Did you ever eat there?
This is where the Cesar salad originated?

Whenever Desi Arnaz walked in Cesar served him on his knees.

R1 The Cesar salad was invented by an Italian chef working in Mexico...Tijuana, I think.

“So Italian even your Godfather will love us.”
CRINGE

R3. So helpful. SO informative.
So needing to be seen as so helpful and informative.

I figured he'd run a tea room rather than a coffee shop.

From an old ad about their $5.99 Thanksgiving feast: “Anton at the piano.” Anyone know him?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 23, 2020 9:56 PM |
Cesar was more into crappuccino.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 23, 2020 9:56 PM |
What's a Cuban American doing with a vaguely Italian American restaurant?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 23, 2020 9:58 PM |
When he wasn't on his knees or all fours, Cesar was a real standup guy. I LOVE Cesar Romero. One of my favorite old time stars.

Any Cesar stories from the eldergays? He was hot when he was young
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 23, 2020 10:01 PM |
Cesar Romero was HOT! He showed up in some of those rat pack movies; I wonder if those boys enjoyed him. He also had a reputation as being a great 'plus 1' for single female Hollywood royalty. Very debonair.
R5 Why so hateful? You're a dick.

It doesn't say what year those ads are, but let's say 1965...that 5.95 would be nearly $49.00 today.

"Call Gilbert, your very Italian Maitre D'."
Excellent! Table for 2, please Gilbert, the name is Ben. Ben Dover. I live on Isle Drive.

^ LOL
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 24, 2020 1:03 AM |
R20 Was that really on the menu? I thought Cesar wasn’t into clams.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 24, 2020 1:16 AM |
Is it true that he and Ty Power were lovers?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 24, 2020 1:25 AM |
He served those clams, and with a gracious smile. He was a gentleman!

The three restaurants in that newspaper ad linked above are all serving exactly the same Thanksgiving dinner. Right down to the choice of green salad or turkey gumbo.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 24, 2020 2:00 AM |
I didn't know cappuccinos existed in 1965.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 24, 2020 2:06 AM |
It should be Lobster Trap at R9.
Who keeps lobster in a barrel?

El Cheapo Ceasar doesn't give ya the ice cream or sherbet for dessert like good ole Skipper. I know where I would go eat.

When I was about 5 or 6 my parents took me to Alan Hale’s Lobster Barrel - my dad was a dj back then and looked a lot like Alan Hale - when I watched Gilligan reruns it sort of confused me - my dad was right in the room - but he looked like the Skipper on TV. Anyway - Alan Hale came to our table wearing a Hawaiian shirt and his Skipper hat and greeted me by name all big and twinkly - I was so overwhelmed I cried. It is a very happy childhood memory! ....... in my 20s I saw Caesar Romero at an awards show - I am blanking on who he was escorting - tall beautiful blonde actress - ugh - I’ll remember later.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 17, 2020 4:41 AM |
I remember - He was escorting Anne Jeffreys.

Madge, I'm very jealous because I was a big Skipper fan back in the day. My memories of seeing Al Lewis sitting outside his restaurant, trying to drum up business at his restaurant "Grandpa's" (or something like that) don't compare.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 17, 2020 4:56 AM |
Wait, do any of these restaurants exist today?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 18, 2020 12:01 AM |
Nope
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 18, 2020 12:43 AM |
Damn, $5.95 for a turkey dinner.
