I didn't think she looked bad into her early 70s, except the makeup, but since she doesn't let anyone see her in the last 20 years who know how much she's changed since this was taken.
I've always been glad she was able to turn her life around after all those problems and assaults against her in the 60s.

I'm very conflicted about Lens. On the one hand, it is truly horrible to have chronic diseases, and I commend anyone who's working to educate the public on how to live with them. On the other hand, she's so blatant and overt about exaggerating and trolling for sympathy.
She's so devastated about being homely in the entertainment industry, but when she was controlling her weight and paying attention to fashion, she actually was attractive. Too bad she was overwhelmed by bad health and self-pity..

Ashley Judd is reportedly on steroids for some illness. Hence, the moon face.
I saw the dr Phil episode with Shelley Duvall. Unspeakable cruelty and the height of insensitivity. It seems as though she was “persuaded” by Phil and the staff to come on the show so she could “get help.”
That charletan turned it into a freak show side show. “Tell is when it got really bad ...”
by Anonymous | reply 94 | August 8, 2020 8:05 AM |
R30 I agree. Am all for “celebrities signed up for this shit” but I’m disturbed they took those pictures of someone clearly in pain — and it’s not like she was such a big star. Leave the poor woman alone.
I think Al looks great. Cybill would look a lot better about 20-30 lbs lighter. I know we say too thin ages you, but it works the other way too, I’d say even more so to be honest. Really, as you get older (for women) the range of weight where your looks are optimal gets smaller and smaller, sadly.
Meg Tilly just looks a little older with grey hair, like Ali MacGraw.

The thing about Karen Valentine and others like her - what on earth does she do to make money these days? Did she invest well? Her series and her films are so long ago they would not be yielding any meaningful income, and she didn't work enough (look at her IMDB) to have a huge pension coming in from the unions. There's no evidence of her doing any substantial theatre or live appearances since the millennium. So...how does she live? Did she come from money? Is she that in demand at the autograph shows?

The eternal mystery. Some actors work like dogs for decades, saying yes to everything, good roles and payday roles and being generally well paid for it and across the rising scales of decades, yet money seems never to accumulate very much in their hands for no obvious vice or habit. They have little to show for their acclaim and ubiquity. Others have a brief career in a handful of roles then fade from the scene and live very handsomely from money made within the time you could get an undergraduate degree, and without any obvious source of income beyond that and they die with large estates.
There are some obvious explanations sometimes: a chain of expensive divorces, bad investments, profligate children on the one hand, or wise investments, lucrative marriages, lucrative residuals, etc., But often not.

I know Melanie Griffith has her nose done in that “face transplant” but what happened to it to begin with? It wasn’t perfect but nice and cute enough when she was doing movies but then in that left picture it just looks so wide and misshapen and..kind of deformed.
Cocaine? But a lot of actors have done as much as she has and that doesn’t happen to them. So I’m not really sure the story there...

r216 I don't remember the FAG episode, but I'm sure it turned out he wasn't gay after all, just sensitive.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | August 9, 2020 6:12 PM |
After doing some research, the FAG episode was titled "What is a Man?", and it originally aired on December 3, 1971.
"In this episode, Miss Johnson decides to put on a production of Shakepeare's "Twelfth Night" with an all-male cast. Howard, the young man playing the female lead, is ridiculed by other male students who assume that he is a homosexual. Though he pretends that their comments do not bother him, little by little Howard's sense of humor grows thin. He mistakenly believes that he must be something he is not in order to prove that he is a real man; though he suffers from asthma, he decides to try out for the track team."
Miss Johnson was Karen Valentine's character, right? See, that bitch was always causing trouble.
So I was 9 years old when it aired, and it's stayed in the recesses of my brain ever since. Interesting.

The date of the article is January 2020, the article was posted by me, above. Denise Nicholas is 76, Karen Valentine is 73, Judy Strangis is 71, David Jolliffe is 68. Guess it was a show where the teachers and students were played by actors almost the same age.

R298. I don't know if it's in reruns, but it was a damn good show way back when. Great comedy/drama that emphasized the teachers and their interaction with the students rather than an emphasis on the students. This allowed the show to discuss the issues of the day including race, politics, the Vietnam War. I remember the theme song and opening credits like it were (almost) yesterday.

Why do people let themselves go like that? Is it that hard to keep up your grooming and attire when out in public?
Some things are evident:
Facial hair makes an older man look much older.
Excess weight ruins almost anyone's appearance.
Smoking and sunbathing accelerate an aged appearance
Grooming is a lot more important when you're older.

OP doesn't say that Karen looks terrible, only that he doesnt' recognize her. I wouldn't either, but I do think she looks pretty damn good for 73. I haven't made it through the whole list yet, but many that I've seen actually look really good: Lee Majors, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick both look great. Rupert Everett, Sean Young & Tina Yothers too. Some, of course have gained a lot of weight or just haven't aged well. I know the DL runs on funny gay snark, but what strikes me the most is how difficult it must be to have been a beauty or a hunk in your younger years, and to have gotten older out of the spotlight so people don't see the change gradually. Brendan Fraser, however, WTF?

