Clearly r17 has never read Dune. Paul begins on a pretty standard “hero’s journey” learning curve. He is 16 in the first book. Exactly how much authority is a kid in his late teens suppose to have?

To me the film still has allusions to Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, one of the most iconic Romantic era paintings.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 14, 2020 1:13 AM |
I’m reading the novel for the first time—I missed it when I was 16, which may have been the optimal age for its writing level (though I’m enjoying it as an escape—like Ivanhoe, a romance more than a novel). I heard an interesting podcast about its Islamic elements, which got me to pick it up. I’m only 125 pages in, but, so far, I can Timothee in the role—but then I don’t have what seems like the truly pathological hatred for him some of you have. I can see finding him “meh” (I don’t — I’ve liked him in the few things I’ve seen him in), but I don’t get the degree of bloodlust some of you have.

R32 Ironically I did read it at 16, and I remember being so excited in college when it was announced that the movie was being made, I could not wait to see what that world was going to look like. There were some striking visuals and I was in love with Sting, so it was worth seeing, although ultimately it was disappointing. And I never read beyond the first book.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 14, 2020 1:43 AM |
He is pretty and charismatic, but it does seem unfair and tiresome that he gets so many of the big leading roles (as eagerly recited by R26). There surely must be other perhaps even more talented actors out there in his age group. It's nice to see a fresh face, just as he was once. The constant cheerleading by his fans is also off-putting. And no, R11 , he will not be around forever. He'll be around as long as he's pretty and keeps his fanbase, two very interrelated factors. This is clearly a popularity contest and right now he's winning, but stars fade, more often than not.

I think the bottom line is overexposure more often than not hurts a career. Most actors don’t have sustained popularity. In Hollywood, the world is your oyster one minute and the next you’re yesterday’s news.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 14, 2020 2:41 AM |
Timothée is the only actor in his age group who can do this part. He’s the only proven leading man. You have people like Ansel Elgort who is a fug and bad actor without any trace of charisma. Then you have Lucas Hedges who can’t command the screen even when he’s the lead. Who is also a fug. There are some people a few years younger who also get cast in absolutely everything like those Stranger Things kids but many of them can’t act or will remain like most child actors, strange dwarfs as they mature and get less cute.
Timmy is in a class of his own if you want dramatic actor with range, looks, charm.
Tom Holland is the only alternative and he’s even more overused and isn’t really a proven draw outside of Spider-Man.

Bearing in mind that we live in a world where the unwashed hordes are desperately crying out that Boyega is the new Washington and Pratt is the new Ford, there's no better shorthand for the decay of Hollywood leading men in the past 20 years than Bale versus Chalamet as Laurie.

I have no idea why they thought people wanted a Dune reboot. This is a film that generally doesn’t do well with the public. This really should’ve been a tv series. The Vanity Fair photos release today and yesterday prove that they’re gonna hype the shit out of this.

I was not around on twitter or anywhere else close to movies back then but i watched a few movies with him in 2016 ( one with Emma watson and one with Lily Collins) and noticed him. Also i rememebr that he had a serious movie with Brad Pitt (about war) But i did not witness his crazy popularity phase. Did he had one? was it as big as Timothee's? WHat was the talk? Why he disappeared? I tried to watch the TV series with him that just came out and honestly - hated it and he seemed bland in it
Oh yeah i watch his movie about Musketeers - loved him there. He was cute. So what is the scope on him? I can see he is still well liked by the same crowd that likes Timothee

Wow, you manage to squeeze Berner bashing into a thread about Timothee Chalamet. I'm impressed. Usually fans of actors or even politicians don't do their guy harm no matter how incessant. Think Bieber, or 1D. Or Adam Lambert's fraus. Then there's Obama and JFK. If Tim didn't have rabid fans he'd be doing worse, not better. The business and the media always pay attention to rabid fan bases.

