Katharine Hepburn told Dick Cavett back in 1973 that the men were more in demand than the women.
It may not have been true of her, but it was still surprising to hear her say it.
People like Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, William Holden, Steve McQueen probably hit the casting couch.

Two people have mentioned Darren Criss. Not saying he hasnt but so many people think he has with no proof. Just cause Ryan Murphy is weirdly enamored with him. He gets like that with both actors and actresses who he casts a lot so does he sleep with women too?

I am sure men have sex with Ryan Murphy or his team for parts. So, any good-looking man on his shows. David Corenswet is beautiful.
Tom Cruise was a hooker in NY and NJ. There is no other explanation for his early success.
Keanu, Chris Evans, Lee Majors. Ryan Reynolds, even Clint Eastwood in early days.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 4, 2020 6:02 AM |
Evans started out as a child actor from a theatre family, so I *hope* he didn't have to put out to get his start in show biz.

The Tom Cruise thing baffles me. Did he have a banging body as a young man? Absolutely. I can see him as a rough trade hooker. But I wonder why David Geffen took to him and paid to have his face fixed to make him a star? Surely at the time there were hundreds of other boys with both tight banging bodies and already handsome faces he could have uplifted. We al know Geffen was constantly surrounded by hot young men, many of whom got favors. Did cruise have some kind of dirt on Geffen from some wild party he attended as a young rent boy? Or was Geffen trying to fulfill some kind of Pygmalion fantasy?

IN REGARDS TO CRUISE, i can't think of anyone else who had such a "meteoric" fast rise like him... i mean no connections, no money, hardly any experience outside of a high school play and a couple of plays, gets a small speaking role in "endless love" okay, so that's fine, he got lucky with being more then a extra in that movie, but then he gets "taps" from a small barely any lines role to a prominent role when the original actor for his role got let go for some reason, and then he does outsiders with another leading role in that ensemble and then he gets another leading role in "losin it" and finally hits stardom with "risky business" and then of course superstardom with top gun 3 years later... what i'm getting at , is he went from literally nobody in 1980 to a star in 3 years with "risky business" and a superstar with top gun in 1986...
from nobody to world's biggest star in 6 years???? literally with his resume or lack thereof how did he manage to EVEN GET A AUDITION/AUDITIONS to be in any of these early roles, much less cast in prominent speaking roles? seriously! 99.9% actors with his lack of a resume, training and so on wouldn't get a agent that would even send them out for such roles, they wouldn't get a audition to be cast and they would be lucky if they were getting hired for regional theater or dinner theater roles ESPECIALLY in and around NEW YORK CITY!...
yes, cruise was attractive and eager and super hungry for fame and i guess already had magnetism and charisma on film, but it does make one wonder how he never really had to struggle, got success that fast and in between films in these early roles made enough to live on in a apartment in nyc, when he wasn't staying with mom and step dad in jersey, and making money waiting tables and maintenance man of his apartment building (according to his biographies)....
i truly think biographers have never truly truly explored his early years from 1980 to 1983.... i've never read how he lived in a roach infested, rat infested apartment or had to share a apartment with 4 other people, or had to scrounge for food at various places, or worked 60 plus hours and finding time to audition to survive and so on and so on... i do know that his stepfather gave him some money when he moved to nyc but i think it was only 500 or 5000 thousand dollars i don't remember and that cruise was to have paid him back if he didnt make it in 10 years or less , whatever the amount it wasn't that much even in early 80's cost of living.. ..
if he was a escort, where are any of his clients who have never talked who have proof of some sort?...

As an elder gay, I am always intrigued with the whole Henry Willson school of star making. I'm not talking about the recent Ryan Murphy train wreck version but the actual facts. Obviously, he was gay and many of his clients were a victim or his probably unwelcome advances.
But, I wonder about the few men who seemed to have sneaked through without ever being label as bi or gay. How did they justify doing what if took to get 'a head'. (No pun intended). I'm talking about the late Chad Everett, Doug McClure, Clint Walker, John Saxon, Troy Donahue, Ty Hardin and John Derek. All of these guys were never officially labeled as being gay or even bi and yet they must have had to put out for Willson. Did everyone block it out or just consider it a cost of doing business?

