I’ve mentioned this before but I’m in the PR/event business and you see it all there (either a fashion event, a screening after party etc) either outside or in some corner somewhere. Only difference between now and the “old days” is they 99% of the time make sure never to get caught on camera.

I agree with R42 that there is no stigma associated with smoking in many of the European cities I've been to. One just does or one does not. We are a bit hysterical about it here, that's true. Especially since Americans are hardly avatars of health on so many other fronts.
I also wonder if many celebrities -- the really big ones -- continue to smoke because they are just used to getting their own way. One of the reasons I quit was because it was a hassle to smoke wherever you went. But if you owned a restaurant and someone complained that George Clooney was smoking, which one do you think the owner is going to accommodate? If you're some small time actor trying to make it and you got a bit part in one of the Marvel movies, do you think you'll be there tomorrow if you complain about Chris Evans' second-hand smoke?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 30, 2020 1:57 AM |
r45 reminded me that Bette Davis continued to smoke wherever and whenever she felt like it, into the 1980s when lots of regulations banning smoking began to be passed. Bette didn't give a shit, she still smoked in restaurants in Beverly Hills and other places where smoking had been banned and nobody had the nerve to stop her.

I quit smoking about 5 years ago. Getting close to retirement these days. I can tell you that the best career advise always came from going outside to smoke and chatting up fellow smokers. There is a camaraderie between smokers. I had direct access to the Vice President of the company if I provided the Marlboro’s so his wife didn’t know.

Me too.
When I was in my early 20s I smoked, and so did several of the VPs.
I was promoted over other candidates because those VPs had spent time talking to me over a cigarette break, and knew my strengths and weaknesses.
HATED the company, but it helped me move up the ladder, and gave me the confidence and capital to start my own company.

To an extent...but smokers know, and will congregate.
If a couple of people in management smoke, and you can persuade them to “clue you in”, then you have a big advantage over the rest of your group. The only time I’ve ever golfed is with upper management, and only because we had developed a rapport while “sneaking a ciggie”. My lack of golf skills was not only endearing, but gave me a chance to “come out” in a nonchalant manner.
I was dying as I said the words, but they already knew I was gay, so their response was “And...?” They didn’t care, so it was much ado. My immediate supervisor was SO hot in those shorts and polo.
Fond memory.

[quote]My doctor growing up smoked. It totally confused me.
My parents were friends with a doctor who smoked and quit when he was his mid 40s. A friend's mother was a nurse and a heavy smoker for a long time. He mentioned that some of his mom's nurse friends were smokers. When I was in college, I worked as a receptionist at a nursing home for awhile and the head nurse and the doctor on staff were smokers. They used to walk down the street to cafe parking lot to smoke.
A few years back, I was watching old episodes of Trauma:Life in the ER and there was one episode where the crew filmed a trauma surgeon smoking outside the hospital. He said he wasn't a heavy smoker and sometimes smoked before he started his workday and would smoke sometimes after performing long surgeries.

My mother began her nursing career in the 1970s and she told me that smoking was allowed in the lounges on each hospital floor. What a different world it was back then.

Not everyone has the same damage done to them from smoking. For instance, it has aged my face by a few years, but my stepdad smoked since he was 10 and he still looks 15 years younger than he is. People get shocked by his age.

Both the Queens mother and father smoked as did her sister Margaret, so I guess she tolerated it some. I read somewhere once that while the Queen never smoked, she didn't mind people doing so.

My cousin lives in Bermuda.
A long-time ago, after Catherine Zeta-Jones married Michael Douglas, my cousin and Zeta-Jones met over both of them stepping outside a social event to smoke on a balcony. Her and Michael Douglas either own, or, used to own, a property there.
I know everybody here gets a kick out of whatever her age is but my cousin said she's physically striking and that she was very friendly and down to Earth.
I, too, miss smoking. I was a Kool's smoker.
I don't know how anybody except wealthy celebrities can afford to smoke cigarettes.

Massachusetts recently banned menthol cigarettes because "that's what young people smoke." It was done as a way to curb youth smoking, which surprised me. Times must've changed because when I was a teenager in the 90s nobody smoked menthols. At my high school it was almost 100% Marlboro with a few Camel smokers and that was it. Menthol smokers were kind of looked down on i.e. "why the fuck are you smoking those shit sticks?"

