She slept her way out the slums and into the mansion

A mansion in one of those marvelous Midwestern towns, that is......

by Anonymousreply 269April 24, 2020 11:04 AM

And then she ate it.

by Anonymousreply 1April 10, 2020 11:04 PM

She slept through an entire family of men!

Imagine that! How does one do that?

by Anonymousreply 2April 10, 2020 11:46 PM

I can't imagine, Brooke.

by Anonymousreply 3April 10, 2020 11:51 PM

On the otherwise very sweet YT chat with Kim Zinmer and her som she said she wants to do a production of Sweet Bird of Youth with him playing Princess whatsername and him as Chance Wayne. She needs to re-read that play.

[quote]She slept through an entire family of men! Imagine that! How does one do that?

Maybe she has some kind of mental disorder. Bi-polar maybe?

by Anonymousreply 5April 11, 2020 12:29 AM

Kim really should have had a better career in primetime. She made great guest appearances on DW and Seinfeld. She is very versatile, is the best crier ever and can do comedy with the best of them.

by Anonymousreply 6April 11, 2020 12:53 AM

She won't do anything but dinner theater unless she loses 30-40 pounds and gets a few tucks.

Sorry. I love her but she's too big for TV anything.

by Anonymousreply 8April 11, 2020 1:23 AM

R8 Fuck that I'd rather see her than Chrissy Metz.

by Anonymousreply 9April 11, 2020 1:26 AM

I'm talking when she left GL initially.

by Anonymousreply 10April 11, 2020 1:31 AM

I was always surprised that someone as youth-obsessed as ZImmer let herself go the way she did. The storylines with the younger guys kept coming and there she was neither young nor really what I would consider a desirable target for that age demographic that they continued to pair her with.

by Anonymousreply 11April 11, 2020 1:38 AM

She was looking bad when she went to OLTL, after GL ended. She is ten years younger than Erika Slezak and Robin Strasser, but they looked ten years younger than her.

by Anonymousreply 12April 11, 2020 1:42 AM

It was the extra weight that made her look so much older than Slestack and Strasser.

by Anonymousreply 13April 11, 2020 1:45 AM

R13 It wasn't just the weight, it was the lines on her face.

by Anonymousreply 14April 11, 2020 1:48 AM

I thought OP was talking about this whore.

by Anonymousreply 15April 11, 2020 1:51 AM

She has a ton of sun damage from tanning in order to hide acne scars from when she was young. She was mercilessly teased about this in her earlier years on the show, including by Robert Newman, which didn't help her self esteem.

by Anonymousreply 16April 11, 2020 2:08 AM

John Bolger went to my gym in the 80s. Joy of Movement on Lafayette St. What a body he had and at that time men walked around nude in the locker room . And he was nice. I miss those days. Now, younger men are so inhibited about being naked in front of other men. So stupid.

by Anonymousreply 17April 11, 2020 2:20 AM

Grant (and his pendulous dong), Beth Chamberlain, Michael O’Leary, Tina Sloan and Yvonne Kopacz Wright will be on with Alan on the 15th at 3 pm.

by Anonymousreply 18April 11, 2020 3:46 AM

I'd love to see Michael O'Leary's feet

by Anonymousreply 19April 11, 2020 3:52 AM

R17 did you see John Bolger's bulger?

by Anonymousreply 20April 11, 2020 6:04 AM

R18

I just love that they are doing these reunions.

by Anonymousreply 21April 11, 2020 10:36 AM

It's all about convenience. If they can sit in their homes, shoot the shit with some old colleagues, and not get asked for hugs by people they don't know, why not? I just wish the moderator would do a better job of making it all about GL and not ask questions like 'so, what's everyone watching on tv right now?'

by Anonymousreply 22April 11, 2020 5:34 PM

The GL group chat was great with Garrett, Zimmer, Newman, Verdorn and Keifer.

The most recent ATWT was not. Who knew Colleen Zenk was so aloof?

by Anonymousreply 23April 11, 2020 5:38 PM

I really don’t need to know what props, furniture and wardobe they ended up getting from the set.

by Anonymousreply 24April 11, 2020 6:06 PM

Suck it R24 Rosebud!

Emma’s China is mine!

by Anonymousreply 25April 11, 2020 6:15 PM

Colleen has been through hell in the last 5 years. I doubt she's "aloof" - more wounded.

She and Ellen have definitely aged, though!

by Anonymousreply 26April 11, 2020 6:23 PM

r25 = Post of the Month

by Anonymousreply 27April 11, 2020 9:25 PM

Thanks, R25

this has been one shitty month so, I'll take your compliment!

by Anonymousreply 28April 11, 2020 10:19 PM

r28, "Who Took What?" has been my single favorite part of these broadcasts, and knowing that that slut Carly Tenney ended up with Emma's china is just the pinnacle of Oakdale perfection. I'm SO glad to know someone else liked it as much as I did.

Eat shit, r24. Off a paper plate.

by Anonymousreply 29April 11, 2020 10:24 PM

Bext week's GL reunion will be Laura Wright, Cynthis Watros, Emme Rylan, Daniel Cosgrove and Laura's Wright's boy toy.

by Anonymousreply 30April 11, 2020 10:31 PM

R30 If they hadn't thrown Cosgrove in there, it would be all current GH people.

by Anonymousreply 31April 11, 2020 10:36 PM

The host asking what they were watching allowed them to mention that Tom Pelphrey is on the third season of Ozark and is getting great reviews.