Well, Bernie's fans are the exception, because virtually any outlet that's covered the primaries has carried pieces discussing how a sizable percentage of voters find his vocal supporters off-putting as fuck even if they liked some his policies. I've seen the same thing about Chalamet's fans, on various sites: people acknowledge his talent but are repelled by his stans. Stans, by the way, that didn't make many of his post-Call Me By Your Name projects the successes they were hoped to be despite their rabidity.

The audience that blockbuster Hollywood chases after is 14 to 30 year old men and Timmy doesn't connect with that audience. He has a niche fan base, someone like George Mackay would have been a better choice. These movies aren't made for art, they are made to make money and this film won't and if it bombs hard enough who do you think will be the face of the bomb? Poor Timmy who will go the same way off Alden Ehrenreich and the many other actors that Hollywood were desperate to make "happen".

r80 i am puzzled too why some people are so triggered by Timothee. Like i can get that you may be neutral or do not like a person with no reason. But we can see that more often people are obsessively fixated on hating him. Not a normal level of participating - bulling on every platform. Like the level of mocking him on twitter became unnerving. It is as if they do not think he is a real person anymore, like when a kid cut off a dolls head cos it is not alive or smth. Absolute cruelty. I have never met this level of desire to destroy someone from public space ever. Maybe Biber, but i have grown up already and never paid attention to that part of showbiz but i remember the whole world was making fan at him. Like it was cool to shit on him at some point. And he was like 15 or 16 back then. I mean if i remember it living in a 3d world country and being an adult listening to rock and noticed it, then it must had been savage. I have found 4 groups who are extra in bringing Timothee down: women who find him too gay and girl-like (they mostly body-shame him for being too thin and ugly), some of the lgbtq+ people for various reasons (they mostly bodyshame him for being too thin and ugly too), straight dudes hate him for the same reason they hated RobPats and Biber and Rudolf Valentino in 20ties, teens (boys and girls) who caught the trend that hating on him on social will give them "i am not like other girls" points. Just hope it will not get to him and he will not hang himself or smth. Biber pretty much fucked up after all of it as we can see. No one can take it easily
Actually i am more surprised not even that he triggers others but that in western world with all your so-called wokeness and your religion (you are very religious to us ) you (and i mean adults with verified accounts on social media) so easily and passionately bullying other people and taking pleasure in it for just some hundreds of fucking likes. And the next day like nothing happens preaching about body-positive shit and acceptance of others when just yesterday you called Timothee thin skeleton with an ugly face and posted that screenshot from CMBYN of his ass and laughing at it for that clout. And not only him. He is just an easy noticeable target right now but you attack other celebs who ve done nothing just for the joy of it. And then you call yourself a 1st world society. I have to laugh

You mean there were actual polls asking people if they found Bernie's supporters "off-putting as fuck"? Because you claim "a sizable percentage of voters" thought so. How was this statistic arrived at?
Maybe you should watch something other than corporate sponsored mainstream media. It can't be proven Bernie's supporters are more off-putting than anyone else's supporters. It's a completely unprovable statement.
I mean here you are, apparently a supporter of someone else - being pretty off-putting about Bernie's supporters for no reason in a thread that's not even about this subject.

R83 It could be a backlash against the media's absolute adoration of him, his success, and his very vocal fanbase. It could be that some of his haters are secretly in love with him but resentful of his power over them. Otherwise, why take the time and go to such effort to express mean-spirited views? It is odd how much passion he evokes in people, but I think ultimately that benefits him. Better than being forgettable.

Assuming Villeneuve doesn't fuck this up, which he probably won't, this will be Chalamet's breakout role. Or it will be one of the most expensive disasters in Hollywood history.

R108 He's only overexposed to the people posting here, who are obsessed with him. The general public is still getting to know him. R89 That's fucking terrifying mate.

R92 yes, that’s some weird timing. Solidifying what I already suspected, he’s obsessed with the kid. He even has his friends communicating with Timmy’s fans. I’m afraid how crazy his brain is.