R63... clint walker was indeed a client of henry wilson, but he DID NOT put out for him and made that known at the beginning nor did walker put out for anyone for that matter, hence why his career never reached the heights it could have ( i mean seriously he should have had the career that rock hudson had, since he was handsomer and better built then hudson) and why his career in hollywood was for the most part short lived and he retired to live quietly out of la la land. walker refused to "play the hollywood game"...
don't know about the others you mentioned on your list though...there HAS been rumors and allegations about the others on your list as either gay, bi, closeted or having put out, but NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in any way about any of this in regards to Clint WALKER.... the man was THEE epitome of midwestern values, integrity and being quote "square"...which actually is a great thing.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 4, 2020 4:31 PM |
R60... actually pit had a good resume before he got "thelma and louise"..... a number of tv shows as a regular, tv movies and movies.... cruise got a starring role in a huge hit and became a superstar with risky business after only 3 years graduating from high school and a nobody....
his resume was painfully thin, so much that as i stated before how he even got a audition for risky business or have a powerful enough agent to even get him as a client is "amazing"?.... geffen has gone on record that he had seen cruise in "taps" and that he wanted him as oppose to the many? others up for that role, including the original actor which was supposed to be kevin anderson! in geffen's own words, he wanted someone to play Joel, who was someone he (and others?) would want to fuck... years later, he stated in a interview off record that "despite contrary opinion, cruise is the straightest guy you can imagine"..

From the LA times about Another Day In Paradise:
A major bone of contention for Woods was Clark's friendship with the film's other co-star, 19-year-old Vincent Kartheiser, which Woods says reflected the mentor-protege friendship between Woods' and Kartheiser's characters in the film, though the young actor's manager Mike Cutler says there was no such bond.
"I'm not really sure what Jimmy's talking about," says Clark, when asked about his relationship with Kartheiser.
No Penalty for Showing Up Late
Woods was particularly upset when his young co-star showed up late on the set and Clark did not take him to task. "When someone shows up three hours late, it's a humiliation and a violation of professionalism," he says. "We weren't able to shoot a very important scene properly because of it." (The scene is one in which Woods' character explains some vital plot points.)
Cutler admits his client was late a couple of times, but mainly because he sometimes got lost trying to find the location. (Kartheiser, who has acted in movies since age 5, lives in Minnesota and was unavailable for comment.) While Chin admits Kartheiser was not always on time, he calls the problem "a cultural difference" between the young actor's approach and that of the more seasoned Woods.
"Vincent's style is loose and improvisational," Chin said. "He didn't wear any makeup in the film so he didn't feel the need to show up at his call time."
But that was just Act 1 of the saga. After the tumultuous shoot wrapped in January, Clark moved to the editing room and nearly wound up forfeiting all his hard work. "The stress got to me," Clark admits. "I've taken a lot of drugs in my life. After the shoot I took some. I'm an addict. I have a tendency to do that."
Another problem was with co-star Vincent Kartheiser. Woods began, "Larry met Vincent and took an instant liking—[turning to Chin] you do it, you do this, I can’t handle this properly."
Chin replied, "Oh thank you, very much!"
Woods added, "You’re the Yale lawyer, slither around this, partner."
Tactfully, Chin explained, "I don’t know to what my colleague is referring.

There have been rumors for years that Chris Hemsworth (and Tom Hiddleston too) went above and beyond with Kenneth Branagh to secure the role of Thor. There is some anticodail evidence to support this. Hemworth avoids talking about the audition process or how he got the part, and after the first movie was a hit that cemented Hemsworth's career, he refused to work with Branagh on the second film.