Kim says he was playing Jonathan the first couple of episodes before transitioning to something else.

by Anonymousreply 32April 11, 2020 11:34 PM

I think Pelphrey's talented, but he's kinda ALWAYS playing the same character.

by Anonymousreply 33April 12, 2020 2:53 AM

R33

Did you see him in Banshee? That was a departure. Really good series if you haven't seen it. I think he was on the last 2 years.

He bulked up so much for that role it was startling. His arms & torso were huge & ripped. Great ass too.

by Anonymousreply 34April 12, 2020 2:59 AM

ooh, will have to check him out.

Which GL character would:

Love the quarantine?

Break the quarantine first?

Get pregnant during the quarantine?

Murder someone during the quarantine?

Die from COVID-19?

Most likely to be presumed dead from COVID-19 only to return later leading to at least one person fainting?

by Anonymousreply 38April 12, 2020 8:15 PM

If CBS and P&G had their way, a Bauer would certainly be the one to die.

by Anonymousreply 39April 12, 2020 8:16 PM

Love the quarantine? Buzz

Break the quarantine first? Alan

Get pregnant during the quarantine? Lizzie

Murder someone during the quarantine? Jonathan

Die from COVID-19? Reva (she gets around). 7th Emmy!

Most likely to be presumed dead from COVID-19 only to return later leading to at least one person fainting? Beth. She's the Queen of being presumed dead and coming back. Who would faint? Viewers. She'd come back played by Judi Evans.

by Anonymousreply 40April 12, 2020 8:25 PM

I'll do the ATWT version:

Love the quarantine? Seth Snyder, happily typing away on Emma's old Smith CORONA.

Break the quarantine first? Andrew Dixon, desperately searching for booze.

Get pregnant during the quarantine? Margo Hughes, but not by her husband.

Murder someone during the quarantine? Emily Stewart, while wearing a long fur coat.

Die from COVID-19? Nancy Hughes, with stoic acceptance.

Most likely to be presumed dead from COVID-19 only to return later leading to at least one person fainting? Well, we all know who that would be! "Hello, Barbara..."

by Anonymousreply 41April 12, 2020 8:54 PM

[quote]Break the quarantine first? Andrew Dixon, desperately searching for booze.

Andy is who I first thought of, too, LMS, for that exact same reason. I hope he isn't paying for it with his 20-year AA chip.

by Anonymousreply 42April 12, 2020 8:59 PM

R38 Honestly, Reva could be the answer to all those questions.

by Anonymousreply 43April 12, 2020 11:24 PM

Love the quarantine? Reva, if she is with Josh. Phillip/Beth if they are with each other.

Break the quarantine first? Lizzie. She can't sit still.

Get pregnant during the quarantine? Lizzie. See above.

Murder someone during the quarantine? Anybody quarantined with Alan.

Die from COVID-19? Nurse Lillian,sadly.

Most likely to be presumed dead from COVID-19 only to return later leading to at least one person fainting? Lillian. Time to pay back Beth for all those presumed dead times.

by Anonymousreply 44April 12, 2020 11:32 PM

Tina Sloan has been added to this week's reunion.

by Anonymousreply 45April 13, 2020 6:25 PM

Looking forward to where she will be linked from because she’s married to a millionaire.

by Anonymousreply 46April 13, 2020 6:31 PM

R46

She has an apartment overlooking Central Park but a lot of the wealthy de-camped to their Hamptons' homes.

by Anonymousreply 47April 13, 2020 8:17 PM

I follow her on Facebook and she keeps posting these videos that are basically zoomed into her eyeballs. If she does that same shtick on Wednesday there won't be any background visible.

by Anonymousreply 48April 14, 2020 12:53 AM

Tina! has a new book, Chasing Cleopatra.

by Anonymousreply 49April 14, 2020 1:26 AM

Hoe nice she’s got a hobby.

by Anonymousreply 50April 14, 2020 4:27 AM

ATWT will have another reunion this Friday with the younger set.

Luke, Jake, Maddie, Aaron, Allison

by Anonymousreply 51April 14, 2020 3:25 PM

Maddie I don't remember. You mean Jake Silberschlong, right, r51? Weren't there five Allisons?

by Anonymousreply 52April 14, 2020 3:26 PM

I forget sometimes the talent GL had in its younger cast on the show all at one time in the early 00's- Brittany Snow, Jesse Lee Soffer, Tammy Blanchard, Hayden Panettiere, Paul Wesley , Laura Bell Bundy to name a few. That is quite an impressive bunch.

by Anonymousreply 53April 14, 2020 4:39 PM

Tammy Blanchard should have a bigger career. I think at some point she will have a role where she will win another Emmy or Oscar. She already has a Primetime Emmy and two Tony nominations for lead actress. She was great on GL. Her first appearance on the show was with Taye Diggs.

by Anonymousreply 54April 14, 2020 4:52 PM

R52

Yes. I should've typed Noah instead of Jake

How can you not remember Maddie? She was Henry's sister. The actress' name is Alexandra Chando.

by Anonymousreply 55April 14, 2020 5:12 PM

The show was so bad, r55, I gave up on it in 1995. I only watched the gay scenes after that.

by Anonymousreply 56April 14, 2020 5:13 PM

Isn't Tina Sloan a Trumpster?

by Anonymousreply 57April 14, 2020 5:34 PM

R57 No way.

by Anonymousreply 58April 14, 2020 5:36 PM

Soffer was on ATWT, not GL.

by Anonymousreply 59April 14, 2020 6:06 PM

R59 Soffer was first on GL as Max Nickerson. GL was his TV debut.

by Anonymousreply 60April 14, 2020 6:41 PM

Soffer was paired with Brittany Snow on GL. Then Nickerson left ( I think to finish school) and Paul Wesley was cast as Max.

by Anonymousreply 61April 14, 2020 6:43 PM

I stand corrected.

by Anonymousreply 62April 14, 2020 9:44 PM

I'll drink to that!

