Other country music libs, and God bless 'em all, are a lot less surprising. Emmylou, Willie, Mary Chapin, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Eric Church, Brenda Lee, Kathy Mattea, Nanci Griffith, and on and on.
Hell, Steve Earle is actually a RADICAL lefty, if I'm not mistaken.

How can Jesse Ventura be a libertarian/Trump fan when he's a pro-union and a Bernie supporter? Trump is just a generic republican with a big mouth. If it wasn't clear before, it certainly is now.

I remember when she was having all those pop hits in the 90s, several of my ultra conservative relatives were very upset that she had gone down that route. Luckily, I quit speaking to them years and years ago, so I don't know what they thought when it came out that she was an adulteress.

I don't know what the state of Gills' marriage, but the singer Grant was married to (I think his name was Chapman) was in the middle of a raging dug addiction and were in divorce proceedings, IIRC.

Gill and Grant either left their respective spouses for one another, or got married once the divorces were final. (This was sort of shocking at the time, as Grant, at least, had a rep for being a rather straightlaced, conservative Christian.)
Either way, they totally pissed off DL Faves and the only "saved" people on the planet (heavy sarcasm being employed here, kids,) the loonies at Westboro Baptist "Church."
The Westboro asswipes started doing some of their tiresome "protests" at Gill and Grant concerts. Because God Hates Divorcees / Remarrieds ALMOST as much as God Hates Rhymes-With-Rags.
Little did they expect Gill to call their bluff after one of his concerts, when he went outside and confronted the twats directly to their inbred faces.
"Are any of you even Phelpses?" he demanded, referring to Westboro founder and reputed closet case Fred Phelps, as well as his satanic spawn.
Gill then turned to one protester he apparently recognized and opined, "You're a big dipshit!"
Which is why Vinnie Gill is one of my all-time heroes.

Reese Witherspoon is NOT liberal. Not even at all.
Ben Affleck, for all his drunken fuckery is a very left leaning Dem. he actively campaigns (or tries to when he’s not plastered) and donates a lot of money. Same w Matt Damon. Leo is a big environmentalist. Where private jets and yachts fit into that vision, I’m not sure, but he tries.

[quote] Vince Gill surprises me. Isn't he married to super Christian Amy Grant?
I'm not sure where anyone is getting the idea that Amy Grant and Vince Gill are Democrats. They may hate Trump, they may be moderate, and they may be gay-friendly. But they are most definitely Republicans. Amy Grant has donated lots of money to politicians, ALL of it to Republicans, over the years -- including to George W. Bush, Lamar Alexander, Bill Frist, Bob Corker, Fred Thompson, Marsha Blackburn, and Katherine Harris. NOTE: There are several Amy Grants at the link, so you have to look for the ones that are specifically her. I know Vince Gill has donated to Republicans, too, but I can't find a link.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 18, 2020 10:26 PM |
And here is a link to a story about Vince Gill and Amy Grant singing at a GOP fundraiser in 2002. They were -- literally -- big Bush supporters. I suppose their views may have changed since then (they probably hate Trump like the Bushes do), but I doubt they've become Democrats.

Jesse Ventura is not a Democrat, but neither is he a Republican. He is an Independent, and served as Governor of Minnesota as an Independent.
He is actually often a thoughtful man when it comes to politics, but he has a ridiculously oversized ego and a ridiculously thin skin, which was an enormous liability when he was in office. He complained endlessly about the criticism he received from "the media jackals" (as he called them) newspapers and media stations in the Twin Cities, and it interfered enormously with his ability to govern.
What he has in common with Trump is that both men wanted to govern other people but never be criticized by them. He is much, much smarter than Trump, but like Trump he had no business being in politics.

Robert Vaughn
Vaughn was a longtime member of the Democratic Party.[3] His family was also Democratic and was involved in politics in Minneapolis.[22] Early in his career, he was described as a "liberal Democrat".[23][24][25][26][27] He was opposed to the Hollywood Blacklist of suspected Communists on freedom of speech principles, but Vaughn also was opposed to Communism as a totalitarian system.[28] Vaughn campaigned for John F. Kennedy in the Presidential election of 1960 for U.S. President.[12] He was the chair of the California Democratic State Central Committee speakers bureau and actively campaigned for candidates in the 1960s.[12][22]
Vaughn was the first popular American actor to take a public stand against the Vietnam War and was active in the peace group Another Mother for Peace.[29] With Dick Van Dyke and Carl Reiner, he was a founder of Dissenting Democrats.[30] Early in the 1968 presidential election, they supported the candidacy of Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy, who was running for president as an alternative to Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who had supported President Lyndon Johnson's escalation of the war in Vietnam.[30]

Here's 71 of them from old Hollywood.
I'm surprised by Lucille Ball and Gene Kelly. Not sure why...
Elsa Lanchester's parents were weird - practiced witchcraft during her childhood - I mean, I guess she was telling the truth. British Eccentrics. Anyway, hardly surprising that she'd lean left. But some of them - I mean, Ava Gardner was from South Carolina I think.

