Early 2000’s

The most iconic time in pop culture?

Didn't all three of those whores in OP pics have a police record?

by Anonymousreply 3August 2, 2020 9:28 PM

The 2000s was the first postmodern decade. It was the beginning of when the internet, technology, social media and the 24/7 news cycle really taking over our lives and the distinction between myth and reality became even more blurred.

That said, celebrity culture at that time was wild, it seemed prior to the 2000s, celebrities had this image of perfection and untouchability. But then we got Britney's breakdown, Lindsay's drug and partying habits, Paris and Nicole becoming famous for being famous, Mary-Kate and Ashley's anorexia and drug problems, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston's drug and mental health problems being on display and the beginning of celebrity reality TV shows like The Osbournes, Newlyweds and Being Bobby Brown. Seems like such a paradigm shift

by Anonymousreply 4August 2, 2020 9:36 PM

If we're talking about pop culture in general and not just Hollywood, the 1990s was much more exciting. You had the OJ trial, Monica Lewinsky, Lorena Bobbitt, Amy Fisher, the LA riots, Mary Kay Letourneau, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love...the list goes on. What a time to be alive!

by Anonymousreply 5August 2, 2020 9:54 PM

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm genuinely missing the early 2000s right now. Anything to escape from this shit show of a year.

by Anonymousreply 6August 2, 2020 10:15 PM

But was it a good time for Gap playlists???

by Anonymousreply 7August 2, 2020 10:17 PM

[quote] it seemed prior to the 2000s, celebrities had this image of perfection and untouchability.

I disagree with this. Maybe it's just that you were very young before the 2000s and weren't aware of what a mess so many celebrities were. Are you a young 'un?

by Anonymousreply 8August 2, 2020 10:19 PM

R8 It was the rise of celebrity gossip blogs like Perez, TMZ, D Listed, Lainey

by Anonymousreply 9August 2, 2020 10:33 PM

Yeah exactly. It was the rise of the internet, cable TV channels like E and VH1 and the 24/7 news cycle that really broadcasted the craziness of certain celebrities to a new level and planted it deeper into everyone's consciousness. Obviously, they were hot messes prior to the 2000s like everything about Michael Jackson, Sinead O'Connor, Drew Barrymore, George Michael just to name a few. But in some ways, the press seemed far less intrusive of people's lives then and also people had far more sense of shame to go to press to tell about some fucked up thing a famous/powerful person did.

R11 I can't believe Lindsay and Hilary fought over Aaron Carter of all people. They both costarred in movies with Chad Michael Murray (Freaky Friday, A Cinderella Story) who is much hotter than Aaron, though to be fair CMM was an adult and Hilary and Lindsay were still teens.

Also Megan Fox was always playing queen bees in early 2000s movies. She played a mean girl in an Olsen twins movie "Holiday in the Sun", a mean girl in a Lindsay Lohan movie "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen", a mean girl in a Kaley Cuoco movie "Crimes of Fashion" and she also played a bit character in an episode of Amanda Bynes' sitcom "What I Like About You". She also dated David Gallagher, the cute blonde pretty boy son on 7th Heaven.

Out of all these people, Hilary aged the best and turned out the most normal despite being shady and probably had some drug abuse but all that's in the past.

The Olsen twins were actually pretty when they were teenagers. I never found them cute as little kids but they grew into looks in adolescence but unfortunately the drugs and eating disorders....

All three of those skanks should have gone to college. Lindsay really lost her looks.

by Anonymousreply 13August 2, 2020 11:24 PM

Amanda Bynes like Britney is mentally ill and like the Olsens probably traumatized by the showbiz to ever return. She was such a great comedic actress. Her IG posts are so sad because you can tell she's dead inside and heavily medicated.

Early 2000's what?

by Anonymousreply 17August 2, 2020 11:30 PM

I guess not because no one remembers these people anymore since they weren't known for anything except being famous for 15 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 18August 2, 2020 11:33 PM

Who would have thought Bryan Cranston (Hal the dad) would have had the biggest career out of this whole show. Jane, Frankie and Justin were all amazing comedic talent but at least this show ran a good run and set them for life.