(belch)

by Anonymousreply 63April 14, 2020 10:32 PM

I was a teenage gayling when Jesse Soffer and Paul Wesley were on GL. Both were crushes. I was so mad when Jesse left GL to finish his school work but when Paul was cast as a replacement, I didn't mind. Jesse grew into one of the finest men.

by Anonymousreply 64April 15, 2020 2:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 68April 15, 2020 8:54 PM

R58, going by the reunion I think you’re wrong. I definitely think Tina is a Trumpster. And also probably one of those 1 per center Floridians who helped get that disgusting governor into office.

by Anonymousreply 69April 15, 2020 9:20 PM

R69 She said nothing in the reunion to suggest that. Nothing.

by Anonymousreply 70April 15, 2020 10:19 PM

Tina is not a Trumpster.

She is very pro-military b/c her son was in it for years and she's a fiscal conservative, but she's very liberal in other ways. She is NOT a fan of Trump at ALL.

by Anonymousreply 71April 15, 2020 10:23 PM

Mikey looks like he has lost a little weight. Good for him.

by Anonymousreply 72April 15, 2020 10:43 PM

Beth Chamberlain looks great. Wow. Ageless.

I had no idea she played a Beth look alike in 1986 when Beth went missing. Tina reminded her that was her first day. It was filmed on location at a lake. I wonder if it is on youtube.

by Anonymousreply 73April 15, 2020 10:54 PM

I take it the guy who's throwing these zooms together worked for CBS, not P&G.

by Anonymousreply 74April 15, 2020 10:55 PM

R74 Alan worked for P&G.

But he came on after AW ended so it was only for the two CBS shows I think.

by Anonymousreply 75April 15, 2020 11:00 PM

You know Grant wanted to spill some major tea. Beth, too. Yvonna did say the GL cast was the absolute best and definitely alluded to Days being not so. She tried not to say it but then just blurted it out. Grant likewise said the cast had no ego.

by Anonymousreply 76April 15, 2020 11:52 PM

R67

I had no idea Grillo was going to be on Billions. I love that show.

by Anonymousreply 77April 15, 2020 11:54 PM

Isn't Mikey a deplorable?

by Anonymousreply 78April 16, 2020 2:37 PM

R78 I don't see that but I could be wrong. Grant sure isn't.

by Anonymousreply 79April 16, 2020 2:39 PM

The GL reunions continue. Next Friday the guests will be:

Olivia, Natalia, Rafe, Franck, Ava

by Anonymousreply 80April 16, 2020 6:01 PM

I am looking forward to the one (tomorrow) including Cynthia Watros but I do NOT want to hear anything about GH.

by Anonymousreply 81April 16, 2020 6:33 PM

R81 Considering four out of the five people on tomorrow are currently on GH, I'm afraid you will hear some.

by Anonymousreply 82April 16, 2020 8:20 PM

I so shipped Dan and Jessie back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 83April 16, 2020 9:28 PM

R82 Yes, I understand but they are on a GL chat. I'm sure they have to promote their show but I hope it is minimal. I've never watched GH and never will.

by Anonymousreply 84April 16, 2020 9:38 PM

Grant was so fucking modest about the whole Speedo thing. he tried to deflect and said all the guys had their share of speedo time and O'Leary's like not this fate whale.

Grant seems really polite and restrained while still sharing some great stories.

He and Scott Bryce (Craig, ATWT) were the two best actors on soaps, IMHO.

by Anonymousreply 85April 16, 2020 9:53 PM

[quote] Grant was so fucking modest about the whole Speedo thing

Oh....I guess I have to watch this whole thing now!

by Anonymousreply 86April 16, 2020 10:00 PM

Did Grant ever lose his gorgeous body even a little over 25 years on GL?

by Anonymousreply 87April 16, 2020 10:01 PM

there's this huge portrait of Grant in his background and it looks like something from the show; but he says it's actually a real life wedding gift not related to GL.

when it starts he's got horrible lighting and it looks like something out of Dark Shadows, I was thinking and then Beth says 'Grant looks like Dark Shadows'

He'd be great as Roger in a revival.

by Anonymousreply 88April 16, 2020 10:28 PM

A reset could work- they could have all the characters revert back to being younger. They could cast a Bert. Have an alternate universe GL. The previous actors could play different character like Grant playing Roger- great idea!

by Anonymousreply 89April 16, 2020 10:52 PM

I wanted them to create a show where most of the same people are in it, but playing similar characters/roles.

So no one has to fuck with P&G for rights, etc.

by Anonymousreply 90April 16, 2020 10:58 PM

I wish they would have Shipp on one of these reunion shows.

by Anonymousreply 91April 16, 2020 11:01 PM

One thing I learned from the GL reunions is that Charita Bauer’s first name was pronounced “Sharita.”

Grant seems like such a nice guy. I was tempted to ask on the screen chat about his walking into the studio, stopped by Bernau and my ex and said “I’ll be catching some shut eye in my dressing room for a bit. Last night at The Anvil really did me in.”

