This stuff sounds more like late 70s.

Silkience, which promised to scientifically target grease at your roots without drying out your ends. Remember their commercials with the science-y beep-boop-beep and the "high spectrum photography?"

Wella Balsam shampoo had Brooke Shields hawking it. But did anyone think she used that cheap shit?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 8, 2020 12:42 AM |
Jaclyn Smith was a Wella shill too.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 8, 2020 12:44 AM |
Prell was a beautiful color.
And before the thread police object that it wasn't a 80s shampoo, I am not old enough to know it from the dark ages (1950s-1970s). Also, this photo is of a vintage 1980s product for sale on ebay.
Take that, thread police!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 8, 2020 12:45 AM |
To one up Brooke, there was Prell shampoo with Christie Brinkley selling it with corny enthusiasm. OG Prell is still being sold. Possibly the harshest shampoo that’s not a scalp treatment shampoo around today. Had a Japanese female friend who swore by it because she said it stripped her black hair to a derp brown color.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 8, 2020 12:47 AM |
It’s from the 70s, r25.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 8, 2020 12:47 AM |
But it was used in the 80’s. There was no requirement in the OP that it had to debut in the 80’s.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 8, 2020 12:49 AM |
Thank you r28. I know it's older, but I remember commercials like the one in r26 from the 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 8, 2020 12:50 AM |
Christy Brinkley really had it all looks-wise. She won the gene lottery.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 8, 2020 12:50 AM |

It might have originated in Europe in the 40s, but it was launched in the U.S. in the 80s.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 8, 2020 2:06 AM |
I think Breck made a comeback briefly in the late 80s with a pink bottle?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 8, 2020 2:11 AM |
Breck
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 8, 2020 3:34 AM |
Breck was like washing your hair with glue.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 8, 2020 3:38 AM |
Breck smelled like liquid Dial, Timotei smelled like original Clairol's Herbal Essence, and Prell smelled like Scrubbing Bubbles, formerly known as DOW Bathroom Cleaner with Scrubbing Bubbles.
Wella-Balsam smelled like real pine trees.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 8, 2020 5:05 PM |
I loved the smell of original Pert. I always wondered why they changed it. It was along that Herbal Essence-Timotei profile.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 8, 2020 5:10 PM |
Any former fans of Revlon Aquamarine? It had a lovely scent.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 8, 2020 5:15 PM |
I loved Pert Plus! it smelled so good and made my hair sooooo soft and silky. Perfect for the floppy 80s and 90s cut I wore.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 8, 2020 5:17 PM |
Pert Plus was really popular in the 80s, and everybody's mom used Vidal Sasson. VS shampoo had a great scent.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 8, 2020 5:32 PM |
Pantene came in glass bottles and was sold at department stores.
Remember Paul Mitchell? Awapuhi was awful shampoo but it smelled great.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 8, 2020 5:51 PM |
When I was a kid in the 80s, I thought that people who used Paul Mitchell were glamorous cocaine addicted party hounds with Patrick Nagel prints on their walls.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 8, 2020 6:00 PM |
R48 In Europe one could purchase Pantene at pharmacies or chemists. It was very concentrated, yet as thin as water. One Tablespoon yielded sixteen oz, if I remember correctly. I think it was around since the forties, or fifties.
It was originally made in small quantities by Suisse Pharma giant Hoffman-La Roche. Even for rich people, it was quite spendy, despite the concentrated conitioner formula. It's equivalent today would be Kerastase as regards cost.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 8, 2020 6:12 PM |
They were r49. They surely were.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 8, 2020 6:33 PM |
R51 / R49 They were connoisseurs of Erté lithographs and dolls as well.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 8, 2020 6:58 PM |
I was obsessed with Agree as a teen gayling circa 1985. I can’t even tell you why but I loved the smell.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 8, 2020 7:16 PM |
I don't think the 1980s were really a decade of iconic shampoos. That would be the 1970s, as noted above. Because I was going to say JellaSheen but it turns out that was a 1970s product too.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 8, 2020 7:29 PM |
R53 It did smell wonderful. It really was great for oily hair.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 8, 2020 7:46 PM |
Salon Selectives was mentioned above, that was another very popular shampoo that all but disappeared. I've seen it at the Dollar Tree on occasion, but not in any other stores for many years.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 8, 2020 7:49 PM |
I remember one I loved- I think it was a Brown Bottle with a rainbow looking thing on it-
It was called "Dimension" and it always reminded me of Summer for some reason.
I recall it was as harsh as Prell!!
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 8, 2020 7:55 PM |
Prell was good to have, especially if you used Pert Plus because PP left a lot of buildup on your hair. You needed something harsh like Prell to strip it off once in a while.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 8, 2020 8:39 PM |
I was such a dumb kid that I thought Prell was the GOOD STUFF, and Jirmack (sp?) starring Victoria Principal had to be the BALLS!!!!!!!!!
My cunt mu-va used Pantene back when Pantene was the SHIT!
And this bitch bought be SUAVE!!!!!! FUCKING SUAVE!!!!!! Even at 5-6 years old I knew we that we were enemies.
Now I use Aveda Invati and Oribe. Trying to undo the damage of that Suave!
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 8, 2020 9:57 PM |
R60 I've seen the hairspray, but never the shampoo.

