WTF is wrong with French people?!!
I registered in a french film site for uploading and downloading movies, I started a thread, requested some films and provided the IMDB link and the poster for each movie. Someone provided the links for the films I requested but It went hell from there. First of all, They scolded me for not thanking him (the poster who provided the movies links) even though I've not yet logged in to see the reply. As soon as I logged in, I thanked them and complimented their effort and work.
Then they scolded me for not providing the name of the director of each film!!I replied that I provided the IMDB link for the full details of each movie, they continued in their rude sarcastic responses, The thread was derailed by these out of topic comments, all scolding and bullying me (for instance, I'm searching for french movies while not being able to speak french) and finally they banned me from the forum!!!
Seriously WTF?? Are all french people like that?!!

France, customarily considered a civilized country like China and Iran and Greece, has been allowed to get away with a lot. Where Americans can be unctuous with their fake smiles and fake familiarity, the French can be quick to give a reminder that you've neglected an expected courtesy.
American:. Where is the bathroom?
French: Bonjour! [Because you didn't acknowledge the person before asking a question] The bathroom [I know exactly what you mean but because you treated me like a robot and not a human I will emphasize the strangeness of your 'bathroom' word] is through that door, and then to the right. [Waits to hear a crisp 'Merci.']

[quote] rude sarcastic responses; scolding
That's all the French can manage these days. Go to Paris, it has nothing going for it any more. It is just like any other large city in the developed world, bland with lots of McDonald's. The French are resentful that their culture has failed. Outside Quebec where else do they speak French than in Timbuktu and close environs, in all of which the President of the French Republic has a great deal of influence no doubt. When the French assemble in the EU HQ in Brussels they have to speak English; English is the language of the EU even though only Ireland and Malta use English as one of their official languages. The French hate that, esp as their language was the old diplomatic language. Bye.

And what exactly is your point? There are THOUSANDS of French-derived place names in the U.S. and many of those from figures in French history who had a connection to the U.S. I've never heard a French person belittle an American because he didn't give thanks for the Louisiana Purchase, for the contributions of Lafayette, for L'Enfant, for providing the impetus of some of Jefferson's more important ideas, for the gift of the goddamned Statue of Liberty.
And yet Americans think they deserve a hero's welcome wherever they go in the world. They want people to stop and listen and help them with their questions and listen to some story about a soft serve ice cream shop that's the most famous in all of Indians. They get fucking pissy because they get off a plane at CDG and think they should be received ad if disembarking from Air Force One. They want a showering of thanks and applause at every time. I had a wonderful time in Paris. The only rude people were the big Asian tour groups at Versailles. They wouldn't stop pushing and running in to me.
My friend and I got lost a few times and we were always politely helped by a French person. If we went to stores, we always greeted clerks and said goodbye when we left. We tried to speak French when we could, but most people who knew English would switch to it without asking.
We just really didn't want to be a stereotypical American tourist and we had a great time.

R41 Actually the French and the rest of Europe should thank the Soviets/ Russians who fought the German: Axis forces in the Eastern Front. German army suffered about 80% of losses and casualties there fighting the Russians. Almost 9 million Russian troops died in WW2. If it wasn’t for them the Germans would’ve easily overtaken France and GB plus hold onto rest of Western Europe. Americans are only taught the wrong history because of the Cold War. The French however have no excuse when reminded of this fact. They always like to think their nation was saved by a handful of French resistance fighters.