R75... cruise was even hanging out at studio 54 with the likes of warhold and others when he was what 2 years out of high school? how in the world was he even ALLOWED inside that building or ALLOWED to hang out with these famous people? like i stated previously, not only how did he get the auditions, but how did he even get a GREAT powerful agent to get to even audition for his early roles?...
name me another actor how did a high school play, a dinner club play, was sent out for some commercials and not getting them, with no training from a acting school, get a agent, powerful and connected enough to get him a audition to get a role in "losing it" or "taps".... "endless love" was a bit of luck that it was a small speaking role and he was in the right time and the right place as well as the same happening in "taps" because the original actor for his role was fired and cruise happen to be in the right place at the right time again. AFTER the success of risky business he could call his shots for sure, but still he was woefully inexperienced to have continued success until top gun truly made him a superstar where he has remained...
99.9% of male actors wouldn't get these early auditions, wouldn't get a powerful agent to get them these auditions and would have been told you need to bulk up your resume with plays and training and then i'll send you out for commercials and film roles, in fact, one would think that with his lack of success in the commercials he was sent out for and didn't get such a agent would have dropped him, they certainly wouldn't have had him audition for film roles one would think?!.
99% of male actors takes 10 years or so to have success as a working actor, nothing more.. cruise went from nobody to 3 years star and 3 years later superstar! granted his success from risky business to top gun had him deserving that success with top gun and thereafter, it's the 1980 to 1983 years from nobody to risky business stardom that is in question..
his "best friend" the sociopath leader of scientology i bet brainwashed cruise into thinking he indeed was special because i mean look how fast and quickly he became a success in hollywood!.. speaking of miscavige and the allegations of cruise early years before fame, interesting that it has been reported by former high level cultie tom devocht that he was indeed one of the persons who in person was there when miscavige and his wife shelley (not seen in public for over 12 years and counting) like to stay up late and read outloud and/or watch the secret videos filmed of cruise and his auditing information...
it's devocht who in 2 different vanity fair magazine issues about scientology stated that miscavige would both watch the secretly filmed videos and read out loud the transcripts while laughing and drinking expensive scotch to the small "in" group and miscavige would "roll his eyes and say out loud "geez, can you believe it!" and shelly would 'blush" and say out loud "that's gross!"....
so who knows what they were talking about, devocht knows but has said he will never state publicly what he saw or heard beyond these reactions of miscavige and his wife... perhaps the information indeed confirms the allegations and rumors of cruise early years in nyc before he became famous?..

I'm sure there are plenty of guys who had sex with the right people, who didn't become Tom Cruise.

Brad Renfro: The Knoxville, Tennessee native was only 10-years-old when he was discovered by director Joel Schumacher to play Mark Sway, a young witness in a Mafia case, in his 1994 movie The Client.

Unfortunately having sex is a big part of the casting process. Especially for younger unknown actors trying to get a part in a big movie. This also applies to female casting agents who take a male actor to “dinner.”
My biggest objection is over children, including parents who pimp out their kids to pedophiles in show business.

Not really. Keanu was knocking around for years doing bit parts on tv, commercials, kids tv shows and TV movies before he ever got Dangerous Liaisons which lead to Bill & Ted, Point Break and eventually Speed years later.
It's like when someone said to Jessica Chastain that she appeared out of nowhere and she responded by saying she'd been around for years and no one noticed her. Which is true, she was working quite a bit before Zero Dark Thirty she just never did anything remarkable enough to propel her forward.
Tom Cruise on the other hand is a different story.

Jessica Chastain is the Penelope Ann Miller of today. They are two actresses whose career trajectories are baffling and they came out of nowhere! Miller couldn't keep the momentum, so clearly, someone she was fucking was putting her in leading rolls, and she probably got sick putting out to some gross Wienstien type (or Weinstien, himself). Whenever she would pop up in a movie, I used to lean over and whisper in my friend's ear, "Humph. She must do anal."
IN REGARDS TO CRUISE, i can't think of anyone else who had such a "meteoric" fast rise like him... i mean no connections, no money, hardly any experience outside of a high school play and a couple of plays, gets a small speaking role in "endless love" okay, so that's fine, he got lucky with being more then a extra in that movie, but then he gets "taps" from a small barely any lines role to a prominent role when the original actor for his role got let go for some reason, and then he does outsiders with another leading role in that ensemble and then he gets another leading role in "losin it" and finally hits stardom with "risky business" and then of course superstardom with top gun 3 years later... what i'm getting at , is he went from literally nobody in 1980 to a star in 3 years with "risky business" and a superstar with top gun in 1986...
from nobody to world's biggest star in 6 years???? literally with his resume or lack thereof how did he manage to EVEN GET A AUDITION/AUDITIONS to be in any of these early roles, much less cast in prominent speaking roles? seriously! 99.9% actors with his lack of a resume, training and so on wouldn't get a agent that would even send them out for such roles, they wouldn't get a audition to be cast and they would be lucky if they were getting hired for regional theater or dinner theater roles ESPECIALLY in and around NEW YORK CITY!...
if he was a escort, where are any of his clients who have never talked who have proof of some sort?...
R48, I'm certainly not defending Cruise but if he had slept his way to the top (and I'm not saying he didn't), wouldn't those stories have been out there by now? The guy has been a star for over 30 years. If he got there on his back, would we really be saying "No one knows anything about how Tom Cruise got there. No one's ever said a word"?? I mean if we know and have heard stories about all of these other stars (JLaw, etc.) who allegedly got there the same way, what makes Cruise so special that people in the industry wouldn't have spilled the tea on him, too? I just can't imagine everybody is so afraid of his psycho religion that they wouldn't have talked by now.
By no means do I think he's a great actor who got to the top purely on his acting talent, just saying the speculation that he fucked his way there just seems, at this point, possibly a bit far-fetched given that no one seems to know anything about it. Or was David Geffen really his sole benefactor and dropped the world at his feet?