*oops Gardner's from North Carolina.
Another surprise: Johnny Carson.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | February 1, 2021 5:44 AM |
r108/r109, Ava Gardner was dirt-poor in North Carolina growing up during the Great Depression, and a lot of the dirt-poor, especially in the South, had enormous gratitude to the Dems and FDR for giving them jobs then. The South was very pro-Democratic until the Civil Rights Movement, and then after the Civil Rights Act of 1965 Nixon used the so-called "Southern strategy" to start wooing racist Southern whites away from the Dems to vote Republican.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | February 1, 2021 6:11 AM |
Ah that makes sense. The Dixiecrats kept the South solidly Democratic till, like you say, the Civil Rights Movement and the Southern strategy. But maybe, Ava's contacts in Hollywood were also the Democratic type: Sinatra, the Kennedys, Peter Lawford, etc. so I'd like to think she wasn't the racist Dixiecrat type but who knows. I think there were rumors she was mixed-race. Anyhow, loved her in Night of the Iguana. Don't know much about her otherwise - except didn't she marry that ugly midget Mickey Rooney? Weird.

It's interesting to me that some of the loudest and staunchest Hollywood liberals during the Golden Era of Hollywood, like Charlton Heston and Frank Sinatra, became right-wingers at the end of their life. Sinatra changed for incredibly petty reasons: he was angry at JFK for piddling little snubs during the latter's presidency, and by that time Sinatra was such an egomaniac that he changed parties just to snub the Kennedys. Heston's change has never been clear to me.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | February 1, 2021 6:15 AM |
Wikipedia has a lot about Heston's change - said he didn't change, the Democratic Party changed... during a speech at Brandeis University, Heston stated, "Political correctness is tyranny with manners" - and it was so sad that white men suffer reverse discrimination yada yada.... poor widdle Chawwie never hadda chance...

Oh I forgot to mention Ed O'Neil is at least a Democratic ally despite being from Ohio. He campaigned for a few Democrats.
Tom Colicchio surprised me recently. He's apparently friends with purple-haired queer congresswoman Rosa DeLario and on his twitter he was very committed to electing Democrats. Padma was always an obvious Lib, but Tom seemed the sort to be a closet Rethug.

I always take my political views from gay porn stars, R70. So thanks for that. Does anyone know Bo Sinns' views as a Canadian on the pipeline? Is he a big Trudeau supporter?
As to Ventura. I think he was independent but Libertarian leaning way back when Libertarianism was sorta cool and just meant independent-thinking for a lot of people. Sounds like he's moved into mainstream Democratic territory of late, perhaps in response to Trump.

I'm surprised Sean Penn is a leftie considering that he's always been a tough guy and big gun fan (though he has recently stated that Charlize Theron talked him out of it). On the flip side, Sylvester Stallone is fairly anti-gun despite leaning right and making a few right-wing action movies. I guess it does, indeed, take different strokes to move the world.

R116, that is the least surprising thing in the world. She’s always struck me as an entitled, empathiless, self-centred cunt. The endless kids are a mask.

Ventura isn't a "liberal."
You know Republicans are fascist when anyone who takes issue with Trump's crimes, pathological lying, dictator ambitions and psychopathic behavior is branded a "liberal."
What a debauched, Fake News, fascist cesspool the Republicans have become!

Larry Hagman evidence: An interview in the 2000s where he was trashing Reagan.
As for Reagan: his turn to to the right was mainly a couple of things: The guy from GE as well as some Cold War book (I can't remember the name) heavily influencing him.

Pro wresting:
I know Kevin Nash liked Obama and endorsed Biden in 2020. Although, I remember a comment he made in one of his shoot interviews that came across as kind of sexist.
Jim Cornette is/was a Bernie guy. I also remember a rant he went on about Vince and Linda McMahon being Republican.
Mick Foley is a loyal Democrat.
I think the Rhodes family are Democrats? At least Cody is.

Mamie Van Doren, still sharp at 90, is very liberal. I follow her on Twitter. She's like an opposite-world Brendad Ickson.
Nancy Sinatra is another sensible liberal.

I'm surprised to see so many people say Garth Brooks is a Democrat when he is absolutely, admittedly a Republican. He most recently said so at the Biden inauguration when he joked he was the only Republican to play at a Democratic president's inauguration.
He may have been anti Trump but he's not a Democrat.
