The revelation that happy, dancing, Ellen Degeneres is actually a bitter, mean spirited, thunder cunt, proves that some celebrities that try and pass themselves off as kind and sweet really aren't, who are some other celebrities you think might not be as kind as they try to appear?

[quote] St. Angie of course
Back in 1981 Lansbury was on tour with George Hearn in SWEENEY TODD and I was working as a shopbottom in a department store in San Francisco. I came back to work after a day off and my co-worker told me I'd missed seeing her, as she'd been in the day before and bought a Members Only jacket (!?!). I thought she was just kidding until she showed me the sales slip. Needless to say, I was disappointed that I'd missed meeting the Great Angela Lansbury.
Not five minutes after the store opened, in walks Miss Lansbury. I marched right up to her and told her how much I'd enjoyed seeing SWEENEY TODD. She never even acknowledged my comment, instead saying that her husband thought the jacket she'd bought was too big for her and could she please try on a smaller size? Fine, she was all business and I could be that way too.
As I was finding some colors for her I turned around to see one of the ladies from the cosmetics department coming towards us with a piece of paper and a pen. I tried to catch her eye to warn her off, but she of course was fixated on Miss Lansbury. Before she could even ask, Lansbury turned to her and snarled "I'm on my OWN time, and when I am on my OWN time, I do NOT like to be bothered!". In fairness, she did not raise her voice, but her tone was wilting.
I thought it best not to comment, so I focused on finding her a jacket she liked and we completed the exchange. I didn't even ask her to sign the sales slip as it wasn't required by the store's policy and I thought she might think I was doing it just to get her autograph, which would've been true. I wished her a pleasant day and off she went.
I understand that it must be tiresome to constantly be bothered for your autograph (this was before MURDER SHE WROTE so she wasn't yet a household name). but I couldn't help but think it would've taken her 2 seconds to scribble an autograph to make a fan happy, but instead she took the opportunity to be a pill about it.
Later I thought that she might've been put off because the local critic had just panned the show and they had been reduced to offering 2-for-1 tickets just to get bodies into the 2300-seat Golden Gate Theater. Maybe she just hated San Francisco at that point.

The problem that celebrities have is that EVERYONE wants to have "a moment" with them. Good or bad, some people just want a reaction. I have known a few minor celebs and it's always awkward when they are continuously approached in public by strangers. You never know exactly what they want and it can even be a little frightening. You won't hear anyone say a bad word about Henry Winkler. Everyone adores that man. All my friends who have encountered him in the business rave about him like he's their favorite uncle or something. Seems like a real stand up guy.
I think celebrities can have off days just like everyone, so I don't put a lot of thought into most of these stories unless it's someone like Faye Dunaway who seems to find trouble anywhere she goes. Where there's that much smoke, there's gotta be a fire somewhere.
I have a friend who gets angry if he meets a celebrity and they don't stop what they're doing and let him tell them his entire life story and take an hour long coffee break with him. I'm always like "they just met you. Would you want to spend more than a few moments exchanging pleasantries with a complete fucking stranger that just came up to you?"
A few can just be considered as a bit cold, shy, or aloof which isn't a crime. Most celebrities I've met are perfectly pleasant, but they're usually there to do a job. It's like if you're at work and Karen in the cubicle next to yours kept popping in to ask you stupid questions. Would you want that? Just remember where you are, the situation you're both in, and don't be an idiot.

I was waiting tables at Bradfords Coach House restaurant in St Pete Fl in 1983 while they were filming "Cocoon" (but I didnt know that at the time) and in came Steve Guttenberg,Wilfred Brimley,Hume Cronyn and Don Ameche. Plus a few others . I recognized Guttenberg ,but had no clue who the rest were at the time. Hume was exactly as he appeared in movies, curt and dismissive and very unfriendly . Steve was one of "those" guys who thought he was hilarious and never shut up (but god he was so hot!) . Wilfred was nice and surprisingly sexy ( I know, but I swear he was!) but Don Ameche , now there was a true gentleman . Exquisite manners , and was perfectly lovely to a gaggle of old women who had recognized him . They tipped well and werent bad customers , but I hated Hume Cronyn after that because he was such a sour person. The only time he spoke to me was to give his food order. They never discussed making a movie ,mostly they talked about fishing .

I suspected Lidia Bastianich was not a very nice person, just from watching her cooking shows. She can't hide it, seems like a bully. I Googled that issue of her having a slave. Here is the Wikipedia synopsis (footnotes removed):
[quote] In 2011, Bastianich was accused of keeping an indentured servant. The subsequent lawsuit was tossed out in 2012 by a lower court that held that the plaintiff was not a slave because she received health insurance, room and board and other perks in lieu of getting paid. The claimant later recanted the principal accusations of the lawsuit.

An old DL thread recounted George and his buddies taking a limo to go and egg the house of someone who gave one of his films a bad review, he would have been in his 40s at the time. I think it's unfair to frat boys to say George has a frat boy mentality, he sounds infantile. Have also read of the mean spirited pranks.