Why do most of these celeb looks at least 10-15 years older than their actual ages? I assume most were heavy smokers, drinkers or druggies? Some had terrible plastic surgery, which was done all at once, compared to gradually? They are now poor and struggling? Which, of course, affects their physical and mental health.
People I know who are the same ages listed as these celebs, all look quite good. There sure aren't as wrinkly and saggy and none had any work done.
Some of these celebs in their 50s-60s-70s have the wrinkles of an 80-90 year old!
Michael Schoeffling, for example, is 59, he looks closer to 70 or older.

Ann Jillian is another one on the "what on earth do you do for money to live?" list, especially since her husband is her manager, he manages only her and no other actor, and that has been the case basically forever. Even with It's a Living back in circulation, the residuals can't be that much and the pension might be adequate but only that.

Some Ann Jillian trivia. Apparently she had a rift with Ann Miller on Sugar Babies. When Miller fell ill during rehearsals Jillian filled in for her but when Miller got better she accused the other of wanting to keep her leading part. Jillian worked out her contract then left the show but got her revenge in her made-for-TV movie The Ann Jillian Story. When it covers the show it gives the impression that she is the star and there is no mention of Miller or Mickey Rooney.

Ann Jillian was 12 years old when she played Dainty June in the movie version of "Gypsy." The younger version of her character, Baby June, was played by Morgan Brittany.

"Why do most of these celeb looks at least 10-15 years older than their actual ages?"
Has it ever occurred to you that most of these photos are candids without hair, make-up and lighting? After that in some cases there's bad plastic surgery which I see every day among the non-show biz population.

No, r379, it's Botox and other cosmetic procedures in actors who are trying to stay young and hot forever.
The result is deformity and a lot of older characters who don't look natural or like the actor's former self.

We may recognize Mickey Rourke today because he had a comeback.
But he looks nothing like he did in his prime.
by Anonymous | reply 383 | August 11, 2020 5:40 PM |
I think Lesley Ann Warren looks great - particularly when she was on Will and Grace.
A lot of these older actors (particularly male) never took care of their skin and tanned a lot in SoCal. Skin care just wasn't a thing for men 40-50 years ago. Hell, SPF wasn't really a thing - the highest SPF you could buy was 8 and that was hard to get and you were laughed at for using it.
Plus it was pre-botox - the only real way to look better was actual plastic surgery. You can't keep cutting yourself up and pulling it back.
Female actors have the benefit of long term skincare, hair pieces and makeup. Older male actors, not so much.
It will be very interesting to see what the Gen X age of actors will look like as they get into their 60's and 70's.
Sandra Bullock is 56. 40 years ago, many of these older stars would have been starring on the Love Boat at age 56, looking like they were 70.

That's mainly so they'll continue to be employable. Even TV news anchors and reporters have gone under the knife to look "youthful enough" to do the job. I blame employer ageism as much as vanity.

[quote] Has it ever occurred to you that most of these photos are candids without hair, make-up and lighting? After that in some cases there's bad plastic surgery which I see every day among the non-show biz population.
I don’t agree at all, I’m a photographer. I’ve taken many candid photos of friends and family during Holidays, barbecues and other occasions, there is no special lightning at these events, I don’t filter my pics or use Photoshop etc, my female relatives and female friends haven’t had their makeup applied by a professional makeup artist. Everyone looks fine, some look amazing.
Many of my family and friends, who are around the same ages as the celebs in this thread, all look light years better than these celebs.
Please don’t blame the years of celebs needing to be in heavy makeup for their films and TV series, that’s an absurd excuse. Unless the celeb has severe allergies, makeup doesn’t cause deep wrinkles, jowls or sagging. An allergic reaction usually doesn’t manifest itself in those ways.
I tend to blame the terrible plastic surgery as well as many of these people have likely been druggies, heavy drinkers and smokers. Abuse to their bodies takes its toll. I always laugh when people who were heavy into drugs, smoked and drank a lot during their teens and 20s, suddenly wonder why, in their 30s and 40s, they look 60!
by Anonymous | reply 392 | August 12, 2020 2:06 AM |
r392, I don't know who your friends are, but I don't know any 50-somethings in my everyday life who look like Halle Berry, J. Lo, or George Clooney. They're all fat and wrinkled.
by Anonymous | reply 393 | August 12, 2020 2:09 AM |
I always wonder why wealthy celebs and musicians always manage to find the world’s worst plastic surgeons. I know a few people who had nose jobs, their noses look fantastic. How do I know they had nose jobs, I’ve known these people since we were kids. Their noses look normal, most don't even look like they've had nose jobs.
When a celeb’s nose looks bigger after a nose job, like Melanie Griffith whose natural nose was pert and small, you just know there was heavy duty cocaine use involved. Their nose jobs look like they were in a fight with Mike Tyson!
Another problem with these celebs, they try to hold on to a fashion style or hairstyle they wore in they 20s and 30s. They don't realize how silly they look. The women keep their hair too long and they continue to be brunette, few can pull this off, maybe Demi Moore, she still looks good with the long dark hair.
All dark hair does on a wrinkly faced person is make them look much older. The crispy yellow blond hair doesn't help either, if they were natural blonds, an ash color might work. Brassy blond shades are also very aging. White or grey hair with some random dark areas actually works on people with olive and dark complexions.
These aging celebs need honest people in their lives to tell them the truth, unfortunately they surround themselves with sycophants.

