Why did Adam Sandler's career go straight down the shitter?

It's not like he wasn't considered one of the most successful SNL comedians at one point!

No one stays on top forever, nor do many want to stay on that treadmill.

by Anonymousreply 1August 15, 2020 11:56 PM

Isn't that a picture of the Gap girls? I wonder what the GapPlaylistTroll thinks of them?

by Anonymousreply 2August 15, 2020 11:56 PM

He made enough money and he still makes bank for movies his company produces. He had kids and that was it for him. I saw him and his family in the Bahamas once. It was him, the wife and the two daughters. No assistants, no nannies, no one but them. I think he quit for his family.

by Anonymousreply 3August 15, 2020 11:58 PM

It didn't go straight down the shitter?

He had multiple hit films in the 90s. He was fine in the early 00s. It started to go down in the late 00s. Then he popped back up and got critical acclaim again with Uncut Gems last year?

by Anonymousreply 4August 15, 2020 11:59 PM

Hard core right-wing Republican.

Cancelled!

by Anonymousreply 5August 16, 2020 12:01 AM

He's an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 6August 16, 2020 12:02 AM

Adam Sandler's film career: Never underestimate the bad taste of the American public. Sandler is a republican turd with a wife who looks as if she's waiting for the mother ship to land, & two daughters who look like Amy Winehouse on a bad day.

by Anonymousreply 9August 16, 2020 12:09 AM

That is one fug family

[quote]He had multiple hit films in the 90s. He was fine in the early 00s. It started to go down in the late 00s. Then he popped back up and got critical acclaim again with Uncut Gems last year?

And he's had a production deal with Netflix since 2014 which was just extended. When he drops one of these terrible films on Netflix it's always in the top 10.

by Anonymousreply 11August 16, 2020 12:17 AM

Here’s a broader question, which former SNL star has had the most successful career?

Eddie Murphy?

Bill Murray?

Will Farrell?

by Anonymousreply 12August 16, 2020 12:22 AM

It’s a good thing he has money, because he’s not unloading those daughters without it. Oof.

by Anonymousreply 13August 16, 2020 12:42 AM

Why do they ALL look alike?😳

by Anonymousreply 14August 16, 2020 12:45 AM

[quote]Why did Adam Sandler's career go straight down the shitter?

Will Ferrell took his career.

by Anonymousreply 15August 16, 2020 12:46 AM

He was never all that funny.

by Anonymousreply 16August 16, 2020 12:47 AM

I want to see Adam's daughters fighting Teresa Giudice's daughters with ugly sticks.

We can only WISH that his career went down the shitter. Doesn't he have a ridiculous deal with Netflix?

by Anonymousreply 19August 16, 2020 12:51 AM

Motherofgod those daughters are going to need a hell of a lot of camels and goats as a dowry if they’re going to hope for marriage

by Anonymousreply 20August 16, 2020 12:53 AM

Not gonna lie, I'm envious of the fact that this asshole has gotten to coast by making fun garbage movies with his friends for decades. That doesn't sound like a bad career to me.

by Anonymousreply 21August 16, 2020 12:53 AM

Because he’s a piss poor actor and does everything for the money.

by Anonymousreply 22August 16, 2020 12:55 AM

UNCUT GEMS was one of the best movies last year, so OP can flush himself straight down the shitter.

Oy, are those girls mieskeit.

by Anonymousreply 24August 16, 2020 12:58 AM

I loved the film, but the fact is that Sandler did not give an especially remarkable performance. There's a reason the film got talked about much more than he does, both in media discourse and in awards buzz. The writing and, especially, the directing and cinematography were the standouts, but he was entertaining and competent; many other actors could have done the same role just as well.

by Anonymousreply 25August 16, 2020 1:00 AM

Those girls are going to grow up to be absolute STUNNERS!

by Anonymousreply 26August 16, 2020 1:02 AM

I enjoyed Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds (Free Winona!)... but he can kindly fuck off forever after that “LOL MEN GETTING MARRIED LOL” movie he did.

Actually, now that I think about it, there’s a gay kiss in Big Daddy that’s played up for laughs.

