Celebrities you're surprised are still alive
I'm surprised that Nancy Olson (Betty in Sunset Boulevard) is still alive, while the rest of the cast is long gone. I suppose it's not surprising given the age difference between her and everyone else in the film, but still ... the film featured several people associated with the silent era. I guess this makes it more impressive to me.
Another surprise is jazz vocalist Helen Merrill, for similar reasons. She got her start in the 1950s and recorded with, eg, Clifford Brown, whom I associate with an earlier (and long gone) generation of jazz musicians.

Sad that she's had to bury two of her three children. I would never want to live to be that old. She's essentially the only one left of her generation.
My grandmother lived to be 102. She had seven siblings (close-knit Italian family) and her last sibling died over ten years before her. She was the only one left, and it was very lonely for her.

I like the "six degrees" type of connections that great age makes possible. Olson did not appear in the scene with Keaton, Nilsson, Warner, and Swanson but she's connected to that era by virtue of being in the film. The "waxworks" in a way to connect Olson to very early film history. I always hope that young people are wise enough to listen to their elderly family members to get stories.
Similarly, Prince Charles' great-grandmother Queen Mary was the great-granddaughter of King George III. I know it sounds weird, but I always wonder if P Charles remembers Q Mary telling him stories of the royal family that she knew as a child.

I think Janis Paige doesn't get enough love. She was one of Fred's great dance partners. Ginger was elegant, Rita was ravishing, but when Janis did Stereophonic Sound (from Silk Stockings) with him she kept up and spurred him on. I don't love the late '50s choreography generally as it's trying to incorporate Fosse-like moves (without Fosse).

R237, Robert Clary came to my junior high school back in the 1980s to speak about the Holocaust (he survived Buchenwald), and presented a graphic documentary that made my stomach turn and gave me nightmares for weeks. I got his autograph, but not being a Hogan's Heroes fan (my sister watched the reruns all the time), and considering the circumstances of our interaction, it wasn't exactly a thrill. Nevertheless, I'm surprised he's still alive, and good for him for having a long life despite that horror of an experience.

Just like one would with any evil force in the world. Trump can't be reasoned with, he is beyond repair, and with his evil nature just pulls everything down with him. The other politicians mentioned aren't like that. Anyone who can't see that at this point needs to check their moral compass, their is something wrong with it if they can't see the difference.

Back to Nancy Olson. . .In 1974 I was a lovely and precocious 18 yr. old living in the guest house of writer/actor George Furth. He was working on the movie "Airport 75" with Ms. Olson. In spite of his own success as a writer ( "Company"), George was a big name-dropper and mentioned her name in passing, not thinking I'd know who she was. Of course, I knew who she was! He went on to tell me she thought she had been forgotten by my generation. Turns out Ms. Olson maintained her figure by avoiding the craft table on set in favor of her homemade Endive salad. She gave George a taste and told him to give her a call if he wanted the recipe. Using this recipe as an excuse George called her and handed the phone off to me, telling her I was his cook. She relayed the recipe (torn not chopped endive leaves and crushed cranberries, as I recall) in under 5 min. and we spent the next hour talking about the making of Sunset Blvd. Thus a tentative friendship was born. George took me to the "Airport 75" set to meet her. She in turn invited me to go with her to a party at Rudi Gernrichs house. Unbeknownst to me, she had spoken to Mr. Gernrich about me, thinking I would be the "exotic" model type he was in search of for his "unisex" line of clothes. Thus a short and not very profitable side-carrier was born. My budding friendship with Ms. Olsen came to a screeching halt when she tried to push her newfound fellowship in the Church of Scientology on me. An intelligent, naive, and sophisticated lady of many contradictions, I believe the secret of Ms. Olsons longevity is Endive Salad, two homosexual husbands and genetics.

Her character Rebecca was killed off on DALLAS. I hated to see her go, but I could see why. As Cliff's mother (and Pam's) she was JR's greatest adversary and the wealth she inherited from Herbert Wentworth made her a formidable foe.

More infamous than famous, Sara Jane Moore, the crazy woman who fired a shot at President Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco in 1975 is still alive and turns 90 on 2/15.
Sad footnote: Oliver Sipple, the former Marine who deflected her shot and quite possibly saved Ford's life was later outed by columnist Herb Caen, which caused a period of estrangement between Sipple and his family. He suffered from schizophrenia and drank heavily and, in 1989 was found dead in his San Francisco apartment, with a bottle of Jack Daniel's next to him and the television still on. He was only 47.

Not sure if you'd consider him a celebrity, but every eldergay who twirled a parasol and wanted to be Ann Marie has Bill Persky to thank (he also wrote the iconic "That's My Boy" and "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" episodes of the DICK VAN DYKE SHOW).
I listened to him on Judy Gold's podcast from 2017 and was pleased to see he's still kicking at 89

Joey Heatherton.
Go ahead and forget her bitches, but she brought the heat in the 70's--and for some reason--the TV sensors let her. Look at this.
A powerful performer ahead of her time.

What's more surprising to me is that Jerry Lee Lewis is only 85.
If someone had asked me, I would have guessed he was nearing 100.

He's helming a Disco Cruise with an astonishing lineup of disco era acts.

R523, I think she would have been better as a recast Miss Ellie than Donna Reed was.
She had done a turn as Lloyd Bridges' wife on Paper Dolls, which strangely only ran for 13 episodes on ABC.
It had so much going for it -- glizty nighttime soap shot on location (it looked) in New York City; modeling agency; conglomerate - Harper Worldwide; attractive folks; strong matriarchs -- Brenda "I Love Tampons!" Vaccaro, a pre-KNOTS Nichollette Sheridan, Dack Rambo in his prime, and Morgan Fairchild at her bitch-tastic finest.

Until I read about a new documentary in today's paper, I had no idea Doc Severinsen was still alive. He's 93.
He's the the last surviving 'cast member' of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (although Carson's oft-spoken-of-but-never-seen attorney Henry 'Bombastic' Bushkin appears to still be alive). Carson, Ed McMahon, Tommy Newsom, and Fred de Cordova are all dead.

Biff McGuire just died at 94. He was in the original production of SOUTH PACIFIC.
I guess we can add Betta St John (Liat) who is 91 and Barbara Luna (Ngana) who is 82 to the list. Frankly, I'm surprised anyone from that show is still alive - it opened 72 years ago this week, April 7, 1949.

I just saw an ad for DOROT, an organization which helps old people. They're annual benefit this year is on June 3. Special guest is Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who coincidentally turns 93 the next day. Since it's virtual, I guess she doesn't have to get dressed up and leave the house, but one presumes she's at least coherent.
Host for the evening is handsome Ari Melber

I'm with r527 (and glad this thread is still open). I was thinking about Bob Newhart last night and was surprised to see he's still alive.
Everyone looked so old on 1970s television, especially the men. Ed Asher, Ted Knight, Carroll O'Connor, Bob Newhart, etc.

[quote] "Anthony Zerbe"
He's done tons of stuff, but the two things I remember him from are from my childhood: "See No Evil, Hear No Evil", where he played a blind supervillain, and an episode of "Highway To Heaven" where he played a bookstore owner who was also a disciple of Satan (who also makes an appearance).
Zerbe plays creepy/evil very well.
