Boomer ignorance - all my white Boomer colleagues voted for Trump

by Anonymousreply 2June 19, 2020 8:47 PM

I was a college professor a few years ago. About five years ago, when I was teaching a media communications course, my students didn't know who Princess Diana was.

by Anonymousreply 3June 19, 2020 8:48 PM

One of my nephews didn't know what an ice cube tray was for, lol.

by Anonymousreply 4June 19, 2020 8:49 PM

One of my coworkers has never heard of Designing Women! I nearly slapped her.

by Anonymousreply 5June 19, 2020 8:51 PM

I wish I had never heard of Jack Nicholson (or Christian Slater, for that matter).

by Anonymousreply 6June 19, 2020 8:52 PM

My grandnephew didn't know who Helen Hayes was. I strangled that dumbass and buried him my rose garden.

by Anonymousreply 7June 19, 2020 8:54 PM

Back in the '90s, I had a friend born in 1977 who had never heard of Anne Frank. That was my first experience with this type of cultural dissonance.

by Anonymousreply 8June 19, 2020 8:56 PM

R8 - WTF? That is ignorant.

by Anonymousreply 9June 19, 2020 8:57 PM

Well, r9, he did go to a Christian school. That's what we figured it had to have been.

People are known by the company they keep.

by Anonymousreply 11June 19, 2020 9:00 PM

My friends son, who is a high school senior, affectionately calls his gorgeous biracial best friend the "N-word"!!! He probably thinks he's being "thug" but I cringe at the idea of it being said in front of the other kid's parents.

by Anonymousreply 12June 19, 2020 9:00 PM

My great great great great niece had never heard of Fatty Arbuckle. I said “Bitch, I AM Fatty Arbuckle” and put my Parliament out in her eye.

by Anonymousreply 13June 19, 2020 9:02 PM

My 12 year old niece could read an analog clock with hands on it. We were shocked.

She also cant tie her own shoes be cause she grew up with elastic laces.

(My ipad addicted sister is an excellent mother)

by Anonymousreply 14June 19, 2020 9:04 PM

An just graduated from college assistant at my workplace didn’t know what microfilm was when I told her an old newspaper article might be found at the library in that format.

by Anonymousreply 15June 19, 2020 9:04 PM

I made a joke about 'Come On, Eileen' and the little assholes didn't get it.

My 16 year old niece doesn't even remember 9/11! Imagine the gall.

by Anonymousreply 18June 19, 2020 9:12 PM

My young grandson had no idea how to roll down the window in my 2003 GMC pickup. He just couldn't find the button. He had never encountered crank-operated roll-up windows before. The rest of the ride he amused himself by rolling the fucking window up and down.

by Anonymousreply 19June 19, 2020 9:22 PM

The twinks don't know that they're supposed to wash their ass or stinky feet.

by Anonymousreply 20June 19, 2020 9:51 PM

My nephews didn't know car's windows could lifted up manually with a rolling handle. They were like😲😲

by Anonymousreply 21June 19, 2020 10:00 PM

I hope some of you are joking. I’m 40 years old and I just barely know who Fatty Arbuckle is.

by Anonymousreply 22June 19, 2020 10:03 PM

Bitch R22!!!! I’ve got a Parliament with your name on it!!! And a corncob to shove up your what’s gone sour!!

by Anonymousreply 23June 19, 2020 10:14 PM

Hell, OP, at this point, Jack Nicholson doesn't know who Jack Nicholson is...

by Anonymousreply 24June 19, 2020 10:23 PM

My niece called a tow truck because her car door wouldn't unlock. She was too dumb to know the battery in the key fob was dead, and it never occurred to her to use the manual lock.

by Anonymousreply 25June 19, 2020 10:24 PM

R2, You work in the wrong place. My group of seven Boomers are hard-core Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 26June 19, 2020 10:25 PM

R3, That is the perfect example for why I've reconciled myself to never having done anything or been anyone of note.

Fame is fleeting on warp-speed this Century.

by Anonymousreply 27June 19, 2020 10:27 PM

Addressing a snail mail letter -- but to be fair, they have no need for this.

by Anonymousreply 28June 19, 2020 11:02 PM

Why would Gen Z know who Jack Nicholson is? I was born in the 70s and I am only vaguely familar with the actors whose careers were ending in the 60s.

by Anonymousreply 29June 19, 2020 11:25 PM

Nicholson only did a few movies in the 00s and has done almost nothing in the last decade. I'd be more surprised if he DID know who Nicholson was.

by Anonymousreply 30June 19, 2020 11:28 PM

Because, r29, of a little thing called "movies." And awards. And world-wide fame.

