He looks awful for 58.
Did anyone read Leif Garrett's autobiography "Idol Truth"?

Why is he famous? Never had any hits that I remember, and yet he was all over teen magazines. Same thing ten years earlier with talent-free Sajid Khan, who was a mainstay of "16 Magazine" and "Tiger Beat".

He kinda looked like Dylan and Cole when young.

Was he the original Jennifer Lopez? A performer who's vocals were so heavily blended with stronger singers that it didn't even sound like him.

He looks awful for 60? I don't think so.

He was still doing drugs long after he claimed to be sober.

Leif with Brooke Shields. Both were beautiful and both exploited to make profits for the business. Leif was the original Disney Channel pop star, couldn't sing or dance well but tween girls loved him and bought his music and merch.

What did he say about Kristy MacNichol?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 1, 2020 2:44 PM |
He was a decent actor and is pretty funny. He should have focused on movies and TV rather than singing. That variety show hour he had showed he is a good comedic actor and his small role in The Outsiders was pretty good. He could have spent the early 80s doing films when he still had his looks.

I'm glad he's opened up about his past. I read some what was available on Google Books. He had an abusive and neglectful dad and his mom worked in Hollywood and put him and his sister in the showbusiness. He mentioned he was exploited and overworked and lacking proper adult guidance. He wasn't comfortable being a sex symbol at such a young age too. He also felt like a fraud because he knew he wasn't actually singing in some of his songs and lip synced a lot. He wanted to make hard rock music but his label made him do disco and bubblegum ballads. He kinda reminds me of Bjorn Andresen and Joe D'Alessandeo who both in hindsight felt uncomfortable being sexualized so young. Leif despite his problems seems kind and loving and he's self-deprecating about his idol past too.

What happened to all his money?

He's probably Dylan and Cole Sprouse's real father.

Like Keanu Reeves and Sasha Mitchell, he still sounds like a teenager from California.

He said on Dr. Oz that when he was dating Nicolette Sheridan that her career was on the rise and his was on the decline. Dude, your career was over by 1979.

I can't picture them getting away with this today. Having a barely legal guy show bulge and market it to young girls lol

He looks as rough as his ex Justine Bateman. Did he say anything about her in his book BTW?

I think if he'd cut his hair, he would look better. He isn't ugly and he still has really nice eyes and features. He looks better than most average people at his age.

Does he talk about his mentally challenged little sister?

I think he looks good for 58, all things considered. From what I remember he was like a comet and had a quick career but I wish him well with his book. It's difficult being in show business at such an early age and may be needs money now so I hope the book does it for him.

He looked good with short hair during the early 80s.

He was born in Hollywood! Had 3 Top 40 hits singles, the first being when he was only 15. A Teen Idol from back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 2, 2020 6:18 AM |
He wasn't even handsome or pretty.

Leif was a probably prototype for the future teen idols who got cross-promoted through TV, film and music to rake in profits for corporations despite limited talent. David Cassidy and Ricky Nelson actually had musical talent so it wasn't a stretch for them to get attention for it. But Leif was when they did tried to make a non-singer happen and this was before Janet, Madonna and Paula and before J. Lo, Hilary and Selena. Leif was also successful in Japan (the land of untalented pretty boys and girls becoming big pop singers) just like Alyssa Milano and Jennifer Connelly (yes they both tried being pop singers).

His music isn't even remembered. So he can't make money off of it. Plus he didn't write any songs. He had no longevity. Even New Kids on the Block still gets their music played on 80s stations despite being hated in their heyday.

I'm not sure it was popular pre television and picture sleeves.

R22 He has a chapter about Justine in his book. He said Justine was really into politics and an intellectual which he found refreshing. He also mentions that Rob Lowe was freaking out about his sex tape getting leaked and confided to Leif, Justine and Judd Nelson about it. Leif and Justine split up amicably, they just drifted apart. He also mentions paparazzi trying to bribe him to record Michael J. Fox's wedding and said he felt that was when celebrity culture was getting out of hand.
A lot of his book is available online on Google Books for some reason. I didn't even buy it.

He wasn't conventionally attractive but neither is Mick Jagger, Harry Styles and Timothee Chalamet and girls loved them.

He was a decent actor and should’ve stayed on that path. He wasn’t cut out to be Shaun Cassidy or Andy gibb both of whom had more talent, charisma and better producers than he did.

Leif singing his songs live on a Japanese variety show. He doesn't sound too bad.

One of the rare times he sang without lip syncing. His voice is pretty weak here but he looks good in the leather pants.

He’s such an enigma. I’ve been fascinated with him since watching a VH1 BTM on him years ago. He was the initial creation that lead to Bieber etc
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 2, 2020 6:26 PM |
He definitely was a charismatic and sensual performer on stage and loved to please the crowd. A lot of male pop stars today lack that sexual energy. He appears to be straight but I wonder if he ever experimented.

I found episodes of Soul Train and American Bandstand on YouTube and it's so obvious that many artists were lip-syncing. It seemed more acceptable back then than now or maybe the TV quality was so bad nobody could tell. I actually can see why televised events want artists to lip-sync mainly to prevent things from going haywire and to keep up that illusion they sound just like the record. It's fake but makes sense from a commercial standpoint. Didn't the Ashlee Simpson incident actually push SNL to ban lip-syncing due to the backlash?

The label also wants to sell "the record." Good singer or no, the audio mix is often poor on those kind of TV shows.

Leif said that MJ asked him how to masturbate? Weird way to flirt with someone but at least he was going after someone his own age.

ONJ and Andy Gibb sung a few songs together. Andy had a nice voice and I liked his albums.
