I’m Black. I think I have the thread closing comment. It is because a significant number of White people must ALWAYS feel superior to other races. Therefore many gaslight the Black people they encounter/work with. My office’s manager (who got this promotion based on who she knows and not what she knows) attempts it all of the time with me. I am well educated and come from a financially stable background, was raised in a nice, safe suburban neighborhood. Yet she treats me like a kid (we are only five years apart: I am 47 to her 52 years). She wants me to feel small and ineffective. It is palpable, her disdain for me. At first I put up with her attempts to make me feel small and marginalized; then, I decided to become strategic. I volunteered for undesirable tasks and aced them. I then became more on the Boss’ radar, who sees me for the capable person I am, and now trusts me more than the manager. Still, I feel I have to be humble in the manager’s presence, so that I am not overtly seen as a threat to her. I will one day get her job., even if I never earn from her the respect I deserve as a good worker. Fucking racist bitch that she is!

I think it’s because despite efforts to combat structural racism, black people continue to, on average, perform lower than whites on race neutral measures of criteria. What I have gotten to understand is that some people are just old and are nasty to just about everyone.... I'm remembering a sociology book , and it was going on how we were all use to our little towns with people that looked just like us and our brains adapted to that. The majority of the world outside Africa is Asian, so talking about structural issues in the US and perhaps Europe doesn't really answer the OP's question.

Skin color has been used as a reason to "look down upon" others all over the planet for centuries. Those in the majority race have always looked for a reason to look down on people who are not part of the majority, and skin color is the most convenient way a majority race has in the attempt to dominate the minority races. And it's not just an issue between the races. There are light skin black people who look down on dark skin black people. It's from long term societal conditioning. People who look down upon other races do so primarily because they were raised by people who look down upon other races. It happens, but you rarely see a grown man or woman who were raised by parents who taught them to be kind to everyone no matter their skin color then change and become racist bigots.

White Europeans were living in a climate with secure food sources. That allowed them to thrive, colonize the Americas, fend off invaders and benefit from trade with other continents.

It's quite interesting that events like enlightenment, which brought major change to Europe and shaped the western world into what we know it is today, happened because Greek philosophers had to flee Ottoman invaders. They brought their books and writings with them, which kick started the Renaissance in Italy, an era of science, and exploration. Enlightenment evolved out of this.
