'Flash Gordon' at 40: Brian Blessed will kill anyone who tries to remake the cult classic!

Flash Gordon star Brian Blessed says he will personally hunt down anyone who tries to remake Mike Hodges’ 1980 sci-fi classic, and murder them.

Talking to Yahoo as the film enjoys its 40th anniversary and a flashy 4K remaster, Blessed thunders: “They must never, never ever try to make a remake! I’ll kill them!”

“They must never do it. The more you see [Flash Gordon], you see more and more in the film: the lighting, the music, the performances... it’s perfection. They mustn’t try and bring it back in a different way, a more sinister way and this that, and the other, no, no, no, no, no.”

He says the film is “the finest science fiction movie that has ever been made.”

The outspoken 83-year-old, who plays Hawkmen leader Prince Vultan, adds that he was approached to appear in a remake as a hawkman “tearing people to pieces”.

“I told them to eff off, go away,” he adds.

Inspired by Alex Raymond’s space opera adventure comic strip first published in 1934, the 1980 film is just one of many adaptations of the source material. A film reboot has been bouncing round Hollywood for a number of years with The King’s Man director Matthew Vaughn linked with a new version at 20th Century Fox.

Sam J Jones, who played the title role in the 1980 film, revealed that he’d initially been signed up to make six Flash Gordon films, saying the sequel would have headed to Mars.

I really loved this movie!

The guy who played flash was so hot, and I loved "Ming the Merciless."

I love the Queen song.

And yet he was totally cool with letting Judi Dench play his role in CATS.

by Anonymousreply 3August 6, 2020 1:08 AM

Brian Blessed is a foul-mouthed, loud, vulgarian, potty-mouthed, noisy drunk.

by Anonymousreply 4August 6, 2020 1:09 AM

I love that stupid movie!

No film has ever demonstrated the huge difference between a fun movie, and a good movie.

by Anonymousreply 5August 6, 2020 1:09 AM

Yes, R2!

That song was so fucking awesome.

Flash! Ah ah! Lol

by Anonymousreply 6August 6, 2020 1:11 AM

Sam Jones was hot.

Wow, nice R7!

Where'd you find that? lol

by Anonymousreply 8August 6, 2020 1:16 AM

too bad sam jones posed for PLAYGIRL when they had their "no boners/erections/hard-ons" ban...

by Anonymousreply 9August 6, 2020 1:17 AM

Sam had a beautiful straight nose. And I guess he is straight and also keen to make our nation great again.

by Anonymousreply 10August 7, 2020 1:58 AM

Blessed indeed.

Okay, this is one of the few pieces of in-person gossip I ever heard... back in the 1990;s...

Some guy knew some guy who'd met this guy who'd once been an actor, and that guy said that there had been two finalists for the much -coveted role of Flash Gordon, himself, and Jones. And that he'd refused to fuck the producer and Jones had agreed, and that's what got Jones the part.

by Anonymousreply 12August 7, 2020 2:29 AM

^ Sounds dubious to say the least.

by Anonymousreply 13August 7, 2020 2:31 AM

Paging Tom Cruise.

by Anonymousreply 14August 7, 2020 2:34 AM

All gossip is dubious, R13, that's why we call it "gossip" instead of "facts".

Uh huh. Of course you were.

by Anonymousreply 16August 7, 2020 3:19 AM

Hot.. Too bad he's been mutilated. Look at that scar.

by Anonymousreply 17August 7, 2020 3:31 AM

R13 You've lived a very sheltered life to say the least.

by Anonymousreply 18August 7, 2020 10:07 PM

I wonder how Blessed would react if somebody suggested an “I Claudius” remake?

by Anonymousreply 19August 7, 2020 11:36 PM

Jones was dubbed.

by Anonymousreply 20August 7, 2020 11:40 PM

My dad was way into this movie....

by Anonymousreply 21August 7, 2020 11:47 PM

Yes! Sam! Tim! Max! Ornella! Queen!

by Anonymousreply 22August 8, 2020 12:27 AM

"Flash, Flash, I LOVE YOU! But you only have 14 inches to move the earth!"

by Anonymousreply 23August 8, 2020 12:34 AM

R16 it’s true. I watched the documentary about Sam J Jones. The film flopped - so it was moot. He thought he was a star & refused to do voice overs & reshoots for flash, got into drugs - ended up in the B movie /straight to video market. He does well in the autograph convention circuit. He’s born again. There’s a documentary about him that i thought would be camp but was another beaten by hollywood thing.

by Anonymousreply 24August 8, 2020 12:52 AM

Was 'Flash Gordon' made in Italy?

by Anonymousreply 25August 8, 2020 1:15 AM

[quote] My dad was way into this movie....

*raising an eyebrow* at R21's dad.

by Anonymousreply 26August 8, 2020 1:15 AM

Who can forget Princess Aura, played by Italian exotic beauty Ornella Muti!

^ De Laurentiis filled his supporting cast with too many good actors who overshadowed the weak leading actors.

by Anonymousreply 30August 8, 2020 1:44 AM

He liked The Ice Pirates too, R26. I think he was just into that weird Saturday matinee kind of stuff.

by Anonymousreply 31August 8, 2020 3:07 AM

R31 The OTT costumes? Or the dashing leading men?

by Anonymousreply 32August 8, 2020 3:27 AM

Mostly with Flash it was the theme song, he would break out into the song. Maybe you guys are onto something....

by Anonymousreply 33August 8, 2020 3:34 AM

Mon Dieu, I have vivid memories of seeing Flash Gordon at a movie theatre in San Diego (Loma Theatre in Point Loma) as a kid!

I cannot believe that took place forty years ago!!!

by Anonymousreply 34August 8, 2020 3:45 AM

Sam's "career" literally ended right after it began! Blink and you missed it. So he gets his start in "10" (1979) an unexpectedly huge blockbuster for the time and then he tanks Flash Gordon in 1980 and basically goes straight to video after that? He clearly didn't give up good head and ass.

by Anonymousreply 35August 8, 2020 3:58 AM

The documentary covers how he basically walked off the film and was dubbed by another actor. One presumes the word got around.

by Anonymousreply 36August 8, 2020 4:02 AM

Brian Blessed can park his winged sandals under my bed any time.

by Anonymousreply 37August 8, 2020 6:07 AM

R28 in his other great role. You’re joking right?

by Anonymousreply 38August 8, 2020 6:13 AM

That 'other great role' was Max Von Sydow's biggest role in a mainstream film. He wasted his talents too frequently in supporting roles in rubbish.

by Anonymousreply 39August 8, 2020 6:18 AM

^ Like The Exocrist, Pele The Conquerer, Hannah and her Sisters, The Seventh Seal.

by Anonymousreply 40August 8, 2020 6:24 AM

Pelle, not Pele (the former soccer player).

by Anonymousreply 41August 8, 2020 6:35 AM

Max also starred in 'Pele'!, a musical based on the life of Pele, the footballer. His tap routine down the pitch is the stuff of legend.

by Anonymousreply 42August 8, 2020 7:16 AM

[quote]Talking to Yahoo as the film enjoys its 40th anniversary and a flashy 4K remaster

I thought I'd stream this from Amazon over the weekend, but they only have a dubious quality SD transfer available. If my experience with their other SD offerings holds true, it was transferred decades ago using the 480i broadcast cine scanners of the time, which were awful.

by Anonymousreply 43August 8, 2020 7:30 AM

Flesh Gordon was better.

by Anonymousreply 44August 8, 2020 7:40 AM

R44 was right, Flesh Gordon was better and campier.
