The Gays and Tennis Part 59: USO part III a slam with no BIG 3 in the QF

last thread just paywalled though we got closer to 600 replies than usual given the crazy Djokovic incident yesterday. The tennis world is still shaken from it!

We will finally have a new men's slam champ, the first since Cilic at the 2014 USO

We will also finally have a men's slam winner who was born in the 1990s. Cilic is currently the youngest slam champ at age 32!! That's never happened before.

Left in the draw, only Thiem (3 time finalist) and Medvedev, last year's USO runnerup, have reached a slam final. Most of the others haven't been to a SF.

On the women's side, we still have slam champs Serena, Osaka, Azarenka and Kenin left in the draw. A bunch of unexpected players are still in contention.

Who will go all the way?

and btw, clay events in Austria and Turkey are getting underway this week for those who skipped the USO trip

by Anonymousreply 489September 16, 2020 4:42 PM

Berrettini is probably superstitious but I wish he'd shave. The hair growth covers his gorgeous face

by Anonymousreply 1September 7, 2020 11:51 PM

schedule is out for tomorrow

even though Zverev vs. Coric is the more on-paper match to watch, officials put PCB vs. Shapovalov in prime time. I think that's fair though given PCB was robbed of getting a proper win in the last round

by Anonymousreply 15September 8, 2020 3:37 AM

16 years after the WTA Russian revolution, are we headed that way in the ATP?

4 of the 8 quarterfinalists are Russian or of Russian descent (Medvedev, Rublev, Zverev and Shapovalov). They both flopped in rd3 but Khachanov and half Russian Tsitsipas are in the mix at most big tournaments these days too

by Anonymousreply 16September 8, 2020 3:39 AM

That Tiafoe is just terrible.

by Anonymousreply 17September 8, 2020 3:40 AM

FAA and Tiafoe had a good USO overall but both really were awful today after the opening sets. They were unable to sustain consistency or intensity. They both have lots of time to work on that but their level today was quite disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 18September 8, 2020 3:43 AM

Daniil team overall. And really want PCB to beat stupid Shapo as well.

by Anonymousreply 19September 8, 2020 3:45 AM

I've had a crush on PCB since I was a kid ... though I think I really didn't see him in profile that much. Then again, I don't mind a beak of a nose, either.

by Anonymousreply 20September 8, 2020 3:53 AM

I'd be surprised if PCB, Coric, de Minaur or Rublev wins the title. The first three don't have huge games and are more steady players with great movement. Then you have Rublev who's a big hitter with no plan B and an OK, but not great mover.

It would be rather funny if neither Thiem or PCB wins the title, as that would mean "lost gen" is truly being passed by #NextGen. Medvedev, Rublev and Coric are 3 of the older #NextGen but they're not in the "lost gen".

"Lost gen" refers to players like Thiem, PCB, Nishikori, Dimitrov, Goffin, Raonic,

by Anonymousreply 21September 8, 2020 3:55 AM

R20 PCB has a huge nose but it works for him somehow. He is cute to me too

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty won't defend her French Open tennis title because of the pandemic

From CNN's Jill Martin

Ashleigh Barty will not be in Paris to defend her French Open tennis title.

The Australian said in a statement that she would not be traveling to Europe in part because of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as factoring in her lack of preparedness to play at Roland Garros.

"It has been a difficult decision to make but unfortunately I will not be competing in Europe this year," Barty said in a statement. "Last year's French Open was the most special tournament of my career so this is not a decision I have made lightly. "There are two reasons for my decision. The first is the health risks that still exist with Covid. The second is my preparation, which has not been ideal without my coach being able to train with me due to the state border closures in Australia."

2020 French Open tennis tournament to be played with fans

From CNN Sports’ Dan Kamal

Despite the rising numbers of coronavirus cases in France, the French Tennis Federation announced Monday the 2020 French Open will be open to fans when play begins later this month. The Grand Slam event was originally scheduled for May but was postponed by the pandemic.

Tournament officials say Roland-Garros, where the tournament is played, will be divided into three zones, with a maximum of 5,000 fans in each of two zones and a maximum of 1,500 in the third.

Seats in the stands will be allocated under strict tournament protocols, with a maximum of four spectators sitting in adjacent seats indoors. Spectators over the age of 11 will be required to wear face coverings. Qualifying rounds will be played behind closed doors between Sept. 21 and 25.

According to tournament director Guy Forget, all players will be tested upon arrival in Paris. They will be approved to play if they test negative when arriving and again 72 hours later. Players will also be tested every five days as long as they remain in contention and must stay in one of two hotels arranged by tournament organizers.

What the numbers look like: French officials have confirmed more than 367,000 cases and more than 30,000 deaths from Covid-19, the seventh-highest number of fatalities caused by coronavirus worldwide according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.

by Anonymousreply 24September 8, 2020 6:11 AM

so fans won't be tested. Sounds kinda dumb

by Anonymousreply 28September 8, 2020 3:48 PM

Am I alone in thinking that Domi has a very strange body? He's got birthing hips and that ass is just out of proportion.

by Anonymousreply 29September 8, 2020 3:49 PM

FAA and Tiafoe really shat the bed yesterday, which saddens me, as this Russian Revolution is going to happen now. A Shapo-Medvedev final looks entirely possible (though Thiem is certainly capable of crashing that party).

We ought not count out PCB, who was holding his own with Djokovic for a set, and will have totally not pressure against Shapo. Incidentally, I agree with whomever said PCB is kinda cute; the nose notwithstanding, he's adorable.

DL fave Coric is definitely a contender against Zverev, but we ought not remember how many times Coric looked out of it against Tsitsipas. Coric hung around, to his credit, but he benefitted from Stef collapsing. Zverev is also going to have all the pressure, so Coric needs to be mentally aware and strong if he's going to take him out.

It's entirely possible that today's four winners will be three Russians who play for Canada, Germany, and Kazakhstan, and an American who plays for Japan.

Anyone on Flopos team?

[QUOTE] World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty won't defend her French Open tennis title because of the pandemic

Who?

by Anonymousreply 32September 8, 2020 4:42 PM

I couldn't care less about players' nationalities/descents. Zverev and Medvedev just happen to be two of the biggest jerks on the ATP, though they've toned it down a lot lately. Shapo comes across like a big pup, but I don't get his love of Putin or bad rap.

