Are There Any Glamorous Celebrities Left?
I saw the Supremes on "What's My Line," and Diane and company just reek glamour. As do Arlene and company.
But after the mid 60s it seemed to give way to unwashed hippies and unkempt males. Now we have people too lazy to shave and wearing underwear on the outside or exposed.

There was a certain type of glamour back in the day that was very upscale, classy and regal among over fifty women. You saw it on the Golden Girls when they would attend fancy gatherings. The Meadows sisters, Lucy, Eva Marie Saint, Olivia De Havilland, Joan Crawford also had it. Fancy gowns, coats, hair coiffed, adorned in pretty jewelry. You can practically smell the perfume. When plastic surgery started going through the roof, this type of glamour stopped. And it's a shame.

And coming from Rivers, who throughout her decades seeing and knowing all the "A" Listers, that's saying something.

Did you even read what the posts were about r84/r85? Real life behavior often cancels any kind of glamour with these actresses. Jolie sometimes looks great (glamourous) on a red carpet, but her behavior IRL cancels any real Hollywood glamour for me. Drugs, shit with her brother, nasty divorces etc. and generally not being a pleasant and well liked person. Same with Amber Heard and her drama. Like someone mentioned upthread, real Hollywood glamour also needs some kind of mystery surrounding the actors. Nothing mysterious about Jolie or Heard, they're just trash.

It’s called mystique, hunny. There are a few who have it. What’s her name, she had to fight them Aliens? Sigourney Weaver! I saw that movie and just wished she would wash and comb her hair. But is was fun to see her out there shooting with the fellas!

Emma Stone is kind of goofy glam. Like Amy Adams, they can wear it well, but lack mystique. Angelina Jolie looked like a witch, always. Yes, she was glamorous. But never beautiful. That bitch looked disturbed every day of her life. Pissed off. She's a permanent Disney Villain. Blanchett is a very basic person. But she looks amazing in clothes and lots of makeup. Nicole Kidman tries too hard to be GLAMOROUS - but she succeeded in spectacular fashion when she was younger and more relaxed.
Julia Roberts is glam - she knows who she is and what works on her. And that's everything from a red gown to a white pantsuit to a dark blue vintage dress. Her personality is 1,000 watt, not the jewelry. Her hair and makeup are always right but she always looks like herself. Not someone trying on a "new look."
Jessica Chastain had the allure and look of glam, a bit of quiet mystique. She's got it in her roles too. Not sure why the public and DL dislike her so much. She radiates talent a bit too much maybe.
Sharon Stone and Suzanne Somers remain the only glamorous women left in Hollywood I guess. But they aren't doing much these days. Too busy with Mensa and curing cancer. Older goddesses should devote themselves to good works. Jane Fonda was never glamorous. She's was a coed, a tootsie, an anarchist, a sports bra, trophy wife, the rich matron and now an old woman who still knows nothing about herself. She's well turned out.

Anyone who thinks Angelina Jolie ever had any authentic glamour is revealing themselves as a person who neither knows nor understands the difference between glamour and camp. She was very attractive when younger. Very, very attractive, even. But she is the human antithesis of grace and self-knowledge.
Loved your post R107, even if we may differ slightly on AJ. I don't know what it is about Amy Adams but I am unable to take my eyes off her when she's on screen. One of those women who looks pretty but unremarkable in various still and/or paparazzi shots but who seems to come alive in motion. Also, in my opinion, the most talented actress of her generation in H-Wood.

Glamour is not exactly talent and not exactly looks. It's partly what the viewer projects onto the subject. One reason there is so little glamour is that we know way too much about our celebrities. It was so much better when it was our reaction to light and shadows, not words and deeds.

^ The funny thing is that Angie has had her jaw and chin worked on multiple times to create that look. She had no chin as a child. r137 Hmmm. I didn't realise she had so much done. It may be good work, but I'm not sure why she'd choose to make her jaw the dominant feature in her face. It's very masculine to me. Maybe that's what she was going for?

That's because what R137 says is not true R138. Jolie hasn't had any work done to her jawline. She's just more defined as she got older and thinner. Like most of us. Her face loss baby fat and her bone structure is more prominent. Jolie may have had her nose slimmed down and obviously she's a fan of botox, but that's it.

R143 must be suffering from PMS. A lot of gay men on DL have it constantly.

