Baseball caps shade the eyes from the bright lights of the set, suits denote a position of leadership and professionalism. Almost everyone on set will wear a baseball cap or hat with a large brim.

In the 1980s it was suits and tennis shows. Letterman used that look. And that didn't hide baldness.