I loved it that his dressing room had a sign above it which read Chez Philippe.

by Anonymousreply 92April 16, 2020 11:05 PM

I would love them to have some of the old actors on like Judi Evans, Sherry Stringfield (she'd do it I think), Michelle Forbes (I can dream), JW Shipp......The possibilities are endless and with this shutdown, are more likely.

by Anonymousreply 93April 16, 2020 11:07 PM

[quote] O'Leary's like not this fate whale.

Oh, dear

by Anonymousreply 94April 16, 2020 11:30 PM

That was a very sweet exchange between Grant and Michael, though. I want to know more what they got up to on that all expenses paid trip to Italy in 1988.

by Anonymousreply 95April 17, 2020 12:06 AM

[quote]stopped by Bernau and my ex and said “I’ll be catching some shut eye in my dressing room for a bit. Last night at The Anvil really did me in.”

Who was your ex, r92?

by Anonymousreply 96April 17, 2020 12:07 AM

Brian Murray, R96. He played some antiquities guy in Tanquir (which everyone pronounced as Tan-queer).He died in 2018.

by Anonymousreply 97April 17, 2020 12:09 AM

People go on and on about the Phillip / Rick relationship.

I liked the Phillip / Alan Michael dynamic; especially when Carl T. Evans played the part.

It evolved from AM feeling he was in competition with Phillip for ALan's love and then one day AM said to Phillip, I never realized what it must be like to be someone's sick obsession.

by Anonymousreply 98April 17, 2020 12:10 AM

If I can be an unappreciative asshole I would like to thank this guy ALan Locher for doing these but I wish he did a better job. His questions are pretty lame. At least he lets people speak, though.

by Anonymousreply 99April 17, 2020 3:06 PM

Yes, he could be a better moderator. I do appreciate he is doing this. Thank you, Alan!

Why not go for broke and try for Kevin Bacon? He just may do it. He is not shy speaking about his GL past. Frances Fisher?

by Anonymousreply 100April 17, 2020 3:45 PM

I think Julianne Moore would do it, too. She’s always been appreciative of her days on ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 101April 17, 2020 4:36 PM

If you have some time to kill, here's GL from April 17, 1992 (also a Friday).

Lots of fun characters/actors: Harley and Mallet, Nadine and Billy, Alexandra with A-M and Eleni, Vanessa and Fletcher (I think this was during that weird moment they were paired up, I'm probably one of the few people that didn't hate it). Sherry Stringfield is still around at Blake.

It's weird to me that this is now 28 years ago. Even after all this time, I still miss this era of the show. (Yes, Mary!)

James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Billy Dee Williams

Melina Kanakaredes

Michelle Forbes

Nia Long

Sherry Stringfield

Tammy Blanchard/ Jesse Lee Sofer/ Paul Wesley/Patty D'Arbanville/Brittany Snow/Hayden Panettiere (I think she would do it)

That is just with some of the famous people.

by Anonymousreply 105April 17, 2020 7:45 PM

I'd love a reunion with the kids who were on the show - Rachel Miner, Bryan Buffington, the kid who played Ben with them, Kimberly Brown, Ashley Peldon. It would be fun to hear their views on the older actors.

by Anonymousreply 106April 17, 2020 7:51 PM

I'd love to see a few of the early 80s folks like Lisa Brown, Michael Tylo, etc.

As far as I know, Alan is doing this out of the kindness of his heart and to reach out to the people he worked with. And he was there in the last 10 years of both shows, so it's gonna mostly be those people who he knows.

by Anonymousreply 107April 17, 2020 7:54 PM

Don Hastings, who looks terrific, was trying to think of Steve Basset's name when he talked about Kim, Bob, Frannie, and SETH going to Italy to find Sabrina.

Nobody else there could think of his name. They weren't there.

I go back to the Dobson era as a kid -- I just remember Jacquie Shultz (sp?) being on A LOT and Ellen's wrap around hair do to make her look older; I recall Kim's eyes always being half closed and Johnny Dixon looking confused -- I heard Larry did that when he was in a scene with someone he didn't want to work with; he'd just look confused.

For me, the best era of the show was late 1985 when Doug came on and up until 1990 when Bob and Susan's fling came to light.

by Anonymousreply 108April 17, 2020 8:08 PM

r108

really? I owuld love to see scenes with Kim's eyes always being half closed and Johnny Dixon looking confused with someone he didn't want to work with;

by Anonymousreply 109April 17, 2020 8:14 PM

R109, go to 13:36; eyes are closed.

I just remember her doing it a lot.

don't get me wrong, I really like Kathy Hays; Kim was one of the last characters created by Irna Phillips and Kathy Hays was robbed of Emmy noms for her work in 1985, 1986, and 1990.

Frankly, with all due respect to Zimmer, I'd have made it a tie between Hubbard and Hayes in 1987 for their work in 1986.

Vanessa and Fletcher were paired? This must have been right after her attempted rape trial or something like that. Then she got back together with Billy, which was short-lived since Jordan Clarke got fired and they hired that other guy who didn't work out, so they had Billy shoot Roger and go to prison.

