I used to hate her, but now not so much. She is known to have helped Catherine settle into the family. Plus, Charles isn't a great prize. He really seems like an insufferable bore. I'm sure that, like Diana before her, Camilla has realized that marriage to him isn't a fairy tale.

I know two people who have met her - one close friend and one friend of a friend - both met her in private social situations, not while she was on duty.
Both said the same thing - very friendly, earthy, funny, charming, loves a drink, loves a risqué joke, great company. Neither was a particular fan beforehand.

by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 17, 2020 4:24 AM |
R15 Not really. People put on a facade for their lovers, until they snag them. Plus, I think that after he made her the most hated woman in the world, she figured the least he could do is marry her and make her a royal. And, it really was his fault. He was fickle and wimpy. It is clear she loved him from the beginning, but he wasn't willing to commit or stand up to his family and say she was his choice. He knew that she would never be able to say no to him. He thought he could have a wife and a mistress. But, he didn't count on the fact that the 1980/90s wasn't the 1880/90s.

Diana was a pill popping famewhore. She was Lindsay Lohan. The reaction to her death in the UK and the US is still an absolute embarrassment. I lived in DC at the time. The blocks surrounding the UK embassy were closed for a week because of the amount of flowers and foot traffic.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 17, 2020 4:29 AM |
In the 70s, Charles didn’t want to marry her and she was crazy in love with Andrew Parker Bowles. They came together once they were older and more appreciative of each other’s qualities, neither having wedded bliss with their respective partners. The cheating likely added some spice. I expect their sex like suffered once they were actually married.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 17, 2020 4:49 AM |
R25 I don't think she was crazy in love with Andrew Parker Bowles. Their relationship was tumultuous and on-again off-again. They only got married after both of them had been dropped by their royal lovers. I think they both liked one another and thought they would make a fun match, but they weren't madly in love. I think their quick marriage was a reaction to their failed royal relationships. Andrew had many lovers during their marriage, usually Camilla's friends. Camilla seems to have only had one, Charles.

I don't think in either couple the non-royal person were "dropped." Anne and Andrew Parker-Bowles were not very serious top begin with, and from everything I read Camilla and Charles decided they were not right for each other (Camilla wasn't sure she wanted to be a royal, and Charles was worried that since she wasn't a virgin or an aristocrat she would be considered unsuitable)
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 17, 2020 4:58 AM |
She was no oil painting, but in her younger years, she was a perfectly attractive woman. She let herself go in the 80s, got a royal makeover (teeth, skin, wardrobe) and is back to looking like a perfectly attractive woman.

R33 The books that have been written seem inconsistent. Some say what you said, others say she loved him, and he dithered. Or, the family worked against it.
When it comes to Andrew and Anne, I think he was more serious about it, than she was, in that he would have gladly married a royal for the prestige. I also suspect that he would have accepted the Earldom that Anne's husband turned down.

Crazy as a shithouse rat. She had in clinic colonic irrigation three times a week flushing her bowels out with 12 gallons of water each visit to "detoxify," only it wasn't three times a week, it was every time she felt a bit off, or anxious, or moody, or bloaty, or angry: there was a constant parade of house-call irrigationists through her doors keeping her innards as clean and minty fresh as a surgeon's operating theatre.
She wasn't without her good points, but crazy.

She may have been a prematurely old and horsey and hard looking gal in her 30s and 40s and beyond, but in her 70s, maybe it's her time. She may not turn many heads, but she looks at ease and confident and much better than I can ever recall her doing.

I like Camilla. As others have said she's unpretentious, friendly, and loves a drink. Not a bad person at all.
Camilla would not have been able to marry Charles in the 70s because she had a bit of a reputation as a "party girl." Things were different in those days, the Palace would not have allowed it. It's a shame, because if the rules had been different back then, it would've saved a tremendous amount of drama and chaos.

About 10 or more yeas ago, some old queen had a blog about the Royal Family, and he always posted pictures of the jewelry that the Queen wore on various occasions. He would wax on about the history of the jewels.
What made the blog truly funny were his snarky comments on Camilla. He hated her. Always complimented her on her shellacked hair. The old queen was quite funny. Wish I could remember the blog.

Camilla is a fun good time gal and all of you would love her if you met her. It's not her fault that the standards and morals of the BRF were still so archaic in the Seventies that the Heir had to marry a virgin. She and Charles should've been together from the very beginning.

It's a VERY AMERICAN thing this "homewrecker" thing. We English do not condemn people in this way. It's not our thing. If a married person leaves someone for someone else, we don't condemn them forever in this way and tend to think "Oh, well the marriage was on its way out anyway, glad they found someone they liked and settled down".
I'm NOT saying we're not judgemental. Just not about that.