It'd be great to see PCB or Coric or even de Minaur win it all.

by Anonymousreply 33September 8, 2020 4:44 PM

I've only seen highlights of Brady so far. I'm going to watch her match today. From the highlights and scores, she seems to be really in the zone. I'd like to see Zverev get to another Slam semi. I can't stand Rublev or Medvedev, so at least one will be out tomorrow since they're playing each other. I hope Thiem beats De Minaur and then beats whoever wins the Rublev-Medvedev match. I'd like to see Thiem take the title. He was so close in Australia. I think he just ran out of gas.

Osaka v. Rogers could be a fantastic match. Rogers v. Kvitova was one of the highest quality women's matches I've watched this USO. I'd like to see a similar quality match between these two. I'd like to see Shapo over PCB so that NextGen can continue to make their mark. I think tennis needs that.

I'd be surprised if Serena loses to Pironkova, but Serena is so up and down these days it wouldn't be a total shock if Pironkova pulled that one out. I've not seen Mertens play. Azarenka is pulling out matches, but her serve continues to be a liability. Not sure who wins that match-up.

I think that whoever gets through the top half of the women's draw, which will likely be Brady or Osaka, is probably the favorite. Serena freezes up in Slam finals these days. Yet Serena is so unpredictable I could see her taking the whole thing. We'll see.

Shapo better have a good day or he will suffer. Pablo is playing well, he was going to win the first set before Nole went crazy, and he is the type of player that can make Dennis mad, he is a wall and he is in good form.

Shapo has very good forehand and backhand, he is a hit machine, but he is not inteligent on court and he could pay for it against a solid player.

I think Zverev will defeat Coric (Tsitsipas must be mad, with Nole out he was the clearly favourite on that part of the draw, or even to win the whole thing, he defeated Thiem and Medveded in his last matches against them).

Thiem and Medvedev are the clear favourite on the other half of the draw. If Thiem plays well, De Miñaur is simply not strong enough to defeat him. Medvedev seems to be too solid to Rublev in the past. I was surprised he was able to defeat Berretini (i expected something like last years' match). For some reason in my tennis forum people think Rublev is very talented, i don't dislike the guy but i found his tennis very flat, he only has one game plan, hitting the ball hard with his forehand. I think that is enough to be top 10 (he has a very good forehand) but not for getting further than that

by Anonymousreply 37September 8, 2020 6:43 PM

yes, this is Thiem's open to lose.

by Anonymousreply 38September 8, 2020 6:50 PM

I know people thought that Nole has this in the bag, but Australia made crystal clear that Thiem can defeat him, and Dom was playing better than Nole (there's a reason why he was so anxious just on the first set of a match).

I read somewhere that Tiafoe gave Daniil the midlefinger in their match

by Anonymousreply 39September 8, 2020 6:53 PM

Anyone comment on the atrocious outfits that the ball kids and lines people are stuck wearing?

Sloppy and ill-fitting...looks like something you’d pick up at Kohl’s.

by Anonymousreply 40September 8, 2020 7:06 PM

And Coric is trashing Zverev, probably it won't last but i'm enjoying thus far

by Anonymousreply 41September 8, 2020 7:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 42September 8, 2020 7:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 43September 8, 2020 7:21 PM

Zverev is losing it mentally.

Hate the green and red outfit. The women's version is so ugly too with the white skirt.

by Anonymousreply 44September 8, 2020 7:41 PM

Ugh, Zverev playing like shit.

by Anonymousreply 45September 8, 2020 7:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 48September 8, 2020 8:12 PM

Why would anyone prefer arrogant, whiny, petulant, condescending, foul Zverev over Coric?

by Anonymousreply 49September 8, 2020 8:15 PM

I love insightful remarks from commentators, like "she's really determined to win today."

by Anonymousreply 50September 8, 2020 8:31 PM

R50 Oh i loved Andrés Gimeno when he was a commentator on tve, my favourite remark was his classic, that hit hurt her a lot, generally when Arantxa won a point against Steffi. Unfortunately, Steffi didn't seem that hurt and ended winning most of those matches

by Anonymousreply 51September 8, 2020 8:35 PM

Unfortunately Borna let Sascha back on the match and he is going to pay for it

by Anonymousreply 52September 8, 2020 8:42 PM

Zverev handed the first set to Coric, then Coric handed the second set tiebreak to Zverev. Not a well played match at all so far. This makes me more convinced that either Thiem or Medvedev will likely win this whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 53September 8, 2020 8:48 PM

Borna is practicing a lot of gamesmanship. How many times does one change clothes during a match, let alone in the middle of the set multiple times?

R61, it was full of tension and lengthy rallies. Zeverev kept freaking out, Coric kept leaving to change his clothes. I don't think that Zeverev, for all of his talent, will be able to keep it together to win the title.

by Anonymousreply 74September 9, 2020 2:31 AM

The Zverev vs. Coric match was 1 of the very worst slam QF I've ever seen. Were there some great points? sure because they're talented players but overall the quality was piss poor from both

Zverev started the match in abysmal fashion, similar to the way he played when he got destroyed by Raonic at the AO. It continued until 4-3 40-15 in the 2nd set on Coric's serve. Suddenly he began playing even worse than Zverev and completely gifted the momentum back. Oh no there's more. The tiebreak was scratchy stuff too. 3 of the last 4 points were Coric missing forecourt SITTERS, 2 on his forehand and 1 on his backhand. Truly unbelievable stuff.

Then the worst game of the match came with Zverev serving I think at 2-1 in the 3rd. I think every point in that game ended with an error and his double faults, handing the break back to Coric. Then in the third set tiebreak Coric shit the bed and got rightfully destroyed

The 4th set Zverev played a bit better but Coric's level had dropped further

Zverev was playing worse than Tsitsipas did the other day when he choked. The difference was Coric wasn't good enough today to take advantage and instead choked harder.

