OMG!!! Unbelievable video.
When I was in college and AIDS was just starting to emerge, my roommate's mother was terrified because she was eating Ayds candies and she actually thought she was going to die of AIDS because it.

OP, thank you! I forgot about Ayds! They were little chocolate chewy squares and supposed to curb your appetite or boost your metabolism or do something to make you lose weight. We used to steal my mom's Ayds because they tasted like fudge!

"I've always wanted to lose weight, and now, with Ayds, I can!" My mom used to eat these...with a cup of tea or big glass of water before dinner. They were supposed to make it easier to eat less.

I used to listen Paul Harvey on my lunch breaks during my summer job in high school. It was always hard to tell when he was starting an ad because he read them with the same cadence. One day he started in on how this wonderful health product was getting damaged by its unwarranted association with this new disease AIDS.
Once the commercial was over I never heard of Ayds again.

There was a sister product called DEXATRIM. I remember that one from ca. 1983/84.

Dexatrim is still around and they still have commercials on TV.
Apparently, there's nothing in its ingredients that are proven to help you lose weight, though.

How come Aids killed Ayds but the Corona virus doesn't seem to be hurting Corona Beer at all?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 15, 2020 11:51 PM |
R7 We don't know that yet...

I remember these in our kitchen when I was a kid, what the hell were our mothers ON in the 70s?!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 16, 2020 12:09 AM |
My mother always had them on hand, too. I was skinny as a rail but I'd steal one from time to time.
After AIDS came into being they eventually went out of business.

R9 Mostly speed. Doctors would overly-prescribe that to suburban moms for weight loss.

Fortified with Benzocaine.

Mama had lotsa pills too. I’d stealed the blue ones. I like blue!

I remember trying them and you were supposed to take them with a "hot beverage," presumably coffee or tea, neither of which I drank. So I used to drink them with warm water. They did taste pretty good, though. Came in several flavors.

They weren’t prescribed, were they? My mother was overweight and always dieting and tried these and now I’m overweight and should diet. Would Ayds help me?

Not anymore.

R15 No, you could by them off the counter in the store.

I ate figurines

It's lucky for Toyota that they don't still have the Toyota Corona. It was larger than the Corolla and it was sold in the USA in the 70's into the early 1980's. It was phased out in 1982 and replaced by the Toyota Camry.

I wonder if the Rona virus will be the end to Rona Barrett's career.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 16, 2020 1:20 PM |
AIDS was also very effective for weight loss.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 16, 2020 1:27 PM |
Ayds and Figurines were basically like Slim-Fast. They gave you a regular infusion of sweet junk food so that you were less likely to go on a binge while you were dieting.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 16, 2020 1:40 PM |
The Ayds diet plan worked best when supplemented by the Mark Eden Bust Developer!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 16, 2020 2:12 PM |
Those AYDS commercials still crack me up. As a kid my dad worked in the wholesale grocery business and was always bringing weird stuff home as samples from food manufacturers. He brought a case of Figurines home one time and my brother and I ate them for after school snacks for weeks.

Did they do a tie in with Oops, I Crapped My Pants?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 16, 2020 3:08 PM |
r20 My first new car was a 1976 Toyota Corona.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 16, 2020 3:31 PM |
"MMMMmmmmm! Candy!"
My mom had a box of chocolate Ayds that I'd steal from. They were like something in between a Tootsie Roll and a Space Food Stick.
Figurines had way better commercials: Fiiiiiiiguriiiiiiiiiines! Do a lady proud!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 16, 2020 5:14 PM |
I begged for Figurines at the grocery store so I could look glamorous and thin. I was a 5 year old gayling.

R28 "Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch!" They don't write 'em like that anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 16, 2020 6:58 PM |
R24, and with the ThighMaster, too. You'll have giant boobs and become a crazy right wing nut with thunder thighs.
Ms. Sommers looks a bit plumb in this pic, time to hit the Ayds Suzanne!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 16, 2020 8:04 PM |
Oh, I thought R18 chomped down on these before dinner, I didn't realize Figurines was an actual product.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 16, 2020 8:06 PM |
Figurines were delicious and nutritious!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 17, 2020 12:05 AM |
I wish I had Ayds right now.