R43, I can confirm that Amy Adams is a pretty cool person. I met her at a Prince concert at the Forum in 2012-ish (when he played 21 dates there). My ex noticed her, walked up to her, and just started chatting like they were old friends. Adams was even cool with taking a photo of her two new pals. Her boyfriend, now her husband (I think) took the photo with my ex’s phone.

PS - one of the reasons IMDB shut down their message boards was because people posted stuff about Clooney and his peccadilloes...and the frauds who drank his koolaid would report the posters and entire threads would be deleted. I used to correspond with one of the posters via email. She was from Germany and was totally into Clooney, despite this. She believes that he did those things, but Europeans think differently about sex than we do.

For me, it was the opposite. Clooney getting married to Amal put him squarely on the gaydar. It crystalized for me at the Prince Harry royal wedding. Clooney and Amal looked like each other's trophies.

I have a Tom Hanks story that set my impression of him forever. This would have been right around Money Pit and before Big really sent him in the late eighties, but he was already a highly recognizable star.
I used to wait for my bus home from high school in downtown LA across from the Dorothy Chandler and in front of the entrance to a courthouse, I’m not sure which division. As I was waiting with my friends one day, he came slamming out of the entrance with two or three people who I assumed were his lawyers, and he was absolutely hysterical and furious, ranting and raving and screaming. Flecks of spittle flying from his mouth as he jut his fingers into one of the men’s chest. One of the lawyers (again I assume) was a woman, and he let her have it as well. He did this all while scuttling down the sidewalk toward the parking lot across the street, furiously flinging his arms around, totally unaware of the spectacle he was making, or not caring. People were stopping and watching slack jawed, including me and my friends. It almost could have been a scene from a movie, it was so over the top. This went on for what seemed like forever, but was probably about two minutes or so. He would stop and jut his fingers at the guy and scream about something and then stop and whirl around and do it again.
Ever since then, I’ve thought his persona and career is 100% artificial, and I’ve heard lots of LA stories about how he’s a mean and angry drunk who has abused his wife for years. Of course she’ll never leave him, he’s Tom fucking Hanks.
That early exposure to the star bullshit made me never believe the PR, and I know some of the most powerful PR people in the business.
They’re ALL pretty much total assholes.

Since appearing "nice" is common for imaging/PR purposes, I'm not surprised that many celebs aren't as nice as they seem. So run of the mill "she's not as nice as she seems" isn't even noteworthy. It's the ones that have a massive difference between public image and private behavior that really interest me - in private they're not just "not as nice as them seem" but are truly awful, evil, and/or difficult people.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | April 27, 2020 1:29 PM |
I seem to recall stories about Hanks being an absolute monster back when I was a kid, when he first started getting really famous. I'd never find it again if I tried, but sometime around The Money Pit there were articles about how much of an asshole he was on set.
Then he got Henry Winkler fired from Turner & Hooch, which was particularly awful because Winkler helped him start his career, one of his early roles was on "Happy Days" and he was recommended BY Winkler who had liked him on "Bosom Buddies" and wanted to get him work once the series was canceled.
His bad reputation and Bonfire of the Vanities lead to people saying his career was over, then a couple years later he got Sleepless in Seattle and suddenly he was a beloved American icon. I remember being surprised and cynical about the whole thing.

For the last decade or so, I've gotten similar vibes from him and Clooney ... creepy, sinister. Something deeply unsettling lurking beneath an overpolished surface. At the very least I think DiCaprio has severe anger issues (maybe being in the closet for 25 years will do that to you?).
Then there are some celebrities like Pierce Brosnan or The Rock who just seem too good to be true to me.

In a way I would say that Taylor Swift is worse than Timberlake. Swift has makes it seem like most of her former boyfriends are assholes. She made Joe Jonas out to be an asshole, but Jonas has been said to be very nice and that he's on good terms with other ex girlfriends like Camilla Belle.

Whitney Houston before she was caught with marijuana at the Hawaii airport in 1999/2000. That really changed her reputation, killed her career and validated many of the rumors about her and Bobby. Up until that point, many still bought the idea of her being a "sweetheart".

When the show discussed her marriage to Allen Ludden, she really came off as a cold bitch when it came to her stepchildren. If they were late for a meal she’d put the food away...she just sounded like she had no time for kids. So why marry a man with three kids? I do like her work, but still.
I wonder if the stepkids are waiting for Betty to die so they can release a stepmonster book about her.

From what I understand, Britney never really cheated on Timberlake with Wade, Wade kissed her and Timberlake thought she was cheating on him or something. I wouldn't be surprised if that was it. Britney strikes me as too nice and/or dim to cheat.