[quote]France is done. Much like the US are done. Two great nations, now on the decline.
The difference between France and other key European countries in world history, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, etc. is that they have been at various periods "Number 1" and for the rest of the time they have not.
They have a lot of practice at not being the alpha center of the world because they know their various Golden Ages do not last forever.
The U.S. does not have this perspective. Yet. The U.S. are Number 1 in very few measures of which to be proud or even unashamed. When they sense the truth of this they lash back with old tropes about WWII and Rock and Roll and modern music and that boorish American tourists somehow are directly responsible for the well being of all those Parisians and Romans teeming the streets of their cities in smart clothes and briefcases and laptops (every one of them a rude waiter, evidently.)
The Parisian, the Roman, the Madrileño, the Amsterdammers are okay with not being in first position on the world stage. In fact they give it no thought and get on very nicely indeed. They work at their own problems and their own successes without having to score themselves against other nations as though there is a prize pig to be won. They have beautiful cities and countries, they have their own successes and failures on a national and personal level.
Unlike Americans, they don't see everything as an international competition. They don't lose time to holding onto some notion of being king of the world even when they know they the door on that is closing; that they are no longer #1 but more likely #14 or #34. Ask a Frenchman or a Spaniard if he is powerful and strong and you will likely get an odd look. Ask him if he is happy with his life and where he lives and you will have asked the better question.
"We're No. 1!" clings to a past that already gone by so so many measures. Even 'MAGA' acknowledges this is its "Again!" There's nothing wrong with this, the U.S. remains a great and important center if the world even as it rapidly flows away from being *the* center. Americans should find things to make them happy about their lives and where they live rather than cling so desperately to old distinctions and old grudges. Learn to enjoy what you have is the way to move away from being angry about what you worry you have lost.

I don't think that's a French thing, it's more of an internet online movie bro thing.
Back on Usenet, rec.food.cooking and rec.arts.movies.past-films were always like that, and there were very few French posters. They would derail, insult, complain, whine, attack, the whole nine yards. When I moved on from Usenet to LiveJournal they were the same way. Some crazy people would think you personally should respond to them personally every time they posted, and be on the group 24/7, and do everything exactly so or else you should be SHAMED!! and also SHUNNED!!! forever.
I think forums are especially prone to that kind of thing, while social media, because it's so huge, doesn't get that "pay attention to me and my 4000 rules" attitude as much.

Japanese people travel around the world quite a lot. They are also big Francophiles and for many it is their European vacation destination of choice. But you often hear from Japanese who have visited there about how dirty, dangerous, and underwhelming Paris is. In fact Japanese travel agencies often warn people of this saying it’s a cultural thing. Also how impolite the French people are compared to the rest of Europe. It takes them by surprise as the Japanese are probably the most polite and considerate people both in their native land and when traveling abroad. In contrast, Japanese who have traveled abroad especially to the US always say how friendly the Americans are, the exact opposite of the French.
So the French reputation is deserved. I can understand the animus against Americans for being the dominant Western culture in the world. But why the same shitty attitude towards polite Japanese people visiting their country and spending money there? Because that’s the French attitude, it’s halfway between smug and contempt particularly in Paris. Better food there than Italy but I found the Italians to be much more friendly.

I'm American and I've lived in France twice. Paris is almost its own country, and the rudeness reputation is well deserved. I speak pretty good French, so my experiences have been better than Americans I know who don't speak it or struggle with the language. Parisians for the most part are not the friendliest. I got to know some after a few initial rude encounters and they're much nicer when you get to know them. Still, they have a penchant for constantly telling you what's wrong with you, your opinions, your tastes, etc. I learned to just shrug it off.
When I lived in Normandy, I thought the people were friendlier. I spent some time in the South of France and they seemed the friendliest there. Must be all that sun. But in both places, the people were still quick to tell you how they think you fell short in whatever area it happened to be. I used to laugh, too, because if a French person was naturally polite, nice, showed good manners, and didn't feel the need to tell you all the things that were wrong with you, other French people would talk about how nice and polite that person was in a reverent way. I used to think, "Why not just emulate him or her?"

I took French in the U.S. beginning in 7th grade (12 and 13 year olds.) A solid third of American French textbooks are the cultural sections which basically exist to coach you out of hating the French. Which is odd, because out of all the countries in the world, Americans and the French are some of the most pre-disposed to getting along.

American tourists come in extremes, either very culturally astute or really trashy, loud and ignorant. French tourists are far more despised on average (and that's saying something) and usually come off as rude and/or indifferent to their surroundings when traveling.

R103: French tourists (and there are many) are very well regarded in Spain, and I've never seen one be impolite.
Obviously the two countries share a large border, but, aside from English, young Spanish people are most interested in learning French, and young French people Spanish. In any case there's an affinity.

People in Scandinavia hardly learn French and half of Belgium speaks French as the second official language. Spanish is a Roman language too so it’s relatively easy to learn for the French and that’s the affinity. They are lazy. They don’t want to speak a germanic language like English.