I couldn't agree more, r6.

I was simultaneously hood and punk as fuck in the early 2000s, a thug, an underage bride and a teenage fashion icon.

(Even more fantastic now, no tattoos, no regrettable plastic surgeries and I'm not jaded. But the early aughts were incredible for me. Almost as good as the early nineties.

You're right about the pop culture. Otherwise, though, the Bush era was somewhat of a dark time, culturally and socially.

by Anonymousreply 23August 2, 2020 11:45 PM

R7, of course it was a great era for Gap Playlists!

Not really, OP. Things already felt like they were in a trashy spiral.

by Anonymousreply 37August 3, 2020 4:49 AM

Don’t forget Grokster!

by Anonymousreply 38August 3, 2020 10:01 AM

The early 2000s (well the year 2001) was the time when Brad Renfro's career at playing leads came to a halt due to his drug abuse and erratic behavior which got him stuck only playing bit roles. Even though Bully is technically a period piece of the early 90s, it took so much liberty it felt more reflective of the early 00s.

I miss checking on my downloads-in-progress as a cozy memory of that time period.

by Anonymousreply 41August 3, 2020 5:38 PM

R41, lol, yes, it completely defeated the purpose of Napster in the first place. I had dialup internet until I was 18 and I remember it took like 20 or 30 minutes for a song to download. And downloading full-length porn movies took days lol.

r4 Do you think the fixation on Paris and Nicole was a catalyst in letting the Kardashians run wild?

by Anonymousreply 46August 3, 2020 6:43 PM

Not R4 here but yes, they laid the groundwork for the Kardashians. I can't believe that rat family has been on the air for 13 years now. That's longer than even shows like Seinfeld!

by Anonymousreply 47August 3, 2020 6:46 PM

I don't even follow keeping up with the Kardashians closely, but from what I can tell, the network keeps playing the same eight episodes over and over again. Those 8 repeat episodes were filmed over a span of 12 years on E! and replayed in a very circular fashion.

by Anonymousreply 48August 3, 2020 10:02 PM

R1, if you think that’s amazing, wait till you see them getting out of the car!

by Anonymousreply 49August 3, 2020 10:16 PM

Before the Kardashians became famous, I always thought the valley girl accent was completely fake and for TV and movies. But nope the Kartrashians straight up sound like those bitchy popular girls in cartoons.

by Anonymousreply 50August 3, 2020 10:17 PM

R50, I live in Chicago. You can hear that accent everywhere. Not most girls, but MANY girls here talk like that. And that's before the Kardashians showed up. Hell, many gay men talk like that.

by Anonymousreply 51August 3, 2020 10:38 PM

R51 I do hear it a lot in college aged people (male and female) and other gay people mainly that vocal fry affection and uptalk. I'm from NJ.

Some people will say the Kardashians have a California accent but nobody I met from California sounds like that.

by Anonymousreply 52August 3, 2020 10:48 PM

[quote] Anyone remember Kazaa and Limewire? Those were the days.

Those same songs would sound terrible from those but almost as good as a CD when played back on YouTube, so the audio quality is movin’ on up.

by Anonymousreply 53August 3, 2020 11:00 PM

Noah Knows Best is probably the most obscure Nickcom in existence. It only ran for a few months in 2000. To be fair it was dry and unfunny as hell.

But Hanson made a guest appearance during their commercial peak in 2000 with This Time Around. After that album Taylor knocked up a fangirl and married her and they left their label to form their own and been independent ever since.

Not an American, but I thought this⬇️ was a typical Cali accent. Sort of dopey and drawled, dragging all the words out too much but not necessarily uptalking (but still using too many needless qualifiers such as “like I knoooooooow right?”)

