Just came here to post about this. 'Big' news in Minnesota. A friend thinks there's more to the story and he didn't get fired for the Facebook post. I don't know.

It doesn't really matter if he was right or wrong or if he was accurate in his assessment. He publicly embarrassed his employer on social media and has learned that actions have consequences. I don't know why seemingly intelligent people have a difficult time learning that social media isn't a private conversation and your employer may take a dim view of anything someone writes that can be seen as putting them in a bad light.

R50 is, of course, correct. The problem here is that broadcast corporations encourage their on-air 'talent' to be very active in social media. It creates publicity for the broadcaster and loyalty for the talent and, therefore, for the outlet. In short, shifting its public relations efforts onto the talent themselves.

That inevitably sets up people to be shot down. They are forced onto Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. If they don't participate effectively there, that will be a problem when contracts are renegotiated. Being forced onto social media with a mandate to be entertaining and rack up followers is risky place to be. As far as I can tell, in this instance, even Sven's telling the simple truth was not viewed as a good defense by his management.

So... if the truth doesn't work as a defense and if honestly held opinion doesn't work either, then it seems the talent have been pushed into an untenable position. If the station wants to control the message, the corporate P.R. department should do the fucking P.R. I hope Sven's union defends him vigorously against the unjust termination.
