Ann B. Davis on the Dating Game

In want of some comfort TV a few years ago, I watched an episode of the Brady Bunch and was drawn into a scene that prominently featured Alice. It took me a while to figure out who her mannerisms, delivery, and overall shtick reminded me of, but then it came to me: Ellen DeGeneres. I can't remember enough about that particular episode to find that clip, but here she is on the Dating Game acting all Ellenesque. Could Ellen have been inspired by Ann B. Davis?

Both lesbians...

But was Ann a huge cunt in real life?

by Anonymousreply 1July 9, 2020 6:27 PM

OMG! I never knew she was on. That's funny.

by Anonymousreply 2July 9, 2020 6:28 PM

I have never met a lesbo who is not a real cunt, so yeah probably

by Anonymousreply 3July 9, 2020 6:33 PM

Hilarious OP! Uncanny!

by Anonymousreply 4July 9, 2020 6:56 PM

Ann was a JESUS FREAK!

by Anonymousreply 5July 9, 2020 7:01 PM

Bachelor 1 is bald.

Bachelor 2 is wearing a cheap Korean wig.

Bachelor 3 is wearing a cheaper Korean wig.

No wonder the gal was a lez.

by Anonymousreply 6July 9, 2020 7:03 PM

Religion does attract some lesbians.

Allows an outlet for their puritanical humorlessness.

by Anonymousreply 7July 9, 2020 7:05 PM

Haha, she was all “I remain unconvinced. Back to the tuna.”

I think Ann was a much MUCH nicer person than Ellen.

by Anonymousreply 8July 9, 2020 7:13 PM

The other two bachelors their hair seems real. The host of the show looks like he's wearing a wig. He also looks like a Chevrolet salesman.

by Anonymousreply 9July 9, 2020 7:14 PM

Such a hardcore lesbian. What was the point of this?

by Anonymousreply 10July 9, 2020 10:35 PM

They should have had a gay version of The Dating Game

by Anonymousreply 11July 9, 2020 10:39 PM

Ann B. Davis was one of the biggest dykes of all time.

by Anonymousreply 12July 9, 2020 11:10 PM

I think she is beautiful in this clip. I'm a gay man, no physical attraction, but gosh she is pretty.

by Anonymousreply 13July 9, 2020 11:44 PM

She’s sort of cute here. Too bad they gave her three duds for her episode. Should have been three gorgeous hunks.

by Anonymousreply 14July 9, 2020 11:57 PM

Great analysis OP.

by Anonymousreply 15July 9, 2020 11:58 PM

Bachelor #2's voice sounds so familiar.

by Anonymousreply 16July 10, 2020 12:11 AM

Of course OP, because people choose their mannerisms and the way they hold themselves, talk etc. Unless of course Ellen is a brilliant character actress who is permanently in character, i'd say it's a coincidence or they're both dykes!

by Anonymousreply 17July 10, 2020 12:15 AM

Lots of women similar to Ann (in those days) followed the path to “God” and stayed in the closet. It’s too bad. Times were tough for gays and lesbians back then.

by Anonymousreply 18July 10, 2020 12:27 AM

They should've gotten Sam the Butcher to play one of the bachelors.

by Anonymousreply 19July 10, 2020 12:27 AM

I've been saying it for years. If they do a Brady Bunch Movie reboot, Ellen Degeneres would be perfect casting for Alice.

by Anonymousreply 20July 10, 2020 12:27 AM

At least they won a trip to San Francisco. Ann could have ended the date early and then went to a lesbian bar.

by Anonymousreply 21July 10, 2020 12:43 AM

The comments on that clip also mention the Ellen resemblance.

by Anonymousreply 22July 10, 2020 12:45 AM

Wow, that's true about the Ellen similarities - weird!

by Anonymousreply 23July 10, 2020 12:50 AM

She's mocking, like a dyke would be toward a male suitor. This must have been attempt to hetero-size her image.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when her and Robert Reed dished the dirt.

by Anonymousreply 24July 10, 2020 12:55 AM

She was a homophobe. Sherwood's son said he once asked her point blank if she was a lesbian and she laughed and said, "I have many problems but that isn't one of them."

