I need a 65 inch smart TV. There are so many choices it’s mind-boggling! I am partial to LG but open to other brands. I haven’t looked at TVs in a while and there’s always new technology. I think the newest thing is called nanocell? Anyone have experience with that? Any advice, recommendations would be great thank you.

I have a 75 inch LED Vizio. It’s nice but I miss my plasma.
Black and near black is better on a plasma.

That’s great R2. I didn’t buy my first flat screen till 10 years ago. Before that I had a TV that I bought from my friend for 50 bucks. It must’ve weighed 100 pounds! Now I can’t imagine having the tubed TV. You should look into upgrading. Even just a basic flatscreen. You would be amazed with the difference!

I need a new 55 inch TV with no "smart features" that track your viewing habits and install updates that can brick your TV even if you try and opt-out of them...Samsung.

Honey, no one NEEDS a 65 inch smart TV...you WANT one.

Just bought a Sony 43” model. Room won’t take a 55” or 65” model, even though the 55” (from Costco) would have been cheaper than the 43” (from Amazon). Also got a sound bar and subwoofer. Replaced a 13 year old Sony Bravia 40” model. Very pleased with Sony products. Have a SLR Sony camera, had a Sony VAIO laptop before we went MAC.

I recommend Samsungs purchased from Costco. That’s all I got, OP.

I adopted a gorgeous, seldom-used 55" panasonic plasma tv a couple of months ago following the death of my 30 year old Sony Trinitron box.
Having a hell of a time locating the model-specific base for it, so now it's propped up on the floor. Sure, it weighs a ton, but nothing beats this beast's picture clarity. I'm so lucky to have found it!

2 1/5 years ago, we bought an entry level 55“ Vizio for about $500 from Best Buy. Great picture, very happy with it until the tv went black due to our nephew leaving the TV on “pause” for 8 hours on a very hot summer day. We had sound, but no picture. I called a tv repair man and he said it wasn’t worth fixing. He said when we buy a replacement, get the longest warranty offered because most of these TVs last only 2 to 3 year.
Went with Vizio again, this time a 65 inch V series, entry level tv for $491 (Black Friday special ) with a 5 year extended warranty for $129. Immediately I did not like the picture or color, and with in 4 months the right side of the tv was darker the left side. I google it and turns out it’s a problem with this model. However, before we got to use the warranty to fix it, while carrying a large box, I tripped and my elbow smashed into the screen and cracked it, which of course is not covered by the warranty. So now in less than 3 years, we are in the market for a 3rd TV. This time we’re to going to try a mid level priced Samsung.

Why do people never provide sufficient information when asking stupid questions.
How much do you want to spend.
How big of a TV do you want.
Besides watching TV, what else will it be used for - movies, gaming (xbox or playstation, or computer). How many and what other devices will be attached and what types of connections are required.
Will you be hooking it up to a sound system?

You’re absolutely right R20, my bad.
I would like a 65 inch smart TV. I’d like to spend less than $1200. I will use it for watching TV, movies, YouTube, Netflix, gaming. So then a PS4 will be connected to it. No external sound system.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 31, 2020 7:24 PM |
r22 - A few things points to consider.
$1200 is an odd price point. You may want to consider going up in price ($1500-1700) or down in price (below $1000). At that price point, you're probably not getting the benefit of spending that amount of money. The additional stuff you get going up from $1000 are probably not worth it in terms of "value" - you may want to check reviews for TCL 65" Class 6-Series 4K UHD QLED. It generally gets good reviews and is usually on lists for "best value" for the money. It runs about $750-ish.
Others worth investigating: Vizio M series; LG Nano 8 series.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 31, 2020 7:44 PM |
The technology keeps changing and prices continue to decrease. We often forget that our parents paid $600 or more for the old console TVs that were not as sophisticated as today's $700 TV. Depending on what you wish to spend is the first criteria. From that point, I always look to a non-biased reference that have no duality of interest or conflict of interest in their review. CNET is often the best. Surprisingly, Best Buy offers a great review link for their TVs that is non-biased.
When I purchased my 65" in late 2018, I set a top $ at $1200. After a lot of research and comparison shopping (Best Buy, Costco, Sams), I chose the Vizio P. They use a technology that is cheaper but similar in production to the QLED used in high end TVs.
I am very satisfied and would consider them again. I know that TCL and others are in the low end market. They may be very good but there is no 4-5 year track record.

However, if you are a Costco member, I would start there, see what you can buy for $1,200. So easy to return stuff there. (Not that you want to be returning anything.)

I like my LG OLED, but it has burn in issues if you watch channels with a persistent logo. They replaced the first one, and now the second is just as bad.

[quote]I like my LG OLED, but it has burn in issues if you watch channels with a persistent logo. They replaced the first one, and now the second is just as bad.
Most newer OLEDs do not suffer from burn-in. While it's possible, it's not likely with normal usage. Most so-called "burn-in" today is simply a form of image retention that goes away after a while. You'd definitely have persistent image retention before you'd actually have burn-in.
However, there was recent news of some LG OLEDs with burn-in problems - so it's not impossible.

OLED burn in tests after a year. Very dry content but a good watch. Basically they say if you watch varied content you are fine. If you watch CNN constantly for a year - you might get burn in.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 1, 2020 3:28 PM |
The MSNBC nightly line up caused it. I am fully aware that this is not “normal use,” but it’s not that outside the pale. Samsung’s QLED is apparently not afflicted, so I will replace with a different brand. Again, it happened twice, while LG was insisting it wasn’t possible. I am also puzzled why CNN, etc. don’t shift their logos.

I lost one to cat litter, really. I had a wonderful 18 year old cat who suddenly got sick and used the litter box a lot in a bedroom so I was constantly pouring new. The dust went into the top vent and the screen actually looked like water was dripping behind it. Insured so I got a new one.

My first flat screen was a 50" plasma tv, and it seemed HUGE.
When I upgraded, I got a 65" plasma. Again, it initially seemed HUGE.
I now wish I had gotten 75" or more.
The lesson that most of us on DL knows very well - 10 inches is totally worth it.

TV are so disposable today. Are you looking for cheap or high end? I prefer the cheap TCL Roku tv. Its a 4k 45"...plenty big for me as I live in a studio apartment.

I just purchased a 4K HDR 43" TCL 4-series for my bedroom for C$319. The picture quality blows away that of the 11 year-old, 40" Samsung it replaced. It's also superior to that of the 2012 55" Panasonic LCD I have in the living room (although the Panasonic has MUCH better viewing angles). 4K videos from YouTube look stunning. I can't believe how inexpensive it was, and that was the store's regular price!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 2, 2020 3:57 PM |
R6 simply don’t connect the TV to WiFi or Ethernet and it can’t update or track you. Connect an Apple TV instead and use that for streaming and channels. I’m not in the United States and it’s illegal here for a TV to *have* to connect to the internet to operate. Your mileage may vary of course.

[quote]It's also superior to that of the 2012 55" Panasonic LCD I have in the living room (although the Panasonic has MUCH better viewing angles).
Panasonic LCD TVs were never particularly good. The plasma ones were and continued to be rated among the best picture quality until OLEDs became mainstream, rather than enthusiast.

While the tv may not be terrible, you can certainly spend way too much for the quality and features that you get.
