Can someone explain to me how Janelle Monet is thing?

She shows up at everything, she’s a complete ham, (hve you seen her “Time’s Up” tangent from the Grammys or some awards show from a year or so ago? OMG!), she’s not a singer but gets an occasional song on the radio, I’ve never heard anything about her acting abilities but she somehow was cast in a major motion picture about Harriet Tubman.

She’s the most famous non-famous person I know of. Is she really that major of a multi-talented artist or is it just a good agent??

by Anonymousreply 100July 4, 2020 11:40 PM

She's beautiful looking but I've never thought her voice or act was anything special.

by Anonymousreply 1June 27, 2020 7:24 PM

[quote] Can someone explain to me how Janelle Monet is thing?

I would if I knew what that meant.

by Anonymousreply 2June 27, 2020 7:32 PM

Is she related to this guy?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 3June 27, 2020 7:34 PM

I like her. She's no less talented than any of the other lucky things around - Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, etc. - nothing special - may as well add her into the mix.

by Anonymousreply 4June 27, 2020 7:34 PM

I mean, she's better than Lizzo.

by Anonymousreply 5June 27, 2020 7:40 PM

The thing I like about her is that she retains a little mystery. And she’s not relying on her tits and ass like all the other pop tarts.

I don’t think she’s spectacularly talented, but she’s as good as anyone else and she’s got something.

by Anonymousreply 6June 27, 2020 7:57 PM

This is as good as anyone who's out there now? No it isn't.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 7June 27, 2020 8:03 PM

r6 Mystery? That used to be called the closet. She's one of these "I don't like to put definitions on my creative process, or my life, but I decided to express my queerness in solidarity with all my trans brothers & sisters, particularly people of colour" lesbians.

She also does a lot of society gigs. That's probably the real reason she's everywhere. Rich and/or entertainment people see her at benefits/parties.

by Anonymousreply 8June 27, 2020 8:07 PM

WTF are you talking about OP? She's a singer and actor with multiple albums and films. And yes, she's quite talented and a critic's darling. Just because you're an ignoramus who can't spell her name doesn't mean she hasn't earned her fame.

by Anonymousreply 9June 27, 2020 8:10 PM

Learn her actual last name, idiot.

by Anonymousreply 10June 27, 2020 8:11 PM

I like her music.

by Anonymousreply 11June 27, 2020 8:11 PM

A Kansas City girl. She is in tosScience fiction and has a creative mind. I like her.

by Anonymousreply 12June 27, 2020 8:12 PM

Nope. No.

by Anonymousreply 13June 27, 2020 8:22 PM

She's definitely a bit much, but she's very talented. Her Prince'esque Make Me Feel is the best thing she's done. She's actually a very good actress -- much more subtle than her over the top music persona. I actually think she was the best thing about Moonlight.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 14June 27, 2020 8:23 PM

I think she’s TREMENDOUS!!!

by Anonymousreply 15June 27, 2020 8:29 PM

She made a big impression when she sang with Fun.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 16June 27, 2020 8:38 PM

She was great in "Moonlight" and "Hidden Figures" (I haven't seen the movie about Harriet Tubman yet). I think she's interesting and very talented.

by Anonymousreply 17June 27, 2020 8:54 PM

I remember when she was that British singer who sang about the little birds sitting on her window.

by Anonymousreply 18June 27, 2020 8:57 PM

She’s gorgeous. Not a fan of the music, but I see why others are.

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2020 8:59 PM

She was great in Moonlight and Hidden Figures.

by Anonymousreply 20June 27, 2020 9:01 PM

Since you don't know how to write a proper sentence OR spell her name correctly, OP, you may fuck right off.

by Anonymousreply 21June 27, 2020 9:05 PM

R21 = Claude Monae

by Anonymousreply 22June 27, 2020 9:09 PM

Better than Billie Eilish...and she doesn't look like she stinks!

by Anonymousreply 23June 27, 2020 9:09 PM

Excuse me, R23, but my pussy smells of wine and roses. And yes, the rug matches the drapes.

by Anonymousreply 24June 27, 2020 9:14 PM

She's pretty and androgynous, which is apparently a thing now. You don't really need talent anymore.

by Anonymousreply 25June 27, 2020 9:17 PM

But she is talented. She may not be someone's cup of tea, but that in no way diminishes that she is a talented and accomplished singer, dynamic performer and good actress.

by Anonymousreply 26June 27, 2020 9:24 PM

She ticks all the boxes

by Anonymousreply 27June 27, 2020 9:35 PM

She tickles all the boxes.

by Anonymousreply 28June 27, 2020 9:42 PM

R8, that other closeted, pretty, light-skinned lesbian, Alicia Keys, does society gigs.