Fun thread to read.
It confirms two things- 1. My instincts to NEVER acknowledge a celebrity's physical presence, unless, I'm first acknowledged by them is right-on. No, that isn't because I'm "below" them and I think they're too good for me. To the contrary, It's because I place too much value on myself to potentially put myself in a position where my interaction isn't welcome.
2. What r94 and r194 wrote reminds me of what a guy told me who used to live in LA and for decades and worked on film sets.
He said about fame that after seeing it up close, he wouldn't want to be famous. The cost, the expense for security, and you can't go anywhere. By the you can't go anywhere he meant just to go to the store. He said, "We go to the store and nobody cares or bothers us. When you have a certain level of fame ,the things you and I do and not even think about it, they can't do."
He also said Angelina Jolie is a gorgeous woman and very nice to everybody behind the scenes on the film crews.

Whitney was always straight up hood, it's amazing how many years her "princess" image held up. That wasn't who she was at all, but what she was really like was able to be kept from the public for an incredibly long time.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | April 27, 2020 6:11 PM |
Yeah—Whitney was ghetto long before Bobby. He was just her excuse to escape the curated image created by Arista. I have to admit I love her first two albums the most. They hold up well.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | April 27, 2020 6:14 PM |
After her first two albums, Whitney became a lot more direct and confrontational in interviews, sometimes understandably so. She REALLY hated interviewers asking her about Mariah and the (in my opinion, completely exaggerated) similarities between them. It's funny because even during THAT time, she still was considered a sweetheart.

Every experience I've had working (as a server) near or around Streep has been a delight. Like Mike Nichols she likes to charm the help so that they spread the word about how gosh darn wonderful she is. It's a great approach as it works wonderfully, and regardless of your reasons it's always the best idea in the world to be sweet and appreciative to the help.
I once served Streep her dessert first out of a group of about a dozen dinner guests (apple tarte tatin), and she grandly held my hand, kissed me on the cheek and told me she loved me. She's very actressy like that, but come on! She's Meryl Streep and it was fun! Nichols was equally seductive and seemed to need to win you over by being amusing and personable. A total act to be sure, but a nice one compared to most jerks.

I think so. It seemed like Swift tried to make Perry out to be bad guy, but was really her. When Swift started off doing country in Nashville, there were stories about she and her father had backstabbed songwriters and producers around town and that songwriters weren't credited on some of her songs. Swift's father is a wealthy stockbroker and they had the cash to spend on Swift's dream.

Emily Deschanel would not belong on a list like this R66 because her default nature is genuinely nice.
However, she was very influenced by the rude, entitled behavior of David Boreanaz, and would mirror his eye contact avoidance and phony cellphone preoccupation while they were both on set.
John Francis Daly morphed into a Boreanaz douchebag mini-me while on the show, which is disappointing if you liked him on Freaks and Geeks. Everyone on set was specifically told not to mention that show, much like no one was allowed to reference Buffy or Angel around DB.

I met Betty White when she stayed at a hotel where I worked. This was back in the 70s. I spoke to her as she was boarding the elevator with some of her dogs. We chatted about animals and she was very sweet and bubbly. I think that celebrities are like everyone else. They have good days and bad days and sometimes feel amiable and other times are hostile for a whole host of reasons unfathomable to others. Unless it's a particularly heinous encounter, I don't think you can really judge a person from a single meeting.

Back in the 70's my dad went into an old chain steak place for lunch. One of those steak places where you went down a line and got your steak of choice cooked to order. Basically a cafeteria. He was standing in line and struck up a conversation with the guy in front of him and realized it was Clint Eastwood. He said he was really cool and down to earth and seemed very interested in my dad and asked lots of questions about his job and stuff. This was in Houston and my father was a journalist working for a newspaper at the time.

it always cracks me up in threads like these when some posters try to excuse the bad behavior of those "poor hounded celebs"
that's absurd
These people CHOSE to seek fame. You can guarantee the first few times they got recognized by a "nobody commoner" they were thrilled. Sure it probably gets old if your career lasts long enough but that's part of the fame game. Some celebs seem to think that being famous should only be about the perks but not the negatives.
Now I wouldn't blame them for dismissing a rude or crazy fan but there's no excuse to reject a polite and friendly fan who just wants a photo or a quick chat. There's no excuse to be rude to staff or servicepeople just doing their jobs
If they can't handle it then get out of the business
and no I'm not someone who seeks out celebs. I've interacted with a few over the years and they were nice.

obviously people have good days and bad days, and celebrities are just ordinary people often thrown into extraordinary circumstances often being objectified, treated unfairly and even abused.....I work for a not for profit arts organization and have posted celebrity stories here before as I meet a good number of them. I have to say, the overwhelming majority of them are pleasant and professional, some are more friendly than others, but if there is a rule of thumb, it's the less famous they are, the more likely they are to be absolute dicks (with a few exceptions). I will say however that a very dear friend of mine, who is a very successful writer in LA, and one of her closest friends for many years is George Clooney. I talked on the phone with him once when she was visiting us for a weekend and he seemed very warm, although I've never met him and I don't know him, but I will tell you I know this woman would never be friends with an asshole - it's just not her at all. Alan Alda (mentioned way in the beginning) from what I’ve read and seem to gather is the type who was difficult and a bit full of himself during his MASH days, but mellowed and became a nice guy as he got older. It would be interesting to learn which celebrities were assholes only around the height of their fame (but then got over themselves) and which ones stayed assholes. Because those are the truly delusional ones.
I also wonder how many celebrity couples (I’m thinking Kevin & Kira and some others) have less of an attitude when they are not with their significant other. I realize it could be just the reverse but just human nature I would think two celebrities together would be more toxic than one.
Speaking of Alan Alda I think (and hope) Phil Donahue actually is as good a guy as he seems.