I quit smoking 10 years ago. I really miss it. I also feel like I was a lot more fun & relaxed when I was a smoker. I also miss those spontaneous conversations you would have with other smokers.
One of the worst things was when I would get drunk and bum a cigarette and it would be a menthol. It tasted so disgusting!

I'm surprised when I see younger and seemingly health conscious celebrities are smokers. It shows the the power that nicotine addiction has on some people.
I was fortunate enough to decide to quit cold turkey one day on impulse when I was 23. I haven't put a cigarette to my lips since, and that's over 30 years now. Best decision I ever made. Two friends of mine who said they were going to quit back when I did..... but they still smoke today. One has emphysema (and still smokes) and the other has lost all his teeth.

For some people it's very difficult to quit smoking. A good friend of mine claimed he was going to quit over 25 years ago, and he's still smoking today. To be fair he cut down from 20 cigs a day to about 8, so that's a positive step, but to not be able to quit when you're now in your fifties doesn't hold out much hope, until perhaps you're diagnosed with a serious or terminal illness, and then it's too late.

From Laura's book, “Spoken From the Heart,”

And finally I was able to quit smoking. But it’s hard.”

by Anonymous | reply 205 | October 25, 2020 8:58 AM |
3 packs a day R205? How? How many in a pack? 20? 25?
I don't believe that for a second. You would literally have to smoke one after the other all the time you are awake to get through 3 packs a day which is 60 - 70 cigarettes.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | October 25, 2020 10:09 AM |
R206, I don't know what brand AH smoked, but American brands are 20 to a pack, so that's 60 day. Assuming you're awake 16 hours, that would be 1 cig every 15-20 minutes. Modern 100 mm length cigs take about 6 or7 minutes to smoke. So, yeah, given that there would be stretches of time when she couldn't smoke, she must have been chain-smoking the rest of the time. Even in the smoke-happy '50s and '60s, that's a lot of cigarettes.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | October 25, 2020 10:56 AM |
I usually smoked two or three packs of Marlboros every day when I smoked—never fewer than two and often more than three. People smoked everywhere in the '60s through the mid-'80s. I've never researched it, but it seemed as if most people smoked.

R206, you're naive to say the least. Many stars back then smoked 2-3, even FOUR packs a day. Even people you would think were athletic, like dancers Fred Astaire, Ann Miller and Donald O'Connor were heavy smokers.
Bette Davis smoked 4-5 packs a day, even AFTER she had strokes and was diagnosed with breast cancer. That's an addict for sure.
Maybe Hepburn didn't smoke exactly 3 packs/day, but it's well known she was a heavy smoker.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | November 2, 2020 8:26 AM |
Have you ever smoked R211? They must have felt deathly sick all the time. They would have felt so nauseous they would have had no appetite, bad headaches, dizziness and their teeth would have all fallen out. Or did they not inhale the smoke and just held the cigarettes in their hands as props?
Bette Davis smoking 4-5 packs a day is ridiculous. Yes she was a heavy smoker but she would literally have to be chain smoking one cigarette after the other including when she was in the shower, on camera, travelling, in bed, everywhere - no breaks - just smoking. I think it's just an urban myth. Yes I know that most stars were heavy smokers. They are now too.
But there's heavy smoking and then there's just making shit up. 30 or 40 a day I could believe but not 80 to 100 cigarettes a day. They would have no time to do anything else except smoke.
by Anonymous | reply 212 | November 2, 2020 9:28 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 218 | November 2, 2020 3:31 PM |
Bette Davis was already pretty old when she had the strokes and mastectomy, she probably figured she might as well continue to smoke because she didn't have that much time left anyway.
BTW, those strokes were caused by alcohol withdrawal when she was still in the hospital recovering from the mastectomy.
by Anonymous | reply 219 | November 2, 2020 3:39 PM |

My mother, also a narcissist if that matters - "pretended" to smoke - too stupid to learn how. Narcissists do a lot of pretending - to be smart, to be dominant, etc etc... why am I off on this.
Please let January 20 hurry up and get here.
Oh -- I smoked for 20 years but only when I was drinking - and/or with other people who smoked/drank. It was a dual addiction. A drink without a cigarette would put me to sleep, after one - a cigarette without a drink made me feel dizzy and sick. But put the two together: heaven. The rush from the cigarette counteracts the depressant affect of the alcohol.