Fuck him. Glad he lost the Oscar nom.

by Anonymousreply 28August 16, 2020 1:11 AM

It actually didn’t. His movies got increasingly worse reviews as the 2000s went on but they consistently made money.

by Anonymousreply 29August 16, 2020 1:12 AM

Uncut Gems is a dog of a film, possibly the worst film that I've ever seen and I have recently watched Battlefield Earth whilst I was unwell and couldn't find the remote control.

by Anonymousreply 30August 16, 2020 1:17 AM

Wasn't this guy a chick flick staple? Don't understand why he was so popular with men.

by Anonymousreply 31August 16, 2020 1:32 AM

[quote]Here’s a broader question, which former SNL star has had the most successful career?

In terms of longevity, I nominate Jane Curtin.

by Anonymousreply 32August 16, 2020 1:36 AM

Because he's an asshole who appeals to other assholes, R31.

by Anonymousreply 33August 16, 2020 1:54 AM

I've never found him even the slightest funny.

He was always like the homely guy at every frat in America who the other guys swear is the funniest guy they know just because he's obnoxious and will never let go of a running gag.

by Anonymousreply 34August 16, 2020 3:20 AM

[quote]As of 2020, Adam Sandler’s net worth is estimated to be $420 million dollars.

Poor Adam's career in the shitter.

by Anonymousreply 35August 16, 2020 3:24 AM

He's making tons of money from them stupid ass movies he's making for Netflix. Especially that one with Jennifer Aniston. He was one of the highest paid actors last year. Can you believe that crap? I've always thought he was overrated. Always thought Chris Farley and David Spade were more talented than him.

by Anonymousreply 36August 16, 2020 3:35 AM

His movies kept getting worse and worse. Wasn't that one called "That's My Boy" about a kid who has sex with an adult woman who gets pregnant, kid of a Mary Kay Letourneau situation? It was supposed to be "funny" but critics found it excruciating.

by Anonymousreply 37August 16, 2020 3:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 39August 16, 2020 3:45 AM

Those ones on Netflix are really bad. I couldn't even get through a half an hour of the cowboy one. I think it a couple years ago on the Oscars where they had actors talking about their craft. And they showed him. I laughed so hard I almost choked. That was the first time I've actually thought he was funny.

by Anonymousreply 40August 16, 2020 3:45 AM

I did like Spanglish -- though I remember that being in spite of him rather than because of him.

R32, Jane Curtin’s last starring hit ended almost twenty years ago, and no one really ever thought of 3rd Rock from the Sun as a Jane Curtin vehicle. Curtin just has that along with Kate & Allie, and even though she won a few Emmys for it, that show has been completely forgotten.

Sure, that’s a better track record than Joe Piscopo or Laraine Newman, but to say that compares to people like Bill Murray or Eddie Murphy who have been household names for decades? Not even close.

by Anonymousreply 43August 16, 2020 4:04 AM

The whole Sandler clan is fug as hell.

by Anonymousreply 44August 16, 2020 4:20 AM

It's a pity his work is so horrible. He (and his family) are known for being incredibly down to Earth and kind

by Anonymousreply 45August 16, 2020 4:51 AM

Comedians have a short shelf life in movies, and Sandler's movies were particularly retarded. It's amazing he lasted for as long as he did.

by Anonymousreply 46August 16, 2020 5:41 AM

I love his early work but he hasn't made a good comedy in 15 years. He admits all he cares about is the vacation. I'm glad he lost for Uncut Gems. Even if it's a good movie, you can't make crap for years and then go "Oh, I wanna be taken seriously as an artist now"

I don't think so. He has a friend who's uncomfortable that his college buddies are dating and Adam's character tells him to get over it.

[Quote] I did like Spanglish -- though I remember that being in spite of him rather than because of him.

Spanglish is an underrated film.

by Anonymousreply 51August 16, 2020 9:44 AM

Sandler had one character that he did over and over in different scenarios. It got old.

by Anonymousreply 52August 16, 2020 10:02 AM

R47 he wasn’t nominated for Uncut Gems but made it clear he thought he should have been

by Anonymousreply 53August 16, 2020 10:51 AM

R46, you’re about to see an explosion of screwball comedy. It’s cheap, it easily translates, and it soothes.

by Anonymousreply 54August 16, 2020 10:58 AM

Market over saturation. And he's still doing it.

by Anonymousreply 55August 16, 2020 10:59 AM

He's allegedly worth $420 million. He'll be alright.

