Tasteful friends: a 15thC manor house in Gloucestershire. £1.5M
Not too big, not too small. Eight bedrooms, more or less, and 6700 square feet.
The carpeting in the bedrooms would go, and the utility of the 3-bedroom annex in its current configuration is a question mark, but otherwise a beautiful house and some great rooms.

Bonus - no disgusting thatched roof.

And it's inside the Golden Triange: Charles' bolt hole, Highgrove is in Gloucestershire, as is Anne's Gatcome Park, and Camilla's private bolt hole, Mill House, is just over the boundary in Wilsthire.
Diana disliked Highgrove first because she disliked the proximity to Anne and Camilla, and second because she was too shallow and stupid to appreciate its possibilities, which Charles eventually realised.
It is something that also will pass to William and Kate as a country home, because it is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, which William will take over when Charles becomes King.

A listed building though, so you can't do anything to it.

It has to be haunted. Very haunted.

That's a good thing. You can, in fact, do a lot to it, you would just have to respect the listed aspects of the building. As Grade II it it probably includes some of the key interior design aspects in a few rooms and the exterior of course;, it really depends on how the property was listed; the Victorian wing would offer a lot more flexibility inside, certainly, Grade I houses are much more difficult since all changes are given much greater scrutiny. I would hope the planning authorities would disapprove a Richard Meir wing, or an attached garage, or a lottery winner's hulking conservatory addition or a wall of glass "to bring the outside"into the kitchen.
People who want to make their own stamp, and hard, shouldn't buy listed houses.

Great to look at - not necessarily to live in. As is true for so many of these “quaint, historic” homes. Something I would have taken on in my 30s - but in my 50s, I know better.

Did Diana particularly dislike Anne? I can't say I'm surprised, but I had never heard that before.

I'll bet it's drafty, it looks drafty. Aren't all old English manor homes drafty?

The doorways would be so low that I could never live in a house like that since I'm 6'2". I'd eventually accidentally bang my head on a lintel so hard I'd die, just like King Charles VIII of France.

Is it wired for cable? I doubt it.

What R12 said. Also, beware: the price appears to be low; Sum Ting Wong.

And why are all the rooms apparently coveren in WTW carpeting? Are the floors that bad? Or are they all stone, and it's just freezing cold?

Replace the facade with stone/ivy and it will be grand.

Imagine the heating bills . . .
Anne thought Diana ridiculous; Diana's probably thought Anne was a dyke.

Good the roof isn't thatched. Thatched roofs are like men's beards. Full of bugs and fecal matter.

This place is high maintenance. Get a studio apartment in Mayfair for the same price and much less hassle.

R20 - The house reeks of England. Its charm is its Englishness. Why would you love a house whose very character is derived from a place you "hate"?

Quite a lot of land too. A lot of work. How many staff can you afford to be ripped off by?