So being a lesbian is a problem? Cancel that show.

by Anonymousreply 25July 10, 2020 1:26 AM

r25 She was from a VERY different time and generation. That response was not at all unusual for someone of her era.

by Anonymousreply 26July 10, 2020 1:27 AM

R25- She should have said- I have many problems but being heterosexual isn't one of them.

by Anonymousreply 27July 10, 2020 2:39 AM

I always imagined Ann being a lot like Frances Bavier, the actress who played Aunt Bea and felt it overwhelmed her true self. When you create an iconic role it stays with you forever!

by Anonymousreply 28July 10, 2020 2:40 AM

It's too bad she never found the right guy

by Anonymousreply 29July 10, 2020 2:47 AM

I think the guys' balls withdrew up in their bodies when they heard it was Alice from The Brady Bunch.

by Anonymousreply 30July 10, 2020 2:55 AM

[quote]It's too bad she never found the right guy

She was too busy EATING PUSSY.

by Anonymousreply 31July 10, 2020 2:56 AM

Thank you, R22! I didn't look at the comments. I just posted the first clip of her I found that reminded me of Ellen.

And I didn't mention the super lesbo 1970's pantsuit! Or that I think she may have been too repressed about her sexuality to realize she was a lesbian. I've known a number of women like that.

by Anonymousreply 32July 10, 2020 3:28 AM

Ellen's version

"Back To The Tuna" would be a great movie or album title.

by Anonymousreply 34July 10, 2020 3:38 AM

Were the three guys gay as well?

A family friend did some reno work on Anne's home in Studio City where Anne lived with her "niece.". Our friend, a big flamer, said the two of them pinged to the moon and back but the younger woman was somewhat attractive

by Anonymousreply 35July 10, 2020 3:40 AM

Somehow I would think Alice's version of the Dating Game would be three gals answering questions like: "If Jan flushed a tampon, how would you unclog the toilet?" or "What is the best way to get Bobby's jizz stains out of his underoos?"

by Anonymousreply 36July 10, 2020 3:44 AM

In the comments, one woman said that Ann B. Davis asked to see her new baby's "little tallywacker." EEK!

by Anonymousreply 37July 10, 2020 3:48 AM

Of course Alice was a dyke. What do you think she and Carol were doing during the day when Mike was at work and the kids were in school?

by Anonymousreply 38July 10, 2020 3:54 AM

I would love to see Ellen with a genuine Ann B. Davis hairdo! Does anyone here know how to do Photoshop?

by Anonymousreply 39July 10, 2020 4:08 AM

[quote] What do you think she and Carol were doing during the day when Mike was at work and the kids were in school?

Selling drugs in the carport and tricking out the kids, silly.

by Anonymousreply 40July 10, 2020 4:10 AM

Ann B. Davis sweety....

by Anonymousreply 41July 10, 2020 4:11 AM

She took over the role of Winifred when Carol Burnett departed from the Broadway production of "Once Upon a Mattress."

Unrelated but related. A man on our floor was on the dating game twice. One episode was with The Carpenters. It was all set up (no surprise) for the girl to choose Richard. The other time was just a regular show. He said there were no dates. It was a pay check. Most people were struggling actors chosen by casting directors to see what you looked like on camera. He said he was on the newly wed show too:: he was paired up with an actress & fed the questions. No one won a trip. Just a pay check & screen time. He said a lot of these shows were like that & he did many.

by Anonymousreply 43July 10, 2020 4:24 AM

r26

So owning slaves as from a different generation, so I guess you support the Confederate flag eh?

by Anonymousreply 44July 10, 2020 4:34 AM

You can watch the Richard Carpenter episode on youtube as well.

I had no idea she'd been so closeted. Must've been from living in the broom closet under the stairs for so many years.

by Anonymousreply 46July 10, 2020 4:35 AM

And the Dating Game with Karen Carpenter, another closet case, in my opinion.