The world is a sadder place for this, though.

by Anonymousreply 56August 16, 2020 11:07 AM

That's what happens when you smoke too much Marajuanika.

by Anonymousreply 57August 16, 2020 11:08 AM

He was amazing in Uncut Gems (and Punch-Drunk Love many years ago), so he knows how to act when he wants to. It's too bad that he does not do that more often.

His performance was incredible in uncut gems. The quality of his films is terrible for betel though.. I don’t know that he is homophobic exactly? Gay characters have been in his films and didn’t feel it came across as that necessarily. How do we know he is a republican?

by Anonymousreply 60August 16, 2020 2:12 PM

Those girls are lucky they have a father who's filthy rich.

by Anonymousreply 61August 16, 2020 2:43 PM

He wasv a hawt Jew when younger and could still get it.

Haters got ton hate.

by Anonymousreply 62August 16, 2020 2:51 PM

He was never hot, but he was and is very likable and (sometimes) charming.

by Anonymousreply 63August 16, 2020 3:56 PM

Sandler's career is what he wanted it to be OP and he's actually one of the most successful actors of his generation.

He makes crappy films that appeal to not-very-bright teenage boys that make him hundred of millions of dollars and then he does more critically acclaimed stuff like "Uncut Gems"

He seems to be happily married and doesn't have a drug or drinking problem.

As for him being a Trumpist -- seems like another internet rumor based on the donations of a different Adam Sandler (see link)

by Anonymousreply 64August 16, 2020 4:03 PM

I'm gay but he appeals to my straight teenage boy within.

And the younger version got me all tingly down there.

Very confusing.

by Anonymousreply 65August 16, 2020 4:37 PM

Me too R65, me too.

by Anonymousreply 66August 16, 2020 4:42 PM

He made movies for 5-10 yr old boys 👦🏻

by Anonymousreply 67August 16, 2020 4:43 PM

PUNCH DRUNK LOVE was surprisingly good. But then he went back to his old formula for mediocre comedies. He and David Spade should be waterboarded before being allowed to make comedies again.

by Anonymousreply 68August 16, 2020 4:43 PM

The thing is that Sandler's mediocre comedies make five-star profits

by Anonymousreply 69August 16, 2020 4:54 PM

I can’t stand the guy but unfortunately middle America loves him

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 70August 16, 2020 4:58 PM

Was it really "straight" down the shitter? Wasn't he around for quite some time in comedies that did well at the box office? And he even got a pinch of dramatic cred in that movie with Tea Leoni.

by Anonymousreply 71August 16, 2020 4:59 PM

What r4 and r10 said. Adam Sandler is still working all the time and getting paid a lot of money. OPs premise is ludicrous.

Mind you, I think most of his movies are crap, but he is still widly successful.

by Anonymousreply 72August 16, 2020 5:02 PM

He's not an amazing actor. He just sucks so much that when he does serious stuff, people are dazzled.

by Anonymousreply 73August 16, 2020 5:11 PM

Some of his movies are pretty decent. The one with the scene of him and Jack Nicholson and Jack forcing him to sing the West Side Story song while stuck in traffic and everybody honking their car horns was genius.

Also I like the murdery mystery comedy one he did for Netflix starring Jen Aniston and DL fave Luke Evans.

However most of the movies he makes don't feel like they are made "for" me, so I rather skip them. His main demographic are the lazy couch potatoes who go for the fantasy of hot women falling for guys like them, because of their "inner beauty".

by Anonymousreply 74August 16, 2020 5:21 PM

[quote]Jane Curtin’s last starring hit ended almost twenty years ago, and no one really ever thought of 3rd Rock from the Sun as a Jane Curtin vehicle. Curtin just has that along with Kate & Allie, and even though she won a few Emmys for it, that show has been completely forgotten.

Her career began in 1975 and she's currently a regular on "United We Fall." She's worked pretty much continuously for 45 years--mostly in TV. Maybe Bill Murray comes close, but he started after she did. When was the last time you saw Dan Aykroyd in anything? Chevy Chase? Maybe. Although he has such a bad reputation he's not likely to be as dependable as Jane in the future.

by Anonymousreply 75August 16, 2020 7:54 PM

Curtin has worked consistently, R75, but then again so has Laraine Newman, whom I derided as a failure (she has what seems to be a thriving career doing voice work, so good for her). But that doesn’t make her the most successful SNL alum at all.

