They thought giving him the Crispin Glover makeover would work? Hard pass.
nothing will be worse than Keaton; I don't care how great of an actor he is. He just isn't physically Batman.

Kevin Conroy has the voice of Batman. Absolutely. No one has ever been able to match him. He's only 64 and still handsome. No reason why he can't have his own Batman trilogy as an older Bruce Wayne. I'm going to talk to my producer friends about this.

I think it's strange that Pattinson took this role.
He was finally starting to make headway with roles like The Lighthouse with Dafoe and just starting to escape the franchise nightmare.
He has plenty of money from Twilight. Why he would even consider taking on Batman, given it's failure rate among actors is perplexing.
Except for Bale and Keaton, being Batman is the equivalent of that storefront that keeps changing from a restaurant, then cafe, then sandwich shop.

While true, he has made it known he HATED the obsessive fans of Twilight. Also, he's been struggling to break away from those types of roles.
He made a boatload on Twilight - easily as much as the Potter kids. Even if he wants more, he didn't NEED more, so taking a backward step seems counter productive.

Keaton fit because he is not traditionally attractive, unlike Clooney and Kilmer. It made the transition between Wayne and the bat palatable.
Plus he is a better actor than the pretty boys. With great comedic timing. Throw that in with Tim Burton when he still had his magic and costars like Walken, Phiffer and Devito and you have a decent flick.
Nolan can’t be compared because his direction was completely different. It’s apples and kiwi fruit.

Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns were perfect Gothic live action movies based on cartoons and comic books. The Danny Elfman score made them even better.
Pattinson looks like a better match for playing a deranged villain than a hero in those images. Although that could be a creative choice to go for the message that villains and heroes aren't that different when it comes to appearance.

Yes, and he was so looking forward to seeing Heath in the Batman film. He'd go on and on about it. If I recall, people said the poster was foreign or mentally challenged. He even posted crude color drawings he made of Heath as "Joker". Then the movie came out, and all he posted was "I did not like Heath Ledger in his role as 'Joker'". That was it. The love affair was over, and he was never heard from again. It became a meme though because of the suddenness of it after all that enthusiasm.

R32 they have all worn padded suits.
Keaton gets a pass because he can equally play almost anything. i think the only thing he hasn't done (or maybe i simply haven't seen) is hardcore tragedy. he has enough depth to carry someone living their life with a secret persona, giving enough hints that it is there without breaking his "normal" character.

I like Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman best. Captured the tragic side and sexy femme fatale side both excellently. Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt were classics and both great. Anne Hathaway wasn't too bad. Adrienne Barbeau did a sexy voice for the cartoon version. Halle Berry had the look but the film she was in was really poor in direction and writing, so I can't really blame her (same problems with her Storm role in X-Men).
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 24, 2020 5:20 AM |

I would prefer a Catwoman film with Michelle Pfeiffer than yet another Batman flick. I bet it could make $920 - $1 billion. I know she's 62, but people really don't care about age as long as the story is engaging. If it was in a similar vein to The Joker (psychological/hyper violent), it would make bank.

The nerdlings over at r/TheBatman are hotly debating the rumoured inclusion of a circus tent scene, which of course implies the appearance of the Flying Graysons.
Robins are a very conspicuous element missing in all these new Batman movies, constituting a major reason why the 21st Century Bats are all so unhinged and villain-adjacent. The Bat has a Robin as a moral compass, but more than that as a connection to humanity and its inherent spirit of idealism.
So many people, fanatic and casual, have been waiting forever to see a proper Dick (or Jason, or Tim) link up with Bruce. Sure, the Robins do appear in the tv shows such as TITANS and ARROW, but it’s not the same league as putting one in a movie.

This movie is supposed to take place early in Batman's career say around year 2. The director has said this film is supposed to be inspired by gritty 70s detective movies like Chinatown for example and neo noir.
Ben Affleck and the WB couldn't come to terms over a Batman script so he chose to leave the role and let someone else take over. Enter Robert Pattinson. There allegedly was supposed to be a version of Batman showing up on the Smallville tv show but Christopher Nolan had demanded at the time there be no other live action versions Batman. So the WB/DC gave in nixed any plans for Batman to appear on tv.

Burton’s films were revolutionary and are the reason why comic book films are still made today. They took inspiration from Frank Miller. They were adult. Burton struck the right balance. DC is making all of their movies dark and gritty and angsty as a way to carve out a niche. They're banking on how people are getting tired of the childishness of Marvel movies and how the "adult"-ness of DC movies can make them legit competition for Marvel.
They do this without realizing that Marvel movies are so lucrative because they follow the four-quadrant model.