R62, it is more associated with Southern California (specifically the LA area) than with the rest of the state. My friend from LA says you meet tons of valley girls in the LA area and they are everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 65August 4, 2020 7:18 PM

California is a huge state. I do think there is a California accent though. It's more they talk flat, speak slow and drawl out words. Also the slang like "hella" and "The 405".

The Southern California accent does have a nasally drawled out twang sound to it and the Valley/Surfer accent is just an over-exaggeration of it.

White Californians from the Central Valley may sound a bit Southern-ish due to being descended from Okies that came during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl.

Black Californians also have Southern-sounding accents since many originated from Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma and they were among the last Black people to migrate during the Great Migration of the 20th century.

Chicanos also have their own accent and may speak Spanglish.

The Olsen Twins sitcom "So Little Time" was corny and cringey but it was a good time capsule for the early 2000s with the pop-punk/pop rock song selection, fashion choices, pop culture references to Legally Blonde, Go-gurt, Jennifer Aniston and the twins crush on Josh Hartnett.

Raven served some 2000s looks though those it seems those style choices were Disney's and not her own. I think she prefers tomboyish, artsy-fartsy and boho style stuff which is why she dresses like she does now. They were probably trying to push her as a "black Hilary"

Grounded for Life was such an underrated hilarious show. It barely survived throughout its original 5-year run but it's one of the more realistic depictions of a working-class family with immature parents who got pregnant and married too early. Uncle Eddie was hilarious. Also I feel bad for Bret Harrison who played Brad. He is cute and very funny. R111 I wouldn't mind seeing Alba in movies again either. She isn't a great actress but she is good in action roles like Saldana, Jolie and Johannson.

by Anonymousreply 115August 8, 2020 6:56 AM

R113 They definitely are over Hollywood too. I don't think they even interact or try to reach out to any of their former co-stars either which is unusual. They completely cut themselves off from the acting world. Mary-Kate was still doing some films on and off until like 2011 but stopped. It's kinda creepy watching them act as toddlers and preteens in those sing-a-long and direct-to-video movies because their deliveries were so robotic and overtly cutesy. They weren't natural actresses and it's clear they were being overworked. On Full House, they were basically trained animals that mimicked what some lady mimed to them across the set. They didn't return to Full House because they were so young on that show and had no emotional attachment to it.

They did improve as they got older in Two of a Kind and So Little Time and their later movies because those were more tongue-in-cheek and their deadpan and sarcastic deliveries worked well. New York Minute was probably their best movie because they stopped taking themselves seriously and had a lot of fun and it flopped. They were burnt out from working nonstop for 18 years and knew they would never get taken seriously by Hollywood anyway, so quitting and cashing in that money was smart. But having that much pressure to perform and be perfect likely was traumatizing and cause their eating disorders and drug addiction which are both outcomes of neurosis.

by Anonymousreply 116August 8, 2020 7:06 AM

R115 Alba seems more focused on her beauty line with Honest. I can't see her wanting to work with Michael or Jensen again. May as well just reboot with a new transgenic.

Decades mean nothing. Look at the 60's for instance. You start the 60's with Frankie Avalon and the Marvelettes, move to pop crap and end with acid rock... move to the 70's and you're still in acid rock but trending into metal then disco. These decades are not really decades at all. Trends can be around for 5-7 years and morph into a completely different style. The clothing all follows suit with the music. It's an ever evolving circus. I have never accepted the idea that a decade meant a damn thing other than a designated period of time, rather than style or trend. I realize this shit every time I pick a "Decade" to listen to as background music from my cable station. I put on 80's and think, 'wtf, this is not the shit I thought they would play. I think I'm in a bad mood today. Maybe I need some 1967 pot to mellow out.

by Anonymousreply 120August 9, 2020 3:44 AM

R120 Good point. Way too much overlap of trends and styles to contain without any given decade and also the fact trends come in cycles. Disco still lasted until the very early 80s. New Jack Swing was a music movement that went from late 80s to early even mid-90s. Pictures of the early 1960s often gets mistaken for the 1950s. Jazz itself had so many different movements that jazzheads are divided by specific years rather than decades. The early 2000s and late 2000s seemed completely different too.