I appreciate that she’s not selling sex and pussy all over the place.

by Anonymousreply 29June 27, 2020 9:43 PM

She's gorgeous. That's all I got

by Anonymousreply 30June 27, 2020 9:47 PM

She is pretty, she was fine in Hidden Figures, and her concept albums were good for moment. She seems classy. She's very tiny. I like her.

by Anonymousreply 31June 27, 2020 9:50 PM

I loved her first few albums, especially her second, but she totally lost me when she turned into one giant hashtag. Someone who hates labels & aspires to defy & transcend the entrapment of categories but opens the Oscar's by declaring that finally, a black queer female is seen on that stage is just hack these days. How disappointing that someone who really made a unique contribution let herself resort to the perpetual victim hamster wheel type of SJW cliche. Plus, anyone who labels herself as queer in the interest of progress really has no clue about being progressive.

by Anonymousreply 32June 27, 2020 10:06 PM

At least she is better than Solange....

by Anonymousreply 33June 27, 2020 10:08 PM

Because she isn't the feminine pretty blonde idolized in the West, women aren't threatened that her looks will steal their husband's attention away.

R25 Androgyny also represents female empowerment. Hence, the popularity of Annie Lennox, Marlene Dietrich and Grace Jones.

Plus, she's also photogenic.

I love Janelle and I am so glad she successfully transitioned into acting. She is one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood right now. She has an old school vibe and elegance to her. And she is musically talented.

I wonder if she's still dating this woman

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 35June 27, 2020 10:16 PM

MONAE, asswipe.

And she’s marvelously talented.

by Anonymousreply 36June 27, 2020 10:26 PM

Unique contribution? That whole android shit was a smokescreen. Didn't she say she only dated androids? It beats dating in Canada/Europe, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 37June 27, 2020 10:41 PM

OP is an old racist queen.

by Anonymousreply 38June 27, 2020 10:46 PM

The voice just doesn't live up to the energy around it in this performance.

by Anonymousreply 40June 27, 2020 10:56 PM

Can someone explain to me how OP is a thing?

by Anonymousreply 41June 27, 2020 11:24 PM

I really like her. Her last album was great. And she can act. Who can dislike Janelle Monae? Weird

by Anonymousreply 42June 27, 2020 11:25 PM

I like her, but it’d be great if she removed that superfluous accent mark from her last name.

by Anonymousreply 43June 27, 2020 11:29 PM

I filed her under "we get it, you're lesbian" a long time ago.

by Anonymousreply 44June 27, 2020 11:32 PM

I like her both as a musician and as an actress and I'm a 50-year old white gay man. In interviews, she comes across as very eloquent and fairly smart, which is very refreshing in the era of Kardashian-like creatures who've overtaken contemporary pop culture.

by Anonymousreply 45June 27, 2020 11:51 PM

Most female singers' fans are white and gay.

by Anonymousreply 46June 27, 2020 11:53 PM

she's lucky she hasn't been overhyped.... chooses interesting left of center projects... power to her.

by Anonymousreply 47June 28, 2020 12:41 AM

All I know is her song "PYNK" is .heavily. influenced by Yazoo's "Only You" (+vaginas)

by Anonymousreply 48June 28, 2020 1:12 AM

I thought she was the best thing in the Harriet Tubman movie but she’s awful in that Julia Roberts Amazon series.

by Anonymousreply 49June 28, 2020 2:31 AM

I think she has the one of the best speaking voices ever. So soothing and kind. I want to read me audio books.

by Anonymousreply 50June 28, 2020 3:34 AM

Her early stuff was so good, R32. It used to be fun identifying references to the universe that she built across her music. The Audition and Metropolis were good. ArchAndroid is still one of my favorite albums of all time. I liked Electric Lady less, and can't really get into her new music.