[quote] Any "America's Sweetheart" type
I'm embarrassed to admit it, but during a fallow period in my career I took a job as an assistant manager at a Blockbuster Video (not even the manager, the assistant manager). This was in the 1980s when BB was hot shit.
Anyway, everybody who was anybody was making VHS tapes and promoting the hell out of them by doing in-store appearances. Two stars who came to 'my' store were Debbie Reynolds and Shari Lewis. Baby Boomer heaven.
Debbie was a delight, as was her husband at the time, Richard Hamlett. He seemed like such a nice guy, I was shocked to hear he physically abused her. Debbie was a love. Upon arrival, she shook hands with everybody ('Hello, my name is Debbie', like we didn't know who she was), posed for pictures, and chatted for hours with all the middle-aged housewives who had gotten all dressed up and had their hair done just to meet her.
Being a good little gay boy, I had ordered copies of not only the exercise video she was promoting, but as many of her old movies as I could get my hands on (the manager was a dumb straight guy who wouldn't have known Debbie Reynolds from Debbie Harry. She sold tons of videos and signed everything. A lovely afternoon.
Shari Lewis, on the other hand, was curt, condescending, and generally unpleasant. To the kids, she was all sweetness and light, but to the adults, she was anything but. Nothing was to her liking. After awhile, during the signing, I noticed her repeatedly clearing her throat so I came up alongside her and asked if she would care for some water. She turned to me and said in a mocking tone 'No, I would NOT care for some water.' Fine, Miss Phyllis Naomi Hurwitz from the Bronx, you can choke to death for all I care. I dunno, maybe having to earn your living with your hand shoved up a lamb's ass does things to one's ego. As soon as she left I cleared off the main display, took her videos off the in-store monitors, and threw all the tapes on a bottom shelf in the stockroom. That'll show her.
Years later, I read Lewis had suffered from breast cancer a few years earlier so maybe she was not in good health. But she was still a raving bitch.

There was a thread somewhere on DL years ago where someone said the actress Amber Benson was fed up by the end of her Buffy run that she and Hannigan weren't in the same room during the last scenes of her character. They used stand ins for certain parts and then edited in Hannigan or Benson.
I also recall that at one point Hannigan said that Julie Benz who played Darla was awful and nasty to her. The gossip or stories about Benz and Hannigan reminds me a bit of how Jennie Garth bitched up and down about Shannen Doherty being difficult to work with on BH 90210. But, after Doherty left the show Garth was supposedly a bitch to several actresses hired for parts on the show like Tiffani Thiessen, Emma Caulfield, Kathleen Robertson, and Vanessa Marcil. I think it was Marcil who confirmed Garth being a bitch.

R325, it was Tiffany Amber Thiesen who said that Jennie Garth and actually all the women on the show were bitches to her. They actually became close friends AFTER the show and she even (if I remember correctly from Howard Stern) videotaped Garth giving birth. But then, for some reason that Thiesen didn't go into, Garth did something that really offended Thiesen. Thiesen said the way it happened, Garth acted like Thiesen did something to her but it was actually Garth's fault. I think Garth pulled a "do you know how I am" like 4 years ago so she is probably the bitch Thiesen paints her as. And I thought Julie Benz was nice to everyone? Maybe I'm wrong about that though.

Someone posted a comment here a while back about Richard Simmons. The guy was working at one of his gyms and at the grand opening Richard showed up for the cameras and was all sweetness and light and when the camera people and reporters left he locked the doors and started yelling and swearing at everyone complaining that the gym looked like dump, there weren't enough towels, they weren't cheerful enough on camera, and they weren't dressed trendy enough.

[quote]Jennifer Aniston certainly doesn't seem like an asshole to me. Nor do Lisa Kudrow or Matt LeBlanc. Schwimmer and Cox are the two I'd peg most likely to be assholes. Perry seems pretty well liked since he still works and, with all his drug issues, we know that most people wouldn't want to work with him unless he was actually a somewhat decent human being.
The story was that the six stars of Friends supposedly all got along well, but Cox was bitch with guest stars and Aniston would join in with Cox's bitchy antics.