It might depend where you live, I'm on the East Coast, most of my older friends and family members sure don't look like pot bellied MAGATS at a Dump rally, so that might explain things. The fattest person I knew was, ironically, a nurse. She died from MS. I actually don't know any fat people. Especially not in the field I work in.
A friend and her husband once traveled through the Midwest by car, they couldn't believe how fat people were, I laughed when she told me, "Even their dogs are fat!"

LESLEY ANN WARREN. In 1965 the television version of Cinderella was a VERY big deal. It starred Lesley Ann Warren, who was 18 at the time, aired on CBS on George Washington's birthday, Monday, February. 22. (Washington's birthday, Feb 22, was a federal holiday at the time. It happened to be a Monday that year, but we didn't have Presidents' Day of Monday holidays at the time, and we celebrated Washington's birthday on whichever day of the week the 22nd fell.)
Cinderella was rebroadcast eight times through February 1974. The 1965 debut had a Nielsen rating of 42.3, making it the highest-rated non-sports special on CBS from the beginning of the Nielsen ratings until 2009, and the 50th highest-rated show of any kind during that period.
JULIE ANDREWS. The original television version of Cinderella starred Julie Andrews at 21 years old. It aired on Sunday, March 31, 1957, at 8:00pm Eastern time, Cinderella was broadcast live in the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones in both black and white and compatible color; the West Coast received a delayed black and white-only broadcast starting at 8:00pm Pacific time. Beyond the United States, it was carried by CBS affiliates in the U.S. territories of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico; in Canada it was broadcast on CBC. It was produced for $376,000 and was heavily promoted by its sponsors Pepsi-Cola and the Shulton Company (then maker of Old Spice). The Nielsen TV rating for the program was 18,864,000 "homes reached during an average minute" of the broadcast. More than 107 million viewers saw the broadcast, and Andrews was nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance.

Maybe for some but not for all. If you believe what you are saying, it means all the celebs in this thread have bad genes?! Too funny.
These celebs likely overindulged. After their careers tanked, they probably stopped exercising or basically stopped caring about everything relating to their looks and health. The celebs who have bad genes obviously look worse than the others.
I have an old friend I saw a few years ago, he worked in a creative field and was a fashion model on the side. He's aged terribly, I was shocked. He was always a heavy drinker and did recreational drugs, he gained a ton of weight. His brother, who is at least 10 years older than he is, looks terrific. The brother never drank, smoked or did drugs.
by Anonymous | reply 398 | August 12, 2020 2:32 AM |
There really aren’t rules, rhyme or reason to why some people age badly and some don’t. A woman I have known since she was 12 was very beautiful but then aged rapidly in her late 30’s and now has the deep wrinkles of someone 20 years older at least. She is also saggy while still being thin. She is and has always been a clean living strict Christian who never drank, smoke or did drugs.

I also work in a creative field, fashion promotion, most of the women I meet are near anorexic. The men are in shape and into fashion as much as the women. R512 It’s understandable.

Candice looks great.

Agh! Jude looks like Randy Quaid in that pic

Seriously R6, Catherine O'Hara is almost unrecognizable. She turned 66 in March.
Looks closer to 76, if not 80.

Catherine O'Hara looks like a burn victim died and the face was transplanted onto her head.

I don't think O'Hara looks bad

There is no winning here. If you have plastic surgery you look terrible and if you don't have plastic surgery you look terrible. Catherine O'Hara looks fine. I always thought she was a tall woman and was surprised to find out she is just 5'4"

Love Geraldine Chaplin. Such a beautiful, elegant woman. I don't think she looks bad at all but some basic plastic surgery like a neck lift, and a better hairstyle and colour would do wonders.

Kate Pierson looks pretty good. She's 72! There was a recent article about Kate and her wife, Monica Coleman, in The NY Times. They live upstate NY.

Speaking of Kate Pierson, Kate and Catherine O'Hara kind of look alike. Catherine should have done a B-52s parody on Second City.
I LOVED Catherine as Lola Heatherthon AKA Joey Heatherton

Kate’s wife sounds like a total bitch in that article.

R521, once you're over a certain age, plastic surgery looks like ill-wrapped Saran Wrap over a bowl. Geraldine Chaplin is 76 years old, it's not gonna work. I thought she looked dreadful in her 30s, like she was anorexic. It ages one very rapidly.

Geraldine Chaplin and Zoe Wanamaker are two actresses with distinctive and unique faces.

r523 Don't forget that smidge of Lola Falana in the mix.

I feel badly looking at some of these pics - they look like they are at trade shows and so happy to have their pic taken.
by Anonymous | reply 528 | August 24, 2020 9:33 PM |
Don't feel too bad. Those trade shows are usually good money for the actors. They can make more in a weekend than they could from doing a movie or two, especially if they're really popular and have a lot of fans.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