R199 Branagh is attractive so I would have had no issue sleeping with him for fun (which I think Tom H. did). Chris Hemsworth is straight and if the rumors are true, he only did stuff to get the lead in the film. Once it made him a star, he had the power to get rid of Branagh. I'm guessing agents put a lot of pressure on actors to and probably encouraged Chris to do it. I believe he changed his agent after Thor too.

R211 I remember, but there is way more pervy straight content. The only gay stuff was the scene with Stahl nude and the creepy chicken hawk, Lisa Connelly (played by Rachel Miner) telling Marty Puccio (played by Brad Renfro) that people thought he and Bobby Kent were lovers, and, of course, Bobby raping Ali Willis (Bijou Phillips), while watching gay porn. Most of the pervy content was of Bijou Phillips, who is never fully dressed. Though, I may have noticed it more, because Bijou Phillips is one of the most unappealing people that I've ever seen, and I'm not one of those gays disgusted by women. She's just gross. It's not just the character either because I find her repulsive in everything, but Bully really sticks out because the camera really pervs on her in it.
I grew up in Florida and remember the murder happened. There really were rumors that Puccio and Kent had a sexual relationship, though I'm not sure if that's true. The move changed stuff that I thought should've been left in because it explain a lot about the dynamics of their relationships with each other. For example, Kent's family was middle class, his killers were from poor/working class, Connelly was overweight, which was one of the things she was bullied for.

From Wikipedia:
Branagh is a Christian, and noted that he became "much more religious" after listening to Sir Laurence Olivier's dramatic reading of the Bible every morning in preparation for his role as Olivier in My Week With Marilyn
So he's religious and whore at the same time?

Yes, R229. Exactly.

R229 Yes. He cheated on Thompson. I heard he used the casting couch/seduced anyone both male and female to get ahead when he was young, but never that he was gay.

Anyone lucky enough to get Chris Hemsworth is alright in my book. Skasgard is not that good looking in my opinion (I’m in the minority).
Meanwhile, the studio basically begged Chris Evans to take on Captain America. He even turned it down and the studio came back hat in hand.

So Hemsworth is straight but agreed to sleep with Branagh. Was he that desperate?

R237 have you seen Chris’ new 20 million dollar compound in Australia? Whatever he had to do for that roll was 100% worth it based on his Marvel checks. the psyche of a actor gay or straight to KNOW that PEOPLE in the business know what they did to get where they are? and they don't care? regardless if they could use "whataboutism" in their own mind in that "well so and so did it too, everyone here in the audience did it to (i.e. at the academy awards) and so on..

A story I heard about Brad Pitt: A male producer offered him a role in exchange for sex. He responded by saying he couldn't do that because he couldn't cheat on his girlfriend, which was a lie because he was single at the time. The producer asked him who his girlfriend was and Pitt randomly picked Juliette Lewis. Pitt then wooed Lewis to keep up the charade and liked her, so they ended staying together for several years.

Jennifer Lawrence is a good example of an actor who had one hit (or one hit franchise) and Hollywood thought she'd be popular with the public in other roles. But the public only liked her in the one hit she had and didn't give a shit about her outside of that. Hollywood has so many examples like this.

J Law was also riding the David O Russell train during her It Girl phase (SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, JOY, AMERICAN HUSTLE).

Recall, his name also came up in the Teofil Brank (Jarec Wentworth) extortion trial. Porn actor Justin Griggs (Sean Cody's Taylor) was on the witness stand talking about Don Burns, and when the subject turned to favors he'd received from another benefactor, Grigg's didn't want to name the guy, 'because he was very powerful' and the male escort said he "feared for his own safety." But Brank's defense attorney pressed on until he gave the name up, telling the court it was David Geffen.