R273/R325 in the Buffy reunion shoot for Entertainment Weekly a few years back, you could tell Hannigan was not fondly remembered by her cast mates even with all the years that have passed. It looked like most of the others kept distance from her where they could, and where they couldn’t maintained a chilly professionalism with her.
I loved how Amber & Seth were in one of her shots and spent the whole time flirting and making jokes with each other while she sat there awkwardly in-between not looking at or interacting with either of them. That’s what you get for being a bully and a hag, toots.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Tony Danza yet.
Apparently he's an aggressive, hostile, closet case.
There's a DLer who worked as an outcall massage therapist and Dance tried hitting on him and then turned on him. I forget the details. Search the Tony Dan's threads.
And Tony's bad temper is well documented. In the 80s he was charged in court for punching a guy.

Back when Friends was still on, a Rolling Stone reporter spent the day on set with the cast. He had lunch with Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, and was the one who originally wrote about Jennifer eating the same salad for lunch every day since the show began, and that she was somewhat embarrassed at the OCD nature of it.
Before he interviewed Matthew Perry and Matthew LeBlanc, Courteney told him that one Matthew will be friendly and easy to talk to, and one won't.

There was some super unflattering unauthorized bio of Mel Brooks that came out last year that I so don’t want to believe is true...but who knows. He was always one of my top 5 “if you could have anyone over for dinner” guests and their marriage seemed like such the real deal.
I actually saw them at a restaurant when I was about 12 (pretty sure it was 1990). We were all trying to be cool about it but my grandmother insisted on going up to them — and she motioned to all of us sitting at our table, and we all waved, or something like that.
Kind of embarrassed but at the end of the day glad she did it.

A high school friend happened to blunder across a location shoot for one of Mel Brooks's movies, back in the day. She said that Brooks talked cheerfully to her and her mother and showed them around, and that he was just great to two total strangers who has been gawking.
Of course my friend was a pretty blonde aged 16, which might gave something to do with his friendliness, but maybe not. She probably just caught him when he was feeling friendly and generous.

Timberlake is a douche. He tried to get back together with Britney Spears to promote his video for Cry Me a River. Britney flat-out told Rolling Stone this in an interview. I believe her 100%.
[quote] Spears revealed after the split that Timberlake actually wanted to reunite with her ... possibly for press. She told Rolling Stone in 2003, "I think guys have egos, and when their egos get hurt and their pride's messed up, they deal in weird ways ... I think I was in shock, to be honest ... But you live and you learn. He called me up and asked me if it was OK. I can't believe I'm telling you this right now. But who cares. He called me up and wanted to supposedly get back together or whatever, but behind it was, 'And by the way, you're in a video that's coming out,'" she recalled. "That kind of got slipped in," she continued. "'Don't worry about it. It's not a big deal.' So the record label called and said, 'If you want to change this, you can.' I had the power to say no to the video. But I didn't, because I thought, 'Hey, it's your video.'"

R251, I've met Benedict Cumberbatch and I honestly found him to be charm personified. There is something about him that makes you realise he has "it". His mother is the same. It was him that approached me and had a little chat, he was actually the only really friendly actor at that function, though I don't hold it against anyone at all. It was clear from being close up with them that many appeared aloof due to shyness/anxiety. And it's not like I'm the type to approach people either, so...
It really makes me think, as a few other posters have pointed out, how utterly weird it must be to be approached constantly, and mostly in inappropriate ways. I have this friend and she and her sister are just so weird about it. We live in a city with quite a few local celebrities about, plus it tends to be the first port of call for international celebrities too, so we come across them fairly regularly, and my friends turn into these bizarre, giggling freaks. They start whispering incredibly loudly "that's [so-and-so]", so that the person hears them and then they giggle and preen, and then sort of scream at the person and say "I love you, I love you" on repeat instead of trying to have a basic conversation. Have I mentioned these women are hovering around the 40 years old mark? Everyone we've bumped into (or who has been dragged into this, rather) has been lovely, but it is interesting to note how their body language is. I'm generally standing awkwardly behind, having been edged out by the others, and the number of celebrities who notice and make a point of saying hello and sort of turn their bodies towards someone like me who is not fussing all over them has always made me aware of how awkward this behaviour must be for them.

I once had dinner with a baseball all-star to discuss his involvement in a charity function I volunteered with. He was SO charming. Within five minutes of sitting down, a fan interrupted our conversation and asked for his autograph. He smiled and signed. Then another person came, then another, then another. One told him he was pronouncing his last name wrong. One guy asked for the name of an insider in the baseball team's organization. It continued for an hour. He suggested we leave because his dinner got cold. He wasn't angry, just disappointed. He told me it happens all of the time. He can never eat out. I guess he's one of those who tolerates his own celebrity. Personally, I would have had enough after ten minutes of it. If he wasn't married, I would have invited him for coffee at my home. I feel like I can remember the exact moment being "nice" became part of an artist's brand, if you know what I mean, and that was c. 2009 with Lady Gaga, who started always bringing up "the fans" and how important they were to her etc. Then I remember people like Rihanna and Katy Perry jumping on the bandwagon in a way that seemed so overdone. From there it exploded to everyone, especially with the rise of Twitter and how easy it is to now be in touch with celebrities. I don't remember it being like that before. The people who did interact with their audience, like Tori Amos for example, were always genuine about it, and if other artists were more shy and retiring, that was them and it didn't matter. Now everyone is automatically saying that they're doing stuff "for the fans", like they're throwing a sop to a dog.
by Anonymous | reply 420 | April 29, 2020 8:37 AM |
I think the whole audience plant with some “random fan” they bring up on stage that can miraculously sing or dance really well is a pretty obvious gimmick now.
I like these kind of moments where the singer connects with their audience through the music in a real way—and there’s a moment where the artist realizes how much a particular song has resonated with fans during the performance. I’ve experienced this at concerts and the energy is really quite something.