So far Shavapolov vs. PCB is better quality and the winner should beat Zverev if he does not significantly raise his level in the SF

by Anonymousreply 75September 9, 2020 2:38 AM

Some guy on LPSG said he had a female friend who fucked PCB and said he was HUGE. Delightful thought.

by Anonymousreply 76September 9, 2020 2:42 AM

That might just be verifiable judging by the 'protrusion' tonight in his shorts

by Anonymousreply 77September 9, 2020 2:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 78September 9, 2020 2:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 79September 9, 2020 2:59 AM

Was Shapo’s mom a witch in her old village? She always looks like she’s poised to pull a handful of bleached rodent bones out of her blouse pocket and read you your future from them like they’re a deck of tarot cards.

by Anonymousreply 80September 9, 2020 3:00 AM

He's gorgeous but seems chronically depressed.

by Anonymousreply 87September 9, 2020 6:19 AM

It's just Blake's somnolent tone, which I actually like. Much better than the other broadcasters.

James blake is ok. I don't like A. Stevenson. her hair pin was just sooooo bad.

by Anonymousreply 89September 9, 2020 6:36 AM

PCB vs. Shapovalov was so much better quality than Zverev vs. Coric

If PCB is not injured or tired on Friday I think Zverev is toast.

Osaka is in good form and won easier than I thought she would. Brady has had a good draw and only faced 1 decent opponent so far, Garcia. Osaka will be her real test.

R90 Weird to criticise Brady for having a 'good draw' because Osaka's was much easier. She has only played one opponent in the top 50 (Kontaveit, who she is 4-0 against and beat last week on this exact same court). This has been a VERY cushy slam draw. Even more so than Barty's RG draw, Wozniacki's AO draw, and even some of the Margaret Court draws.

Brady has just beaten 3 of the seeds in a row (Putin, Kerber, Garcia), which is slightly more impressive even if none of them screamed 'slam contender' this year. Still, I agree that both are playing awesome and whoever wins that SF will be the favourite in the final against Elise Mertens or one of the mommy brigade.

by Anonymousreply 92September 9, 2020 11:16 AM

Some of you are way too happy to overlook Shapo's many flaws (appearance-wise, personality-wise, and game-wise) just because he... has blond leg hair lol.

I'm glad PCB beat him today. He's nicer to look at, and now I won't have to hear "MOOOOOON!" (not even "c'mon" with the 'c') after every. single. point. I hope he can beat Zverev too.

John McEnroe not traveling to French Open after ‘bizarre’ US Open

The Post has learned because of the pandemic, the NBC crew of McEnroe, Mary Carillo and Dan Hicks won’t make the trip to Paris. Instead of heading to the City of Lights, McEnroe will work the matches remotely — likely from a studio in Stamford, Conn.

“From my understanding, with logistics and concern [about COVID-19], at this time no one is going,” McEnroe told The Post at Flushing Meadows.

The French Open announced Sunday it will host a limited amount of fans. The US Open decided to host none, making McEnroe’s job a little tougher as he calls the silent matches.

“I’m the lucky one,’’ McEnroe said. “I’m not the one out there. It’s a lot tougher for players than it is for me. I think there’s a similarity that commentators feed off energy. It’s something I’ve taken pride in over the last 28 years I’ve done this. I want to bring that energy to the commentator’s booth the same way hopefully I did on the tennis court. It’s a key thing for me. It’s something I’m doubly aware of because it’s so quiet.

“It’s completely bizarre and surreal, calling matches and walking around and nobody’s there. You can never have imagined not only tennis, but all sports would be doing this right now.’’

Not all is quiet. The changeovers at Ashe sounds like a 1970’s discotheque — something the Douglaston, Queens tennis legend disapproves of.

“It’s deafeningly loud when they play music on the changeover,’’ McEnroe said. “You’re like, ‘what is going on here?’ One second, it’s nothing. Next second, I feel I have to put earplugs in. I don’t know how the players are feeling about it. I love music but it’s like, ‘C’mon.’ Maybe I’m just getting old. Or maybe they’re afraid the players are going to fall asleep.”

On the other hand, McEnroe admits he’s pleasantly surprised at the level of tennis and fitness after a five-month layoff. The men’s circuit had just one US Open tuneup.

“I’m pretty impressed,’’ McEnroe said. “I thought it would be making an adjustment to best-of-five after one event. That’s tricky. Fortunately the heat hasn’t been as much a factor as it could be otherwise we would’ve seen guys dropping like flies. But the best players usually win no matter how much time off.”

The best men’s player, Novak Djokovic, has been disqualified for accidentally striking a female linesman with a ball. On air, McEnroe said it’s an incident in which the Serbian is “going to be the bad guy the rest of his career.’’

McEnroe is anxious to see who steps up and believes men’s tennis needs a new jolt.

“Young, fresh blood is important,’’ McEnroe said. “It’s opened the door for the youngsters to step up and seize the opportunity.’’

The only thing McEnroe likes about the fan-less Open is no traffic in or out. Otherwise…

“It’s sad,’’ McEnroe said. “It’s definitely weird. The alternative is not playing. Early on, I had mixed feelings given the catastrophe that’s taken place. But it wouldn’t have made sense not to play tennis with other sports going on, though it’s more difficult with players coming from all over the world.’’

“Having grown up in New York and being involved in some of my favorite matches I ever played here, there’s nothing like a great New York crowd to lift up the players and spirits. Let’s hope this won’t go on much longer.”

by Anonymousreply 99September 9, 2020 2:58 PM

CBS This Morning had a feature on the moms still in the tournament. My mom worked when I was a kid, but apparently it's now some remarkable achievement to have a kid AND a job!

by Anonymousreply 100September 9, 2020 3:04 PM

R100 It's not the same and you know it

by Anonymousreply 101September 9, 2020 3:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 102September 9, 2020 3:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 103September 9, 2020 3:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 105September 9, 2020 3:11 PM

Naomi for the win, I hope. She is upsetting the Repugs with the BLM masks. I love her. Remember that Serena is a Jehova's Witness and during the last election she was proud that her religion did not allow her to vote. Fuck that shit.

by Anonymousreply 106September 9, 2020 3:35 PM

[quote] Some of you are way too happy to overlook Shapo's many flaws (appearance-wise

What do you consider to be his flaws appearance wise? I don’t think he’s as good looking as DLets make him out to be. He looks like Janice from the Muppets.