Say You'll Go from ArchAndroid is a lush, homage to Stevie Wonder. Great stuff, IMO.

OP probably pronounces it moan-ETT

by Anonymousreply 52June 28, 2020 4:33 AM

I like her. How is she a “thing?” - like what has she done that’s obnoxious? She’s a good artist, I don’t get your point OP.

by Anonymousreply 53June 28, 2020 4:38 AM

I don't think this thread went the way OP thought it would.

by Anonymousreply 54June 28, 2020 4:51 AM

r50, yes I saw her once on a Colbert and there was something feline about her voice, someone noted she'd have made a good Catwoman

by Anonymousreply 55June 28, 2020 7:07 AM

Janella Monae is your favorite artist's favorite artist.

by Anonymousreply 56June 28, 2020 7:19 AM

She was excellent in Hidden Figures, which was the first I had heard of her.

by Anonymousreply 57June 28, 2020 7:22 AM

I loved the Archandroid era. And the early song with Outkast.

Follow Janelle Monáe, the genre-defying entertainer as celebrated for her solo albums as for her acting roles in Moonlight and Hidden Figures, on her journey through Ralph’s Club. T

he Jazz Age setting where Ralph Lauren presented his Fall 2019 Collection spotlighted Monáe in a show-stopping performance of jazz classics and originals.

She’s a little bit basic for someone who’s been proclaimed as this great artsy cutting edge goddess (a lot of her work is very derivative) but I like her first two albums a lot when her music was more lush and orchestral and less mainstream and digital. And she is BEAUTIFUL. A doll-like face, amazing skin.

Her acting is decent and I think she’ll only continue to improve with the years.

Her voice is thin (you can tell when she properly belts in a song) but like Solange, she has stretched it really well and goes to the uppermost limits of her range.

This cover of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Smile’ she did was sweet.

Janelle says she only wants to hear women rap because male rappers are misogynistic.

[quote] Janelle Monet is thing

ESOL strikes again

by Anonymousreply 63July 4, 2020 5:57 AM

I loved - LOVED - the ArchAndroid and Electric Lady - well, most of them. Her albums suffer from a common ailment for R&B albums (the need to stretch it out with extra bits/interstitials/spoken/comedy bits).

But the last album was just meh.

She does stretch her range and sounds terrible live sometimes.

She's been engaging in every movie I have seen her in, though, for sure.

by Anonymousreply 64July 4, 2020 6:00 AM

Like r64 I liked those albums too. Last album was too pop for me, but, she did do a whole mini movie with the videos of the songs for it, with lots of lesbionic scenes with Tessa.

Also, girl can't take a bad photo.

That Catwoman is a great suggestion, as Zoe Kravitz will looked like a stoned hippie in it.

by Anonymousreply 65July 4, 2020 6:35 AM

Janelle is talented and she checks off just about every intersectional/diversity box so Hollywood loves that.

by Anonymousreply 66July 4, 2020 6:39 AM

She has the ability to cloud men's minds.

by Anonymousreply 67July 4, 2020 6:42 AM

People are overly impressed with her intensity and confidence. But there's not a lot of there there. But because she's black and queer, she's untouchable and you can only say go things about her. It's kinda ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 68July 4, 2020 6:54 AM

She does quite a few tech conference shows (seems to be popular with that crowd).

Honestly, what’s not to like? Her skin is fucking flawless. She seems quite thoughtful in interviews and just an all-around interesting person. Her stage persona is pretty rambunctious (and somewhat gimmicky), but she really seems like a quiet person IRL.

Wonder if that was because she’d been publicly in the closet?

by Anonymousreply 69July 4, 2020 7:05 AM

"She has the ability to cloud men's minds."

You mean men's minds are otherwise clear?

That really hasn't been my experience, but okay.

by Anonymousreply 70July 4, 2020 7:14 AM

Wait, are we still talking about Oprah?

by Anonymousreply 71July 4, 2020 7:15 AM

Janelle Monae put the music industry on blast on Friday, during an epic Twitter rant against misogyny.