[quote]William Shatner was hated by everybody on the Star Trek set, with the possible exception of Leonard Nimoy, who seemed to be able to tolerate him.
Toward the end of Nimoy's life he cut Shatner out completely, apparently because Shatner wanted him to be in a documentary about Star Trek captains and Nimoy said no, so Shatner secretly filmed him at a sci-fi convention and used the footage without permission. They even worked together on a project after that and Nimoy refused to speak to him at all, but also he didn't go blabbing to the press about the feud either. Shatner did, even writing a book about it after Nimoy died. Tacky as hell.
I have two acquaintances who have horses and compete in some of the same events Shatner does and they both separately said he was very odd. I accidentally got Shatner's attention myself when I wrote an article about his 80th birthday and he said some very strange things about me to an interviewer, as though he thought he knew me or had interviewed with me. The reporter he spoke to contacted me to confirm and when I said no, I hadn't interviewed Shatner, he said, "That doesn't surprise me, he was all over the place, his wife was the only thing keeping him somewhat coherent."
He recently divorced that wife seemingly out of nowhere. She went back to her family to deal with her brother's death and Shatner sent her divorce papers while she was planning the funeral.

It was completely manufactured. Gaga has to be the most bogusly transparent major star from the past 30 years or so. Everything she does reeks of desperation, including her "everything but the kitchen sink" approach to making music and music videos. My friend saw Gaga in concert around 2010 and said she was a huge bitch to the audience and couldn't have been bothered to be nice. Her appearance on The Simpsons was the icing on the cake. If all that was genuinely the way she is, it'd come through and I'd probably respect her more. It's like the opposite of Grace Jones, to use an artist Gaga has clearly been inspired by. Grace Jones is who she is, all the crazy, over the top stuff she does is enjoyable because she doesn't come across like she's putting on an act. Gaga seems very calculated. It probably explains why when she used to talk about her music and what she was trying to achieve with it, it never made sense either.

I've worked as an entertainment reporter on and off for a while in Hollywood. It's been loads of fun and I've met tons of stars including many favorites and have had my work published in many top publications (People, Variety, TV Guide).
I have horror stories and, looking back, I can see many times people were being nice to me because they wanted to come off well to my readers.
I don't think actors, generally speaking, there are exceptions of course, should be friends, parents, or ever come near their fans. They simply don't know how to be nice to other people. If they're being ignored, they're furious; if they're being asked for an autograph, they act like they're being stalked.
Social media has been a game changer - actors don't need reporters anymore. They tell their fans what they want them to know. I don't see Hollywood bouncing back anytime soon with COVID-19. I hope to find something else when all this is over.

Then the showing started to take off and virtually overnight, they turned into fucking monsters! Except for LeBlanc (too sweet and dumb to ever go to the dark side) and Lisa Kudrow (who really is "Phoebe" and happy to be off in her own world). The other four became the clique of mean rich high school kids and terrified or dismissed (if you were lucky) everyone around them (particularly crew and writers). [quote]After her first two albums, Whitney became a lot more direct and confrontational in interviews, sometimes understandably so. She REALLY hated interviewers asking her about Mariah and the (in my opinion, completely exaggerated) similarities between them. It's funny because even during THAT time, she still was considered a sweetheart.
I genuinely believe Whitney was a sweetheart until the industry wore her down. Even Bobby Brown admitted that she didn't get into showbiz for the reasons he, and others, did but actually wanted to sing more than the trappings of stardom. It's true she got combative in interviews after she got too big to take down but she had to deal with a lot. However, what irritated her the most wasn't the Mariah Carey comparisons, but 1). the questioning her "blackness" which culminated with the infamous booing at the soul train awards driving her to pursue Bobby Brown that same night and 2). doubting of her marriage which she became very defensive about.
Then there was the usual bullshit women in show business had to go through had to put up with. Check out this video from 1986 of Paul Schafer being super creepy to her on TV. I think she held up well under the circumstances.

