Schitt's Creek Fans: Where did the Roses live before Schitt's Creek?

David talks about living in New York, but the mansion in the opening scene is clearly somewhere else, ditto the Christmas party flashback and comments about Jonny installing a basektball court for David for his bar mitzvah.

Is it ever explicitly stated or are we supposed to assume it was either a suburb of NYC or Los Angeles or wherever it is in your head that people like the Roses lived?

Thanks--if anyone will know it is DLers

None of these hosers have ever left Toronto.

by Anonymousreply 1June 26, 2020 3:19 PM

They were definitely from New York, the show makes that clear. Remember Moira worked in soaps which are filmed in New York.

Yes their mansion would have been outside the city somewhere. Jersey, Westchester County, Conneticut, who knows.

[quote] Remember Moira worked in soaps which are filmed in New York.

I beg your pardon... Casts of the 4 remaining soaps - Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital...

by Anonymousreply 3June 26, 2020 3:53 PM

Yes I recognize things have changed, but traditionally New York was the epicenter of soaps r3.

by Anonymousreply 4June 26, 2020 3:58 PM

I just watched one of a million youtube interviews with the cast: they don’t want to say if usa or canada. The town is in canada - theres a moment in a later season that you see a sign for toronto ( a mistake). I just finished a marathon of sc. - fun show.

by Anonymousreply 5June 26, 2020 4:06 PM

I always thought they lived in Beverly Hills or somewhere thereabouts.

by Anonymousreply 6June 26, 2020 4:10 PM

They just want you to think that once they were in the big cities (and at least spent a lot of time in NYC), and that then they ended up "in the provinces"--but they purposefully don't want you to know which particular state or province Schitt's Creek is in or which city their mansion was near.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2020 7:45 PM

I thought in the final ep that Moira was excited to "go back to LA." Maybe I'm misremembering. And that David lived in NYC by himself, as Alexis was globetrotting and whoring around like Lohan. Whomever said they were vague about where Schitt's Creek is was right. For some reason I always thought it was in West Virginia, though the show did seem to get more Canadian as it progressed.

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2020 8:20 PM

Was not asking where Schitt's Creek was supposed to be -- the Levy's said they purposely left that vague.

Was asking whether it was actually ever stated where they lived previously, e.g., did they say they would move "back to New York" or "back to LA" or did David or Alexis ever mention where they grew up.

Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2020 8:21 PM

David said he ran an art gallery on NYC for a decade but also once said something disparaging about having to go to Brooklyn. Wherever they said they lived before, the writers were clearly not familiar enough with those places to bolster the story with realistic details.

You had to suspend disbelief A LOT with that show but never so much as when it came to their collective backstories. None of it - the soap opera stardom, the Blockbuster-esque empire, David living on his own in Manhattan, the Lohaning - was even remotely plausible.

by Anonymousreply 10June 26, 2020 8:43 PM

If it is rural Ontario, NO ONE from NY would visit them. Backroads BC would be MAYBE reachable for someone from LA who already flies to Vancouver for budget content creation.

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2020 8:48 PM

Then this whole series is disingenuous.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2020 9:10 PM

The show definitely gives away that they're in Canada, because Jocelyn bakes the Roses some nanaimo bars in one episode.

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2020 9:16 PM

It's not about where Schitts Creek is, it is about where they lived when they were rich.

by Anonymousreply 14June 26, 2020 9:53 PM

Jesus fucking Christ, it's not a fucking documentary.

by Anonymousreply 15June 26, 2020 10:00 PM

DeBlasio's NYC is the new Schitts Creek

by Anonymousreply 16June 26, 2020 10:14 PM

I loved Schitt’s Creek, but I thought it was silly that Dan Levy refused to be explicit about it being set in Canada when the Schitt’s Creek universe screamed rural Ontario - though I found that less tedious than his insistence that curdled David was some sort of hot ticket item for the seemingly endless array of attractive pansexuals who lived in and around the town.