Your whole sentence is one big "Oh Dear", Junior. Stop eating the paint off the walls at the community daycare.

by Anonymousreply 48July 10, 2020 4:39 AM

Ellen would have been 2 years old at the start of the Brady Bunch, so I doubt it...unless she was watching reruns.

by Anonymousreply 49July 10, 2020 4:40 AM

R44 Take your nsufferable sjw bullshit somewhere else! Being a lesbian would have been. a problem for an actress on a family show (back then) deal with it idiot!

by Anonymousreply 50July 10, 2020 4:44 AM

FFS r44 nice false analogy. Lots of people from Ann B. Davis's generation had issues with being gay, especially if they were religious, which she was. Why don't you read a little history? It was such a different time.

by Anonymousreply 51July 10, 2020 4:47 AM

Ann had a twin.

by Anonymousreply 52July 10, 2020 4:48 AM

Ann was not a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 53July 10, 2020 4:50 AM

Ellen was born in January of 1958, R49. The Brady Bunch aired from September 1969 to March 1974 and after that, there were a number of Brady Bunch specials. How was Ellen two years old for this?

by Anonymousreply 54July 10, 2020 4:53 AM

^^ how much pussy did Ann pull during this period?

by Anonymousreply 55July 10, 2020 4:55 AM

Ann and Nancy Kulp were the two biggest dykes in Hollywood back then.

by Anonymousreply 56July 10, 2020 4:57 AM

Just because they were slightly butch doesn't make them lesbian, neither of them were out.

by Anonymousreply 57July 10, 2020 5:01 AM

Nancy Kulp came out in 1989. Ann B. Davis never came out. She repressed her sexuality and lived celibately within the church.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 58July 10, 2020 5:07 AM

I was disappointed in Ann B. Davis in interview in which she said Nancy Kulp was weird or something just as negative. I wonder if it was because Nancy at least latterly didn't deny her sexuality while Ann closeted herself away with a cult of sorts.

by Anonymousreply 59July 10, 2020 5:10 AM

Ann hated working with Rip Taylor on The Brady Bunch Variety Hour. Apparently he was too crude for her tastes (and I'm betting she also hated his flamboyant, all-but-officially-out persona.)

by Anonymousreply 60July 10, 2020 5:17 AM

For one week, r42, then the show closed. Carol couldn’t do it for one more stinkin’ week?!?

For whatever reason, I thought Imogene Coca replaced her. Maybe she did the National Tour.

by Anonymousreply 61July 10, 2020 5:23 AM

Ann B. Davis kept slaves?

by Anonymousreply 62July 10, 2020 5:28 AM

Possibly, her father served in the confederate army.

by Anonymousreply 63July 10, 2020 5:30 AM

Love the way she GTFOs away from her 'date' as soon Jim Lange shakes her hand :)

by Anonymousreply 64July 10, 2020 5:31 AM

Nancy Kulp came out in 1989.

Dody Goodman opened the National Tour and was replaced by Imogene Coca.

If you look online, there is a full complement of publicity photos for Ann B. Davis in Once Upon a Mattress. The full company, on stage, in costume. That all cost a lot of money to produce. There is just no way that the producers planned for Ann B. Davis just to fill in a final week.

So what happened???

by Anonymousreply 66July 10, 2020 12:08 PM

I wonder if Ann got it on with Imogene Cocka when she guest starred on BB.

by Anonymousreply 67July 10, 2020 12:39 PM

I'm kind of surprised by the bachelors they picked for her. I bet that if a famous man in his 40s or 50s was playing the game, the show would have picked pretty 20-something women to be the contestants. But for Ann B. Davis, it looks like the producers went down to the local bar 1 hour before taping started, and picked up the first three schlubs who were willing to ride over to the studio with them for $50.

by Anonymousreply 68July 10, 2020 2:31 PM

Richard chose his sister for the date. And the rest is history.
