I worked with Willie Olsen from Little House on the Prairie - Jonathan Gilbert, who is also Sara Gilbert's and Shit bra's brother.

Several former child actors became lawyers like Jeff Cohen, Staci Kenan, and Josh Saviano. Lara Jill Miller worked as a lawyer for awhile. IIRC, she hated it and then started doing voice work for cartoons.
Former child actor Mike Vitar from The Sandlot and one of the Mighty Ducks movie is a firefighter.
Jamie Walters who was on the short lived show 90s show The Heights and also played Donna's abusive boyfriend on 90210 is a paramedic and firefighter.
I also recall some former child star from the 70s became a veterinarian.

Melissa Gilbert writes in her book that Jonathan just walked out of the house one day, and never came back - cut off all contact with his family
She has not spoken to him since that day he walked out, and it has been like over 30 years.

Mike Teevee, Paris Themmen, has worked in casting, photography, and the travel industry. Veruca Salt, Julie Dawn Cole, continued acting until 2013. Since then she has become a psychotherapist. Violet Beauregard, Denise Nickerson, continued acting in small parts and voice-over work for some time, but eventually moved on. She passed away in 2019.

R36 even if they could not get work I think they made a wise choice. The actors who wind up really nuts are the ones who stick around Hollywood for years even when it's clear things aren't working out. And that doesn't just go for acting. Matthew Keesler on why he left California for Portland Community College:
"Last May I realized that we would run out of money in ten weeks. I had been struggling as an actor in Los Angeles while my wife taught piano lessons. My son was about to start preschool. Although I happened upon success earlier in my career, I hadn’t worked in over a year. We had stretched our budget to its limit. My wife and I cobbled together a plan: we would sell our house and bunk up with my in-laws while I churned through the prerequisites for nursing school.
I enrolled at Portland State, but because my parents-in-law lived in Oregon and we were coming from California, I was considered a non-resident. The tuition floored me. I would have to borrow huge loans. If I were not accepted into nursing school, I would have to find a job and start repaying those loans immediately. Having recently clawed our way out from under the debt of owning a house, incurring a new mountain of debt chilled me. I ditched that plan and enrolled at Portland Community College.
The safety net of Community College caught me before I hit bottom. Without the low cost and guaranteed admission at PCC, I would have had to take a minimum-wage job to support my family. Getting into a private school was impossible. Although I had attended the Juilliard School of Drama, my grades weren’t stellar, and my old acting teachers wouldn’t remember my name, let alone write me a good recommendation. Being a recent transplant from California also decreased my eligibility for scholarships. I needed an inexpensive education that would help me land a job. I needed a place to start over. Portland Community College offered me the opportunity to improve my academic record and work toward a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Because PCC is allied with Oregon Health and Sciences University, OHSU will accept my nursing school credits. The possibility of earning an affordable four-year degree cannot be underestimated. As hospitals strive to fill positions with the best candidates, and nurses take on an increasingly important role in health care, the BSN has become a crucial element in securing a job after graduation. Enrolling in community college is giving me the chance to enter the work force with the training I need to succeed.
As the demand for specialized knowledge in the workplace escalates, the need for a four year degree likewise increases. Community colleges offer an education to those students who are willing to work hard despite past failures or hardships. By offering a Baccalaureate degree to students, community colleges would be acknowledging the current need for degrees beyond the associate’s level. They would also be enriching the community by turning out graduates more qualified to concentrate on and become experts in a particular field. Although I my monetary resources had dwindled to zero, I had the initiative to strike out on a path to self-actualization. Luckily, my community college met me half way."

John Friedrich was a 70's actor in lots of popular television shows, and starring roles in films like The Wanderers, Thank God It's Friday, The Thorn Birds, Almost Summer, Fast Walking and opposite John Travolta in Boy In The Plastic Bubble. He worked with big names and directors and really seemed to have a big career laid out before him, then it all seemed to just stop. Every failed actor and actress thinks they can waltz into real estate, and because stupid people go gaga over celebrities, they usually do pretty well.
I once worked for a large sales promotion company with a large travel component that hired only very attractive people to serve as tour guides. They weren't hired for their smarts. The ones who didn't wind up marrying clients all went into real estate.

by Anonymous | reply 138 | May 10, 2020 10:37 PM |
I'm one of the posters [R137] is calling an idiot, because he misread what I said about being married with kids. I pointed out that the actor in question didn't acquire the wife and kids until after his acting career was over -When it would no longer be a career boost to be perceived as straight (if he actually were gay). In other words, he had a wife and kids because he wanted a wife and kids, not because he needed a beard. Sorry folks, not every hot young actor is gay. Even ending up on a casting couch in search of a job doesn't make you gay, Brad.
Yeah, I want to fantasize about these hot guys as much as the next DLer, but I'm a show biz professional, and I've known a helluva lot of straight actors in my time. Hell, my straight roommate in college was a nurse for years before he went back to medical school and became a doctor. The actor doesn't have to "prove" to anyone that he's straight. How do you want him to prove he's not gay? By being a homophobic jerk?

