1) This is a sad one. It was told to me by a pal who was close to an elderly man who during his prime, used to work in Hollywood. He worked in the wardrobe/costume department and was assigned to work on a movie starring Marilyn Monroe. Now, this man was gay and it was apparent to everyone in the industry he was gay (without being "out"--this was the 1950s). Just want to make that clear. So he makes an appointment to meet with Marilyn to go over costuming choices for the movie. Marilyn shows up and they go through the wardrobe-- at least he thought they were going to go over wardrobe choices. Because then without any provocation from his part, mind you, he's gay and people knew that about him, Marilyn accosts him right there. (She did this even though she, too, knew his sexuality). He declined her advances but felt really sorry for her because it was clear to him she thought using her sexuality was just a way to form any kind of relationship, even work-related, in Hollywood. It was like, other than her body, she didn't think she had anything of value to offer people.

2) An acquaintance of mine (who was very close to a old friend) worked on a movie that was an entrant in the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. The acquaintance co-wrote the movie, a sweet, old-fashioned love story. He really was very invested in this movie, which was a big break for him and had a lot of hope for it. Unfortunately for him, Sean Penn was president of the jury that year and to give you an ideal of what a friggin tool he is, Penn let it be known that he was only going to award movies that were political, nothing else--just political movies. The acquaintance and the people behind this movie were very disappointed.

The director was prepared to die on the hill of those particular egg rolls even though there were vegan restaurants that could deliver spring rolls within a half hour.