Long and Silky. Might be from the 70s though
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 9, 2020 12:13 AM |
[R45] I loved Revlon’s Aquamarine I used to use it after swimming at the beach
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 9, 2020 12:14 AM |
Prell is still on the shelves at some places I shop. You can buy it on Amazon, as well.
The rage in the 70s was egg shampoo. As a young one, I wondered how many eggs they used for each bottle. I was a little grossed out by the idea.

Sunshine Harvest Shampoo
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 9, 2020 12:43 AM |
The 80s Pantene was the "classy" shampoo. It had a much better scent back then.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 9, 2020 1:19 AM |
R48, remember Paul Mitchell? It’s sold everywhere you fool!
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 9, 2020 4:46 AM |
I thought that had to be a joke, R68. But not only did Touch of Yogurt really happen, it was preceded by Look of Buttermilk!
What the hell were they smoking at Clairol in the '70s?

by Anonymous | reply 74 | August 9, 2020 9:09 AM |
I thought all American toiletries were glamorous. The best thing ever brought back for me was a Christmas-themed box of three shitty little 'our impression of...' shampoos — Drakkar Noir, Polo, and Giorgio.
I rationed them for special occasions and always made sure to swing my hair around in people's faces in hopes of a compliment that never came.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | August 9, 2020 9:26 AM |
Pert Plus was the first very popular 2-in-1 (shampoo & conditioner combined) product. It worked great on my hair and I used it. And then, for reasons unknown, they (I think it was Procter and Gamble) changed the damn formula and never changed it back, like Flex did.
Finesse (dark blue plastic bottle) smelled good.
Agree was also very good and smelled great.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | August 9, 2020 9:45 AM |
Does anyone remember a clear magenta shampoo that came in a translucent cylindrical container, sometime in the mid-'70s? I thought it might have been a Jheri Redding product, but I can't find a picture of it anywhere online.
I remember using lots of different shampoos in the '70s. Breck Basic Texturizing Shampoo. Protein 21. Earth Born. Herbal Essence. Vidal Sassoon. Pantene or Wella Balsam Conditioner afterwards. How DID I put up with the stink of two products plus cologne?
Here's my favorite package design from then, for Protein 21. This shade of red is the same color as the shampoo I'm trying to identify.

I loved Earth Born Apricot Essence shampoo. I loved the fragrance. Gillette manufactured it and it was PH balanced.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | August 10, 2020 8:03 PM |
Sebastian had ok shampoos (I preferred Nexxus Therappe) but damn this shit could turn you into Howard Jones meets Billy Idol in 2 shpritzes. Spray while blow-drying (don't worry about the flammability!)
by Anonymous | reply 81 | August 10, 2020 8:12 PM |
You used selsun blue
by Anonymous | reply 82 | August 10, 2020 10:06 PM |
R80 L'Oréal used to make an Apricot scented children's shampoo that was really nice. I believe it was discontinued in the early aughts.
Wasn't Earth Born a 70s shampoo though? I have a friend who misses it as well. She claims Grisi Aloe shampoo from Mexico smells like Earth Born.
