Let’s start off on a light note with some Janet Jackson! This song made me happy. The CD was great as well!

It's great you liked it so much, OP.

Ahh, yes, the days when Sam Smith was still a singular entity and the world was essentially Kardashian-free. How I long for those times! I think we need to start a new era in history: Before Internet and After Internet, or something to that affect.

Grunge Rock & Pop-Punk. Overalls. Thin eyebrows. Club kids. Platform shoes. The OJ Bronco Chase. Rodney King & the LA Riots. Princess Diana's death. Y2K. Friends.

Mariah! Janet!
This is turning out to be wonderfully gay.

Keep the gurl singers coming gurls.

Janet in that video was wearing that horrid shade of dark brownish red lipstick that all women were wearing in the '90s. The '80s had frosted pink lipstick but the '90s had brownish-red lipstick that did no one any favors unless you had olive skin or darker, but even then it just made even the prettiest girls ghoulish under certain lights.
The '90s should really be divided into 2 separate periods if we're talking about music, films, and pop culture. The early half had some great music which included some bands (grunge-influenced or pop) that played actual instruments. It also had interesting female singers who didn't solely rely on looks/ sexuality (Bjork, Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morrissette, Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow, etc...) and they were among the dominant music scene. The latter half was dominated by boy bands, Christina/ Britney/ Mandy Moore, rise of autotune, pop songs about love/ breaking up/ hooking up and little else, a trend that continues to this day. The songs in the mid-80s to mid-90s were more varied, even I noticed that as someone who came of age in the '90s.

Like from 1988 to 1992 is one era
Then 1993 to 1997 is another era
And 1998 to 2001 is another era

why do gays love girl singers so much?

Early '90s music so different from late '90s. A time when girl singers didn't have to show tits and ass to get on MTV. One of my favorite songs no matter what period, Dolores had a sadness in her vocal quality that made this song a classic.

Metal finally died. So there were a lot of former metal guys singing ballads or slow acoustic songs. Some songs were great like this classic in 1991.

for the record (pun!), metal may have fallen off the charts but it has NEVER died

The '90s also had its own ABBA. Ace of Base, dear lord this song was everywhere in mall stores in early '90s.

Careful, r18 (rescue). You’re valuable around here. Don’t bang your head too hard.

Keanu in the early 1990s was on another level of beautiful, I don't think a more beautiful young actor ever existed, both body and face. Of course young Keanu was dim and esoteric as fuck but who the hell was listening to him talk we were all slobbering over his looks.

I remember all the hype around the changing of the century. Y2K. They were predicting massive problems because of computers not being able to change over. I recall nothing major happened once year 2000 began. I could be wrong though.

I moved to West Hollywood in '93. I remember Calvin Klein underwear, white tank tops, cut off jean shorts, yellow construction boots, with a plaid button up shirt at night when it got chilly. I also almost got run over by Faye Dunaway (who was swearing at me) on Coldwater Canyon and was thrilled by it because it was my first celebrity sighting.

That’s fucking hysterical, r25!
I’m laughing here.

Melrose Place, Ryan Phillipe playing gay on One Life to Live, Reality Bites, Lisa Loeb, Deee-Lite. then Dave Matthews hit the scene and it was all over.

R25. I’ve heard of quite a few people almost getting run over by Faye! I don’t think she is a very good driver.

I miss a lot of things about the 90s, but it wasn’t a great music decade. I miss reasonable airport security, a general sense of optimism after the fall of the iron curtain, and of course, being young and thin.

The fantastic Gap In-Store Playlists, of course!

There was a minor renaissance of swing music and swing dancing in the late '90s which I thought was interesting. It was a subculture prior to that, and then you'd see mainstream girls stealing that look and taking swing dancing lessons.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 31, 2020 1:47 AM |
That's largely in part due to the success of the "Swingers" movie in 96.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 31, 2020 1:57 AM |
We got two Courtney Loves in one decade!
I was in high school for the glamorized version, and I still love this song.

I love all the Divas. George Michael created one of the most memorable and elegant videos of the 90s. He was still closeted at this point but just barely...

I long for those halcyon days when Boutros Boutros-Ghali was UN Secretary General and Gateway 2000 shipped its PCs in boxes patterned after Holstein cow markings.

I loved the early 90s - Madonna, Janet, En Vogue, Color Me Badd, new jack swing one hit wonders, The Simpsons, 90210, Terminator 2, Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead, Fresh Prince, In Living Color.
I loved the youthquake of the late 90s - Teen movies especially horror, Dawson's Creek, Buffy, The Spice Girls, Britney, BSB, N Sync.
But I don't know, there was something about 1995 and 1996 that just sucked. Shows like Roseanne and Melrose Place jumping the shark, Alanis Morisette, Blues Travelers, Hootie & The Blowfish, Die Hard With A Vengence, Val Kilmer as Batman. It was drab and dull. I hated those 2 years.

I can't believe the '90s are as distant to us now as the '60s were to us then! I remember being a middle schooler in the early '90s and feeling like an outcast because I only liked old music from the '60s and '50s. To tween me, the early '60s seemed ancient. I suppose because a lot of the footage from that era is in black-and-white.