To be fair, Whitney Houston was never comfortable with the good girl image. From an 1995 Time Magazine article:
[quote]Interviewed recently on a beach near her getaway home in Miami, Houston, 32, projected the contradictions. As she arrived clad in a form-fitting purple dress, hand in hand with Brown--the two have reconciled after a recent separation--she seemed ready for a camera to swoop down for an adoring close-up. Yet she also flashed some feisty homegirl attitude. "People think I'm Miss Prissy Pooh-Pooh, but I'm not; I like to have fun," she says, jabbing a finger in the air. "I can get down, really freakin' dirty with you. I was born in Newark, New Jersey, with two brothers and a very strong father. It made me tough--perhaps too tough."
She was trying to tell everybody she could that she and Bobby were a perfect match.

Some people (including celebrities are cunts), others are genuinely nice people (including some celebrities) and most are somewhere in-between (including celebrities).
However, I wouldn't take one incident as proof of anything really . Having said that you do hear lots of nice stories. I remember one about Ellen Burstyn from the late 1970s/early 1980s. She was rushing through an airport and a fan tried to stop her for an autograph and Ellen brushed her off. As Ellen kept walking about five steps later she stopped, went back to the fan, apologised and signed an autograph. I think that story (it may not even be true) illustrates that celebrities all have their bad days or a moment when its not a good time to sort of ambush them.
The only story I have is I was in a book store decades ago looking through some books and I noticed a man who looked familiar. Naturally I sort of started to stare, he smiled and then I realised it was Hugo Weaving. I went back to browsing through the books, a little embarrassed because I don't approach famous people but it was one of the instances where I didn't recognise the person and started thinking do I know them personally before realising that I do but I really don't.
I friend told me a similar story with someone else (who wouldn't be known to DataLounge) who rather than reacted graciously snapped back 'Take a fucking picture - it will last longer' it was only after that comment did he realise who he was staring at put couldn't place. I imagine famous people get stares all the time and often its because people can't place who they are and think its someone they know personally.

He also got naive Frances Gall to do this song and video she thought was about lollipops. Later he put in footage of models sucking on big phallic lollipops, which was clearly sexual in nature.
“Les Sucettes (Lollipops) was recorded in 1966–the story of a girl who is “in paradise” every time “that little stick is on her tongue”. Upon discovering the dual meaning of the risqué lyrics, Gall refused to perform the song and never worked with, nor spoke to Gainsbourg again.”
by Anonymous | reply 490 | May 3, 2020 11:44 AM |
I agree about celebs--a lot of fans are pushy af and have this huge sense of entitlement when they encounter a fan in public who is just trying to have some sort of a personal life. These are usually people that then go back online and talk shit, so it puts celebs in a difficult position when a fan is clearly just an asshole--or trying to provoke them into some kind of negative interaction for publicity, negative attention, etc. Sometimes people just get so excited that they behave badly. That's why many fans avoid being in public and have assistants do mundane tasks they might otherwise do themselves.
Sometimes they get access to stores before they are open. I worked in a store in college in the 90s and Lou Gossett Jr was in the store before we opened, buying CDs for the crew. He was filming Diggstown, if I remember correctly. Super nice and I was friendly and chatted with him like a regular customer.

I think that Chip and Joanna Gaines are nice for the camera, business and when they are within their "belief" box. In all their shows, they never have had a gay couple, a minority that was not associated with Baylor or was lower middle class. Sure, they had the poor veteran and his wife, but that fits the religious right box. Their businesses, including the restaurant are closed on Sunday. I respect their right to be closed on Sunday, but their reasoning is all around religion, not because they are doing it for employees. I suspect that when pressed on some progressive social issues, they become defensive and quote the bible but say they love everyone. There is some underlying issue here.
Compare that to Ben and Erin of Hometown. They help rich and poor, black and white and there have been a couple of people that are likely members of the LBGTQ community. I watched their interview conducted at Liberty University. While Ben is a PK and both professed their faith in JC, they clearly did not bite at the underlying comments from the interviewer. They came off as a couple that have faith, but do not let it box them in caring for or interacting with all within society. Nice people.

I always thought Schaffer was gay. He co-wrote It’s Raining Men for chrissake
by Anonymous | reply 512 | May 4, 2020 4:15 AM |
It's Raining Men was originally offered to Donna Summer but she turned it down because that was the period where she was going through her Jesus phase.

r509 Born and raised in France, only spoke French and a French cultural icon. Sounds like a Frenchman to me.
by Anonymous | reply 514 | May 4, 2020 6:18 AM |
Gainsbourg was Russian Jewish.
by Anonymous | reply 515 | May 4, 2020 6:31 AM |
R513 damn imagine how big a gay icon she would have been had she taken that song.
I love it just the way it is, though.
Also, speaking of Paul Schaffer, I read (I think in her autobiography) that he dated Valerie Bertinelli. That’s just weird.

r514 By your standard I guess that makes everyone born in America a Native American.
by Anonymous | reply 519 | May 4, 2020 4:08 PM |
Oh for fuck's sake, R519! Nobody in the English-speaking world gives a rat's ass if a Frenchman who speaks French and lives in France and who is a celebrity in the Francophonic world is ethnically French!
From here he's French for all practical purposes, so shut your trap.
by Anonymous | reply 520 | May 4, 2020 4:59 PM |
r520 When people call him an "old French lech" and say that "like a lot of Frenchmen of the same disposition, you just know he smelled. Reeked, even", it has to be acknowledged that he is not ethnically French. Sorry that upsets you so.