For the poster asking about David O. Russell:
His last major movie was JOY in 2015--5 years ago. Despite J Law's appeal, it was generally regarded as a a disappointment critically and failed to turn a profit. J Law was nominated for Best Actress, which most people thought was completely undeserved. She lost, though she did win a Golden Globe.
Following the success of AMERICAN HUSTLE and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, JOY was a surprising comedown. Then there's also ACCIDENTAL LOVE, a forgotten movie (with Jake Gyllenhaal) that Russell directed back in 2010 but took his name off of before it was finally released in 2010. Of course, Russell will live in infamy as the man who verbally abused Lily Tomlin (on film) while making I HEART HUCKABEES.
And thank you, R276 for confirming. Yes, he's a prick. He has a new project in development with Christian Bale, which sounds like the right fit to me.

"That's because we've seen her act, R265. I for one am completely certain her awards were bought and paid for."
She's been a good actress since she was a teen. You just don't like her. Different strokes for different folks, but don't accuse someone of "buying" their awards just because you don't like that person.
"His last major movie was JOY in 2015--5 years ago. Despite J Law's appeal, it was generally regarded as a a disappointment critically and failed to turn a profit."
It's literally about a woman who invents a mop - if she hadn't been in it, it probably would have flopped even harder.

"In the first movie I ever say her in, "Winter's Bone," she gave one of the best performances I have ever seen. "
Lawrence is a perfect of "Too much, too soon, too little training".
She has talent, or had, but somewhere in the pressures of stardom and the endless franchise films, she lost what made her a star in the first place. In recent years, she's given bad, lazy, over-it performances, she's diminished as an actor rather than growing. I don't know if she just hates being a star or a celebrity and secretly wants to chuck it all, but I suspect her fab early performances were all instinct and raw talent, used without understanding. IMHO that's why a lot of actors who start as teens fail to grow up into interesting actors, they don't understand enough about what they're doing to grow and develop within their craft.

Re: Kenneth Branagh: their have been rumours about him being bisexual since the late 1980s.
R221 Alexander Skarsgård was actually never offered the part of Thor but was the lead contender for a period of time. Marvel studio head Kevin Feige, pushed for Skarsgård and even had him do a screen test in full Thor regalia. Skarsgård has talked about it and basically admitted he did expect to get cast. However, he was suddenly dropped out of contention and Chris Hemworth (who was a nobody at this point) was unexpectedly cast.
Behind the scenes it's alleged Branagh (who had been given final say on casting) was the one who made the decision to axe Skarsgård from consideration. There is an interesting timeline of events: Skarsgård meets with Feige, and does a screen test. Then he's seen out having lunch in LA with Branagh and the buzz is Skarsgård is about to be cast. Then within a few days of that, Skarsgård is no longer being considered and casting was "delayed" (see link below for an interview with Kenneth Branagh). Then out of the blue a few weeks later, Chris is announced as Thor and it took the industry by surprise.
So, Chris Hemsworth didn't even get a screen test initially. He auditioned but the studio passed. Liam, however, did get a screen test and while Feige liked him, they felt he was too young. Chris' agent used a 'personal connection' with Feige and managed to get Chris in to read for Thor. Branagh than cast him.....
From screen rant: "Finke reports Hemsworth had read for the part before but "wasn't given a test because a casting director had nixed him early on." Apparently, his younger brother tested for the role too, but Marvel passed. William Ward, Hemsworth's rep and partner/founder at ROAR Management, then convinced Marvel's executive Kevin Feige to reconsider. They let Hemsworth read again and it sure sounded like director Kenneth Branagh had a choice in mind 3 days ago, but the final decision was made today."
Read between the lines here: Skarsgård probably lost the part because he wasn't willing to put out probably because he was already established....Chris did what he felt he needed to do to land the biggest role of his career up to that point. After the film, Branagh was released from his contract to direct a sequel and has never worked for Marvel again. Chris never refers to Branagh and rarely talks about how he landed the role. During an appearance on "The View," Hemsworth was asked about he got the part (by Joy) and he totally avoided giving much of an answer.