Then came Matt. My favorite.

by Anonymousreply 126April 18, 2020 3:12 AM

I just learned Maeve Kinkead is doing one of these reunions and I am in tears.

by Anonymousreply 127April 18, 2020 5:57 AM

Tuesday April 21 at 3 EST

The entire "family"

Maeve, Jordan Clarke, Kurt McKinney, Gina Tognoni and Bryan Buffington ("Little" Billy when he was little!)

by Anonymousreply 128April 18, 2020 5:59 AM

what about me?

by Anonymousreply 129April 18, 2020 7:01 AM

Wendy Moniz will never be on one of these. Too disliked by colleagues and fans. And I'll bet she doesn't give a shit either, so it works out.

by Anonymousreply 130April 18, 2020 7:08 AM

Ask Maeve and Gina about my piss regimen and my post-lunch liquor shits.

by Anonymousreply 131April 18, 2020 7:18 AM

They should do a writer/producer episode - I want to see Allan bring Ellen Wheeler to tears and ask Megan McTavish why she's such a freak.

by Anonymousreply 132April 18, 2020 4:21 PM

Too bad Paul Rauch is dead. He'd be great in this upcoming reunion with Maeve.

by Anonymousreply 133April 18, 2020 5:54 PM

R126, yes, Vanessa and Fletcher were briefly paired. I think you are right that it was after that sexual harassment trial she won. Vanessa was also on the rebound after Billy married Nadine while Fletcher was hurting after Alex rejected him for the millionth time. It didn’t last very long, they both realized they were still pining for Billy and Alex.

I do still weirdly remember their breakup scene: they were sitting on a stoop (indoor 5th St set, I think) talking about who they wanted to see come around the corner for them. Of course the answers were Billy and Alex.

Thinking about it now, Vanessa and Fletch each got what they wished for when the show ended.

by Anonymousreply 134April 18, 2020 7:26 PM

r131 Enough! That never happened and I'm sick of you constantly posting the same thing. You'll be blocked next.

by Anonymousreply 135April 18, 2020 9:05 PM

Ignore her, R135.

It's the same person who used to go on and on about Eileen Fulton clogging the toilets at ATWT, and the same person who keeps posting weird, fucked up shit about Y&R recasting Mrs. Chancellor.

I've been busy lately. Eavesdropping never stops, even in a lockdown!

But I do have some free time now to watch these video chats with GL and ATWT cast members. Can someone please post the links to them.

Many thanks. Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! That includes you, Donna. And Cecile too!

by Anonymousreply 146April 18, 2020 10:42 PM

Hello, Liz!

I'm staying healthy. Also need to catch up on those reunion chats!

A small trivia: Cecile (and Nancy Frangione) is the answer to a Digest mailbag letter this week.

by Anonymousreply 147April 18, 2020 11:22 PM

R147, how does anyone get out to buy that magazine now?

by Anonymousreply 148April 18, 2020 11:24 PM

R148 I actually haven't purchased it for eons upon eons but I discovered my library has a number of digital magazines available and Digest turned out to be one of them!

by Anonymousreply 149April 18, 2020 11:25 PM

I’d like an AMC reunion with Kim Delaney, Larry Lau, Darnell Williams, Marcy Walker and Amanda Bearse.

by Anonymousreply 152April 19, 2020 3:26 AM

I subscribed to Soap Digest for decades. Loved it back in the 1980s when I first started reading. Kept every issue. As a matter of fact, someday I'll give all those back issues to a university library. Or possibly sell them on eBay.

Anyway, back in 2016 or 2017, delivery of Soap Digest was spotty. Post office would deliver 2 issues in a week, then go month before delivering another issue. At one point, they failed to deliver 6-7 weeks in a row. When I called Soap Digest subscription fulfillment center to complain, they assured me they'd rush out the missing issues. Of course, they never came. I called again, they again promised to send the missing issues but they still never came.

In the meantime, more issues failed to be delivered. I complained about those too. Soap Digest finally said the problem was on my end and I should call the post office about the missing issues, not them. That caviler attitude to a longtime subscriber incensed me.

While all this was happening, I realized I was getting all my soap news online anyway, so why should I invest money in a magazine they could only get to my mail box 2 out of every 4 issues. A few months later when it came time to renew the subscription, I let it lapse. And I never really missed it. Nowadays, I'll occasionally glance through Digest while in line at the grocery store, but otherwise, I don't really think about Soap Digest. That's how irrelevant it has become.

Interestingly enough, Soap Digest never once called or wrote to ask why a 30+ year subscriber suddenly wasn't renewing his subscription. Shows how much they really care about the people who'd been keeping them in business for decades.

by Anonymousreply 153April 19, 2020 3:33 AM

R153 - same deal here. Deliver is TERRIBLE.

by Anonymousreply 154April 19, 2020 4:12 AM

Liz, wasn't that around the time SOD switched from who used to own them to their new publisher (which if I'm not mistaken is in some way related to the Nat'l Enquirer)?

I envy those saved copies. Several times I wanted to either research something, prove a point or yes, correct a Wikipedia article. But libraries almost never have those magazines in their archives to cite.

by Anonymousreply 155April 19, 2020 4:20 AM

ORD dear, I understand your frustration.

A public library is unlikely to keep back issues to a specialty magazine like Soap Digest. Only a research library like one connected to a university would have such specialty magazines. For example, here in Los Angeles, the UCLA library has a small collection of SOD from the mid 80s to the mid 90s, but the USC library has nothing.

Frankly, I suspect the same attitude which allows the networks to break into soaps for "news" interruptions, but never break into a sports program for "news interruptions" is at play with various research libraries as well That attitude is one that soaps are silly, mindless entertainment which only women watch so it's not worthy of any serious consideration.

by Anonymousreply 156April 19, 2020 4:44 AM

R156 And, I partly blame feminists for that. They seem embarrassed by soap operas, even though it was one of the few areas of entertainment where women could not only create but flourish. Every Women's Studies, and broadcasting department, should be celebrating Irna Phillps, Agnes Nixon, Gloria Monty, etc...

by Anonymousreply 157April 19, 2020 4:50 AM

The soap opera medium is continually ridiculed, and yet the people working in it have to memorize pages of dialogue daily and nail it in one take to keep on time and budget. As Grant Aleksander put it this past week, you have to be fast and good.

