The order will shorten the name to "Rhode Island" in official communications from the governor's office, including executive orders and citations, and will also change the state's website. It will also remove the word "plantations" from all state agency websites and official correspondence, effective "as soon as practicable."

I trust this won't affect the help at my summer cottage, The Breakers, in Newport.

I guess they want to fight the stereotypical view of Rhode Island.

First of all, I had no idea that was its full name.
Secondly, the word “plantation” is not inherently evil and doesn’t mean there were slaves working on it. The policing of language is getting into extreme territory.

Rhode Island is a small state. It needs a BIG name. Keep the the Providence Plantations in the name. It sounds very grand.

For a small state, Rhode Island has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country. There are so many inlets in the entire Narragansett Bay. I can see why the super wealthy of their day wanted to build their mansions--or summer cottages--in Newport. It's spectacular.