So, that old Della character is a man? I knew it R146. Gay men are such liars.

R147, you should ask your doctor if he / she can help you with your premenstrual syndrome. No need to suffer alone.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | July 26, 2020 8:20 AM

R138 well whether she did or not it’s the type of thing someone in Hollywood WOULD get done today, because the very strong square jawline and sharp cheekbones has become very much the beauty ideal of the past I’d say 15 years. It used to be that ideal face and features of a woman were much softer (generally speaking) — cute nose that maybe had a bit of natural fleshiness at the bottom, wide set eyes, high and broad but not necessarily super chiseled cheekbones, that sort of thing.
That’s why so many people here now look at someone like Cybill Shepherd and say “I don’t get what was so beautiful about her?”

Amber Heard?! I’d say shitting in your bed and having your husband tell the world he refers to you as “Amber Turd” pretty much defies glamour. Those two are more like a real life example of turning over a rock in the woods and finding tons of squirming bugs beneath.
Angelina Jolie with her tattoos and vials of blood, no.
Balding Sharon Stone and her famous hairy vagina, no.
In this day of online tabloids and endless social media posts showcasing the banal every day activities of every celebrity it’s nearly impossible for glamour to exist. Add in to that hideous plastic surgery that’s become commonplace.
For every well-dressed red carpet moment, there’s several “leaving the gym without makeup and a coffee in hand” documented by the Daily Mail and others.
Anna Wintour is hideous. She reminds me of a giant roach.
Blanchett still has some glamour, as does Clooney, but it’s pretty much impossibke these days with our online culture (“fappening,” Instagram, Daily Mail celeb sightings, Weinstein revelations/“metoo”).

Movie star glamour left in the 70’s and 80’s, and I don’t think it ever returned. Jolie, Charlize, Julianne, Lupita ... they all look great now on the carpet but it’s the work of stylists, not their taste. In real life, they are plain Janes.

Jolie's had her entire face reorganized. And she got huge and strange looking breast implants in her late teens/early 20's. Subsequently her figure was ruined by the gigantic tits on this emaciated frame. Freakish. Not glamorous.
When she speaks, she doesn't sound mysterious or glamours. She sounds like the uneducated twat that she is, with her carefully rehearsed sound bites.

I assume the British spell "glamour" with a "u" but it looks like they also write "glamorous", almost never "glamourous". No consistency. Margaret (love your spelling) may have married a French Canadian but she isn't French herself. I remember many years ago when Margaret was young, they did a short bit about her on TV trying acting in a French film and it was a struggle for her to speak the language. I assume she is of British ancestry.

Magrite Trudeau was a very French girl. She is way before my time and her cancer death about destroyed her boys. She was GLAMOUROUS. Oh I get it, Sanjay. You learned your Franglais from Monty Python films. You only have sexual relations in federal parks? Well, that makes you a proper lady, but I beg to differ. I visited Montreal once (they have a very nice botanical garden; much better than the one in Burlington, Ontari-ari-ari-o) but I've never lived in Quebec. I haven't celebrated my 75th birthday and I'm not celibate. When you say "tante", are you also alluding to the derogatory French term for "homosexuals"? That's very clever. I think the three most glamorous actresses that I've seen IRL during their prime are Charlize, Angie and Halle. This gay boy (back in the mid 00s I was still a twink!) was mesmerized by each of those ladies when I was working as an assistant to a well known director.
For old school, I always thought Julie Christie was perfection.

Thinking about what I wrote above, I would say Fonda is technically a more accomplished performer than Christie. But that also may be because Fonda was given showier roles, and had an American, let-it-all-hang-out approach.
Christie is mesmerizing in a mysterious way... she is simply someone you want to WATCH. And she is very unselfconscious - which is rare in a performer.
And she was capable of different personas, as she showed in McCABE & MRS. MILLER. Even her physical beauty is kind of changeable.
She’s extraordinary.

David Bowie personified glamour until the very end of his life. He had it all: Mystique, creativity, a self-contained confidence. He never followed trends (if anything, he created them) and never did what was expected.
I wish I could think of someone equivalent in any field who's still alive, but I fear Twitter and 24/7 media saturation, and the pressure on celebrities to quickly adopt the social cause of the week, has just about destroyed the whole idea of glamour.
