I was 12 yrs old in 1968. I knew bad shit was happening and vaguely remembering rooting for the "hippies" but as I get older I want some law and order. Young people's ideology is often misguided and reckless. But this seems to be a replay of that era and it didn't end well for the Dems.

The riots in the 60s and the 70s gave us Nixon, Reagan and the end of liberal ideology for decades. Hopefully, this doesn't lead to another four years of Trump. That would be a truly nauseating result.

The difference being that Trump is making it worse.

Those times, we had unpopular democratic incumbent presidents. They republicans said "Look at all this violence, I can stop it!".

Now Trump is president. The violence and chaos are happening in the country he is in charge of.

Another 4 years of Trump won’t be fixable by the 2024 election in my opinion. The USA will be irredeemably over. Ivanka or Jr. will be installed. This year is our last chance.

As in 1968 terrified white people gave us a Repug president. Dump could not have assured his re-election better if he had planned it. And he did.

The amount of gear these police are wearing is phenomenal and it clearly makes them think they are superhuman.

I am honestly not sure this is going to be a boon for Trump. If he was out giving statements intended to calm, absolutely, but he's making it worse. The LA riots happened in an election year, GHWB took an active role (he even went to LA to survey the damage), and he still lost.

Yes, I can see it helping him. But I don't think that's a certainty.

When you think about it, the only reason police exist is to put down people. That's the reason for their existence. And I can see a future where we won't need traffic cops or drug interdiction cops. All you'll need is enough for burglary and domestic violence. That's it.
