I'm feeling nostalgic for old computer stuff today

I was cleaning out the basement and found and old America Online disc: "doo Doo DOO zzzzzbeepzzzzz"

What are some of your early computer memories?

Computers were somewhat difficult to operate, so once you got on the internet there was a certain level of intelligence and savvy to communicate with... Then they made computers so that any idiot could operate one :(

Waiting for it to boot up / reboot felt like 800 years too.

Everyone hated Clippit, but no one ever remembers any of the other office assistants.

I remember a Compuserve forum (alt.celebrities.gossip?) that was a proto-Datalounge. Anthony Rapp was our resident celebrity

I remember IRC from the time where you had to be at least a little bit "tech savvy" to be able to use a chat client and everyone I met via IRC chat was interesting and less superficial than people are now. Now that EVERYONE is online it seems like the world is full of the dumbest fucking assholes you could ever possibly meet.

I remember spending about five hours- around the year 2001- trying to get online (I called AOL but each time they put me on hold- then it hung-up on me). I called a friend in desperation and he said to check all the connections. Sure enough, one of the cords in back was detached.

You would be surprised R6. I didn't look too closely at that unit, but I ran a Tandy computer service center for a couple of years in the late 80s, early 90s. We would have businesses like Machine shops, Dry cleaners, Warehouses, etc... That ran their operations on similar computers. All the clients were dumb terminals that were rock solid.

I was on the back end of that era. I only saw them when they came into the shop for maintenance or repair. It would be funny to watch a business shut down for a week and drag all the equipment to be serviced in multiple cars, packed in the back seats and trunks because you really didn't want to ship them. We had to use oscilloscopes to tune the hard drives and replaced basic components on the circuit boards, i

^^Those systems usually retailed in the mid six figure range. That included all the customization and consulting. But it was the gift that kept on giving because the service contracts were almost as expensive as the implementation. Of course, we were still cheaper than IBM.

We just moved...and found--once again--my husband's original Apple computer. Model M0001. I guess it's worth something now, but we're holding onto it for old times' sake.

R25 / R26 yes it was a very reliable machine and we eventually upgraded it to 48K (who would ever need more than that???) but the cassette storage was very hit or miss when it came to saving files. Whenever I worked on a school essay I made sure to print out a hardcopy (on a dot matrix printer, natch) before saving, lest all my hours of work be lost.

I remember when WordStar was new and wonderful. Later I was on CompuServe forums. I consulted a translators forum for help with my German homework.

How could I forget the Trash-80. I can't even remember where I first used one. High school maybe? And I think I knew slightly older, maybe 19 yr old, who had one. He was very unpleasant, inside and out, the least liked and probably oldest person in our group... anyway we peed together outside a few times, I saw his huge uncut dick and.. a few days later I fell in love with his computer. And he knew it too. He wanted me to. Nevermind

The cassette storage worked great with my Atari 2600. But that was a one way flow of data.

Gay.com - the original Grindr. It seems so primitive now. You couldn't even put pictures up on your profile. It was HUGE in the late 90s/early 2000s, those were my twink days when I was horny 24 hours a day and I was always on it.
