Can we discuss Robert Preston in Victor Victoria?
Growing up in Ohio watching that film was the first time I'd ever seen a gay character on film like that. He was hysterically funny yet sad but his character seemed real to me and multi dimensional. Not just some gay caricature thrown into a movie.
For a 16 yr old the whole film was the gayest thing I'd ever seen on film and I loved it.
I also thought Preston was gay---not many straight actors in 1986 would have taken on a gay character on film!

Hey - I watched this last night!
Everyone was great, of course.
Robert reminded me of my grandma.

I wonder when he came out... or did he?

My mom insisted Robert Preston really must be gay, wife and children be damned.
She also referred to Billy Crystal as "that little fruit from Soap." If you played gay, you had to be gay in her little world.
As for Victor/Victoria, I love that movie and always will.

Robert Preston is the best thing about that movie, outside of Julie Andrews. And Leslie Ann Warren. And the crabby waiter. And..
Oh hell, every part of this movie is fucking perfect and fabulous. I never tire of it.

He and Warren were the best parts of the movie.

I really thought Preston was gay when I saw this first a teenager. Hilarious performance that never gets old. He was robbed of that Oscar.

James Garner was first approached to play the role of Toddy but ultimately it was concluded that he wouldn't be believable in the part so he was given the other male lead, the romantic role.

I always assumed he was gay, too. But he was reportedly a notorious womanizer, sleeping with nearly every woman in the casts of the shows he was in.
God bless Blake Edwards for giving him a career resurgence.

I thought he was known as a pussy hound in his earlier studio contract player days. Going through starlets like Hitler through Poland.

He'd played gay in "S.O.B." the year before, too. He's really convincing, especially in an era where Paul Lynde, Stephen Stucker and Charles Nelson Reilly were the big-name gays and incredibly over the top. I thought he was gay for years, it really (and hilariously) messed up my reading of the movie "Dark at the Top of the Stairs" which I saw for a college class in the 1990s.

Alex Karras was hot! And him revealing that he's gay in the movie made my young dick twitch.

The reveal of Alex Karras in bed with Robert Preston is still one of the biggest laughs I’ve ever had in a movie theatre.