Calling Serge Gainsbourg a sleazy cliche Frenchman is somehow less offensive than calling him a sleazy cliche Jew.

Harsh winter forces a bit of emotional structure. I'm assuming you think the cold affects your mood. You don't escape winter mood by living in year round sunny climate. It's normal for humans to chase pleasure but it's not always functional. You enjoy spring and summer because of winter suffering. Sunny climates are bad for your skin.

I know this falls under politics. But what do you make of Matt Damon viciously going after Obama all the time when he was president but keeping his yap shut about Trump saying he should be given a chance? Same with Nicole Kidman. Red flag!
by Anonymous | reply 532 | May 5, 2020 10:31 AM |
Matt Damon has said a few strange things in his time. I try to read things and imagine context but it made no sense to me. When he mentioned people shouldn't speak about their sexuality or something to that effect because it adds to the mystery. Yet he can refer to his wife and kids as much as he wants.
by Anonymous | reply 533 | May 5, 2020 11:20 AM |
^^ Sorry, people = actors.
From the Guardian: The actor, who Elizabeth Day dubbed “Hollywood’s ultimate everyman”, has sparked another controversy following remarks in the interview that actors should steer clear from disclosing their sexuality “because that’s the one of the mysteries” actors “should be able to play”.

South Park creators pretty much nailed Matt Damon in Team America.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | May 5, 2020 2:21 PM |
Matt Damon is gay and what he says is scripted to make sure he sounds straight.
by Anonymous | reply 536 | May 5, 2020 3:11 PM |
Well maybe he's bi. When you can sleep with most people you want to why not? Like Brando. I think he's was genuinely bi. Rita Moreno thinks he was a fabulous lover. You can't be a great lover to women if you don't feel any genuine connection. You can get it up if you're gay but you can't really get into it.

Matt Damon also had that moment where he whitesplained diversity to a black woman on a reality show.

The late Charles Pierce told this story. He guested on Wonder Woman and was the subject of very bad anti-gay harassment. Carter heard about it, called a meeting on the set and said "No one on this set will be belittled. We are all professionals. Let's act like it". Case closed. No more harassment.

Was this before or after the election? If it was after that's fair enough. We all hoped against hope he would rise to the occasion and have a staff that would help him. Of course it turned out far far more catastrophic than most of us could have imagined.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | May 6, 2020 4:36 PM |
Oprah and Matt Damon have lost touch. But I guess it happens when you “make it”. Who’s to say that they wouldn’t do the same thing given the same success in life that they have?

I'm University educated and worship Trump. He's perfection. I realize you hate him but I have no idea why. I don't see how Trump could be more liberal. Michael Jackson had the power to do whatever he wanted . I hope that's not the kind of power you r after.

R464 here; I mostly blame myself for thinking people would be nice.
Even if someone was being nice, he/she had an agenda.
Mine was to write a good story, get a scoop and see if any of these folks were able to be human beings.
They were not. Are not. I've learned the hard way to keep my distance.

Christine Baranski. I believe it was here on DL that I first read of her disdain for her fans but it's been mentioned on other forums as well. It was disappointing to hear as she seemed so down to earth on Colbert and such but then again she is an actress.

This is about Debra Messing. allegedly, About a year ago, Megan Mullally was on ET, or Extra, or one of those entertainment promo shows, walking casually around the W&G set, chatting with a reporter. Suddenly from off camera and another part of the set comes this high decibel, blood curdling scream that was way too loud to overlook. The reporter's reaction was of the "What . . . was that??" vein, to which Megan replied "Oh, don't let that get to ya. It's just another day on the Will & Grace set!".

I remember a long time ago reading that Roz Russell was holding a party for her fans. The kind of sorry desperate individuals who hang out constantly at stage doors and live their lives brushing up against their idols. She called them the 'dogs.' In other words she held a party for her celebrity friends and then another one for the dogs.
Streisand would complain about how ugly the people were who would hang out at the Winter Garden stage door. I guess the attractive people were living life. Not that anyone ever thought of Babs as a nice person.

Debra Messing was selected for People’s 50 Most Beautiful back when WILL AND GRACE was white hot. She sounded insufferable in the interview...like she was hot shit and her Eastern European cheekbones were what made her hot and how she became “a la Debra “. Or something like that. Can’t remember the exact same words but it sounded cringey 😬.

perhaps in this Lea Michelle era, actors will turn on the charm and be nicer to little people and bigger people; I don't give a shit if they mean it or not but just be professional.
I think we're going to see more of this stuff where day players and extras just start tweeting out So and So was a CUNT to me when I was a guest star or an extra and depending on which way the wind blows, it's not going to go well for them.