by Anonymousreply 109September 9, 2020 3:57 PM

I think PCB is adorable.

by Anonymousreply 110September 9, 2020 4:30 PM

James Blake is approximately 40,000 times better than Brad Gilbert. He has a much more pleasant speaking voice, he doesn't talk as much, and he has better things to say. As a side note that doesn't affect his performance, he's also much better looking. He and the McEnroe brothers are definitely the best combination to listen to. Any time Chris Fowler, Chris Evert, or Brad Gilbert are included, it is painful.

by Anonymousreply 111September 9, 2020 4:31 PM

I would love to see PCB and RBA fuck each other. The spaniards are hot.

by Anonymousreply 112September 9, 2020 4:42 PM

Serena looks like she's going to lose. Down a set and a break to Pirinkova. Oh well, there's no way Serena was going to win this whole thing anyway. Osaka is on fire and I think she's the favorite.

by Anonymousreply 113September 9, 2020 6:09 PM

Rublev team or Medvedev team?

Minotaur team or Thiem team/Domicakes team?

by Anonymousreply 114September 9, 2020 6:20 PM

I prefer a Medvedev-Thiem semifinal.

I think Serena will win this match, but i doubt she'll win the title. Osaka has a game that is able to put Serena in trouble without too much effort, and she seems to be in better form (and i have serious doubt she can defeat Azarenka in case Vika is in the semis).

It's curious, a week ago seemed a really bad loss for Muguruza, but right now it's obvious Pironkova is in great form

by Anonymousreply 115September 9, 2020 6:22 PM

So disappointing that (reportedly) RBA and PCB are straight. They would be adorable together.

by Anonymousreply 116September 9, 2020 6:43 PM

Fuck you R111. Gilbert knows tennis and he's hilarious. Blake mumbles, and frankly is only there as an affirmative action hire (like Alexandra Stevenson). As for the McEnroe brothers, hot wind and nepotism are a bad combo. And leave Chrissie alone. When those idiots were debating last night who was the most influential person in tennis history, the usual choices - BJK, Ashe and Gibson came up. Chrissie only popularized tennis in the 70's to what it IS today. Practically every player plays with 2 hands. She may not have been the first to hit with 2 hands, but she popularized it before Connors or Borg we re well known.

by Anonymousreply 117September 9, 2020 6:47 PM

Sorry about your severe head injury, R117. Thoughts and prayers.

by Anonymousreply 118September 9, 2020 7:08 PM

R117 Would you like to have a lie down?

by Anonymousreply 119September 9, 2020 7:17 PM

I like James Blake, but he sounds like he's about to fall asleep. Stevenson is AWFUL in every way. Chrissie can be annoying but my favorite moment of hers was a tournament a few years ago, when loudmouthed know-nothing Fowler was arguing about something with her, and her response was "I don't know how many Grand Slams you won, but I won a couple..." Shut him right up.

serena is through...

by Anonymousreply 122September 9, 2020 8:17 PM

Serena ain't gonna win this. I like Pirinkova's game, the forehand slice is a very underrated stroke, I use it all the time and it keeps the ball very low, it kind of dies and throws the other person off..

Brad Gilbert is a clown and for that I like him. He keeps it entertaining. James Blake is pretty but kind of boring.

I'm team Medvedev all the way.

by Anonymousreply 123September 9, 2020 8:46 PM

It seems Rublev is ready to give a good fight unlike Felix or Frances

by Anonymousreply 124September 9, 2020 8:55 PM

Team Daniil. He's nice looking and talented. He can REALLY play. Team mouse boy tonight.

by Anonymousreply 125September 9, 2020 9:01 PM

And it's over, if he wasted that advantage on the first set i don't think he has nothing to do.

by Anonymousreply 126September 9, 2020 9:01 PM

fucking slut and rat from russia won first set. ugly as fuck and rude.

by Anonymousreply 127September 9, 2020 9:03 PM

R125 He can be dick to people, too. Like last year on UsOpen

by Anonymousreply 128September 9, 2020 9:04 PM

Ha, R125, anyone would seem nice looking standing next to Rublev. That guy's face could stop a clock, and here it stopped the scoreboard!

As for commentators, I do think Gilbert really knows his tennis. He was a great coach. But I get that he can grate on people's nerves. I've heard that's why he usually gets let go as a coach. Blake is fine if a bit bland. Stevenson is ok and her insights can be good. It's just her voice makes her sound like a huge ditz. I like Chris Evert and always have. She's a fine commentator. I like Renee Stubbs. She's pretty good. I can listen to Jason Goodall's accent all day, and he knows his stuff. I don't mind John McEnroe, but I can't stand Patrick. Fowler for sure needs to go, though. R120, I remember when Chrissie shut him down with that comment. Have you noticed that he has sucked up to her ever since?

by Anonymousreply 131September 9, 2020 9:39 PM

Even if you don't like Daniil, you have to admit that he is incredible at playing tennis. He has been incredible today. Silently covering the entire court and pounding return after return. Rublev hasn't been playing badly, it's just that Daniil is fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 132September 9, 2020 9:44 PM

They are both fucking ugly.

And how many necklaces does Rublev gotta wear? I wonder if he is superstitious.

by Anonymousreply 133September 9, 2020 10:25 PM

Daniil is far from ugly; he's cute and has a very expressive face and fine features instead of cromagnon. You can tell when he is smiling even when he is wearing his mask. It's nice to have someone with some personality.

by Anonymousreply 134September 9, 2020 10:31 PM

Rublev seems to be very Chrisitan/Orthodox. He blesses himself and does the cross sign after he wins.

Fowler is on board to make tennis relatable to the general non-tennis audience. His light-weight and insipid commentary resonates with the couch-potato viewers who just happen to stumble on to a match while channel surfing. They see Serena and think to themselves "ooohhhh, that's Serena Williams" and are proud of themselves for knowing both her name, and that she is "THE VERY BEST TENNIS PLAYER EVER!!!!!" They nod along to Chris' every insipid comment, thinking that they too have that kind of knowledge.

Unfortunately, he's there for a reason.

by Anonymousreply 191September 11, 2020 2:55 AM

[QUOTE] The US Open has been such as shit show.