Compare this with weekly dramas and comedies and movies where you shoot scenes over the course of several hours, days, or weeks. I've been to Will and Grace tapings and that show takes HOURS to film the 20 minutes that ultimately air as one episode, and the cast is goofing off more than they're playing their parts.

And yet soaps are the ones that suck.

by Anonymousreply 158April 19, 2020 4:59 AM

American Media, Inc. is the current owner of Soap Digest. I believe they purchased Soap Digest about 2013 or 2014 from Source Interlink, which had purchased the magazine from Primedia in 2007.

American Media also owns Us Weekly, the Star, OK!, Men Journal, etc.

American Media owned the National Enquirer until April 18, 2019 (one year ago today) when it was sold to the Hudson Group following the scandal where the Enquirer tried to blackmail Jeff Bezos.

by Anonymousreply 159April 19, 2020 5:00 AM

R158 Exactly. In terms of difficulty for the actors, I'd rank it like this 1) soaps, 2) stage, 3) Primetime Television, 4) Movies. Remember, when Joan Collins did her short stint as Alexandra on GL, one reason it was short was because she said she just couldn't handle the pace, compared to primetime or the movies. And, she wasn't some novice. At that time she'd been in the business for around fifty years.

by Anonymousreply 160April 19, 2020 5:09 AM

I was sad Collins left GL so early.

She said it was b/c of her book tour and Rauch had left and he was her champion.

Collins told Soap Opera Weekly, I believe, that Alexandra was based on Alexis...ironically, I believe Alexis was based on Iris Carrington, played by McKinsey, who created Alexandra.

by Anonymousreply 161April 19, 2020 9:47 AM

ORD/R155 - Try classicsodamc.tumblr.com (insert "amc" for any other soap acronym - aw, atwt, gh, etc). They have summaries going from the first issue to the early 90s on each site. The sites are updated pretty regularly. It's amazing! They have all the cancelled soaps prior to 1991/1992 (where they are up to) - Ryan's Hope, Search for Tomorrow, Love of Life, Loving, etc

by Anonymousreply 162April 19, 2020 4:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 170April 20, 2020 7:18 PM

No, R169, it wasn’t that. They didn’t fight. Darnell is a total sweetheart. He just tolerated her. It wasn’t in his nature to get noticeably irritated by her. And he loved his AMC job and would never jeapardize it just because she was a snotty little cunt.

by Anonymousreply 171April 20, 2020 7:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 175April 20, 2020 9:31 PM

Can someone list all the gay people that appeared on the P&G soaps, including people rumored to have had same sex affairs?

Here's what I know:

GL: Matt Bomer (Ben), Chris Bernau (Alan), Maureen Garrett (Holly)

ATWT: Van Hansis (Luke)

AW: Constance Ford (Ada)

by Anonymousreply 176April 20, 2020 9:48 PM

AW: Richard Bekins, Warren Burton, Kevin Conroy GL: Erik Howell, Joseph Breen ATWT: John Colenback, Dennis Cooney

by Anonymousreply 177April 20, 2020 9:57 PM

R176

Too many to mention.

by Anonymousreply 178April 20, 2020 10:07 PM

EON: Joel Crothers, Dennis Parker, and many, many more guys. Also: Holland Taylor.

by Anonymousreply 179April 20, 2020 10:08 PM

There was an actor named Richard Clarke, I think he was on GL and ATWT, who did a hilarious interview with Daytime TV. "I'm in love with a beautiful girl!' - it was the Statue of Liberty and he was a British guy as gay as a three dollar bill. You didn't have to read between the lines.

by Anonymousreply 186April 21, 2020 1:37 AM

R176, isn't his name Ham Hansis?

by Anonymousreply 187April 21, 2020 1:48 AM

R169, she actually took a beat and then smiled. Most times when you ask someone if they've called the police, it throws them off.

It was an industry night and the interaction was brief so, Debbi was nice enough. I fully believe your story though.

The number of ingrates in soaps and in show biz boggles my mind.

If I landed a job acting on a soap or a sitcom, I'd be kissing the ground 24/7. I've seen many nice folks in the soap biz. But you'd think everyone would be.

I saw PAS in person when I was in NYC to see my long distance BF in 2004. I also saw him, Father Ray, Marj, Richard. I walked into the lobby of their studios near the UN and PAS got off the elevator. My BF was like, "that's Danny" and if I knew he was gay, I would have invited him for a threesome.

by Anonymousreply 201April 21, 2020 3:35 PM

[quote] I don’t think Joseph Breen is gay, his HIV status was from drug usage.

This thread made me look him up, and I surprisingly discovered that in 2006, well after being diagnosed with HIV, he married Country singer Carlene Carter. Carlene is Country royalty, as she is June Carter's daughter with fellow Country singer Carl Smith.

by Anonymousreply 202April 21, 2020 3:39 PM

Thank you so much, r200.

Gina was fabulous as Dinah. She deserved both of those Emmy wins.

by Anonymousreply 208April 21, 2020 9:36 PM

R208 I can happily skip that.

by Anonymousreply 209April 21, 2020 9:46 PM

Yup, just announced today. Ugh. No thanks.

