"What The World Needs Now Is Love" - Jackie DeShannon

Dionne Warwick was originally offered the song but turned it down saying it was "too country" and "too preachy" though she later recorded it for her album Here Where There is Love.

Jackie DeShannon's version is still the first and best recording of the song.

Great recording. Can't believe Warwick turned it down. There's no accounting for taste. Lately, Barbra did a lovely version of this on her last album WALLS. Michael McDonald sings back up and it's arranged and produced by Babyface.

How long are we going to have to wait for a Dionne Warwick/ Burt Bacarach biopic?

by Anonymousreply 3July 5, 2020 2:23 AM

I don't love Dionne's version.

What a beautiful melody.

There are some videos on youtube with this Jackie DeShannon version credited as Dionne Warwick.

I've heard Dionne's version of the song and it's kind of awful compared to Jackie's iconic version.

This song makes me homesick for back then.

Funny how you can always “spot” a Bacharach song. He’s got a definite style.

Jackie De Shannon had an even bigger hit 4 years later in 1969 with a similar song called Put A Little Love In Your Heart which she cowrote and received a gold record for it.

I bought the single and still have it.

One of the weaker Bacharach/David efforts.

Not at all. A great song.

by Anonymousreply 12July 5, 2020 2:55 AM

You all act like Dionne was some no-talent schlock. LOL.

Barbra. Just amazing.

Jackie DeShannon had an even BIGGER hit circa 1982, R9. Granted, it was for COMPOSING the song, but what a song.

"Bette Davis Eyes," by DL legend Kim Carnes!