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2020 10:43 PM

Did we ever see winter on the show? Because I don’t recall anything like a Canadian winter, which I think would be the big give away. LetterKenny did a winter in at least one if not two seasons.

by Anonymousreply 18June 27, 2020 12:43 AM

Every day was lovely at Schitt's Creek. Everyone had a wonderful North American accent. Everyone dressed well. Everyone was thin and well-fed.

Thus, it must have taken place in North Korea.

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2020 12:47 AM

R18,

Just once. They did a Christmas Eve episode. There was snow on the ground.

[quote]the Levy's

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 21June 27, 2020 2:31 AM

They were from Blaine, MO.

(R18)

Winter is strangely missing from Canadian television. Shooting in winter is much more difficult and expensive, so It's always mostly summer all the time!! A winter season is a special season

by Anonymousreply 23June 27, 2020 2:50 AM

IT doesn't matter, because Catherine O'hara.

by Anonymousreply 24June 27, 2020 2:55 AM

Alexis and Moira read to me like two different types of only slightly-exaggerated LA women you will come across in this city.

David seems more NY.

Johnny seems like a NY-to-LA transplant.

by Anonymousreply 25June 27, 2020 3:30 AM

[quote] curdled David was some sort of hot ticket item for the seemingly endless array of attractive pansexuals who lived in and around the town.

Hardly an "endless array" -- David hooked up with the carpenter, had a drunk/stoned one time thing with Stevie and then met Patrick.

[quote]Moira worked in soaps which are filmed in New York.

Wasn't Sunrise Bay a glitzy night time soap?

by Anonymousreply 27June 27, 2020 10:57 AM

Sunrise Bay was a coastal community plagued by a centuries-old curse.

by Anonymousreply 28June 27, 2020 10:58 AM

I always thought it they were situated in Greenwich CT or a swish Westchester address for the big house with an apartment in nyc too.

by Anonymousreply 29June 27, 2020 11:07 AM

They showed the exterior of their old mansion once, and it's actually the real life Lisa Vanderpump mansion, for what it's worth.

by Anonymousreply 30June 27, 2020 11:14 AM

We never get a whole lot of backstory

David lived in NYC where he ran an art gallery, though he only sold paintings because his parents paid their friends to buy them. He was unhappy and had a shallow group of friends who didn't seem to like him much other than for his money and a string of unsuccessful relationships.

Alexis seems to have traveled full time and had a number of wealthy foreign boyfriends--"Stavros" is mentioned a lot. There's a recurring joke about her being kidnapped by royals in random third world countries. We also see some of her old friends in the "Albany" episode but those girls could be LA or they could be NYC, so no clues there.

Moira's soap seems to have been off the air for at least a decade prior to the start of Schitt's Creek.

It seems where the Roses lived was intentionally left vague so that viewers could fill it in for themselves

by Anonymousreply 31June 27, 2020 12:07 PM

David (Dan) is hideous, and can only act with odd head jerks. I can't stand to watch him.

That has nothing to do with OP's question.

by Anonymousreply 32June 27, 2020 12:13 PM

R16 Ohhhhhh youse a super cunt! But I loves youse.

by Anonymousreply 33July 16, 2020 2:27 PM

The mansion was in Toronto and the Roses were actually from TO, originally. They mentioned it in a few epis.

Had some friends who worked on Shazam during the winter in Toronto, and they said they NEVER want to shoot in the winter there ever again. And these are Swedes from Sweden

Alexis did not sound like she was from New York, she sounded like a West Coast girl..

by Anonymousreply 35July 16, 2020 2:39 PM

I thought it was established they had come from New York. All four kept talking about going back to New York until Moira got the call about filming the soap opera in California and David decided to stay in Schitt’s Creek with Patrick.

by Anonymousreply 36July 24, 2020 7:52 PM

It's very Long Island Jappy.

by Anonymousreply 37August 9, 2020 5:34 AM

They used the exterior of Lisa Vanderpump's mansion that burned down.

by Anonymousreply 38August 9, 2020 5:45 AM

R38 Didn’t she just lose her show and restaurant? Rough week for her.