Jennifer may have been okay in that indie film, but let’s be real. She only became a big star because she rode the pole and slept around for parts. Why did you feel the need to project your own sex trafficking fantasies onto Timothee's casting process? Why do you feel the need to taint Jimmy's name by making him appear as an abuser and a rapist? In Ivory's long and illustrious career in Merchant Ivory that has never been the case.
Besides, Tim has said several times — and I believe him — that he felt honored to have been attached to the CMBYN project from the start. So in other words, he was perfectly safe, fine and very lucky spending time with James ivory exploring his role.

by Anonymous | reply 304 | June 7, 2020 11:34 PM |
R295 I would assume so. It's been alleged that Singer had a particular fetish for twins.
Shawn met Bryan Singer first when he was 17 or 18 (late 1990s) and shortly thereafter was cast in X-Men. Aaron met Singer through Shawn and became close. In fact, Aaron lived with Singer for a period of time in LA...we all know what "living with Singer' entails. I believe he had a number of young men living with him. Aaron apparently blogged about living with Singer, later deleted it, and then years later denied he ever lived with Singer saying it was just rumor. Interestingly, Aaron was never cast in any Singer projects, although he was offered the role of Jimmy Olson in Superman Returns.
My take is that both Ashmores did stuff with Bryan, but Aaron was much involved in what was going on there...like he played an active role in "procuring talent" for Singer.

This thread is predicated on the reality of the casting couch, which means exchanging sexual favours for, in this case, a role or a part in a film. To claim no-one is mentioning sex is disingenuous on your part.
So, your logic throughout is flawed — no, James Ivory is not a predator.

Nope, I’m ambivalent about her personally; I just think her acting has been amateurish and flat in all of her movies that I’ve seen. By way of comparison, Gwyneth Paltrow is a monstrously entitled twatwaddle as far as I’m concerned, but I’m forced to admit that she has acting talent to burn and actually earned the awards she’s been given for her performances.

I've seen footage of Ryan Murphy lovingly caressing Criss' cheek at some sort of red carpet event, so I think we can take that one as a given.
Bomer I don't know. He spent a decade working his way up from soaps to a primetime series lead, and it may be that a combination of looks and actually turning in decent performances kept that work in front of the camera rather than on his back (or all fours).
Bomer I don't know. He spent a decade working his way up from soaps to a primetime series lead,
Just by looking over his history on IMDB -- Carnegie Mellon graduate. Soaps. Multiple smaller roles. Booked Superman but lost it. Attempts at leading shows which failed and then finally "White Collar" which he was undeniably perfect for. After, minor roles in random projects. Indie films. Admitted he turned down 50 Shades of Grey. Other than that his husband reps Ryan Murphy & Greg Berlanti and has for decades. So he uses his connections. He probably also protects him. I agree that he's bland, boring, too heteronormative & has no sex appeal but is attractive. If he were sleeping around for roles he'd likely have landed better ones than the ones he has had (seems like he dies A LOT in shows or movies) or settled with someone who could have done more for his career. There would have been a massive jump like we've seen with other people discussed.

I agree.
Matt Bomer actually seems like a nice guy. But if he were actually putting out to advance his career, man... talk about fucking your way to the middle.
We almost never hear of him lately, but Bomer's MAGIC MIKE bro, Joe Manganiello, is a good example (allegedly) of straight-but-gay-for-the-right-role, if rumors from some years back are to be believed. His marriage to Sofia V did a good job of quashing any/all speculation to that end. OTOH, it may have also inadvertently killed his career.

No way did Branaugh have the final decision about who was cast as Thor. This was a huge movie and the final word came from the studio. They made the right choice because Hemsworth is perfect in the role and Skarsgard or Hiddleston would have been disasterous. He didn't have to fuck Branaugh for it, they gave it to him.

Skarsgard always looks like he's translating from Swedish to Eglish in his head. I know he's fluent but his mannerisms just don't work for me, he's always cold. Even though Tarzen did well at the box office, he was still stiff in that movie I've never seen him do funny, outside of his small part in Zoolander, so I assume Thor would have been more of the brooding type.