No, OP. There was nothing iconic about this decade or any decade after the 1980s. So much crap from this century has been so cheap and ephemeral that it’s really a crime.

R122 Nirvana, Alice in Chains and REM changing the rock scene. A Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde, Biggie and the Golden Age of Rap. Fiona Apple, Paula Cole, Alanis Morrisette and other female alternative pop artists. Boyz II Men, Aaliyah, Xscape, TLC, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey and Usher ushering the biggest decade of R&B dominating the charts. Erykah Badu, Maxwell, D'Angelo and Lauryn with the Neo-Soul movement. Hanson, Savage Garden, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC basically reviving the boy band genre. Robyn, Spice Girls, Britney, Christina and Destiny's Child reviving bubblegum pop and girl power groups. British bands like Coldplay and Oasis building up a fanbase in the US. Nu-metal bands like Korn. Eminem being the biggest white rapper. Then the British trip hop scene with Massive Attack. 90s had a lot of impact at least musically.

Ya lost me after Nirvana.

by Anonymousreply 124August 9, 2020 4:56 AM

R124, I personally can't stand Nirvana or Kurt Cobain, but there is no doubt the impact they had.

[quote]90s had a lot of impact at least musically.

And most of it was disastrous.

There is serious nostalgia for the late 90s and early 2000s look and sound now. It's funny because it seemed by the mid-2000s, we were all embarrassed by that era and wanted to forget it. But I guess since late 2010s and the first year of 2020s has been utter shit, people want to be nostalgic for the campy, flashy and playfully artificial era of late 90s/2000s.

Rina Sawayama, Dawn Richard, Carly Rae Jepson, Conan Gray, Ariana Grande and Normani all seem to be wanting to bring the teen dance-pop era that died out in 2002.

by Anonymousreply 128September 16, 2020 1:08 AM

OP, that wasn’t early 2000’s - that was 2007, so late 2000’s.

Lindsay and Britney can still be associated with the early 2000s because of their peaks. Paris didn't get big until the mid-2000s after 2003. Most people would agree that the atmosphere changed drastically after 9/11 and by the end of 2002 that the 90s pop culture hanger-ons began dying out.

I've been experiencing some odd nostalgia for this time period as well. I was 12 in 2000 and, just like a real shit of a kid, I thought I was above the culture of this era. I've been rewatching some of the movies and TV from this time period and a lot of it has held up really well. Maybe we were on to something then.

One thing I do miss about the early 2000s was the internet. Yeah the speeds were slow, dial-up sucked ass and downloads took forever. But the old world wide web was a lot more for the nerds and different subcultures and niches. There was an air of mystery and fun about the internet back then.

I'm pretty sure I had a slight influence at the turn of the century.

R133 Can't forget about the Latin explosion. Ricky, Enrique, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Christina Aguilera, Pitbull and Selena (posthumously) all hoped on that train.

by Anonymousreply 134September 16, 2020 2:39 AM

That's what I implied by "influence," r134.

by Anonymousreply 135September 16, 2020 2:57 AM

The adjective "slight" was humor.

by Anonymousreply 136September 16, 2020 2:59 AM

No, certainly not.

[Quote] Ariana Grande and Normani all seem to be wanting to bring the teen dance-pop era that died out in 2002.

Is Normani still a thing??

Hilary Duff, Cheetah Girls, Jesse McCartney, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Bros and the rest of Disney pop stars were created to be child friendly teen pop stars after the sexualized teen pop era of the late 90s/early 2000s. Britney, Xtina and Destiny's Child mixed wholesome with sexy. Backstreet and NSYNC were singing words like "cowboy", "sexual" and "let's get down". Brandy, Monica, Usher, B2K, Bow Wow and Aaliyah were sexual too. Even Aaron Carter had songs like "Little Crazy Party Girl" and "I Want Candy" and his music videos had him paired with older girls.
