Some of that is exaggerated. After his parents split, his father lived next door to them for a number of years so they could raise Leo together. He also was involved with Leo's career, suggesting Leo consider doing "Total Eclipse" after he initially passed on it. I'm sure they weren't rich, I've read that the mother held down several jobs.

I've always liked Leo as an actor, particularly his earlier work, for example, Gilbert Grape and This Boy's Life. I wouldn't characterize it as Scorsese keeping DiCaprio's career going. The Beach's domestic box office was weak, but it did OK internationally and Catch Me If You Can was big. Leo had his pick of roles after Titanic and also branched out into producing with some big successes early on, so his pacing and choice of roles was all his own decision.

While there's a definite break in the type of films he made pre and post Titanic, I think he deserves some credit for not going down an easy or obvious movie star path. He doesn't do romantic dramas or comedies, he doesn't do comic book movies, and while he's done a couple action films they were more on the eclectic side. His movie choices aren't as daring as when he was starting out, but they are compared to other actors of his caliber. And let's face it, there are very few if any other actors who could pull such a huge box office return with a movie like The Revenant.

I also have tons of respect for both him and Kate Winslet for "reuniting" with a movie like Revolutionary Road instead of the kind of film their fans desperately wanted to see them in.

I found THE AVIATOR incredibly bloated and tiresome, and it diminished some of Dicaprio's "genius" for me. The acting work showed, which is never good. (Full disclosure: I haven't really liked a Scorcese movie since GOODFELLAS.)

It's just the kind of self-important awards-bait movie that ages badly. Sixteen years later, I can't imagine it's a favorite for that many people. It's faded into irrelevance, like so many other films like it.

I never saw his version of The Great Gatsby mainly because I feel he cannot fit this character. A farm boy of German descent from the Midwest who passed for WASP in Long Island. It's hard to imagine Leo pulling off such a character with nuance, also Gatsby is young in his early 30s and Leo was in his late 30s but doesn't look young from the pictures. Baz Luhrmann must have cast Leo as Gatsby with the gorgeous, enigmatically charming 'Romeo + Juliet' days version of him in mind. Unfortunately, by the time the movie got made, he had as much in common with that guy as you or I, both looks and acting wise.

No inside gossip here, just an opinion. The vibe I get from Leo is that, gay or straight, he has a problem with his masculinity. He doesn't do superhero movies, but most of his films are clearly directed at a (straight) male audience. He's often plays 'tough guy' roles (The Departed, Gangs of New York, Blood Diamond...) that he doesn't have the right physique or voice for, and overacts so badly it makes me cringe. I mean, he overacts most of the time, but in these types of roles it's particularly bad, which makes me think that 1.) a 'typically masculine' demeanor doesn't come naturally to him, and 2.) he's very self-conscious about that fact.

One thing cool about Leo is that he aimed to be higher than a teen idol. He chose his roles very carefully and worked hard at his craft. He was exceptional when young. While The Basketball Diaries wasn't accurate to the book and missed the point, it was pretty close to Leo's actual life which likely was intentional on the director's part. Leo had ambition to do better and escape poverty and decided to pursue acting by his own volition (as opposed to many child actors who are pushed by their parents). He would been a better Jay Gatsby when he was younger and still remembered his roots.