The casting of Keanu in DANGEROUS LIAISONS with Uma and Michelle was purposeful. An American cast was chosen specifically for it, and Cécile de Volanges, Danceny and Tourvel are all supposed to be naive at best and just plain stupid. Ken Branagh even did an article about people thinking he's gay recently and he, of course, played with the interviewer as if he'd been open to it but never had sex with another man. I can't find it but the Advocate did a really rigorous interview with him in 1996 where he acknowledged it had been discussed for a long time.
He radiates the kind of persona of men I know who are failures at relationships with women, flirty with men, but then probably could never accept the idea of being gay. Delusions of their own masculinity and desperation for acceptance by others.
Sleeping with somebody is still a useful euphemism. It suggests more than once, to me.
Okay, but that doesn't describe the standard casting couch scenario. You dally with someone once for a role. You might have dalliances with them again for future roles, or dalliances with other people for other roles, but it's not a "sleeping together" thing. As said above, "lying together" might not even happen if it's something like oral sex in an office, which these things reportedly often are. Even quickie intercourse rarely involves lying down; people are bent over or pressed against a wall, or you're "going to town" on a desk top or a conference table or what have you; no one is lying on anything that anyone would actually sleep on. This florid language of "sleeping together" like two lovers in love is ridiculous in this context.
"Sleeping together" does imply more than once, because it implies an ongoing relationship, or a recurring arrangement; not a one time "quid pro quo" transaction. The metaphor of sleeping has an obvious real-world reference; people in ongoing or recurring sexual relationships do often spend the night together and part of that time is presumably spent actually sleeping, but, again, that is not the casting couch, obviously. No one [italic]sleeps[/italic] on the casting couch. Ew.
Now, plenty of relationships up to and including full-blown public marriages feature some sort of mercenary arrangements, even if it's just the old "you raise the kids and I earn the money" model, but those are about more than just sexual favors in exchange for economic opportunity.

"Also I don't think everyone has gotten ahead by giving head. You have to have talent to act."
Well, yeah, when we're talking films that cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars each, it's not like the studio is going to make a billion-dollar decision on the strength of who gave the director the best head!
No, at that level, it's more like which actor can form a "close, personal, collaborative, artist-muse relationship" with the director. And if having sex with the director will help the director realize that a certain actor has a personal magnetism that might translate to the screen, then if that certain actor is really ambitious, he's going to do what he can to make the director see his potential. I suspect that's how Schumacher came to discover and mentor actors like CF, at that level it wouldn't be a cynical exchange of favors.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | June 26, 2020 12:11 AM |
There's also the reality that some directors (many directors?) don't want the strongest, most original, most inspired actors for their projects.
Directors want moderately talented, capable actors who they can control, who will take direction, not challenge them, and not bring their own crazy ideas to the table. Actors who obey. There are a lot more moderately talented actors than truly original ones.
(not to go off-topic completely, but it sometimes works both ways. Meryl Streep is a powerhouse actor who (based on anecdotal evidence) works with moderately talented film directors who do not challenge her or her authority and especially, her interpretation of a role. Meryl gets movies made, successfully, so no one is going to question the process.)

Pitt was PERFECT for that part in THELMA AND LOUISE in every way, including the fact that the character was supposed to be a hot stud muffin, plus his acting in the movie was very good. So I'm not surprised if that role alone set him firmly on the path to stardom. It would be more natural to question how he got the part in T&L, but as for that, obviously it made sense for the part to go to a very young, hot, unknown guy, and they have to come from some place. This was a CDAN blind yesterday:
"By the process of deduction, it looks like this A list mostly movie actor had to hit the casting couch for his first big role. Each person who has come into contact with the executive who was casting that role said the only way to ever get cast was to sleep with the executive. No exceptions."
Some interesting guesses in the comments.

R443's "40 years" in the business leaves nothing but arrogance and Alzheimer's.
Illiteracy and laziness only make dementia work.

Weird that no-one ever said shit about it when 22-year old twink Ralph Macchio stayed in John Avildsen’s NYC apartment for days, while they were casting him for the lead role in THE KARATE KID.

R450 nothing weird about that.

Does the late Corey Haim count, given that for half the time he was underaged and roofied? I feel like he really shouldn’t count, it’s sort of scummy to go there.

Ok this is OT and I have no proof (pure speculation and hearsay) on my part but—why is Jack Grealish suddenly now a guaranteed starter in the England national football squad when before he could not make it in for love nor money despite being good enough because the manager clearly does not like him? He showed up to training camp last year with new long hair and all this newfound sexual confidence...just saying🧐🤔