I disagree R165. To have only one player test positive, fewer withdrawals/mid-match retirements than any grand slam in recent memory, and a plethora of high-quality, competitive matches under these circumstances is pretty remarkable. Of course, the Djokovic default was unfortunate (and I'm not a fan) and anything can happen in next three days, but I think this has been a big success.

by Anonymousreply 192September 11, 2020 2:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 212September 11, 2020 4:48 AM

Serena lost. She just left, didn't even put on her mask.

She's too fat!

The other player is also a mother and she got her shape back...

If Serena lost the baby weight and got fit again...she could be still winning...too bad fat fuck!

by Anonymousreply 213September 11, 2020 4:49 AM

Um Serena, its time for a new coach, m'kay?

by Anonymousreply 214September 11, 2020 4:53 AM

God what a bummer. I really thought Serena could pull this one out and potentially get #24. If she could smack the ball against Osaka the way she did in the first set against Vika, she would’ve won the whole burrito. Now Osaka is gonna roll over Vika. I guess it’s fine, Serena’s nearly 40. It’s probably time for a new indefatigable contender. In ten years we’ll probably be debating whether Naomi or Serena is the GOAT. Maybe Ash Barty will intervene and we’ll have on the ladies side what we’ve had on the men’s side for the last decade.

by Anonymousreply 215September 11, 2020 4:59 AM

Osaka is in good form and fit. No way Serena and her fat ass can beat Osaka.

by Anonymousreply 216September 11, 2020 5:05 AM

r216, Serena's fat ass didn't even beat Vika

by Anonymousreply 217September 11, 2020 5:10 AM

She kept him as a coach coz he probably doesn't tell her to lose weight.

How can you call yourself a pro when you're so out of shape.

Or maybe she needs new PEDs...

by Anonymousreply 218September 11, 2020 5:21 AM

Serena has no movement left. I would like her to win a final slam, but I don’t think that’s possible.

by Anonymousreply 219September 11, 2020 5:32 AM

Serena won't win another GS. This was her last chance with players like Halep, Barty and the Canadian girl not playing. Time to retire and be a full time mom.

by Anonymousreply 220September 11, 2020 5:36 AM

Serena needs to retire in some semblance of dignity.

She's too fat, tired and old.

by Anonymousreply 221September 11, 2020 7:59 AM

I just don't think she has it anymore. And Lord, Granny Vee is practically using a mobility scooter to get around the court these days. It's time to hang it up, ladies.

by Anonymousreply 252September 11, 2020 11:35 PM

R252, yet he has no problem hitting Zverev himself!

by Anonymousreply 253September 11, 2020 11:59 PM

I still don't like Zverev, hope Thiem or Danil takes him out

by Anonymousreply 254September 12, 2020 12:44 AM

PCB out. That’s a shame. How did he not manage to win a third set or how did A. Zverev manage to keep him from winning a third set?

by Anonymousreply 255September 12, 2020 12:44 AM

Happy with the women finalists, ZFG about the remaining men, though it'd be good to see Thiem take out obnoxious AZ and Medvedrug.

As i watched the Thiem Medvedev match I was wondering to myself, in a match do they think in their native languages, or do they think in English. Then I decided that they must think in their native languages, in this case German and Russian.

by Anonymousreply 274September 12, 2020 4:16 AM

For some reason I never realized that Domicakes is tall. I thought he was short.

by Anonymousreply 275September 12, 2020 4:22 AM

Thiem's long outburst tonight was in German, so yes, they must think in their native languages.

by Anonymousreply 276September 12, 2020 4:23 AM

[quote] I thought he was short.

Why?

by Anonymousreply 277September 12, 2020 4:25 AM

[quote] I was wondering to myself, in a match do they think in their native languages, or do they think in English.

Why would you wonder whether they don't think in their native languages when playing?

by Anonymousreply 278September 12, 2020 4:28 AM

R276, I agree, but was impressed when Medvedev immediately went to English to jeer at the chair umpire. It’s like he has automatic language settings for sarcasm.

by Anonymousreply 279September 12, 2020 4:34 AM

ugh not a fan of Thiem off-court but I hope he destroys the entitled, spoiled, anointed divaPrincess Zvereva

to be fair Thiem has come the closest of anyone to winning a slam in the last 3 years. He's been able to defeat the big 3 but not consecutively.

by Anonymousreply 280September 12, 2020 4:57 AM

R274 in the PCB-Shapovalov match, PCB asked the umpire why Shapovalov didn't get a warning after uttering "cyka!" ("suka", the Russian word for "bitch"). The umpire said he didn't speak Russian so he didn't know. PCB said he doesn't either but knows that swear word lol

by Anonymousreply 281September 12, 2020 4:59 AM

Thiem is an idiot, but Zverev is a brat. Not sure which is worse.

Medvedev is a racist and a nasty piece of work, though, so happy he kept collapsing when serving for the set.

I’m surprised none of you cunts chimed in when ESPN cut to a shot of A Zverev in the stands watching the match barefoot with his feet up in front of him. He had deformed geisha pinkie toes, but also delightful blonde leg hair. He’s probably the only remaining contender with what appears to be yellow skin on an erstwhile causcasian competitor.

by Anonymousreply 286September 12, 2020 5:36 AM

Thanks R285.

by Anonymousreply 287September 12, 2020 5:38 AM

Medvedev has always apologized after every incident in which he’s hurled abuse at umpires, or, in one case, thrown coins. He’s always so sorry. But he never changes.

by Anonymousreply 288September 12, 2020 5:46 AM

Why are the posters in this thread so enamored with blond leg hair? I've nothing against it, but it seems to be a particular fetish here.

by Anonymousreply 289September 12, 2020 5:51 AM

Yes, I saw the German watching the match with his feet up. His feet are fine.

Zverev is repulsive in every way.

Thiem, despite being hot and fun to watch, seems like a spoiled little shit too, but I’ll be rooting for him to stomp AZ

by Anonymousreply 295September 12, 2020 1:22 PM

I don't think Thiem is stupid or spoiled, but he is pretty conservative in terms of money, well, just like his whole country. And he was not smart in the way he expressed his oppinion either. Berrettini said the same (not donate to players with less ranking) but was able to say it without irking everyone.

