4:48 PM

R77 “playing?” It’s a silly, arbitrary label. John Lennon had one or two cats and I’ve recently seen him referred to as a “crazy cat lady.” I’m curious as to why a love of cats is equated to insanity. There’s not much difference between dogs and cats.

Good for Sady Dennis. Caring for other creatures is as good a reason as any for motivation.

by Anonymousreply 80September 23, 2020 4:57 PM

R80 it’s true even someone with one or two cats gets that label.

But 37 is a tad ridiculous (she was a total weirdo anyway).

by Anonymousreply 81September 23, 2020 6:05 PM

It’s thought that the cliche of the ‘crazy cat lady’ might have some basis in fact - toxoplasmosis can change behavior, and infection with toxo is positively correlated with schizophrenia.

by Anonymousreply 87September 23, 2020 8:01 PM

Sandy Dennis had 37 cats. So fucking what?

She’ll be called a crazy cat lady for hoarding cats.

The .1% hoard money. More than they could ever need even to live in luxury. That hurts the rest of us.

And SD was working to pay her cats’ vet bills. She was a responsible cat lady.
