I’ve mentioned it before — it’s not easy to talk nonstop for hours at a time. A friend of my husband’s was a radio host for years. Aside from having a radio voice, he had the ability to talk without ever saying “umm”” “errrrr,” “like,” or any other filler words. His voice was clear, crisp & he had no regional accent. You would’ve thought he was college educated, but he was a high school dropout who lied on applications & said he graduated from his private high school. He went to the school on the matchbook covers ....Columbia School of Broadcasting (which had nothing to do with Columbia university). He was adored by his fans who would do anything for him. He also spent every cent he made and more & he went totally broke when his show was cancelled.

Look at Trump. He speaks in word salad and *mesmerizes* half of this country. He’s got a 50 history of lying, cheating, stealing & sexually assaulting women. They don’t care. He talks. And talks. When he flubs a word, he just goes on as if nothing happened. He’s a game show host. People will literally die for him.

Haven’t we learned that America long ago mowed its amber waves of grain & replaced it with a superhighway, a mall & a parking lot? And people are fine with it.

That’s why someone like Joe Rogan is popular.

I think he is a genuinely curious person and a very good conversationalist, as stated upthread. He’s willing to talk to people who others eschew for fear of damaging their reputations or being canceled. There aren’t other mainstream podcasters with his wide array of guests.

Most of the US is middle-of-the-road than extreme, and he speaks to that. Average white guys like to hear him because he’s one of them and doesn’t posit himself as superior to them, despite hundred million-dollar deals.

I have seldom listened to him since his comments about voting for Trump absent a Sanders option, but I’ll admit that some of his shows have entertained me.

He’s not really a “straight ahead talk radio host” though.

He *is* also a stand up comedian who has toured with major acts (including Dave Chapelle), so I think some of the “outrageous commentary” type stuff that people quoted upthread may be from being a stand up comedian and not really be his straight ahead commentary on things.

He had also done at least one comedy album too (his comedy style is definitely not my style of comedy, but anyway...) and has active stand ups on his show—big and small—all the time, to promote them.

I get a sense from several of of the interviews I’ve seen him do with comics that his show is a big deal venue for them to promote themselves and they even “talk shop” with him about comedy and the touring circuit on his show.

They also all seen to say crazy things and curse words every time they’re on—and I see this on YouTube, so it seems to be a weird stand up thing with him too (his comments and language—he basically sounds as “outrageous” and curse laden as the comics are every time he has one on, and I don’t pretend to understand that world at all—although I do enjoy stand up comedy in general; even “Mrs. Maisel” on Amazon ;)

I’ve told oldtimer Dataloungers this story for years. My husband’s best friend from high school was a lowdown schnook. His father was a lawyer who made a good living & spent all their money. The mother was sick with cancer at the time that the father spent all the money. He spent it on anything. Gambling, expensive clothes, cars, big house, sex. He became a heroin addict. Then in the 80s he moved south & made a huge amount of money in “the real estate market.” He became rich again. Much richer than he’d been before. But he was still a spendthrift. He died of AIDS.

His son, my husband’s friend - let’s call him Joe - worked in a boiler room operation where they sold overpriced office supplies (this was before Staples) over the phone. How did they get the buyers to buy their overpriced goods? The buyers weren’t the owners. They were hired employees. The boiler room would give the employee responsible for ordering supplies a brand new color tv (in the 80s, when TVs cost a lot more relative to salaries) if he bought from them. They’d give tickets to ballgames, microwaves, etc. The cost of the office supplies was so overpriced that bribing the guys who did the ordering cost them a drop in the bucket. The boiler room guys who sold the goods worked on salary & commission. Joe was one of their biggest sellers. He never filed income tax.

And investigation into the boiler room operation was done & the owners were busted. Joe got caught owing the IRS about 60k in taxes. What happened to him? Nothing. He made a deal with the IRS to pay back a minuscule amount of the money, since he no longer had a job and had no money in the bank. He paid it off after 5 years. He was a scofflaw through the early to mid 80s. Parked his car wherever he wanted, got parking tickets & ripped them up. The city came after him . I thought “This time he’s gonna pay.” I asked my husband what happened “He made it go away.” What? How? I don’t know, he wouldn’t say but he owes nothing now. (Oh - I forgot to tell you. Joe developed a huge cocaine & heroin addiction. Got Hep C, went to rehab)

He needed a new job. Back then there were matchbook covers that had ads for schools. There was one for learning to be on the radio, He went there. He got an on-air job in radio. He had a real radio voice. He was always a suave talker with a voice people trusted - that’s why he was so good at selling things over the phone. He started on a small station & over 25 years he made his way to having a drive-time radio show in a second tier market - a small city & the surrounding suburbs & countryside. Made good money. Spent every penny of it. Eventually small radio markets got shut down & he lost his job But for 25 years this double dealing, boiler room, tax cheating scofflaw ex-addict with a GED had a radio show where he talked politics & he emceed all kinds of local events. He was a star in his area. People recognized his voice everywhere & he got 1st class service. They loved him.

The reason he was ob radio & getting 1st class service is because he has a good voice & he can talk for hours. You might think it’s easy to sit in front of a microphone for 4 hours and talk, but it’s not. You can’t say “uhh...”. “ummm” or any other time filler. You’ve got to talk every single second without stopping (except for ads) every day without a script for 4 hours. You know who’s good at that? Conmen, that’s who. People tuned into the radio every morning throughout the 80s, 90s & early 00s to listen to a high school dropout con man give opinions on politics. Only because of the sound of his voice & because he could talk nonstop.

And that’s why Joe Rogan is popular & Trump is President.

Joe still spends any money he can get. Saved no money for his kids college & was wasting money playing internet poker the last I heard.