I think his previous nice guy image played against Thiem, people simply weren't expected him to be so harsh.

It happens to Nadal everytime he express an oppinion, in Spain there's always reactions when he does it because people got used to him being totally politically correct that now every little oppinion gets massive attention.

About the final, if Thiem plays well he'll win. He is playing way better than Sascha and he is dealing with pressure way better. Zverev needs to serve very well (something he is not doing) to have options.

If tennis were fair, Thiem will win, he was closer to win a GS in the past and he is playing way better in this touranment, but tennis is not always fair

by Anonymousreply 296September 12, 2020 1:58 PM

Tennis players usually have some of the grossest feet imaginable

by Anonymousreply 297September 12, 2020 2:09 PM

Also, Thiem has played a lot less than Zverev. Alexandra has played several five setters. She has to feel it in her bones.

by Anonymousreply 298September 12, 2020 2:51 PM

I think Thiem is way more mentally strong than A Zverev

R310, According to his mother, Nadal's mom uses the fireplace. He calls her to make sure she puts it out at night. He calls her 3 times to make sure she's done it. also he's afraid of thunder and other little things and he hates tomatoes.

by Anonymousreply 313September 12, 2020 8:15 PM

so neither Nadal nor Djokovic eat tomatoes

by Anonymousreply 314September 12, 2020 8:28 PM

I heard nadal hates white cheese, too.

by Anonymousreply 315September 12, 2020 8:31 PM

I know not if Medvedev is a racist, or an anti-Semite, or anti-women, or if his asshole act at the Open in 2019 was an act or just him being his honest self.

What I know is there is enough smoke there to know he's not a great person.

And that said, I still prefer him to Djokovic, who is never honest about who he is because of his desperate need to be liked. Medvedev may be a horrible person (or not), but I tend to think we see him showing who he is (especially when he's in bad temper).

I like & hate them both. So Azarenka`s win would be great feel good story. Osaka is is the favorite. I`m good with either, but would be happy to see Azarenka win. I was thrilled to see her slay her nemesis S. Williams.

by Anonymousreply 323September 12, 2020 9:05 PM

that's a nice Mariah song

by Anonymousreply 324September 12, 2020 9:06 PM

I love Osaka's activism and she has been cracking the ball. She's the favorite

I'm just glad it's a slam final between 2 slam winners. We've had enough new female winners in recent years

conversely it's time for new men's champs

by Anonymousreply 325September 12, 2020 9:07 PM

I like them both, the only thing that i don't like is the Vika's banshee scream

by Anonymousreply 326September 12, 2020 9:08 PM

I'm fine with either. It would be great to see the first mom to win the US open and it's not Serena! You know that's gotta be eating at her...maybe she is eating her feelings right now...

by Anonymousreply 327September 12, 2020 9:08 PM

Nadal doesn't use sunscreen, he hates the sticky feeling. "it's awful" he said.

From is 2011 autiobio : He also doesn't eat ham and cheese. (ham is national dish of spain).

Thunder/lightning: Hates it. He is terrified. He was scared as a kid, but "even now, when there's a storm and you need to go outside to fetch something, he won't let you," said his mother, again.

Swimming: Doesn't hate it, but he's terrified of it. And he doesn't swim unless he can see "sand at the bottom," says his sister.

Animals/dogs, in Rafa's own words: "I'm not comfortable with animals, not even with dogs. I doubt their intentions."

by Anonymousreply 328September 12, 2020 9:15 PM

Serena’s had a BABY, r327!!??!

by Anonymousreply 329September 12, 2020 9:15 PM

R328 you can tell he doesn't wear sunblock as he had age spots on his face up close and wrinkles when he makes a face.

Really interesting he doesn't swim since he loves to go on yachts

by Anonymousreply 330September 12, 2020 9:18 PM

Has Azarenka commented or been asked about what's going on in Belarus? She's the most famous Belarusian woman in the world

by Anonymousreply 331September 12, 2020 9:19 PM

R331 I think she was asked in an interview and quickly said she had no response.

by Anonymousreply 337September 12, 2020 9:38 PM

[quote] Osaka is very flat so far

And that's just her affect.

by Anonymousreply 338September 12, 2020 9:43 PM

Right now Osaka is playing how she used to before she became a champion. She's leaking errors in longer rallies

the other night against Brady, they were having long rallies with harder shots. Azarenka is redirecting the ball well but it's weird that she's on less defense so far

by Anonymousreply 339September 12, 2020 9:46 PM

Vika is taking it to Osaka.

by Anonymousreply 340September 12, 2020 9:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 365September 12, 2020 11:11 PM

She goes straight to her phone...typical.

by Anonymousreply 366September 12, 2020 11:12 PM

Osaka’s a weird one—she has an autistic otherworldliness—but she’s a fantastic player.

by Anonymousreply 367September 12, 2020 11:13 PM

Naomi will reach 24 before Serena.

by Anonymousreply 368September 12, 2020 11:14 PM

Osaka's outfist is as bad as Osaka's boyfriend hairstyle

by Anonymousreply 369September 12, 2020 11:16 PM

What amazes me about Naomi is the speed of her preparation, it's unreal. And then the racquet head speed.

by Anonymousreply 370September 12, 2020 11:17 PM

R367, She's definitely a strange person...I still can't warm up to her personality. I hate that she mumbles when she gives interviews. She's a great player though...

by Anonymousreply 371September 12, 2020 11:19 PM

I was thinking the same thing, r370. Loved that so many of the rallies were shot from about waist height, where you could really appreciate Osaka’s early preparation and that final “snap” just before she makes contact with the ball.

by Anonymousreply 372September 12, 2020 11:21 PM

So I was reading Vika wouldn't really comment on what is going on in Belarus...and she's met with and played tennis with Lushenko. Still and all a great match.

by Anonymousreply 373September 12, 2020 11:26 PM

That sage, Chris Fowler, referred to this as compelling. We agree.

by Anonymousreply 374September 12, 2020 11:27 PM

Yeah and she keeps her top spin FH low when hitting deep. And that angled FH when she's pulled VERY wide is incredible -- she returns a great angle with a short angle and pace.

by Anonymousreply 375September 12, 2020 11:28 PM

Chris Evert mentioned Vika having a child. Details please.

by Anonymousreply 376September 12, 2020 11:42 PM

Osaka is amazing! Love her! So happy for her!