And that we all should be aware of our artistic and cultural history before we were born.

Well, whatever. I'm sure there are greater artists than Jack Nicholson whom whoever the hell "Gen X" is has never heard of, like:

Classical composers;

Opera stars;

Award-winning Directors;

Actors in long-running television shows;

Famous comedians;

Artists whose works are in museums;

Museums;

Art;

Etc.

Don't even get me started on how this generation is also likely ignorant of history---any branch, any era, any leading figures, any significant events, etc.

Scientific giants? Fuhgeddaboutit.

Jack Nicholson didn't stand a chance in the Ignorance Sweepstakes.

by Anonymousreply 31June 20, 2020 6:07 AM

Lucky Gen Z, Jack Nicholson is tiresome and plays the same character everytime.

by Anonymousreply 32June 20, 2020 6:14 AM

Zzzzzzzzz

Yet another thread with old near death people bitching about the younger generations

Just die already

by Anonymousreply 33June 20, 2020 6:20 AM

They know Jack Nicholson if they've seen The Shining. Otherwise, no.

I did not know about Juneteenth until this week😔and I am 50.

by Anonymousreply 34June 20, 2020 6:25 AM

A couple of years ago, I worked in an office and we were talking about Trump refusing to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. One of my young, black coworkers had no idea who she was. This kid was a ditz in general, but still.

by Anonymousreply 35June 20, 2020 7:16 AM

"Stevie Nicks? Who's he?"

by Anonymousreply 36June 20, 2020 8:41 AM

[quote] Because, [R29], of a little thing called "movies." And awards. And world-wide fame.

"World wide fame" does not mean elderly movie stars. The world does not revolve around the United States. No kid gives a shit about awards. You've forgotten what it's like to be a kid.

by Anonymousreply 37June 20, 2020 8:44 AM

No one under 22 knows anyone who wasn't "active" more than 5 years ago, except for Marsha P. Johnson, who invented the wheel.

by Anonymousreply 38June 20, 2020 8:44 AM

I get more annoyed by silly queens my age pretending they don’t know something in order to appear younger.

My middle school classmate thought Canada was IN America.

by Anonymousreply 41June 20, 2020 11:59 AM

Some people we assumed would be celebrities forever just don't have the lasting power we thought they would. Nicholson seems to be one of them, and I can see younger people watching something like The Departed and not realizing he was a huge star in the 1970s and 1980s.

I was like that too when I was younger. We all were. We aren't born knowing everything, we have to learn it.

by Anonymousreply 42June 20, 2020 12:14 PM

My young mailman admitted he hadn't seen Ethel Barrymore as Juliet! Naturally I decapitated him and put his head on a spike as a warning to others.

by Anonymousreply 43June 20, 2020 12:15 PM

About 10 years ago some bimbo on TV stated that 'television has been the same for hundreds of years'. Must admit its the sort of stupid ill informed comment I'd expect of somebody working in the TV industry to think and say.

by Anonymousreply 44June 20, 2020 12:18 PM

It’s surprising that someone doesn’t know Jack Nicholson, but as someone else pointed out, he hasn’t been in a movie since 2010.

But, you can’t complain about the younger generation being ignorant when most of us don’t know the current Gen Z actors and celebrities.

Ignorance is not a one way street even though old people always love to talk down on young people. Do you guys not remember being young and listening to old farts complain about you?

by Anonymousreply 45June 20, 2020 12:21 PM

Part of this is with so many forms of amusement people aren’t exposed to anything they don’t already know about or their peer group have an interest in. They can watch all the current content they can handle and don’t get exposed to anything before their time. In the dark ages of three TV channels and no on demand anything we were exposed to old TV shows and movies because there wasn’t anything else on, so we knew who Lucille Ball, Humphrey Bogart, The Little Rascals, etc. were. Even Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello were known by kids who grew up in the 70s.

by Anonymousreply 46June 20, 2020 1:53 PM

My niece wont believed that teenage boys used to shower naked with each others and their coaches in high school

by Anonymousreply 47June 20, 2020 2:02 PM

"Used to"?

by Anonymousreply 48June 20, 2020 2:11 PM

In 1980 there were nineteen year olds who had never heard of Aretha Franklin.