Surprised Nancy St Alban is not invited but Joie was......

by Anonymousreply 210April 21, 2020 9:56 PM

Speaking of Nancy St Alban, back when she was on the show we went on a charity tour of 10 homes in the Homeland section of Baltimore and one of them happened to be her parents' house, and it was kind of tacky that they had a spread of magazines with her on the cover on the kitchen table!

by Anonymousreply 211April 21, 2020 11:39 PM

Uggh, Nancy St. Alban was like a Pampers commercial actress who wandered on a soap set. She was way too bland as Michelle.

by Anonymousreply 212April 21, 2020 11:53 PM

Yeah the Santos family and that whole royalty riff in San Cristobel was truly the end. I stopped watching in the late 90's but remember I was home and tuned in for a rando episode and there was some Buckingham Palace-type shit with people in uniforms with swords, etc. This would cut to scenes with this woman as the head of the mob family. It was horrendous.

by Anonymousreply 213April 22, 2020 12:04 AM

by Anonymousreply 215April 22, 2020 1:22 AM

The Matt and Vanessa hookup was my favorite GL couple/story, so to see Kurt and Maeve today was fabulous. What a wonderful way to do these reunions. Everyone just gives up an hour in their own houses and there's no awkwardness with weird fans who want hugs and pictures. When else would you ever just get to see the cast like this talking about behind the scenes stuff to this extent? It's better than the in-person stuff where there's not nearly the same amount of detail or access.

by Anonymousreply 216April 22, 2020 1:34 AM

I loved hearing that Maeve Kincead is going to be a grandmother for the first time, albeit under difficult circumstances. Her daughter Maude looks more like her aunt Meryl than her mother Maeve. I met Maude on the set of Doubt where she was a production assistant. She was very sweet.

by Anonymousreply 217April 22, 2020 1:55 AM

Does anyone know what happened to the video from today's live stream of the GL reunion? I was working all day and was looking forward to watching, especially seeing Maeve.

by Anonymousreply 218April 22, 2020 1:59 AM

R217 How cool and yes I agree Maud definitely resembles her aunt! Really nice of Maeve to devote time to this now knowing the personal craziness in her own life, on top of the general pandemic situation.

She is still looking so lovely. In particular I loved her look in the 90's with her hair shorter as she got older. Age really softened her and made her even prettier. If you go back to the older tapes from the 80's with the big hair, super thick brows, and strong bone structure she had a much harsher look about her.

by Anonymousreply 219April 22, 2020 2:11 AM

Honestly, I never knew she is married to Meryl Streep's brother.

by Anonymousreply 220April 22, 2020 2:13 AM

Maeve talked about her makeup the night she won the Emmy and not liking it. I actually liked the makeup, but it was the hair that didn't look great. It looked like they'd taken the rollers out but not combed the hair through.

I never found Vanessa an interesting character.

by Anonymousreply 229April 22, 2020 4:36 PM

R229, how far back do you go. Doug Marland created the character and she was brilliant when she first came on to Springfield.

She was toned down when Reva came on but later had a comeback.

by Anonymousreply 230April 22, 2020 5:04 PM

I started watching when I was home sick from 3rd grade in 1991. I've caught up on everything from 1983 to 1990 on youtube. Well what is on youtube.

by Anonymousreply 231April 22, 2020 5:06 PM

I thought it was very sweet when Bryan Buffington talked about the late Vince Williams, who played Hampton Speakes.

by Anonymousreply 232April 22, 2020 5:07 PM

R232 Yes what a blast from the past! Loved him. I'll never forget when they would play the GL theme from his saxophone music, especially during montages.

by Anonymousreply 233April 22, 2020 5:12 PM

Christopher Schemering who wrote the Soap Encyclopedia about GL: 'all of Doug Marland's characters had been written out or diffused" (what a great word)

That certainly applied to Vanessa. She was cutthroat when she first came to town. Pushing Eve ('little Evie') around and showing up at Ross Marler's house in nothing but a fur coat. Calculating, devoted to her daddy (the great Bill Roerick), Vanessa dated Ed and bedded Tony Reardon.

I grew to appreciate Vanessa and Billy, but there were times I never understood what she saw in not so much him, but the whole Lewis lifestyle.

In 1987, Pam Long was back; had a different take on Vanessa. Engaged to Alan, Vanessa left town to be with Billy who had fallen off the wagon in Venezuela.

Never quite the same as when Doug wrote her, Vanessa was a big favorite of mine. She could still play bitch. When Holly brought flowers from Roger for Maureen's funeral, Vanessa intercepted them, asked if Roger had included a card; Holly wasn't sure. Vanessa sees a note and without opening it, hides it in her purse and smirks at Holly (who should have known better) and says: "Maureen will know."

by Anonymousreply 234April 22, 2020 5:22 PM

I still never found Vanessa interesting. I wasn't born during the Marland years. She was very meh.

by Anonymousreply 235April 22, 2020 5:39 PM

Vanessa has long been a favorite of mine.

Maeve kept her alive, even during the Reva Show.

by Anonymousreply 236April 22, 2020 5:45 PM

You know, I was taking a lot of the GL gossip from the Grillo thread w/the usual grain of salt.

But interesting to me that Maeve's video conference, of all her costars, is with....Kurt. Hmmm.