R100 right?
Considering the egregious takes so far on 100 BULLETS, CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER, LUCIFER, MNEMOVORE, NEVERWHERE/STARDUST, and TANK GIRL I feel afraid to say this, but I wish they’d do more with properly adapting books from Vertigo. DC have done an semi-acceptable job of DOOM PATROL, PREACHER and SWAMP THING for tv, but it’s taken them decades and that’s all they’ve managed out of hundreds of other dark, edgy, mature titles and properties on the imprint. What gives?
If they want a shadowy, tragic, noirish, antiheroic superhero franchise, then there is the entire SANDMAN/DREAMING/BOOKS OF MAGIC lore to mine, or THE HUMAN TARGET, or even THE EXTREMIST. There’s also BLACK ORCHID and ZATANNA for the more traditional Batman-esque nightstalking capes n’mystery angle (plus bonus points for the female angle).
Feels like I’ve been waiting forever for my faithfully moody, cool, operatic movie or miniseries adaptions of AIR (very timely and topical, imo), ANGELTOWN (ditto), BREATHTAKER, CAN’T GET NO, CROSSING MIDNIGHT, DHAMPIRE, ENIGMA (so, so much explicit homoeroticism), GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, THE GREEN WOMAN, HEARTLAND, HEAVY LIQUID, INDUSTRIAL GOTHIC, LOVELESS, MOONSHADOW, OTHERWORLD, SAUCER COUNTRY, SEBASTIAN O (Victorian fop/dandy sociopathic hero, need we say more?) SHADE THE CHANGING MAN, TAINTED, TESTAMENT, TRANSMETROPOLITAN, THE UNWRITTEN (paging Dan Radcliffe...), and of course UN-MEN (especially the sad, gory and brutal AMERICAN FREAK).
And fwiw I also think that, in the right hands, their books AMERICAN VIRGIN, BLOOD & WATER, THE FILTH, HEX-WIVES, KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND, and PUNK ROCK JESUS could make for really funny, clever, dark and fucked-up sitcoms or black comedy films.

We needed one: Batman Returns.
And not a single follow-up film has topped it in 28 years.

I love that "Batman Returns" is such an enduring DL fave. Posters here can quote whole passages from the script (written by Daniel Waters of "Heathers" fame).

Batman Returns is iconic. I love how there are articles every year debating whether it’s a Christmas movie or not.

How many dicks did he suck to get the roles in Tenet and as Batman. He is a mediocre actor who isn't super good looking.

"Not just the movies, but why the constant cast changes?"
Because it's cheaper for the studios. This way the movies do not become star vehicles and actors don't get that much money for those roles. As opposed to, say, someone like Daniel Craig, who's making upwards of 75M per Bond movie now.

Keaton and Bale aren't regulation hotties either.

Bale is in comparison.
I tricked with a guy who resembled Michael Keaton. Better body, huge cock. He was also a go go dancer.

R116: Pattinson is easy to work with (no drama), reliable, and disciplined on set. Directors like him, including for those reasons.

Pattinson really wants to be liked, so he goes the extra mile to do whatever directors ask him to do with a smile on his face.
He's a mediocre actor who is famous for an embarrassing role. He knows he can't afford to be difficult.

I've only seen about half of one 'Twilight' movie on TV, R121, but I wouldn't think the work he did on that franchise was all that embarrassing. He was a young English actor who got his first big Hollywood break starring in these silly but commercially hugely successful vampire movies. I gather that within that genre and for that demographic (teens), they're not even that bad, and they're what jump-started his more 'serious' acting career. He has nothing to be embarrassed about, really--any actor in his position would have taken that role. It's not like some Hollywood star who writes, directs and stars in some huge commercial, critical and creative flop. Now that can be embarrassing.

R122 Financial success isn't everything, the Twilight movies are remembered as a joke starring pretty people who can't act. He'll never be seen as a serious actor by anybody other than his rabid fans because everyone else just looks at him and sees a glittery vampire.

He's worked with Claire Denis twice, with David Cronenberg twice, with Christopher Nolan several times. Actors can move past a teen franchise. In a few years' time he'll be remembered more for "The Lighthouse" than "Twilight."

Twilight happened over a decade ago and people still attach it to him. He's had multiple roles in award winning films since then, but he's still identified as "Twilight Star Robert Pattinson". Face it, Edward Cullen ain't going away any time soon. Twilight will follow him to his grave, it will forever be the thing he's most known for.

The lighthouse was a boring piece of crap. It was so excited to see it. Thought it was going to be really creepy and scary. All it was about was two drunks in a lighthouse.