I worked at tourism spot in the U.S. that got people from all over the globe. I'd rank French in the top half of tolerable. English and Eastern Canadian were godawful pricks like clockwork. Scottish and Mexican were delightful as a default.

Same, r109. I've workwd for several summers at language camps and the French students have been fine (and odorless). Russians were unfailingly polite, although direct. Brazilians were wonderful.
The most despised were the Italians, year after year, and our English coworkers, who started out nice but would inevitably devolve into opinionated assholes allergic to doing their share of the grunt work and incapable of taking direction from more experienced staff. It got to the point where they were automatically placed at the bottom of the list for positions.

R110 Haha I forgot Italians, they were also hard to deal with. They found flaws with almost everything and would demand very specific replacements. No salt on my food, I want this room, I want to pay this much for that, etc.
The French weren't nice, but were usually likeable.

I'm an Australian and lived in Paris for 2 years, and while the French are very 'frank' I actually had no problems with them in this regard. Especially people in the half of Paris below the Seine (the Latin Quarter and Luxembourg gardens area) were lovely and helpful.
At one point I worked at a café and my manager told me to try 'not to get in people's way too much'. Perhaps this explains some of it? I think instead of providing people with everything they need, or going above and beyond to be servile to customers, there's more of an ingrained culture of staying out of their way and only being of service when needed.
People in the South of France are extremely charming and hospitable, like in most Mediterranean areas. Easygoing like the people in those Greek, Italian, Spanish and Lebanese beach towns.

I must be in the minority. I spent four days in Paris in March 2001, visiting my oldest friend and her husband. She went to work and he and I went to some shops. If anybody remembers Monsieur and Madame Thibaut from French class, you'll remember they didn't shop at the big grocery stores, but the local shops for their evening meal. All the shops we went to, my friend's husband went to do his thing whilst I looked at things. The shop keepers approached me, asking me if I needed help. When I told them I was just waiting for G., they became very friendly. They all told me I spoke French well and commented on my accent (I'd never been to France, so my French must've sounded like the Queen's English without any language drift.)
The point is, they were polite and friendly to me before they discovered I was there with a regular customer. And yes, I speak French, but nowhere near the fluency of others.
Although there for a short visit, the one difference in our cultures is that the French seemed to enjoy life. And it also seemed to me they worked to live, not vice versa.

It's important not to mix up 'France' and 'Paris'. Many capitals are hated by people in the rest of the country, but I think France is even more so in that regard.
As for difficult tourists, I understand the Chinese are impossible. It's in their culture to complain the second that anything is even slightly wrong, in the hope of screwing a refund or price reduction out of you, which they would regard as completely fair and a good day's business.

Parisian here (suburb), don't mistake Parisians and French, even the French hate Parisians. If you want to learn more about WTF is wrong with French people (but really Parisians) have a look at Paul Taylor's show #Franglais he is a British who has spend the last 10 years in Paris, he managed to make it as a stand up comedian. He is good, and right on the French.
for info: waiters in France have a decent salary and do not depend on tips for paying their bills. Their job is to get the food as quickly as possible on your table, not to befriend you.
ps : nobody in France is learning in History class that we won WW2 or even WW1, we were saved, thanks guys! (and thanks to the Marshal plan as well from saving us from starvation).

R114 Interesting experience working at the café. As a French person I'd say when service people go above and beyond, when nothing indicated that this is what we're looking for, it comes across as needy and looking for attention. As a customer, I find it distracting because I'm not going to the café to interact/pay attention to the server, but rather to spend time with my friends! An efficient server is always appreciated. Friendly, why not. But you have to gauge if the clients are going to "like" you, and honestly you never know. Getting out of people's way is sound advice.

Visited Paris for 2 weeks after the Brussels bombing 2015, with only knowing 3 phrases in French. Everyone was fine there, maybe encountered one waiter who rolled his eyes. But tourism was down, and we had a proprietor of a restaurant ask us why we were visiting Paris- weren't we afraid of bombings? We said, "Because it's Paris", and he smiled.
The rudest French person was a young waitress in London, at a tiny but excellent French restaurant. She told us to our faces that she hated American people because of their politics- we told her we voted for Obama, and she was slightly mollified. We also asked her why she's in London, and she said that she didn't want to raise her kids in France, but didn't elaborate.