Maeve Kinkead was unhappy when Pam Long was writing the show - she said that Pam turned Vanessa from a strong vibrant career woman to a pill-popping suburban housewife

Kinkead said Pam focused on two women only - Reva & Alex, to the detriment of Vanessa. She kept in perspective though being professional and showing up. It was only when Kinkead made noises about leaving, did TPTB take any action on changing the characterization of Vanessa - by that time Pam Long was gone

In her Emmy acceptance speech Maeve thanks 3 people in particular - Jill Farren Phelps, Douglas Marland and Betty Rea

Ellen Parker (ex-Maureen) is still close friends with Meryl Streep (having acted in theater productions together) and Maeve Kinkead.

by Anonymousreply 239April 22, 2020 5:52 PM

The only two actors who have worked with BOTH Meryl Streep and Maeve Kinkead are

Allison Janney and Kevin Bacon.

by Anonymousreply 240April 22, 2020 5:53 PM

R238- She also focused on Beth. At least in her initial run as HW. She was the only writer who got Beth, Reva and Alex. She wrote Beth's great return from the dead but didn't write as much for her after that.

I loved how they raved about how the acting quality on GL was so superior. GL had some major talent go through there. I know other soaps had acting talent as well but when I would casually view other shows, only ATWT came close to GL in acting talent.

by Anonymousreply 243April 22, 2020 6:02 PM

[quote] GL had some major talent go through there.

All thanks to Betty Rea, the casting director. (who for a few years did double duty casting both GL & ATWT)

Here Meryl Streep talks about Maeve Kinkead in a speech honoring Vanessa Redgrave!

Why didn't Maeve try to get Meryl on GL? Meryl would have totally done it.

They also reiterated the notion of how the set of GL was so chill, relaxed, full of no ego and people who were funny and pleasant. I assume they did not include Beth Ehlers in that since she was a miserable nasty bitch.

[quote] Why didn't Maeve try to get Meryl on GL? Meryl would have totally done it.

Probably not.

by Anonymousreply 247April 22, 2020 6:20 PM

I think she would have. Meryl is adventurous and fun. Meave would never have asked, though.

by Anonymousreply 248April 22, 2020 6:23 PM

I forgot that John J. York mispronounced Maeve's name.

by Anonymousreply 249April 22, 2020 6:25 PM

Crystal Chappell said Guiding Light set was far more relaxed and ego-free than Days of our Lives

by Anonymousreply 250April 22, 2020 6:30 PM

I also enjoyed Maeve saying that Elvera Roussel (Hope Bauer) said to her “You look terrified! You don’t need to be, this set is so much nicer than that other soap you were on.” Heh heh. I think Maeve didn’t have any problems with the AW cast but did have a big problem with executive producer Paul Rauch.

by Anonymousreply 251April 22, 2020 6:33 PM

Wasn't the GL set considered very wild in the 80s? Someone here said it was Coke Central. I find that hard to believe since it never seemed the performers were coked up. Maybe they meant Cock Central?

by Anonymousreply 252April 22, 2020 6:41 PM

All NYC soap sets were very coke fueled in the 80s. GL may not have been as bad as some of the others but it got messy for some of them, Kristi Ferrell (Roxie) in particular.

by Anonymousreply 253April 22, 2020 7:11 PM

R253 Ok dish. Anybody else from GL?

by Anonymousreply 254April 22, 2020 7:26 PM

I really only heard the overt stories about Kristi getting in trouble. I can't say for sure about anyone else though I would imagine the younger crowd at that time that were heavy in story may have used.

AMC apparently had the messiest set in NYC. Walt Willey has been pretty open about that.

by Anonymousreply 255April 22, 2020 7:30 PM

The younger set of Judi/Grant/Michael/Krista? Doesn't seem likely. Or the set from when Kevin Bacon was on?

by Anonymousreply 256April 22, 2020 7:41 PM

Or the Ian Zeiring/Paige Turco set?

by Anonymousreply 257April 22, 2020 7:45 PM

R256 Grant was known to be a partier on his first GL go-round, as was Vincent Irizarry. But like I said, I don't know if any of them ever did or ever got to the point there was an issue. I don't know if Kim ever did, either. But some of those shows were filming 18-20 hours a day for some storylines, so....coffee ain't gonna cut it for that, y'know?

I think GL and ATWT were quieter sets than the ABC soaps, but I think AW had issues, and AMC was a mess.

by Anonymousreply 258April 22, 2020 7:51 PM

R250

That's rich coming from CC considering she demanded to not work with Grant once he returned. CC was quite the bitch.

by Anonymousreply 259April 22, 2020 8:17 PM

R253

I think coke was pretty consistent on all soaps during the 80s. Kin Shriner said it was out in the open on the Craft Services table.

by Anonymousreply 260April 22, 2020 8:19 PM

CC is widely believed to be someone who complained about Grant - her support/comment in the magazines was noticeably absent when Grant was fired in 2004.

Wheeler probably believed GA would come back with a smaller salary in a few months once things cooled down, but it ended up being way longer. And CC and GA shared maybe 2 scenes in the last 6 months of GL when he was back.

by Anonymousreply 261April 22, 2020 8:20 PM

Lee Godart (Kent) was immediately fired when exec producer Jackie Babbin saw him doing coke as she passed by the hallway and his dressing room door was open.

by Anonymousreply 262April 23, 2020 6:44 PM

I watched the reunion with Maeve Kinkead, Kurt Mc et al

I got about a third of the way in and Maeve said, "We were all so lucky, weren't we?"

And I just LOST it. Ugly cry.

I miss that show.

by Anonymousreply 263April 23, 2020 10:14 PM

They all have mentioned what partiers GA and MOL were back in the day. Their dressing room was a destination spot for boozing it up.

MOL is sober now about 5 years.

I love Danny Cosgrove. He is so funny and what a hunk still.

So, lets move on and chat about Felicia on this new thread.