Fuck the racists in this thread attacking her.

by Anonymousreply 377September 12, 2020 11:45 PM

So what if Naomi's a little socially awkward. It's good to have a #1 who's much less of a spoiled arrogant brat than some of her predecessors.

by Anonymousreply 378September 12, 2020 11:45 PM

Osaka has the overall best forehand in the women's game now. Not quite as powerful as Keys, but Osaka has more accuracy and consistency. She has the safest huge forehand. Her backhand and movement have improved in the last 3 years

Horrible start today by Naomi but then she turned things around. Azarenka started in good form but she lost confidence once she couldn't count on Osaka's errors anymore

Anyway they are both hardcourt specialists so I don't think they'll be big factors in the brief clay season coming up

by Anonymousreply 379September 12, 2020 11:46 PM

It's hard to know what Azarenka truly thinks about the situation in Belarus

yes she has met and played with Lushenko but remember, he is a dictator. It might be scary for her family if she had refused and it might be bad for them now if she were to speak up against him. We won't truly know until sometime in the future when he is either deposed from power or dead how she feels

Have we ever seen or read about her enthusiastically supporting him? I don't follow her closely but I don't remember anything close to Shapovalov's "I like Putin" stance

by Anonymousreply 380September 12, 2020 11:49 PM

I love me some super dork Naomi. I love how she apologizes for everything. Muricans cant relate coz its never their fault.

by Anonymousreply 381September 12, 2020 11:54 PM

I also love Vika, glad she is back. But Naomi slays all moms.

by Anonymousreply 382September 12, 2020 11:55 PM

Lukashenko

by Anonymousreply 383September 13, 2020 12:00 AM

Point taken R380

by Anonymousreply 384September 13, 2020 3:36 AM

God, you're so right, R381. I'm American, but I can't stand that very few people in this country ever seem to be able to accept responsibility for their actions or admit when they're at fault.

I'm glad Naomi won and was rooting for her, but I would have been fine with Vika winning, too. Hopefully Thiem can win tomorrow. I don't think Zverev can get away with a set or two of brain farting and pushing the ball like he did against PCB. Thiem played well against Medvedev but got some help from the octopus (apparently that's what Rublev calls Medvedev).

by Anonymousreply 385September 13, 2020 5:25 AM

I wanted Vika to win just because it could be her last chance at an Open. That said, I adore Osaka. I find her awkwardness oddly compelling and genuine (this may fade in years to come!). Barring injury, I can see her winning double digit Slams when it's all said and done. Her game is so complete.

by Anonymousreply 386September 13, 2020 5:30 AM

It'll be interesting to see if Osaka ever becomes a factor on clay and grass. You'd think grass would be a lock. Clay takes more patience though

by Anonymousreply 387September 13, 2020 5:51 AM

R368 No, unless she learns to play on clay and grass.

Naomi speaks with a fake voice. If you know anything about the Japanese women...they speak in a fake high voice, to make them sound innocent or who knows what the effect they are going for...makes them sound like they are 5. Naomi's voice isn't as fake but I can definitely hear it.

by Anonymousreply 391September 13, 2020 4:27 PM

How Japanese is she? Not her genes but her background.

by Anonymousreply 392September 13, 2020 4:54 PM

R392, she may have been influenced by the way her Japanese mother spoke, even though she herself has lived most of her life in the U.S. A Japanese woman told me that it is almost impossible to shake off that affected voice.

by Anonymousreply 396September 13, 2020 6:27 PM

Bouchard is improving though. She got to the QF in Prague and now the finals in Istanbul. If she is given more WCs especially at RG, she could have another run to the second week again. She was barely able to win any main draw matches for the last 3 years and now she's gaining momentum.

by Anonymousreply 397September 13, 2020 6:48 PM

Fake ass Naomi probably saw how much Nishikori earned so she claimed to be Japanese when she can't even speak Japanese herself.

by Anonymousreply 398September 13, 2020 6:52 PM

no. Osaka's father originally went to the USTA to get sponsored. They didn't think she was worth investing in compared to the others in her age group (not sure who those were). Obviously they couldn't go to Haiti as that country doesn't have the money to support a tennis player. So they turned to Japan who accepted her and now they are cashing in. Nishikori has tons of endorsements despite not winning a slam. Osaka is the highest paid female athlete and it will only grow with this third slam

whoever made that decision at the USTA not to invest in her should be fired lol

by Anonymousreply 399September 13, 2020 7:16 PM

Too late for that.

She makes more than the soccer players like CR7? He's got a lot of sponsors too.

by Anonymousreply 401September 13, 2020 7:19 PM

Osaka is the highest paid female athlete.

I'm sure that Serena is pissed about that one.

Naomi just checks more boxes, that's all. She's multi-racial, younger, and nicer.

by Anonymousreply 402September 13, 2020 7:22 PM

But she's not a mother!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 403September 13, 2020 7:30 PM

I'm just glad Osaka became the highest female athlete before Sharapova left the game. It was absurd she ever had that accomplishment. Also fitting that Osaka straight setted her at Indian Wells in her breakout season

R399

I'm not sure about that. Naomi has a Japanese last name, not her father's name for a reason. They saw $$$ in Japan. When she first broke onto the scene, she was adamant in saying she didn't know what it was like to be an American - despite living in the US for her whole life. The plan was always to play for Japan.

by Anonymousreply 406September 13, 2020 8:09 PM

They pay more in japan? Not in USA?

by Anonymousreply 407September 13, 2020 8:11 PM

Nishikori makes more in endorsements than Nadal.

Kenin and Stephens won slams recently and it barely made a blip. Osaka already had huge deals before she even won her first slam. Her family made the right decision to go for the big bucks in Japan.

by Anonymousreply 408September 13, 2020 8:14 PM

If Stephens had maintained her level she would have been HUGE. Bubbly personality and beautiful. I still see that chocolate milk ad here and there.