There seem to be different reasons for leaving acting and show business. Matt Keeslar just couldn't make ends meet, with a wife and family, so he had to go do something else. But some actors (Greta Garbo comes to mind) just get very tired of it. Sometimes they return, but more often, they don't.
It was pretty shocking for me to hear Maggie Smith say, the theater is a grind, on that Dames show.
But it is a grind, even for a big star. And movies are worse.

R121 Brandon Call was last seen working at his parents gas station in San Diego. That was over a decade ago though. Pictures from that around time showed him not aging very well.
Angela Watson apparently became a big fundie and opened an foundation to keep child actors from being taken advantage of. Her parents snatched most of the money she earned as an actor.

R158, a couple of years back on Reddit there was a former child star who anonymously posted about what it was like to work on the set of a successful family sitcom in the 90’s. Apparently there were a lot of child predators, and he and another boy his age on set were molested by a producer. They eventually gathered the nerve to tell the female star of the show and her response was “Well, you wanted to be in show business...”
Some Reddit sleuths were able to deduct that it was most likely Josh Byrne. If so, that would explain the weight gain. It was probably emotional eating and trying to look less appealing to his predator.

Andrea Naschak was plucked out of porno (aka porn actress April Rayne) by director Joel Hershman to appear as the bawdy, trouble-making stripper Sabra in the 1992 comedy HOLD ME! THRILL ME! KISS ME! She's amazing in the role, is central to all the film's best moments, and practically steals the show opposite Sean Young, Adrienne Shelly, Max Parrish and Timothy Leary.

no. the movie was sold to a distributor who sunk considerable more money into it re: marketing. so they made most of that money. the directors/actors received a fraction. they were just psyched to sell it (they didnt think it was going to be as big as it was) so they didnt negotiate for any of the box office receipts.

It's not quite the same, but Darlene Love worked as a maid, sometime after her first success.
"After she parted ways with The Blossoms, Love went through some rough patches. For a while, to make ends meet, she cleaned houses — while secretly still driving her car from the glory-days, which she was loathe to give up. She parked it down the street, so employers wouldn't see. "They can't have a maid cleaning their house that has a Mercedes!" Love quips.
Eventually, Love was coaxed back into the music business by a serendipitous sign. "A wonderful thing happened while I was cleaning this one lady's bathroom," she recalls. "My record came on the radio." It was Darlene Love's 1963 song, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." "I just looked up and I said, 'Okay, I hear ya, I'm outta here.' Not that I think anything's wrong with that kind of work, but I was given this gift and I wanted to use it." ...

Good grief, that link in R162 to the Reddit piece about the alleged former child actor revealing some awful shit about working on a sitcom in the 90s sounds like total made up bull shit.
Their excuse that "well, it was the 90s and stuff like this just happened" is such twaddle. Film and television sets, especially big union studio are pretty strict about minors and parents/guardians being around at all times.
Now, did incidents happen? I'm sure they did but the Reddit post sounds like fantasy pedo porn involving child actors sexually frolicking with adults on a sound stage at Sony or Warners. It's farfetched.
Oh, and the parents of this alleged abuse victim also stole all their money, something else that has been difficult to do for many years since child actors have the bulk of their income put into trust until they are adults.
Reddit is proof that any nut can show up and make crazy claims and a bunch of nutters will show up in support.

On a recent "In Bed with Nick and Meagan" podcast, Whoppi Goldberg said it was the late Elizabeth Taylor who advised her to get a "gift" from the producers every time she worked. Elizabeth explained to Whoopi that every one else gets a cut when an actor works - the actor's agent gets 5%, the manager gets 10%, the attorney gets about 10%, and so on and so on.
Whoopi and Megan also agreed even the most successful actors work only sporadically. Whoopi said that by taking Taylor's advice, she had ensured she got something all her own from each acting job, and she had a beautiful collection of "gifts" that reminded her of every job she'd had since she'd become successful.
