Can't Hardly Wait (1998)

I was familiar with the soundtrack of Can't Hardly Wait but didn't watch it until recently. It surprised me how bad it is from beginning to end. It tries so hard to be like Dazed and Confused, Fast Times at Ridgemont High or a John Hughes movie.

Did you see Can't Hardly Wait when it was released? What do you think of it?

Jennifer Love Hewitt wanted so badly to be a movie star!!

I was 10 when it came out. I only remember this cute goofy guy and JLH cleavage.

I just remember it for Yaz's song "Only You" playing in the movie. And Melissa Joan Hart making a brief cameo. It's a pretty forgettable movie.

The most memorable part is the Replacements' song:

This was the first or one of the first movies to be an "agency package" where the actors, bands, writers, and most of those involved were booked by the same agency. Which is probably the reason it fails on so many levels and never is believable.

To paraphrase Regina George, "stop trying to make Jennifer Love Hewitt happen, she's not gonna happen!".

R3 as well as Melissa Joan, a lovely teenaged Amber Benson also cameos in a busy ensemble scene, where she appears to be handling a banana in a strange way while under the influence of something.

Seth Green has stated in the past that on this shoot he fell into an unrequited infatuation with Benson, but could only admire her from afar being shy and not having any scenes with her (he had to make out with and fall for the character played by Lauren Graham). Interestingly just a few years later they both came together again to work on Buffy, even having a couple of episodes with two-hander scenes between their characters (Tara & Oz), though nothing came of that as Benson was dating a different Buffy co-star and Green didn’t stick around the show for long.

With all of the supposedly budding movie stars in lead roles, Selma Blair, who plays "Girl Mike Hits On #1", is practically a background actor with two lines, ended up with the biggest film career of all of the cast.

A year later Cruel Intentions was released, while she was starring in "Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane" and then was cast in Legally Blonde.

Ethan Embry is a prime example of becoming hotter with age. Seth Green used to pop up everywhere but it feels like I haven't seen him in years.

by Anonymousreply 9April 27, 2020 10:25 PM

Wow, I don't even remember that R7. Didn't Amber reveal in an interview that Alyson Hannigan was mean or cold to her on set?

by Anonymousreply 10April 27, 2020 10:33 PM

I saw it in the theater when it came out. I went in with really low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The cast is likeable and it has a low-stakes plot...I think. I forget what happens exactly but I don't remember hating it.

Four cast members were cast on "Six Feet Under": Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Peter Facinelli, and Eric Balfour.

R12, I don’t think Eric Balfour was in Can’t Hardly Wait, you’re confusing that film with another JLH film Trojan War.

by Anonymousreply 13April 27, 2020 11:23 PM

Lauren never ages, it's crazy.

by Anonymousreply 14April 27, 2020 11:23 PM

R13 Eric Balfour played the Hippie Guy if you click the imdb link

The weird thing about the movie was the conceit that nobody knew who Lauren Ambrose’s character was because she was a quietly sarcastic everywoman and wasn’t into high school bullshit -yet Lauren Ambrose was about 20 times more naturally compelling than every other actor on screen, and Jennifer Love Hewitt was supposed to be the unattainable goddess and she seemed like a rabbit with a blowout.

by Anonymousreply 16April 28, 2020 1:42 AM

American Pie was released a year later and was everything Can't Hardly Wait wished it was.

[quote] Jennifer Love Hewitt was supposed to be the unattainable goddess and she seemed like a rabbit with a blowout.

I never got why she was considered so hot by tons of straight men. She's a rabbit looking Audrey Hepburn. I think it's probably based purely on her rack.

Jennifer Love Hewitt gets the "hot girl / glamour edit" but does not live up to it.

Every actress in Heathers had more presence and charisma.

by Anonymousreply 19April 28, 2020 1:56 AM

Lauren Ambrose was great in it.

by Anonymousreply 20April 28, 2020 1:58 AM

I love this movie. Could've done without Jenna Elfman's character though.

by Anonymousreply 21April 28, 2020 12:34 PM

I agree R21

by Anonymousreply 22April 28, 2020 8:29 PM

I wanted to 3-way Ethan and Seth.

Still do.

by Anonymousreply 23April 28, 2020 8:30 PM

It's nothing special, but I've always liked it. It is kind of a yearbook of 1998 Young Hollywood. Sadly, Embry isn't fond of it.

The "Remember That?" Guy is my neighbor. He's a yogi now.

Greetings, Mr. Magoo

by Anonymousreply 25April 28, 2020 8:41 PM

It's heavy handed with a lot of miscast leads. Charlie Korsmo quit acting after this movie understandably. The Jenna Elman scene is tacked on out of nowhere.

by Anonymousreply 26April 28, 2020 8:44 PM

I always like this movie as a kid. I just like R2 was 10 in 1998. I would watch this whenever it came on HBO, which seemed like it aired constantly. R24 is right, it's nothing special, but it is a fun little movie to watch.

I'd only watch it today for nostalgic reasons. Not because it's some cinematic masterpiece (which it's not) when I became a teenager, I discovered TCM and never looked back, LOL.

by Anonymousreply 27April 28, 2020 8:59 PM

American Pie 1&2 even used the same party house used in Can't Hardly Wait to show them how it should have been done on their own turf.

by Anonymousreply 28April 28, 2020 10:58 PM

[Quote] Sadly, Embry isn't fond of it.

What did he say??

by Anonymousreply 29April 29, 2020 2:28 PM

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s “Party of Five” co-star Lacey Chabert played Hewitt’s character in Not Another Teen Movie, a superior film.