Kenin is less commercial IMO. Very athletic but ordinary looking and plain personality

by Anonymousreply 409September 13, 2020 8:25 PM

R399 That happens on every federation, spanish federation rejected Kuznetsova (it was not a real offer but Emilio Sanchez Vicario wanting to know if there was a real interest, Sveta's father probably wouldn't be happy with Kuznetsova changing nationality) and the most recent De Miñaur.

Alex has double nationality, but he lived in Spain at that time. His father lost his job so his career would be over before the start. They ask for help at the spanish federation and they said them they have better players (even if back then Davidovich and Kuhn were better it was a very very bad idea but they are very useless, they simply wait for an individual player to get it by himself (or herself) and get the merit)

R401 CR7 is not a female athlete

by Anonymousreply 410September 13, 2020 8:38 PM

Thiem team/Domicakes team or A. Zverev team?

by Anonymousreply 411September 13, 2020 8:47 PM

The plan was NOT always for Naomi Osaka to play for Japan. She wanted to play for the US as her idols the Williams sisters did. But the WTA and USTA decided that Shelby Rogers and Christina McHale and that other blond chick who did well in the Open four years ago but has been injured ever since were better bets and threw all their money behind them instead of Osaka. Osaka subsequently approached the Japanese tennis association and they wisely decided to help defray her costs as a rookie player. It doesn't take a genius to suspect why the WTA did not choose to back Osaka at the time.

Osaka's last name is Osaka because there's an odd custom in Japan of children born to female Japanese mothers but foreign fathers adopting the name of the city in which they were born instead of the father's. Yes, it is a tradition steeped in a lot of racist history and policy (for example, children with "Foreign" names had trouble inheriting property from grandparents and even their parents). Osaka's massive and well deserved success is helping to change that prejudice.

Finally, the reason Nishikori and Osaka are getting such huge endorsement deals in Japan isn't that Japan pays more but because they are getting bigger slices of a much smaller pie. They're basically the only two international athletic stars in Japan, which makes them basically the only internationally recognized Japanese stars in the world, certainly the only ones with any major recognition outside of Asia.

by Anonymousreply 412September 13, 2020 8:53 PM

Neither of them truly excites me, r411, but Thiem is just slightly less predictable. So it’s Thiem team for me.

by Anonymousreply 413September 13, 2020 8:53 PM

I would love to know tennis federations make decisions on who to sponsor. Some players peak as juniors while others improve and have their best results as adults. Looking at the winners of junior slams over the years, there are a bunch of them I've never heard of who failed to transition well to the adult tour.

There are cases like Sharapova who lived up to the hype since she was very young and who the USTA very much wanted but her father always wanted her to represent Russia.

by Anonymousreply 414September 13, 2020 9:01 PM

[quote] Where's the guy who used to post with a few paragraphs of drollery as a preamble to the Slams? I miss those, even with the corn.

In response to R340 at the below-linked thread (Part 57), that was me. I stopped posting them when tennis threads, including major threads, started being paywalled. It wasn’t worth it if the threads were going to be stopped after 300-400 posts and another had to be started. A brief intro is now more logical.

I wasn’t actually the originator of that “style” of posting on DL tennis threads. I started doing that about eight years ago when the original poster stopped. I just copied his shtick.

I can't stand Zverev's entitlement and the fact that like Sharapova, he's been treated like he already made it since he was a child. He's very arrogant behind the scenes and tournament officials don't like him. He even had the nerve to complain about his locker placement at Wimbledon a year or 2 ago.

I don't like Thiem off court and he's a dumb player but I love how he can crush the ball.

R412. Sorry no.

The USTA showed interest in Osaka at 16, but she had committed to Japan earlier despite the Japanese federation not providing her any monetary support.

In the words of her parents. "We made the decision that Naomi would represent Japan at an early age," Osaka's parents said in an email. "She was born in Osaka and was brought up in a household of Japanese and Haitian culture. Quite simply, Naomi and her sister Mari have always felt Japanese so that was our only rationale. It was never a financially motivated decision nor were we ever swayed either way by any national federation."

I wonder if Verdasco's tennis career is on its last legs. Yesterday he won only 2 games off Dzumhur in a 6-0 6-2 beatdown. Dzumhur isn't exactly a clay demon either

by Anonymousreply 423September 13, 2020 9:13 PM

R422 that's what her family says now. By the age of 16, yes the USTA did change its mind. When she was younger 13/14 the USTA did not want her. Her father figured it would be better to go with Japan than compete with many others and his decision ended up being right.

by Anonymousreply 427September 13, 2020 9:17 PM

first point already a Zverev forehand error lol between that and his second serve those are his biggest weaknesses

by Anonymousreply 428September 13, 2020 9:17 PM

Not sure the family statement makes sense. Didn't Naomi say something about the difficulty of fitting in in Japan being half black?

by Anonymousreply 429September 13, 2020 9:17 PM

What’s the deal with that little headband thing Thiem wears? Is it his trademark or something? It looks ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 430September 13, 2020 9:18 PM

I think Naomi's parents don't want to say anything that would offend the Japanese people or sponsors. At this point though, it doesn't matter. She is a tennis superstar and will never have trouble getting sponsors for the rest of her life. Naomi is honest. Her success is very good for mixed race people living in Asia, especially a mostly homogeneous country like Japan

by Anonymousreply 431September 13, 2020 9:21 PM

Yes. He's German of Russian descent.

by Anonymousreply 433September 13, 2020 9:22 PM

The one improvement Zverev has made is his volleys. After he botched that easy match point against Nadal in Indian Wells a few years ago, he's worked hard in that area

by Anonymousreply 437September 13, 2020 9:28 PM

R432 That whole thing with the highlights and the tiny headband is very girly and twee. He looks like an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 438September 13, 2020 9:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 439September 13, 2020 9:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 440September 13, 2020 9:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 441September 13, 2020 9:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 442September 13, 2020 9:39 PM

R442 he'll be insufferable. He already expects tournaments to give in to his every demand

by Anonymousreply 443September 13, 2020 9:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 460September 13, 2020 9:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 461September 13, 2020 9:50 PM

He better wake up fast because this is not looking good.

by Anonymousreply 462September 13, 2020 9:51 PM
