Trunk call: the comeback of skimpy Speedos

Trunk call: the comeback of skimpy Speedos

Designed for practicality, the Speedo has delighted and dismayed in equal measure. Now the swimwear classics are back in fashion – but would you dare?

I'll take "But Not In America" for $200, please Alex

As an aside: it seems amazing in retrospect that Mark Spitz was ever considered a sex symbol - today, with his naturally scrawny frame, he’d be laughed out of any gay (or str8) bar in the country.

^Speak for yourself. He looks naturally sexy in OP pic. Overdone musclemen are a boring, phony looking eyesore.

Unless you look like an Olympic swimmer, please don't.

Board shorts were around in the 60s. Snoopy used to wear them.

“That peculiarly adolescent strain of American puritanism” captures it perfectly.

I am no more likely to try to shame a non-standard non-skinny man for wearing them as I would be for a less than thin, less than young woman for wearing a bikini.

Body fascists can fuck off! And I’m pretty sure that the most vocal opponents of speedos cannot swim to save their lives.

These look good only on Instaho trainers and “influencers”

I've always thought it odd that male volley ball players and male surfers say they need baggy swimwear for freedom of movement, yet female surfers and female volleyball players wear the skimpiest of bikinis. Do women surfers and volley ball players not need freedom of movement as well?

If somehow men were required to wear speedos at the beach or pool, you best believe there would be a huge increase in penile enlargements.

Men would be as obsessive of dick size as women are the size of their tits.

I never stopped wearing them! I'm sexy AF!

I love Speedos. So much more comfortable. I hate trunks that stay wet when you come out of the water.

"As an aside: it seems amazing in retrospect that Mark Spitz was ever considered a sex symbol - today, with his naturally scrawny frame, he’d be laughed out of any gay (or str8) bar in the country."

He had the ideal physique at the time. "Swimmer's build" was frequently featured in sex ads because of Spitz. This lasted into the early 80s and AIDS is what caused the heavily muscled body to be most desirable.

I wore Speedos for about a year in the 80s. Even in the allegedly liberal beach town I lived in, they were very frowned upon. A man came up to me and said I was a stupid Mexican for wearing them in the U.S. and immediately stormed off. For me it was one of those dumbfounding moments when someone's racism and homophobia came together and created: surrealism!

Art in everyday life kids. Remember this story if someone questions your declaration that skimpy Speedos are ART!

Everything in men sucks because of what American men do to their bodies and try to force them upon the world. I'm glad that forced circumcision did not gain much traction as a way to prevent AIDS, a very disturbing American idea.

Dare? Oh, Mary! That's all we used to until the homophobic 90s.