Put it this way: Jane Curtin does United We Fall and no one bats an eye. Could you imagine Bill Murray doing a supporting role in a network sitcom starring a Mad TV alum? No, because his career is so far above that level it would never happen.

by Anonymousreply 76August 16, 2020 8:21 PM

Said this many times on here. In the mid 00s I used to wait on Sandler and his wife. He was the nicest big time celeb I'd ever met. Great guy, affable, funny, patient, tipped ridiculous, remembered the entire staff's name, would take pics. He was seriously the coolest. And I hated his movies!

Now his wife? Yikes. Total bitch. Funny thing is Judd Apatow was also a regular at that time. He was just like Adam. The sweetest guy in the world with the world's worst wife.

by Anonymousreply 77August 16, 2020 8:22 PM

Has Adam ever done anal?

by Anonymousreply 78August 16, 2020 8:22 PM

The shorter daughter looks like one of Sarah Silverman's sisters. Not the rabbi, but the other one.

by Anonymousreply 79August 16, 2020 8:23 PM

R8, Botched rhinoplasty would be my guess.

by Anonymousreply 80August 16, 2020 8:25 PM

R77 Glad to hear he was nice.

by Anonymousreply 81August 16, 2020 8:34 PM

R77, did the wife speak English or a klingon-type language?

by Anonymousreply 82August 16, 2020 8:42 PM

Last year I watched his %100 Fresh Netflix special, expecting to hate it. I'd exhausted all the other specials and his was my last, desperate resort for comedy that night.

But he was HILARIOUS. I would even say "inspired." I ended up liking his the best of all the others I'd seen. His movies may suck but his standup act blew me away.

by Anonymousreply 83August 16, 2020 8:42 PM

His nasolabial folds are off-putting.

by Anonymousreply 84August 17, 2020 12:43 AM

[Quote] Now his wife? Yikes. Total bitch. Funny thing is Judd Apatow was also a regular at that time. He was just like Adam. The sweetest guy in the world with the world's worst wife.

So this explains how Funny People happened.

by Anonymousreply 85August 17, 2020 1:12 AM

He was really unfunny, has a really annoying voice and his family is just ugulay.

by Anonymousreply 86August 17, 2020 1:14 AM

Adam Sandler spent 15-18 years making two movies per year at $20 million salary each. Before bonuses that added up to another $20-40 million. He has personally earned over half a billion dollars in acting fees.

In the late 2010's, facing declining box office, he eventually signed with Netflix to do more movies at $20 million salary each. He is probably limited in terms of bonuses on those. It's ONLY $20 million overall since there's no box office.

He has truly been destroyed and his career is in definitely in the shitter. Human fail!

by Anonymousreply 87August 17, 2020 1:19 AM

R82, his wife (and her horrible extended family - who often dined with Adam, wifey and the girl - only one then, IIRC) thought she was the STAH of the family and treated us peons like, well, peons. Funny thing is that as she was doing it? Adam would be rolling his eyes at me trying to make me laugh and how ridiculous she was acting.

I get why everyone likes him and why he worked so much for the better part of 15 years - despite his lack of actual talent. He's just fun to be around.

by Anonymousreply 88August 17, 2020 4:10 AM

Knowing that Adam Sandler is a nice guy makes me less bothered my his success.

by Anonymousreply 89August 17, 2020 4:12 AM

the thing is, his early comedies are fun. But for the past 15-20 years, it's all crap. Can't he at least demand decent scripts?

by Anonymousreply 95August 17, 2020 6:29 AM

Adam Sandler was robbed of an Oscar nomination this year for "Uncut Gems". He gave the performance of his career.

by Anonymousreply 96August 17, 2020 6:31 AM

When he was on SNL, I hated his singing bits but I loved, "The Denise Show."

I really enjoyed Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy and even Big Daddy. Then around Little Nicky I stopped thinking he was funny and I guess I grew up.

He was good in Uncut Gems but his Netflix stuff has been terrible to me.

by Anonymousreply 97August 17, 2020 6:38 AM

What shocks me is that he ever had a career in the first place. I guess it’s that SNL mafia in Hollywood. What did he do? Make silly faces and do funny voices?

“GENIUS!”

by Anonymousreply 98August 17, 2020 7:01 AM

I can't see Pete Davidson doing the same kinds of juvenile comedies Sandler has done. Those kinds of movies are over.