The Hidden Figures actress, 34, began her tirade by writing that 'the amount of misogyny from most of men in rap and music is infuriating.'

'I really only ever wanna hear women rapping,' said the Electric Lady singer.

'Women (black women inparticular) have been betrayed by the majority of men for far too long . The systems that enable Patriarchy and abusers of power are burning . Either bring gasoline or burn with them . [sic]'

'Y’all can’t wait to call women every b***h , hoe , discuss violent acts against women, etc for clout in rap, rock, and through out music history. Misogny has NEVER been okay yet it has become normalized. Women didn’t create misogny, y’all did. SO YOU DO THE WORK to ABOLISH IT.'

'The way many RELIGIONS are used to oppress women and prepetuate misogynistic ideals to REMAIN IN POWER must be discussed WAY MORE and ABOLISHED .'

'Yes white people need to do the work to dismantle systemic racism, white supremacy, etc. And yes men (& those who benefit from the systems) need 2 do the work 2 dismantle patriarchy, sexism & misogyny. You must call in those w/ toxic behaviors even if it’s YOU. EVERY DAY.'

'You can love someone and STILL hold them accountable. Love is not exempt of accountability. They can go hand and hand.'

'We are in the reckoning.'

by Anonymousreply 72July 4, 2020 7:23 AM

R72, so she's an angry lesbian. Duly noted.

by Anonymousreply 73July 4, 2020 7:29 AM

Is it true about her and Lupita?

by Anonymousreply 74July 4, 2020 7:52 AM

Maybe women should create their own music genres instead of always squatting on cultural space established by men.

by Anonymousreply 75July 4, 2020 8:35 AM

She’s an African American, Female, Pussylicker - she ticks a lot of boxes to fill the quota

by Anonymousreply 76July 4, 2020 9:10 AM

How was Katy Perry ever a thing?

by Anonymousreply 77July 4, 2020 1:53 PM

R77 two words [italic] Teenage Dream [/italic].

by Anonymousreply 78July 4, 2020 2:56 PM

She’s dating Tessa? I need to keep up.

by Anonymousreply 79July 4, 2020 3:01 PM

She looks a little like Lynn Whitfield in the pic at R40. Very beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 80July 4, 2020 3:40 PM

r79, she DATED Tessa. They broke up last year. Tessa is apparently dating a man named Dev Hines.

by Anonymousreply 81July 4, 2020 3:46 PM

Her music is different. Can't put a genre on it. If you watched a fairly recent Austin City Limits you can see she's a true artist and entertainer. She was so dynamic and talented. Not fake, not auto-tuned, not calling it in.

by Anonymousreply 82July 4, 2020 3:50 PM

Considering that she stole the role of Harriet Tubman from our beloved Julia, I'll reserve my judgment for a later date

by Anonymousreply 83July 4, 2020 3:58 PM

Nia Long is none too happy with movie studios hiring singers for movie roles. Erykah Badu, Lauren Hill, Mary J. Blige, Janelle and a few others have been branching out into films. She was interviewed on this subject years ago.

by Anonymousreply 84July 4, 2020 4:27 PM

R79, Thanks for the update.

by Anonymousreply 85July 4, 2020 4:53 PM

Janelle Monet rocks, I LOVE her, the OP can go sit on a chainsaw.

by Anonymousreply 86July 4, 2020 5:11 PM

MONAE

Jesus, the asinine OP has me misspelling her now.

by Anonymousreply 87July 4, 2020 5:12 PM

Say her name!

by Anonymousreply 88July 4, 2020 7:48 PM

OP is asinine for assuming her parents knew how to spell "Monet"?

by Anonymousreply 89July 4, 2020 7:49 PM

She was a very good contrast to the Naomi Harris character in Moonlight. She gave off true maternal vibes I didn't think she was capable of. She's a good actor.

by Anonymousreply 90July 4, 2020 7:54 PM

In 2010 i was listening to LA’s top notch radio station KCRW when i heard this amazing song, i had to wait in my car after the song ended to hear the DJ announce who was the performer - Janell Monea, song was “Sincerely Jane”

Wow you don’t hear contemporary songs with such orchestrations like that any more.

Plus, she’s become a fashion icon with her unique androgynous black and white color styling.
